Jonathan Gran, better known by his alias '''Ukinojoe''', is a YouTuber who, along with his associate Danielle Kogan, makes short animated cartoons, which are often very strange and ridiculous. He worked on Great: The Show, a Sketch Comedy of sorts with his brand of usual humor, as well as Frumplequest (about an adventurer who is a Walking Disaster Area), and Audrey & Victor (about the titular siblings learning to get along while making their way through surreal adventures; the duo first appeared in "Naughty", but went unnamed until the Poorly Disguised Pilot "Literally Hitler").
Ukinojoe's videos provide examples of:
- Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: A lot of characters voiced by Joe tend to eeeeemphasize random words and/or syllables mid sentence in a certain waaaaay.
- Accidental Misnaming:
- I'M NOT SONIC! I'M MY ORIGINAL CHARACTER, BLONIC!
- Also, the titles of his videos Iron Bad and Indiada Jodes.
- Adaptational Villainy: Bart. He nukes his family and all of Springfield. Not to be confused with the eponymous Barm, who commits a crime far more egregious.
- Alternate Character Interpretation: In-universe. For example, Mabel, a sweet Genki Girl, is a Manipulative Bitch and a Karma Houdini.
- And Knowing Is Half the Battle:
- BLONIC SEZ, a parody of the Sonic Says segments from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
- The "And Now...A Word/Made Ya Think" sketches from Great: The Show, though they're more non sequiturs and Insane Troll Logic than anything.
- Apocalypse How: In "Frumplequest the Conquistador: EMBARRASSMENT" the entire ocean disappears. It is implied that the entire desert where Frumplequest was in is actually the dried up ocean.
- April Fools' Day: On April 1, 2023, Joe has released the sequel to the Dog of Wisdom.
- Art Evolution: '90s Nick took two appearances to learn how to move his mouth. His most recent appearances also gave him a nose.
- Art Shift: Great: The Show 6 has a sketch of Joe in live-action, talking about bran cereal.
- Ascended Extra: Audrey and Victor (the siblings from "Literally Hitler") went on star in their own eponymous, short-lived series.
- Audience Participation: The comments for his "Eddie Murphy" video, in which he dies after creating 1000 Norbit sequels, are nothing but people ranking which of them was the best or worst.
- Back from the Dead: Despite being killed off in "Frumple's Quest", Frumplequest returns in the fifth episode of "Great: the Show". He eventually gets a 3-part series called "Frumplequest the Conquistador: EMBARRASSMENT"
- Badass Israeli: Audrey and Victor are Jewish, and manage to outsmart Hitler.
- The Bad Guy Wins: In We Gotta Get SpongeBob Back, Plankton finally gets a Krabby Patty. Though he's not exactly happy about what he finds in it...
- Bait-and-Switch: "How about you come to my car so I can show you my car?"
- Basement-Dweller: The dude in Great The Show 4 lives in his girlfriend's basement but only calls her for help. He mainly plays shooting games and is very fat and lazy.
- Berserk Button: Don't suggest that Family Guy is the same show as The Simpsons. Pigda Grifm will go ballistic.
- Blatant Lies: 90s Nick's list of all of the wonderful things that only kids from the 90s could have experienced does not include a single thing that was exclusive to The '90s (no, not even Green Day).
- Bloody Hilarious: "PAAAPEEERCUUUT!!"
- Bookends: In Bella Caramella's first segment of Great: The Show season one, she teaches that brownies are one big brownie. In her last segment of the season, her sister GV repeats the observation.
- Break the Haughty: In Groose: Grooseward Gourd, Groose attempts to ask Zelda out on a date, who not only refuses, but hurls multiple insults at him. Cut to Groose crying in bed.Groose: Where did I go wrong?
- Buffy Speak: Idiada Jones refers to the Crystal Skull as, "a thing", and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull as, "the thing of the thing".
- The Bus Came Back: Naked Fat Guy who only appeared in the first Frumplequest video, reappears as the Big Bad for "Frumplequest the Conquistador: EMBARRASSMENT"
- Butt-Monkey: Many.
- Luigi in Bowja From His Castle''And then LUIGI was like "Yeah!" but no one cared.
- Bluckles in BLONIC SEZ.
- Dipper in Brevity Falls.
- Trilby in Work To Do Today.
- Luigi in Bowja From His Castle
- The Casanova: Peter Sexhaver in Great: The Show 3.
- Cassandra Truth: Initially, Victor thinks Audrey is crazy for thinking their new neighbor could be Hitler. She turns out to be right, and they're both horrified.
- Catchphrase:
- Blails' "How embarrassing!"
- 90's Nick: "It was a good show/game"!
- Copy Cat Sue: Parodied in BLONIC.
- Credits Gag: The credits to Frumple's Quest insist that there's nothing else after the credits and the video is over. Which isn't exactly true.
- Crossover:
- In PigaDgrifm, the titular character meets Zangief from Street Fighter. Then they fight and it's feeeeeeeeeeeneh. In addition, Apu is the store cashier.
- More traditionally (and featuring the same character), The Grifms Meet the Sweatsons.
- Delayed Reaction: In The Grifms Meet the Sweatsons, when Peter offers Homer a beer, he drinks it and says it's alright. Later, at the Simpsons' house, Peter suddenly snaps and yells "What do you mean 'it alright'?!"
- Disney Death: After the climax of Irod Bad, the narrator claims that Iron Man dies, but doesn't really die, and then says that Pepper dies (though he never mentioned her earlier), only to reveal that she didn't die, either.
- A Dog Named "Dog": In Dog of Wisdom, the dog flying the airplane introduces himself as, "The Dog".
- Double Entendre: "Three Little Dogs" has some. When the poem says, "One had ball/The others had none", the viewer probably assumes this refers to the tennis ball in the middle dog's mouth. However, after a scene of the dogs peeing on a tree, two of them exclaim, "We lost our balls/But he has three!"
- Early-Bird Cameo: Audrey and Victor first appeared in "Naughty", one of Joe's first videos made in 2009, as a pair of homeless kids warming themselves around a burning trashcan. This is referenced in the theme song for their show. Victor made a solo appearance in a very short video called "lost in the supermarket", released in 2017.
- Elmuh Fudd Syndwome: Giwaffe from Great: The Show 9 speaks like this. Even the name of his short, Giwaffe and Cwow, references this.
- The End... Or Is It?: Irod Bad ends with the words "The End?" appearing onscreen, with Iron Man's mask in place of the dot. Ukinojoe eventually did release Irod Bad 2, even though he never finished animating it.
- Eye Scream: In We Gotta Get SpongeBob Back, Plankton stabs himself in the eye after seeing Squidward's face imprinted on a Krabby Patty.
- Blonic sticks cigarettes into Bluckles' eyes in BLONIC SEZ
- Fanon Discontinuity: In-universe, Brian is apparently still dead.
- Fat Bastard: Naked Fat Guy.
- Fourth-Date Marriage: In The Grifms Meet the Sweatsons, Lisa compliments Chris on his shirt. The next time they're seen, they're engaged.
- Freudian Slip: In the Steven Universe parody from Great: The Show 9, Pearl worries that "Steven's penis" will "get in the way" of the Crystal Gems' missions. Consequently, she accidentally calls Steven, "Penis", while in the shower.note
- Friendless Background: Apparently 90's Nick had a very lonely childhood until he meet a group of kids who shared his common interest in Pokémon...then he lost them after the fad died down. Pretty much (unintentionally) providing a good Freudian Excuse for why he's such a bitter person wallowing in Nostalgia Filter
- Gamebooks: Frumple's Quest
- Genial Giraffe: "Giwaffe and Cwow" from Great: The Show 9 - Forgiveness stars a friendly giraffe with Elmuh Fudd Syndwome who talks to a crow, apologizes for eating the tree where the crow used to live, and befriends it.
- Go Mad from the Isolation: SpongeBob's absence drives Squidward mad, leading to him trying to rob a convenience store.Cashier: Don't do this, Squidward!Squidward: But I gotta get SPONGEBOB back!Cashier: You know this is wrong! This won't bring SpongeBob back!
- The Ground Is Lava: Parodied in a sketch where Joe attempts to beat Super Mario Bros., the "hardest game in the world", without touching the ground. Every time he does touch the ground he says it doesn't count, and eventually ends the video in tears after realizing it's impossible.
- Happily Adopted: While Victor and Audrey at first seemed to reuse the character designs of the children in "Naughty", "Audrey and Victor" includes a short clip of them from when they were homeless. in "Literally Hitler", they have a home and mother, and seem to be living really comfortably.
- Here We Go Again!: The Soy details an effort to make soy milk cheaper. This movement succeeds when President Barack Obama's daughter, Sasha, convinces him to legalize weed with an excise tax, and use the excess money to subsidize soy. Unfortunately, a cut to "One Year Later" reveals that the price of weed milk has escalated.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Victor decides to take one for the team and eat Hitler's most-likely poisoned food to expose him to his mother. And it does indeed end up being poisoned. Fortunately, Victor lives, and Audrey appeals to Hitler's artistic side.
- Hypocritical Humor:
- In Great: The Show 5, when coming across a giant squid hoarding bran cereal, Frumplequest remarks "Someone's never heard of sharing!" Later, when Dust saves Frumplequest from being eaten, the latter is upset (because the squid's belly was full of bran and he wanted to spend the rest of his life there) and refuses to share.
- In BLONIC SEZ, Blails knows that smoking is bad for him, yet can't resist.
- I Do Not Like Green Eggs and Ham: In Great the Show episode 10, Bella convinces GV to try biscotti dunked in coffee. Even though GV beforehand finds it gross that this leaves "nazz" in the coffee, she ends up thinking that biscotti tastes much better this way.
- I Lied / Yank the Dog's Chain: This exchange from Brevity Falls:Mabel: Look at the bright side. Wendy told me that she thinks you're REALLY COOL now!Dipper: Really?Mabel: NO!
- Imaginary Enemy: Both times Frumplequest encounters Naked Fat Guy, he's just imagining some inanimate object as him. In EMBARRASMENT part 2 it's implied he's just a random guy who chuckled at frumplequest once when the latter was having a panic attack.
- Inflating Body Gag: Blonic is shown to be prone to this at inexplicable times.Blails: How embarrassing!
- Inherently Funny Words: Wump
- Irony: Blonic is supposed to be an extremely uninspired original character. However, as many people have pointed out, he's actually the most original of them all.
- Karma Houdini: Mabel in Brevity Falls. Despite her being the one to convince Dipper to smoke weed, he gets sent to jail while she gets off scott-free.
- Kick the Dog: Not only does Mabel get Dipper arrested, but she clearly takes joy in telling him that Wendy thinks he's a loser, saying it multiple times while smiling.
- Killed Off for Real: At the end of "Frumple's Quest", Frumplequest is shot by Dust after getting the treasure. He gets better though.
- "Knock Knock" Joke:
- Breaking Bad spoof Fixing Good 2 has one, with Walter White naturally filling the role of "The one who knock-knocks." The punchline? "Walter you waiting for? Let me in!"
- The Dog of Wisdom also claims to know some good ones. The one he shares in the video changes into a parody of the theme song to The Greatest American Hero. "♫BallIEVE it or not, I'm walking on air! I never thought I could feel so free-hee-hee!♫"
- Large Ham: His characters aren't exactly subtle.
- Lawyer-Friendly Cameo: From The Grifms Meet the Sweatsons: Dis presents Tarz.
- Lazy Bum:
- Blails in BLONIC 2. When Blonic wants to go round up the troops to fight Eggman, Blails just sits. At the end of the video, he's still there.
- The guy in Great The Show who's to lazy to even get his controller and has to calls Jade for her to get it. When she arrives she pulls out the game console and leaves the room and takes it with him. The guy is devistated judging by his reaction.
- Lemony Narrator: The seemingly dim narrator of Star Wumpis McGumpis summarizes The Force as a religion about "mind control, kidnapping, and murdering people with swords", calls Darth Vader "not very important to the story", and admits that the Star Wars galaxy "...wasn't a very good galaxy to begin with" and that the Rebel Alliance are terrible people, among other comments.
- Logo Joke: The Patreon logo at the end of each "Great: The Show" episode has a lyric from The Golden Girls theme song.
- Made of Iron: The narrator of Irod Bad boasts that the terrorists can't hurt Iron Man because he's made of iron, and invincible. The terrorists actually manage to shoot bullet holes in Iron Man while the narrator says this, but they disappear the next time he appears.
- The Many Deaths of You: Frumple's Quest
- May the Farce Be with You: Star Wumpis McGumpis summarizes Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in 1 minute, 17 seconds, with comedic results.
- Mind Screw: A few videos qualify, but Bowja From His Castle stands out.
- Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: At the end of "Frumple's Quest", Dust shoots Frumple in the head, fed-up with the latter constantly abusing him.
- Motor Mouth: The narrator of PigaDgrifm.
- Mundane Made Awesome: In Bella's segment of Great The Show episode 10, GV acts as if Bella's lesson about biscotti could change people's lives, even though Bella calls it something she thought everyone already knew, and not as thought-provoking as what she usually says in "Made Ya Think!"
- My Parents Are Dead: Featured in Batman's Halloween:Robin: Hey, Batman! Who are you going to be for Halloween?Batman: (after punching Robin) MY PARENTS ARE DEEEEEAAAAAAD!!!
- Mythology Gag: Irod Bad receives one in Star Wumpis McGumpis.Narrator of Irod Bad: Once Upon a Time, Tony Stark was just walking through the desert, when (explosion) he was kidnapped by terrorists!Narrator of Star Wumpis McGumpis: So, R2-D2 and C3PO were just walking through the desert, until they got kidnapped by elves!
- Negated Moment of Awesome: Super Mario Bros. Without Touching the Ground! becomes this when Ukinojoe accidentally lets Mario touch the ground.
- The Nicknamer: The narrator of Idiada Jones changes the names of everyone from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, except for that of Indy.
- No Indoor Voice:
- Neckbeard the pirate.
- The coach in "Donald and the Big Game."
- Non-Indicative Name: ARGO: An Accurate Summarization contains quite a few inaccuracies, such as getting the name of the country wrong (the narrator name-drops several Middle Eastern countries, but never Iran), and cutting off the ending. Then again, the narrator admits at the beginning that he only saw ARGO once before writing the summary.
- Noodle Incident: What happened to SpongeBob, anyway? Considering you can see his broken arm protruding from a secret compartment in Mr. Krabs’ desk, the answer cannot be a good one...
- Nostalgia Filter: Parodied in 90's Nick.
- "Not Making This Up" Disclaimer: ARGO: An Accurate Summarization contains one when terrorists climb into tiny Jeeps, then chase the airplane with the hostages down the runway. The narrator exclaims, "This all actually happened in real life!" (even though this specific scene only occurred in the movie).
- Orphaned Series: The first Frumplequest series.
- Our Product Sucks: "It's not good, it's BLONIC!"
- Perpetual Frowner/Not So Stoic: Walter White smiles exactly one time each in Fixing Good and Fixing Good 2. The former, when cooking HEISENburgers with Jesse, and the latter, when telling the punchline of his knock-knock joke. Walter's voice also sounds less gravelly, and more like Ukinojoe's normal voice.
- Perpetual Smiler: Blails and Jesse Pinkman never stop smiling in the BLONIC and Fixing Good videos, respectively.
- Platonic Life-Partners: With Danielle Kogan.
- Poorly Disguised Pilot: "Literally Hitler" serves as a backdoor pilot to Audrey and Victor (the duo were simply credited as "Child A" and "Child B", though they were referred to by name in the video itself).
- Promotional Consideration: Parodied in Great: The Show, which is sponsored by "The Delicious Honey", and later "Sun Corporation".
- Put on a Bus: Bella Caramella appears to have either taken a hiatus from or quit Great: The Show; she seemed rather disillusioned with "Made Ya Think!" in the first season finale, and the second season premiere has someone else give "A Word". She re-appeared in episode #13, but not in a "Made Ya Think!" segment.
- The Quiet One / The Voiceless: In The Grifms Meet the Sweatsons, Stewie never says a word. Neither does Dust from Frumple's Quest. Dust spoke only twice in the original Frumplequest series, and it was in the pilot. He did get a line or two in “Embarrassment”, though.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: The internet gives a pretty brutal one to the fat guy, which becomes faster and harder to make out as it goes on.
- Refugee from TV Land: In Blonic 2, Bluckles claims to be the actual Knuckles, trapped in the real world.
- Reused Character Design: ARGO: An Accurate Summarization uses the same design for Jack O'Donnell that Ukinojoe used for Walter White in Fixing Good (complete with phone), since Bryan Cranston played both of them. (The narrator even calls him, "Bryan Cranston", instead of, "Jack O'Donnell".)
- Rhymes on a Dime: Fixing Good has Jesse Pinkman demonstrate this skill.
- Rule 34: Hitler ends up painting this in "Literally Hitler". More specifically, foot fetish art of Dot Warner.
- Running Gag: Frumplquest looking for place to live in for the rest of his life.
- Sequelitis: Parodied in Eddie Murphy. After being told he only has 1000 movies left in him before he dies, Murphy decides he should make them good ones. Cut to his grave, which reads "Star of 1000 Norbit sequels".
- Shoot the Shaggy Dog: If you manage to find the treasure in Frumple's Quest, Frumplequest will tell Dust about it, before getting shot in the head by Dust, who takes the treasure and floats away on their boat.
- Shout-Out:
- "Remember Bobby's World? IT WAS A GOOD SHOW!"
- ARGO: An Accurate Summarization changes Tony's last name from Mendez to Montana, and has a number of characters remind him, "You're not Superman."note
- "Better Call Sull" is the iconic "Pimento" scene from Better Call Saul remade with Mike and Sulley. (or rather Joe's versions of them)
- Sir Swears-a-Lot: Irod Bad depicts the main character of Iron Man as this.
- Space Whale Aesop: Gift Horse warns the viewer not to look a gift horse in the mouth. Said horse will shoot him/her in the face otherwise.
- Speaking Simlish: The dogs in the "Dog of Wisdom" series all speak gibberish. Downplayed at one point in "Dog of Wisdom III", when the Chawawa says "I want moneys".
- Spoof Aesop: The Dog of Wisdom advises another dog, "If your ball is too big for your mouth, it's not yours."
- The Stinger:
- From Blonic 2, "I'm still here!"
- At the end of Frumple's Quest, despite the credits claiming otherwise, a bird pecks at Frumplequest's dead, skeletal body.
- In The Grifms Meet the Sweatsons, Stewie goes to visit Brian in Heaven. Unfortunately, his blimp crashes into the gates and explodes.
- Say My Name: From Great The Show 4, Jade, Jaaaddeee.
- Sick Episode: The "And Now...A Word" segment from episode 8 of Great The Show.
- Strange Minds Think Alike: In Great The Show 10, Bella and GV both react to the Delicious Honey's letter with, "What the fuck is this shit?"
- Stylistic Suck:
- Some of his animations (especially his 3D ones) are intentionally poor for the sake of Surreal Humor.
- "Bowja From His Cashle".
- He has recently started making assorted skits depicting badly drawn versions of Rick and Morty that take this trope up to 11.
- Sudden Downer Ending: Spice's Favorite Places to Sleep starts out cute, but ends with some Black Humor. The last three places shown consist of Joe's face, Joe's funeral, and Joe's grave, as Spice suffocates Joe, and no one bothers to remove the cat from his face.
- Take That!:
- VIRAL VIDEO COMMENTARY is a pretty blatant one towards Ray William Johnson.
- Also Eddie Murphy.
- "Italian American Car Salesman" is one towards reality shows that document totally banal subject matter.
- "Blonic" should be subtitled "Everything Wrong with the Sonic Fandom and OCs in General in Less than 30 Seconds."
- His "90s Nick" videos are this to people who won't stop bragging about the fact that they grew up in The '90s.
- Several of his Rick and Morty shorts have been jabs at various content including The Amazing Digital Circus, The Mysterious Mr. Enter, Supermental, and there's the fact that the entirety of the shorts started when Justin Roiland was removed from Rick and Morty.
- Take That, Audience!: YouTube Commenters and its sequel.
- Trademark Favorite Food:
- In BLONIC THE RESTAURANT, Blails asks if Blonic usually gets a chili dog, to which he replies "I think you're mistaking me for someone completely different!"
- For a while, bran cereal seemed to be headed towards this direction, more prominently in "Great: The Show".
- Tsundere: Squidward in We Gotta Get SpongeBob Back.Squidward: Ah, it sure is comfortable around here, now that SpongeBob's gone. I gotta get SpongeBob back! I GOTTA GET SPONGEBOB BACK!
- Twin Telepathy: In "Literally Hitler", Audrey and Victor display the ability to communicate telepathically. May be Downplayed at a later date, since it's unknown if they're actually twins.
- Unishment: In "Naughty", the two homeless kids (the proto-versions of Audrey and Victor) get a lump of coal from Santa. However, this is exactly what they wanted, as they needed fuel for the fire they are warming themselves by.
- Valentine's Day Episode: It's a sign!
- Vitriolic Best Buds:
- Internet is routinely mean to the fat guy, but the fat guy considers him his only friend.
- Victor is frequently annoyed by Audrey's optimism, but at the end of the day, they really do love each other, to the point Victor was willing to sacrifice himself to defeat Hitler.
- We Want Our Jerk Back!: When the internet turns nice, the fat guy becomes unhappy.
- With Lyrics: Irod Bad! and Idiada Jones do this to the guitar riff of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man", and the Indiana Jones theme, respectively.
