Tropes exclusive to the graphic novels

  • Adaptation-Induced Plot Hole: In the graphic novel adaptation of The Dark Secret, Starflight mentions that Queen Scarlet had him fight scavengers in the arena. While that's true in the original book, that never happened in the graphic novel version; it only had Starflight and Tsunami's "fight" and the IceWings' deaths.
  • Adapted Out: The Dragonet Prophecy has a completely different prologue; Hvitur doesn't appear at all, and instead it begins with the surviving Talons of Peace talking about Aisha's death just before the eggs hatch.
  • Bowdlerise: A lot of the graphic violence is either reduced or removed; for example, Queen Scarlet killing Hvitur isn't shown, and no dragons are shown killing humans.
  • Disabled in the Adaptation: In the book, Osprey couldn't fly because his tail was damaged. The graphic novel changes this to him having lost his wings.
  • Dreaming of Things to Come: In The Dragonet Prophecy, Clay has a nightmare of what Scarlet is going to do to the other four Dragonets and Kestrel. Part of the dream shows Sunny in a round cage. When him, Tsunami, and Glory reunite with her near the end of the book, guess what Scarlet has done to her.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: The Hidden Kingdom has Starflight's body blocking most of the dying sloth and the panel only shows Glory when he asks Clay to end its suffering.
  • Imagine Spot: Clay's birth siblings ask if he'd like to join them. On the positive side, he could have fun with them, protect them from danger, teach them everything he knows, and just be a big brother to them overall. On the negative side, he'd have to leave his friends forever, he'd get scolded for not knowing how to lead a group of MudWings, go into war with his siblings, and watching them die.
  • Spared by the Adaptation: In The Dragonet Prophecy, the scavenger that Clay and Tsunami encounter (named Mushroom in Dragonslayer) had his head bitten off courtesy of Scarlet. In the graphic novel adaptation, he runs away from them before Scarlet shows up. The two scavengers named Cardinal and Arbutus in Dragonslayer don't appear at all, so it's safe to assume that they are still alive as well. The adaptation of The Dark Secret puts that into question, though.
