"There's an old saying in Yorkshire, you know: It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice."

Paul Shane, born George Frederick Speight, (19 June 1940 — 16 May 2013), was a British actor best known for playing Ted Bovis in Hi-de-Hi!.

After a career as a pub singer, he started to play small parts on TV in The '70s. In May 1979, Jimmy Perry noticed him in an episode of Coronation Street and cast him as Ted Bovis in Hi-de-Hi!. When the series ended in 1988, Perry cast him in his new series, You Rang, M'Lord?, alongside his HDH co-stars, Jeffrey Holland and Su Pollard.

During the run of M'Lord?, he starred in the short-lived Very Big Very Soon as actor's agent Harry James. In the late '90s, he was once more reunited with Holland, Pollard, and David Croft (the producer and co-writer of HDH and YRML?) for one final Britcom, Oh, Doctor Beeching!, where Shane played stationmaster Jack Skinner.

He died at the age of 72.
