* {{Foil}}: King Mik is a foil to Hiccup. Just like Hiccup, he is a rather young ruler for his people. Unlike Hiccup, he is pretty carefree and does not concern himself with responsibility, preferring to relax instead of do anything beneficial.

Hiccup and the dragon riders set out to Nepenthe, where they find an picturesque island with relaxing hot pools and the ruler, King Mik ("King Mikkel was my father"), who is more interested in strumming his guitar on the beach than doing anything about the quakes. But all is not as it seems as the dragon riders quickly find out.

* ImmediateSequel: This comic opens up very recently after the 2nd film. Berk still has wrecked buildings and broken pieces of large ice laying around after Drago and his Bewilderbeast attacked the isle.

* BaitAndSwitch: On the trip to Nepenthe, some sea dragons appear out of the ocean and look as if they are going to attack the boat and the dragon riders. They are actually there to pay tribute to Toothless by offering him mouthfuls of fresh fish to eat. The sea dragons then escort everyone to Nepenthe.

''How To Train Your Dragon: The Serpent's Heir'' is a GraphicNovel published by Creator/DarkHorse in 2017.

The story opens just after the end of ''WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragon2'' with Berk rebuilding after Drago's attack. Amongst the chaos, a representative of King Mikkel arrives ask for help in investigating the strange tremors that are wracking his island kingdom of Nepenthe.

!!The comic provides examples of:

* AntagonistTitle: [[spoiler: Calder]] calls himself the Serpent's Heir as he believes he is a dragon.
* ContinuityNod: Upon hearing of Nepenthe's seismic troubles, Fishlegs brings up the Whispering Death and Screaming Death dragons whose tunneling sunk several islands in ''WesternAnimation/DragonsRidersOfBerk''.
* OrphanedPunchline: As the story flashes back to Tuffnut enjoying the hot pools, he's saying So I said "Sandtrapper?! I Hardly Know Her!" as the tail end of some sort of apparently hilarious joke.
* ThatsNoMoon: The tremors plaguing the island are because [[spoiler: the gigantic Foreverwing dragons that they thought were the island mountains are waking from their slumber.]]
* TransNature: [[spoiler: Calder]] believes that he is a dragon born as a man and seeks to take Toothless's wings for his own.
