Shelley Berman (February 3, 1925 – September 1, 2017) was an American standup comedian, actor, writer, teacher, and director. A popular contributor to Verve Records’ spoken word/comedy division, he was best known for Divorce American Style, Meet the Fockers, and You Don't Mess with the Zohan.
A native of Chicago, Berman served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Subsequently he studied drama at the Art Institute of Chicago and worked with an acting company in nearby Woodstock, Illinois. He was married to Sarah Herman and the couple had two children.
