Nagisa Oshima (大島 渚, Ōshima Nagisa, March 31, 1932 – January 15, 2013) was a Japanese film director, screenwriter and TV show host.
He was primarily concerned with depicting the contradictions and tensions in post-World War II Japanese society, and his films tend to expose contemporary materialism while also examining what it means to be Japanese in the face of rapid industrialization and Westernization. Sexual tension in all forms is a Central Theme of many of his films.
Declining health, mostly a series of strokes, resulted in Oshima directing only one film over the last 27 years of his life. In his later years he was, of all things, an occasional judge on the original Japanese TV cooking show Iron Chef.
