Broderick Stephen Harvey (born January 17, 1957) is an American television presenter, comedian, actor, broadcaster, author, game show host, businessman and philanthropist. After various stints as a boxer, an autoworker, an insurance salesman, a carpet cleaner, and a mailman, he first performed stand-up comedy in 1985 at the Hilarities Comedy Club in Cleveland, Ohio. He spent the late 1980s homeless, sleeping in his car during gigs that didn’t offer him a hotel room, but finally launched his comedy career as a finalist in the Second Annual Johnnie Walker National Comedy Search performing on April 16, 1990, eventually leading to a long stint as host of Showtime at the Apollo.

Since then, he has enjoyed a diverse career across television, frequently hosting various programs, as well as a handful of comedy films. He has also authored a handful of books and earned a boatload of awards for daytime television and his humanitarian activities.

Books

  • Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man (2009)
  • Straight Talk, No Chaser (2010)
  • Act Like a Success (2014)
  • Jump, Take the Leap of Faith to Achieve Your Life of Abundance (2016)

Steve Harvey provides examples of:

  • Large Ham: ESPECIALLY on Family Feud whenever a contestant provides an idiotic answer.
  • Papa Wolf: He's repeatedly stated during interviews that he raised his 4 daughters differently from his sons and has said he will attack and humiliate anyone who mistreats his daughters. He even says that he'll still be wary of his sons-in-law because he's prepared to drop all pretences of in-law relations as soon as he hears that they've mistreated his daughters. He's even praised other fathers for looking out for their daughters in the same way.
  • Porn Stache: A Harvey trademark.
  • Silent Snarker: To the point of Memetic Mutation, his reactions to ridiculous moments on Family Feud are legendary.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: You get a taste of it on his talk-show and on Family Feud, but take a listen to his sets on The Original Kings of Comedy. He was a close second for most curse words said, right after Bernie Mac himself.
  • Unlimited Wardrobe: Steve got this after he became a celebrity, as he practically never wears the same suit twice. His run on Family Feud proves it.
  • White Dude, Black Dude: He pioneered this routine; however, he also went to great lengths to show that the Black Dude was just as messed up and irrational as the White Dude, only in different ways. In his routines, the Black Dude's antics were likely to have him end up in far worse shape than he would have been if he wasn't so focused on the "black" way of doing things. The routines thus carried a hint of Stop Being Stereotypical to them while also being a Deconstructive Parody. Yet later "White Dude, Black Dude" routines by other comedians would only mock the White Dude, causing Harvey's routines to seem more harsh and self-critical in retrospect, despite predating many of these routines.
