The oldest operating film company in Japannote , Shochiku was established in 1895 as a Kabuki Theatre company and entered the film industry in 1920. Shochiku has distributed works by acclaimed directors such as Keisuke Kinoshita, Takeshi Kitano, Takashi Miike, Yasujiro Ozu, and Yoji Yamada. They also have a long-running relationship with animation studio Sunrise, having released most of their film output to theaters.
