This time... it's spicy!

Son of one of Tokyo's most prolific and powerful gangsters, Jiro secretly harbors a hidden passion for the art of sushi and is training to become a chef under a master.

Get Jiro: Blood and Sushi is the 2015 prequel to Get Jiro! published by Vertigo Comics, co-written by Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose.

This comic provides examples of:

  • But Not Too Foreign: Jiro is in a relationship with the interracial Miyako. While she is half-Japanese, her Italian-half rubs Jiro's family the wrong way.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: When Jiro's father finds out that he has been working to become a chef, he tells him to give up on this dream, since he plans on passing down his position as head of their mob onto him.
  • Girlfriend in Canada: When Ichigo starts noticing that Jiro runs off to something without telling anyone what it is, he guesses that it's a girl. While Jiro actually is in a relationship with someone, the real reason why he goes off after work is because he is being trained to be a sushi chef.
  • Important Haircut: After his brother is killed by his sushi chef teacher, Jiro has his head shaved before leaving for America.
  • Naughty Tentacles: At the beginning of the story, Ichigo asks if his brother wants to see a strip-show based around this concept.
Ichigo: Ready for some squid-on-girl action?
  • Self-Made Orphan: When Ichigo finds out that his father intends on passing his position down to Jiro instead of him, he runs his father through with his sword.
  • Unexpected Successor: Jiro's father reveals that he intended him to take over as head of their mob despite the fact that Jiro doesn't want the position. He reveals that he overlooked Ichigo, who is the oldest and actually wants the job, because he is too Ax-Crazy to handle the logistical and formal side of things.
  • Yakuza: The gang that Jiro's family is a part of has shades of this; black and white suits with sunglasses, samurai swords, an odd predilection towards finger-dismemberment, etc.
