Go To

Freelancers doesn't just love this trope. They're happily married with three kids: Bartholomew, Mattory, and Phil.

Season 1

"Video Production Company" (pilot)

  • Zona mentions that Micah hates pigeons. Cut to the gang sitting outside. Micah walks off-screen, then comes back holding a pigeon, which he proceeds to drop-kick.
  • Micah complains about how loud Ryan is at night. Cut to him eating loud snacks, folding and unfolding tissue paper, and looking for a hole in his "maraca blanket." And narrating it all.
  • Zona mentions that she and Devin donated plasma eight times each to raise money. When asked how they were allowed to do that, she says they were in disguise. Cut to security video footage of them entering the donation center repeatedly, in increasingly outlandish disguises.

"Cursed"

  • Ryan and Devin tell Micah that his fly is down, and he replies that it's "a very conscious style choice." Cut to him exiting the bathroom, and confidently unzipping his pants and smiling.

"Karate!"

  • When the gang discovers that Devin was the one that beat up Micah, Owen, and Ryan, we get a cut back to Devin curbstomping them. Moments later, when Devin says she thought she recognized Owen's crying, we cut back again to Owen being tased for a ridiculously long time.
  • When Owen mentions his "micro-stomach," we're treated to a diagnosis sheet by Owen's doctor:
Doctor: Patient complains that M&Ms are too big. Doctor explained that there are Mini M&Ms. Patient became embarrassed and belligerent.
  • Devin tells Zona that "sometimes you gotta just let go, and let life happen to you, like when I got stuck in that giant tumbleweed." Cut to a wide shot of a tumbleweed, with the sound of Devin screaming.

"Circus Berzerkus"

  • Zona says "Reading contracts is my favorite part of the job." We then seen Zona reclined in a softly candlelit room, with a contract in one hand and a glass of wine in the other, saying, "Ooh, a restrictive covenant!"
  • Devin tells Ryan about her traumatic past, when she had an act in the circus in which she ate raw meat while people tried to guess her credit score. Cue a shot of Devin in clown garb doing said act.

"Power Outage"

  • Owen can't communicate with his Tinder date due to the outage, and asks if anyone has a carrier pigeon, or knows of "an eagle that can smell hot blondes." Devin raises her hand and says, "I do." Cut to a brief shot of an eagle in the rain, followed by Owen closing the door on a sobbing blonde.
Owen: That was the wrong girl, Devin. Your eagle is bogus!

"CrossFit"

  • Ryan mentions helping his grandma changing a flat tire. In the cutaway, we see that the tire is on her mobility scooter.
  • When Zona says how excited they are to film a black tie gala, Ryan pipes up with "I shaved my legs for this!" We then get a close-up of Ryan's leg mid-shave, as he sings, "Fancy, prancy, dancy thighs!"
  • When Micah is having trouble speaking, Zona says that "his mouth's just screwed up from all those mouth curls he did!" Cut to Micah lifting weights with his mouth.

Season 2

"Student Body President"

  • Micah expresses his disbelief that Mr. Gandolfini moved in order to continue being their neighbor. We then see the moment when Mr. Gandolfini discovered that the VPC crew moved, immediately abandoning the task of watering his lawn in a panic.
  • Zona mentions she's been attending therapy, while Devin questions how she was able to afford it. Cue Zona sitting outside the door with a microphone listening in on another person's session.
Zona: (taking notes) Oh that's good, that's good advice. OH!... I was definitely not supposed to hear that!
  • When they're wondering how Vanderchild learned that Zona was running against him, we cut back to the scene where she files her application with the principal, this time panning to Vanderchild sitting in the corner, somehow completely unnoticed by Zona.

"Zona and Bike Boy"

  • When Ryan says that he finds the prospect of car thieves in their area frightening, and Micah says it's not that frightening, Ryan says they have different standards on it. We then flash back to Ryan and Micah at the breakfast table, where we see their reactions to the cartoon vampire on the box of "Feratu Bites" cereal. Ryan is mildly alarmed, but Micah is terrified.
  • Zona explains how Micah's vibes are never as accurate as he believes, as she recalls the time when Micah was picking up "vibes" between her and an older gentleman. Said gentleman was her father.
  • Later, Owen mentions how no one is allowed to dupe Zona but them. Cue Zona in the bathroom clipping her toe-nails when Micah pops out from behind the curtain playfully scaring her, then Ryan pops up and starts squirting her with a Water Gun, then Owen shoots off a confetti canon, and Devin dumps roaches over them all.
  • Devin asks Zona if there really was nothing that tipped her off that Bike Boy was the car thief. Zona then flashes back to her tandem bike ride with him, where he asks her "So, do you park your car in a garage?" and "Do you keep it locked?"

"Wheel of Challenges"

  • Micah, annoyed that his friends doesn't know how to abbreve, shows off his poster of abbreviations.
  • Then Devin mentions how bad the group is at taking turns, in which Zona and Owen argue with Micah and Devin about using the swings at the playground, while Ryan happily slides down the slide nearby.
  • Later Devin and Ryan remember a time they fought over a human tooth. After being told by Micah their story is taking too long, Ryan skips to the end, in which the two decided to use it in a wishing well and got to meet an Astronaut. He did not like them.

"Doodles Chips"

  • Micah mentions a past customer who attempted to pay them in dance. The cutaway shows the performance. Owen and Micah are not amused. Ryan is enthralled.
  • Owen's "micro-stomach" diagnosis sheet from "Karate!" makes a brief reappearance. This time, it turns out to be relevant to the plot!
  • Devin insists that everyone and everything is hiding something. Cut to her suspiciously asking a tree what it's hiding, then freaking out when she pulls a blade covered with blood out of a knot in the trunk. It then starts pelting her with pinecones.
Devin: Oh, my! MURDER! MURDER TREE!
  • Immediately after, Micah asks if that's why he caught her drowning pinecones. We then see her fighting to hold a pinecone down in a bucket of water and grunting, "Stop... struggling!" She's later seen "killing" a pinecone with a garrote in the credits.
