How To Train Your Dragon: The Serpent's Heir is a How to Train Your Dragon Graphic Novel published by Dark Horse in 2017.

The story opens just after the end of How to Train Your Dragon 2 with Berk rebuilding after Drago's attack. Amongst the chaos, a representative of King Mikkel arrives ask for help in investigating the strange tremors that are wracking his island kingdom of Nepenthe.

Hiccup and the dragon riders set out to Nepenthe, where they find an picturesque island with relaxing hot pools and the ruler, King Mik ("King Mikkel was my father"), who is more interested in strumming his guitar on the beach than doing anything about the quakes. But all is not as it seems as the dragon riders quickly find out.

The comic provides examples of:

  • Antagonist Title: Calder calls himself the Serpent's Heir as he believes he is a dragon.
  • Bait-and-Switch: On the trip to Nepenthe, some sea dragons appear out of the ocean and look as if they are going to attack the boat and the dragon riders. They are actually there to pay tribute to Toothless (their new alpha) by offering him mouthfuls of fresh fish to eat. The sea dragons then escort everyone to Nepenthe.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: After the dragon riders arrive at Nepenthe with Calder, a giant earthquake briefly occurs. When it stops, Ruffnut and Tuffnut ask if there are any outhouses available.
  • Continuity Nod: Upon hearing of Nepenthe's seismic troubles, Fishlegs brings up the Whispering Death and Screaming Death dragons whose tunneling sunk several islands in Dragons: Riders of Berk.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: Calder ends up falling off a cliff while burning alive.
  • Foil: King Mik is a foil to Hiccup. Just like Hiccup, he is a rather young ruler for his people. Unlike Hiccup, he is pretty carefree and does not concern himself with responsibility, preferring to relax instead of do anything beneficial.
  • Immediate Sequel: This comic opens up very recently after the 2nd film. Berk still has wrecked buildings and broken pieces of large ice laying around after Drago and his Bewilderbeast attacked the isle.
  • Orphaned Punchline: As the story flashes back to Tuffnut enjoying the hot pools, he's saying So I said "Sandtrapper?! I Hardly Know Her!" as the tail end of some sort of apparently hilarious joke.
  • That's No Moon: The tremors plaguing the island are because the gigantic Foreverwing dragons that they thought were the island mountains are waking from their slumber.
  • Turtle Island: The mountains of Nepenthe are actually six Foreverwing dragons that have been hibernating for centuries.
  • Trans Nature: Calder believes that he is a dragon born as a man and seeks to take Toothless's wings for his own.
