A Black Comedy/Prison story by the short-lived DC Focus imprint. Junior High Student Ethan Harrow and his best friend conduct a fake school shooting as a prank, only for Ethan to discover, too late, that his friend doesn't intend it as just a prank. Ethan accidentally kills his friend with dormant telekinetic abilities while trying to stop him. Sentenced to fifty years to life in a maximum security prison, Ethan tries to survive, while discovering more about his powers, and making both friends and enemies on the inside.

Hard Time was the longest running DC Focus title, being briefly continued by Vertigo Comics after DC Focus folded.

Tropes:

  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: "Fruitcake" Mullins is a very zany guy, but he's also the only person with a good idea about Ethan's powers.
  • Convicted by Public Opinion: Ethan maintains that he was, and that this influenced his trial.
  • Crusading Lawyer: Julius and Truth Rosenberg, a pair of these portrayed in a bad light — as the Distant Finale reveals, they were only interested in Ethan's hot-button case as a way to grab headlines. The second they thought associating with Ethan might reflect badly on them, they abandoned him.
  • Distant Finale: The final issue takes place during Ethan's parole hearing and recounts the fates of his fellow prisoners.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The Distant Finale shows that Cindy was the only character who got a truly happy ending; she does her time, becomes a successful beautician which earns her enough money to transition, and marries a guy who loves her for who she is. Compare Ethan, who serves his whole fifty years Curly who gets paroled and dies of cancer a few months later Fruitcake who dies in prison and Cole who gets paroled and quickly dies during an attempted robbery.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Aryan Brotherhood Boss Raeder is very polite, and very, very threatening .
  • Gangbanger: Arturo, who enters the prison a somewhat cocky guy ,self-assured due to his inside connections.
  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: Arturo's pregnant girlfriend Mercedes, while a bit uneasy, agrees to have the baby.
  • Kill It with Fire: Gantry likes setting those he sees as "sinners" on fire.
  • Long-Lost Relative: Ethan's cellmate Curly has a girl revealed to be his granddaughter arrive to visit him (he'd gotten her mother pregnant during the Vietnam War and then been separated with her).
  • Mentor Archetype:
    • George Cole, who is brought to the prison on the same bus as Ethan, Arturo and Gatherwood. Cole is a repeat offender who gives Ethan some advice about how to survive in prison, tries to keep his cellmate Deshon from falling in with Gantry. and even tries to take some of this role to Cindy after they become cellmates.
    • Curly also acts as a friend and guide to his new cellmate at times.
  • Orphaned Series: Just barely averted. The series was cancelled right in the middle of a storyline (and on a cliffhanger, no less), but the writers were given one more issue to wrap things up with. They used this opportunity to use Wall of Text to not only lay out how the current story would have been resolved, but gave a general layout of the storylines that were planned to that point.
  • Pædo Hunt: A unique after the fact example. Lewis Gatherwood raped and killed a young girl, and inside the prison is a nervous, seemingly remorseful wreck who just about everyone loathes and goes after.
  • Parent with New Paramour: Ethan is chagrined when his mom starts dating his first lawyer.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: When Arturo finds out the Aryans made an attempt on Mercedes life he goes charging at the nearest two with murder in his eyes. He succeeds.
  • Sanity Slippage: Deshon, after falling under Gantry's sway.
  • Science Hero: Ethan is a good tinkerer, best shown when He turns himself into a taser through some electricity conduction.
  • The Shrink: Prison psychiatrist Dinkins. He's a bit of a burn out, but helpful at times, such as when needed to declare Deshon crazy and send him out of there.
  • The Stoic: George Cole is good at maintaining a straight expression.
  • Their First Time: Ethan loses his virginity to Red during one of her visits.
  • Villainous Rescue: Preacher Gantry is a fairly twisted guy, but his first scene has him saving Ethan from being attacked by the Aryan Brotherhood.
  • Wardens Are Evil: Downplayed, the man is fairly cold and strict at times, such as when he tosses Ethan in solitary over a Crime of Self-Defense, but isn't sadistic or corrupt.
