Big, strong, and angry.note

UT2004 description of Juggernauts

Axon's own team, Juggernauts, led by Gorge, and the team responsible for dethroning long-time champion Malcolm. In 2004, Axon entered a second team, called "Goliath", in hopes of producing an all-Juggernaut finals.

In general

  • Adaptation Name Change: Diva in Championship is Rylisa in 2003 and 2004.
  • Ax-Crazy:
    • Ambrosia strangled a weightlifting judge in a fit of rage.
    • Cannonball is a career criminal said to be "the offspring of a trash compactor and a tank": big, ugly and with the personality of a rabid grizzly.
  • Badass Crew: Criminals with augmented suits.
  • Bald of Evil: Frostbite, who's mentioned as an Ax-Crazy person whose aura can freeze even the hottest of characters.
  • Bio-Augmentation: The Juggernauts are all geneboosted humans. They're also (with the exception of Arclite) all career criminals who were forced into it.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Siren is the blonde, Reinha is the brunette and Ambrosia and Diva/Rylisa are the redheads.
  • Character Tiers: invoked In 2004, Goliath is placed in the "Weak" tier, and Juggernauts are placed in the "Strong" tier. After the Team Qualification round, Goliath isn't fought anymore.
  • Mighty Glacier: In Championship, they have the highest amount of starting health (190) and the strongest defense attributes. In exchange, they have the lowest speed attributes. This remains true with 2004's "Species Statistics" mutator.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Siren sports some orange-ish eyes, and her description mentions that not only was she beaten up with an ugly stick, but also had DNA from the tree spliced directly into her genes.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: Reinha sports one and Rylisa two. And they're both hardened contestants.
  • Weapon Specialization:
    • Ambrosia favors the Flak Cannon in Championship, dealing 20% more damage with it than other characters.
    • Cannonball favors the Lightning Gun in all games. In Championship, he deals 20% more damage with it than other characters.
    • Diva favors the Lightning Gun as well in Championship, firing 20% faster.

    • Reinha favors the Shock Rifle in Championship, dealing 20% more damage with it.
    • Siren favors the Flak Cannon in 2003 and 2004. In Championship she instead favors the Bio Rifle, having 20% more ammo capacity for it.
    • All the clone characters share the same weapon affinities as their playable counterparts in Championship.

Prometheus Georgian "Gorge" Pithras

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gorge_9364.jpg
You wouldn't like him when he's angry...

"This time, HE'S MINE!!!"
Unreal Tournament 2003's single-player intro cutscene.

A former inmate of the Allerian Penal Colony, Gorge is the leader of Axon's team of Juggernauts, geneboosted humans. He was responsible for breaking Malcolm's winning spree and his back in the 2302 tournament. (Unreal Tournament 2003)

It is unknown if the Juggernauts team made it to the finals of the next year's tournament, (Unreal Tournament 2004) where Axon also sponsored another team of Juggernauts called Goliath.

Gorge would have became a Tournament star, and have everything to his favour, but his rough treat of his fanbase damaged his reputation, and Malcolm's fans still outnumber his.

Tropes related to him:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Has his own ladder in Unreal Championship 2.
  • Ascended Extra: In Unreal Tournament 2003 he was just another skin/model to choose for your Player Character. Cue Unreal Tournament 2004, and he was the one who dethroned Malcolm. He made the cut for Unreal Championship 2 but he doesn't have any involvement in the game, aside of being the protagonist of some of the challenges.
  • Ax-Crazy: He's said to be "a predator with a sweet tooth for suffering".
  • BFG: In Championship, he favors the Rocket Launcher, starting with it and having 20% more ammo capacity for the weapon.
  • Bio-Augmentation: He's a geneboosted human. He's also a career criminal, like any other juggernaut.
  • Cast from Lifespan: His "Unstoppable" adrenaline combo in Unreal Championship 2 allows him to be invulnerable, but at the cost of his health being drained at a rate.
  • Condemned Contestant: An inmate from the Allerian Penal Colony fighting for his life in the Tournaments.
  • Cutscene Power to the Max: In the 2004 opening cutscene of the SP, Gorge can ram opponents to knock them down before filling them full of lead (ramming is not a move in the game).
  • Cutting Off the Branches: 2004 and Unreal championship 2 state that the canonical winner of 2003's Tournament is Gorge, who broke Malcolm's streak and his spine in the process.
  • Delinquent Hair: His subtle mohawk.
  • Easter Egg: In his 2003/2004 portrait, he has something similar to a MP3 player.
  • Final Boss: Of Malcolm's ladder in Championship 2. He's also one of the two bosses in the three-way matches at the end of both Anubis's and Brock's.
  • Ground Pound: His "Smash" adrenaline combo in Unreal Championship 2 causes one.
  • Heal Thyself: His "Heal" adrenaline combo in Unreal Championship 2 heals up to 50% of his health.
  • Megaton Punch: His starting melee attack in Unreal Championship 2 is just a geneboosted punch.
"No fancy technology involved here. Juggernauts use their gene-boosted strength and horrifying rage to attack with armored fists. Don’t laugh; you'll just make them mad."
  • The Rival: Malcolm, after Unreal Tournament 2003. It begins with him breaking his streak and his spine, and goes downward from there.
  • Secret Character: In UC2, he's unlocked after winning Malcolm's ladder.
  • Status Buff: His "Berserk" adrenaline combo in Unreal Championship 2, combined with X-Ray Vision.
  • Unknown Rival: In his UC2 ladder, Jackhammer is seen as a thorn in his side, being fought thrice before he moves on to "more important things".

Marvin "Arclite" Hunter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/arclite_6566.jpg

A geneboosted human who's playing in the Tournament in the same team as Gorge, Axon's Juggernauts.

He comes back for Unreal Championship 2, but otherwise, he doesn't have much of an involvement. Unlike his teammates, he's not a convict. He hates violence, and it's in the Arena just to show his new genetic makeup. Being in the Tournaments doesn't make him happy. Which doesn't mean that he can't kick as much ass as his teammates.

Tropes related to him:

  • A Day in the Limelight: He has an own ladder in Unreal Championship 2.
  • Ascended Extra: Just one of Gorge's teammates in 2004, made the cut for Unreal Championship 2.
  • Bio-Augmentation: He's geneboosted like his fellow combatants.
  • Cast from Lifespan: His "Unstoppable" adrenaline combo in Unreal Championship 2 allows him to be invulnerable, but at the cost of his health being drained at a rate.
  • Heal Thyself: His "Heal" adrenaline combo in Unreal Championship 2 heals up to 50% of his health.
  • Martial Pacifist: He hates violence, but he can kick ass as much as amy of his companions.
  • Megaton Punch: His starting melee attack in Unreal Championship 2, much like Gorge and Jackhammer, is a regular punch.
  • The Rival: Sapphire in UC2. Both of their ladders make a deal out of this.
  • Status Buff: His "Berserk" adrenaline combo in Unreal Championship 2, combined with X-Ray Vision.
  • Weapon Specialization:
    • In Championship, he favors the Bio Rifle, starting with it and dealing 20% more damage with it than other characters.
    • In 2003 and 2004, he favors the Minigun.

    Supernova/Iron Guard (Humans)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ut2004_supernova_members.jpg
You can't have a game without humans.note
"Somewhat more rugged than their earthly counterparts, the Mercs of the 7th Fleet suffer from none of the vulnerabilities that make their opponents easier targets."
UT2004 description of Supernova

"Brock and Lauren joined forces with Malcolm during his reign as tournament champion. Infighting and recrimination over their stunning defeat in last year's Tournament led to the dissolution of that team. Now, Brock and Lauren have returned leading their old team, the Iron Guard."
UT2004 description of Iron Guard

Members:
Supernova: Perish (leader), Nemesis, Ariel, Wraith, Faith, Phantom, Nova, Dragon
Iron Guard: Brock, Lauren, Wraith, Mystique, Remus, Satin, Xantares, Prism
Playable: BlackJack, Prism, Remus, Romulus, Sapphire, Satin, Torch, Wraith

For tropes related to the Iron Guard UT team including Brock and Lauren, check the UT character sheet.

In general

  • Badass Crew: Either in Supernova or the already (in-universe) popular Iron Guard, humans can still kick as much ass as the other races, if not moreso.
  • Character Tiers: invoked Supernova is located in the "Weak" tier. After the Team Qualification round, they aren't fought anymore.
  • Cold Sniper: In 2003 and 2004, she has the highest amount of accuracy, at the cost of below-average stats everywhere else, and her weapon of choice is the Lightning Gun.
  • Cool Shades: Sapphire and Torch have colorful shades.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: BlackJack, as a bot, has one of the highest accuracy stats among the characters in the game, solely surpassed by actual Tournament champions such as Malcolm, Brock and Lauren. However, the rest of her stats are... below average, to say the least.
  • Gas Mask Mooks: Romulus and Remus sport one.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: Prism, Remus, BlackJack, Sapphire and Torch use either glasses or goggles. Those have no effect in the game.
  • Jack of All Stats: All their stats are even, at 100%, even in Championship and with the "Species Statistics" mutator in 2004.
  • Weapon Specialization:
    • Remus favors the Bio Rifle. In Championship, he instead favors the Link Gun, carrying 20% more ammo for the weapon.

    • Torch and Wraith favor the Shock Rifle in Championship, dealing 20% more damage with the weapon.

Patrice "Sapphire" LeBlanc

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sapphire_904.jpg
And this kind of hotness fights to the death...

Hyena: I heard when Anubis beat Darius, he... he ripped his arms off and ate them! Hahaha.
Sapphire: Then let's gang up on him.
Hyena: No, no, the Liandri don't like cheating! Hmhm.
Sapphire: No, not unless it's their idea.
Unreal Championship 2 cutscene.

A mercenary and former leader of the Supernova team in the 2302 Tournament, (Unreal Tournament 2003) she joined Brock and Lauren to in the reformed version of Iron Guard. (Unreal Tournament 2004)

She became famous, and changed her look for her next-year participation in the 2304 tournament. (Unreal Championship 2)

She's said to stop her opponent's heart in more than one way.

Tropes related to her:

  • Ascended Extra: Went from being the team leader of Super Nova (then just another team with bots and no bio) in 2003 and Championship to being part of Iron Guard in 2004, and finally made the cut for UC2. For this incarnation, she was revamped, visuals-wise.
  • BFG: In Championship, she favors the Rocket Launcher, carrying 20% more ammo for the weapon.
  • Cat Fight: Her Overdose challenge pits her against three other women. It also invokes the trope name as the title of the challenge:
"Liandri promoters have been begging for this match since the Ascension Rites began. This pay per view event is more to break viewing records, and for eight more reasons."
  • A Day in the Limelight: Has her own ladder in Unreal Championship 2.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: In UC2, though her own team was disbanded mid-season, and she never caught on with the ratings, she finally won her part of the Tournament, and it's implied in Anubis's ladder that she also won a place in Thunder Crash, alongside Malcolm himself!
  • Final Boss: Of Arclite's Ladder, alongside Darrius.
  • Heal Thyself: Her "Heal" adrenaline combo in UC2 heals up to 50% of her health.
  • Missile Lock-On: Her "Homing" adrenaline combo in UC2 makes her projectiles to home on her enemies.
  • The Rival: Arclite in UC2. Both of their ladders make a big deal of this.
  • Start My Own: After being a member of Supernova and Iron Guard, in UC2 she starts a new team, called "The Bargain Hunters", in order to get the attention she always wanted.

    Sun Blade (Anubans)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ut2004_sunblade_members.jpg
Unlike their Earth counterparts, they succeeded.note
"Sun Blade is comprised of former Temple Guardians and veterans of the Desert Legion. They see victory in the Tournament as their only hope for burial and eternal life in the Valley of Kings on Luxor IV."
UT2004 description

  • Competitive Balance: In Championship and with the "Species Statistics" mutator in 2004, they're located between Jack of All Stats and Fragile Speedster. • Goggles Do Nothing: Roc's and Hyena's helmets have visors that have no effect on gameplay.

  • Lobotomy: Booster/Fate was sentenced to deletion of personality and became a bounty hunter.

  • Hidden Depths: Baird is a case of Beware the Quiet Ones, as (according to his bio) he's usually reserved and quiet until he enters an arena, where he turns into a "raging motor mouth until he's decimated every single opponent".
  • The Lad-ette:
    • Zarina is a "regular party machine" who fights while intoxicated, believing the deed to give her an edge.
    • Kaela can kill you with her foul language or her weapon.
  • Stripperiffic: Kaela and Rae have very revealing outfits.
  • Weapon Specialization:
    • As a bot, Greith uses more often the Shock Rifle.
    • As a bot, Ophelia uses more often the Link Gun.
    • As a bot, Outlaw uses more often the Flak Cannon.
    • As a bot, Garrett uses more often the Rocket Launcher.

    Iron Skull Skaarj

P.S.: They don't like you.note
"This year, the Skaarj Empire is represented by the Iron Skull clan, who seek to regain honor after long being held responsible for the loss of the Skaarj Mothership during the Human/Skaarj wars."
UT2004 description

Members: ClanLord, Drekorig, Dominator, Guardian, Gaargod, Gkublok, Skakruk, Kraagesh
Playable: ClanLord, Drekorig, Dominator, Guardian, Gaargod, Gkublok, Skakruk, Kraagesh

In general

  • Ascended Extra Guardian and Dominator were just selectable skins in the first Tournament game, and to add insult to injury, they weren't even shipped, but instead came with one of the free expansion packs. Dominator's case goes even further, as he (as a pure Skaarj, not as a Skaarj Hybrid) was an unplayable boss character in the console versions, with his features being kept almost unchanged.
  • The Atoner: A villainous version, all of the members fight for the honor of their race after the events of the Human/Skaarj wars disgraced it.
  • Ax-Crazy: Skakruk eats the marrow of his enemies, and credits the deed for his power.
  • Boss Tease: The opening cutscene of the single-player ladder features Dominator stabbing Romulus. You have a chance of facing Iron Skull at the end of each of the team ladders, and if they're the best ranked Godlike team, you face them in the finals.
  • Character Tiers: invoked Iron Skull Skaarj is located in the Godlike tier. If they're the best placed team, they're fought in the Finals.
  • Cutscene Power to the Max: Dominator can stab an opponent with his Wolverine Claws. Said claws are unusable in the game proper.
  • Glass Cannon: With the "Species Statistics" mutator in 2004, they have bonuses on air control and jump height (making them second to the Anubans on the issue), at the expense of taking more damage.
  • Promoted to Playable: Dominator was one of the four bosses on the Playstation 2/Sega Dreamcast versions of the first Tournament game. In 2004, he can be selected right from the start.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: Stated in-game to be this, spanning as far as Unreal.
  • Red Baron: Gkublok was nicknamed "Walking Death" during his time on Na Pali.
  • Weapon Specialization:
    • As a bot, Skakruk favors the Flak Cannon.
    • As bots, Dominator and Guardian favor the Rocket Launcher.

Skaarj ClanLord

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Clanlord_9791.jpg

The leader of the main Skaarj clan, Iron Skull, sent by the Skaarj Empire, in order to purge their guilt for allowing the destruction of the Skaarj Mothership in the Seven-Years War. He's one of the finalists the player may found in the 2303 tournament. (Unreal Tournament 2004)

The status of both him and the Iron Skull clan are, as of now, unknown.

Tropes related to him:

  • Attack! Attack! Attack!: He's totally focused on killing you, no matter the match. Smart players can use this to their advantage.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: It's right in the name.
  • Final Boss: Should Iron Skull get the best score of the Godlike teams in the Ladder, you'll face first his team, and then him.
