Firewake is a science-fantasy thriller comic series created and written by Devon McBride-Wilson, and published by Rabbit Valley Comic Shop.

It follows Detective Firewake, a veteran detective in the big city of Addax, as he deals with the stresses of a wife and twin colts (more on that in a moment), high-profile cases, and, most recently, his cocky rookie partner, Zaffa.

But Firewake and Zaffa are tested like never before as they are drawn into investigating and pursuing Sable Nox, a disturbed criminal mastermind bent on taking over the planet.

The interesting thing is, these characters, and every other sentient being on the planet, is a colorful unicorn, with varying levels of 'magical' potential. But they are no strangers to technology, either; it's been combined with magic to create even more advanced and powerful tech, including equivalents of laser guns, flying cars, giant skyscrapers, and even starships.

Unlike other franchises featuring unicorns, Firewake has a darker and grittier edge to it, echoing both cyberpunk and film noir genres.

The first issue displays this well, as Firewake investigates a series of daylight bank robberies done by a formerly low-level gang. He and Zaffa set in motion a plan to trap them, but not everything goes as expected.

Even more information can be found at the comic's own website or at the publisher's page for it.

Firewake contains examples of:

  • Chain Pain: Graith, who has magically bonded with her chains, letting her control them by thought.
  • Everyone Is a Super: As Firewake recounts, EVERY Monocern progresses through varying levels of magical power.
  • Glowing Flora: Several kinds of plants and flowers in Fancyber's Garden.
  • Green Thumb: Fancyber is a biomancer of the highest order.
  • Making a Splash: Zaffa uses a water-blasting attack.
  • Mind over Matter: Every Monoceran has this to some degree, neatly avoiding Feather Fingers.
  • Old Cop, Young Cop: Firewake and Zaffa, though Firewake is a little younger than the typical 'old cop'.
  • People Jars: Dr. Ion's foetal Chimeras are stored in small, green liquid-filled canisters.
  • Technopath: Zigzagged, as every Monoceran seems to control technology at least a little bit.
  • Unicorn: The Monocerans in this series have metallic colors in their coats, and are somewhat less kid-friendly.
