The Ultimates 3 is the third miniseries of The Ultimates, set in the Ultimate Marvel universe. Released in 2008, it was written by Jeph Loeb and drawn by Joe Madureira.

The Ultimates, now an independent group living in Tony Stark's mansion, and with Henry Pym facing house arrest in the basement. The Scarlet Witch is killed by a sniper while she goes for a walk with Quicksilver, and the Brotherhood attacks the mansion afterwards so that Magneto reclaims her body. He leaves to the Savage Land, and Quicksilver joins him. The killer was Ultron, who had built an army of robot versions of the Ultimates. The real Ultimates defeat their counterparts and Ultron, and Quicksilver seems to be killed in the battle. Magneto, having lost both of his children, swears vengeance.

To be continued... in Ultimatum.

Tropes

  • All There in the Manual: Ultimate Captain America Annual #1 reveals the backstory of Black Panther: there is indeed an Ultimate T'Challa and Steve allowed him to escape S.H.I.E.L.D. custody and impersonated him to throw Fury off about the escape.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Valkyrie slices off Pyro's hands in retaliation for his role in the Attempted Rape of her.
  • Attempted Rape: Mastermind and Pyro try to rape Valkyrie while she's under one of the former's illusions, but she snaps out of it before they can do anything more than Mastermind licking her face.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are in love. It was hinted in the previous volumes, and confirmed here.
  • Bullet Catch: Subverted. Quicksilver tried to grab the bullet fired to Wanda, but to no avail: the bullet simply left a hole in his hand.
  • Covers Always Lie: The page image comes with one of the covers to issue 1, featuring Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hank Pym as Giant-Man, the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Captain America and Black Panther. The first two never show up in the issue and while Wolverine is a main character, Spider-Man just cameos in issue 2; Hank never dresses up as Giant-Man; the main story is kicked off by the Scarlet Witch's death and Quicksilver rejoins the Brotherhood; and while it'd be revealed there is an Ultimate T'Challa, Cap is just impersonating him throughout the story. The villains variant features Venom siding with the Brotherhood, even though the "Venom" who appears in a creation of Ultron and only does so briefly at the start of issue 1, having nothing to do with the Brotherhood. Additionally, both covers can be combined, showing the two groups about to fight each other, something that doesn't happen in that particular issue.
  • Death Seeker: Haunted by the death of his family, Hawkeye does not care about anything, and is willing to take any stupid life-threatening risks he faces. Such as attacking Wolverine for no reason.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: Who killed the Scarlet Witch? Captain America, for her indecent costume? Hawkeye, to keep the incest under wraps? Black Panther, a new guy we know nothing about and may be a villain? Magneto or one of his lackeys, for betraying the Brotherhood? Nope. It was Ultron, a service robot that had hardly been more than a mere Mythology Gag before that point.
  • Face–Heel Turn: The Pyro of Ultimate Marvel started off as a case of Adaptational Heroism, even joining the X-Men. Then comes this series, where he not only joins the Brotherhood like his traditional counterpart, but also becomes a case of Adaptational Jerkass as not even the Pyro of Earth-616 would suggest rape as an activity.
  • Foreshadowing: Blob's threat to eat the Wasp, which he makes good on in Ultimatum.
  • Home Porn Movie: A sex tape of Tony Stark and the recently deceased Natasha Romanov is leaked to the public. The tape is later revealed to have been recorded by Ultron for unknown reasons.
  • Lecherous Licking: Mastermind does this to Valkyrie when he and Pyro have her.
  • Leeroy Jenkins: Hey, Hawkeye! Don't fight Venom alone! Wait for backup! Oh, well, it was worth trying...
  • Moral Guardians
    • The Scarlet Witch took a suit highly more revealing than the older one. Captain America suggests, to no avail, that she should refrain from wearing that in public.
    • Hawkeye is concerned about the disaster in public relations
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: As far as Wanda's concerned, there only one "side": Quicksilver's side.
  • Off with His Head!: Mastermind gets beheaded by Valkyrie in retaliation for his role in the Attempted Rape of her.
  • Robotic Reveal: While most of the team is off chasing Magneto, Wasp finds that Hank has been knocked out. She's saved from an attack by Iron Man, who then takes off his armor's faceplate to reveal that he's also a robot.
  • Sequel Hook: At the end, Magneto swears to get revenge on the world for what happened to his kids, leading into Ultimatum.
  • Spoiler Title: While the solicitations for the issues tried to keep the death that kicked off the plot a secret, the collected edition bluntly reveals it with the subtitle "Who Killed the Scarlet Witch?"
  • Suicide by Cop: Hawkeye nearly goads Wolverine into killing him by shooting him from a short distance.
  • Wolverine Publicity: Wolverine and Spider-Man appear in the cover of the first issue, but not in it. They appear later, but with minor roles.
  • Worst Aid: Wanda has been shot, and a doctor tries to help with CPR.
