    Anubis
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anubis_1439.jpg
Anubis: The only thing I ever feared was what I saw in your heart. I tested you. And you failed.
Selket: I failed? You were the one who turned tail and ran.
Anubis: Your power-mad family arranged our marriage. But I didn't cared about that. I loved you. I left the Tournament to see what you wanted more: an emperor, or a husband.
To Selket near the end of the Ascension Rites.

Voiced by: Dameon Clarke

The main character of Unreal Championship 2, Anubis is a prince of the illustrios Reydi family, whose ancestors include 14 former Nakhti Emperors. Favored to win the tournament ten years ago, Anubis left on the eve of the competition. Some say he was a coward; others speculate that political scheming forced him from the tournament. He has served in the Desert Legion for over a decade, honing his combat skills and revealing none of his secrets.

In the game, he signs up for the Ascension Rites (now sponsored by the Liandri Corporation) with his friend Sobek, in order to stop Selket from becoming the Empress and thus condemning the Nakhti citizens to slavery in the hands of the Liandri Corporation.

Tropes related to him:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Aside of the Ascension Rites, he has his own ladder, unlocked after beating the Rites. It follows him in the aftermath of the Rites' events.
  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Subverted. In the finals' aftermath, a Liandri officer convinces him to both resurrect Selket via the highly expendable Necrification process and to fight in the main Tournament.
Liandri officer: It needn't end this way. She needn't end this way. Not even the Nakhti emperor can afford the Necris process.
Anubis: But you could... is that what you mean?
Liandri officer: Exactly. You keep winning, we keep paying.
  • Arranged Marriage: Was about to get one with Selket before the events of the game, but refused.
  • Badass Boast:
    "For the legion!"
    "I fight for the Empire!"
  • Collision Damage: His "Energy Burst" adrenaline combo summons an energy eruption which damages nearby enemies.
  • Defector from Decadence: His reason to leave both his Arranged Marriage with Selket and the Ascension Rites in the past.
"Your power-mad family arranged our marriage. But I didn't care about that. I loved you. I left the Tournament to see what you wanted more: an emperor, or a husband."
  • Deflector Shields: Activated using his "Repulse" adrenaline combo.
  • Final Boss: Of Selket's Ladder. Also, he's one in the three-way matches of Brock's and Gorge's Ladders.
  • Heal Thyself: His "Heal" adrenaline combo restores half his health.
  • Multi-Slot Character: In addition to his Nakhti warrior appearance, he has another slot as a DLC character as "Merc Anubis", a.k.a. Imperial Guard Anubis, who's him with the same moves but a different costume.
  • My Greatest Failure:
"I've failed you once before, forefathers. Forgive me. But do not forgive their sacrilege. I will make you proud."
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Nice job killing your beloved for the sake of the Rites.
"I was here to stop her, not to win. And now I've lost everything."
  • Precision F-Strike: During the ending, to the Liandri officer, who is so impressed by it that he wants to use it in the press release.
    "Fuck your tournament. I'm through."
  • The Rival: Apophis. He's, after all, the one who got Selket's affections.
  • Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: A variant. Before the quarterfinals, he's offered to join Thunder Crash, thus avoiding all the posterior drama, something he rejects because of his own mission. He ends subverting this in the end.
  • Secret Character: Beat the Ascension Rites to unlock both him and his Ladder.
  • Status Buff: His "Warrior Spirit" adrenaline combo, combined with X-Ray Vision.

    Selket
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/selket_4012.jpg
"The crown isn't meant for cowards, and neither am I."

Voiced by: Stephanie Young

Tropes related to her:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Has her own ladder. The events of her ladder happens at the same time than the Ascension Rites, straight to the final match being against Anubis.
  • Back from the Dead: She's resurrected as a Necris by the Phayder corporation after Liandri pays them, as part of a deal Liandri struck with Anubis.
  • Badass Boast:
"They don't call me the Princess of Pain for nothing."
  • Battle Couple: With Apophis. In Selket's own ladder, they're partners for a match which in the Ascension Rites is the same match the commentator proclaims they're "punishing their opponents". They never face each other in Selket's ladder, even though it's implied near the end of said ladder that Apophis would let himself get killed in order to see Selket get ascended as queen.
Robot commentator: Of course, all eyes are on the central arena, where Selket and her partner Apophis are punishing their opponents. Let's get back to the action.
  • Blofeld Ploy: After berating a Liandri official for letting Anubis enter the ascension rites, she turns round and bitchslaps a random Nahkti warrior.
  • Defeat Means Playable: To unlock her, beat the Ascension Rites.
  • Deflector Shields: Activated using his "Repulse" adrenaline combo.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Due to the rules of the Ascension Rites disabling respawners for the last hit, the moment Anubis wins the match, it's over for her. In the next cutscene, she dies while being in Anubis's hands.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: One of her taunts is her saying "Distracted by my beauty?"
  • Final Boss: Of the Ascension Rites.
  • Heal Thyself: Her "Heal" adrenaline combo.
  • Late-Arrival Spoiler: Installed the DLC before completing the Ascension Rites? Because she has a separate DLC slot as Necris Selket.
  • Multi-Slot Character: In addition to her Nakhti warrior princess self, there's also "Necris Selket" as DLC character, who's her resurrected Necris self from the ending of the Ascension Rites, having Necris race moves instead of Nakhti race moves, in addition to her personal Flash ability.
  • Red Baron: "The Princess of Pain".
"They call me princess of pain for a reason."
  • Status Buff: Her "Warrior Spirit" adrenaline combo, combined with X-Ray Vision.
  • Stripperiffic: Probably intentional to her enemies, given her taunt line "Distracted by my beauty?"
  • Temporary Blindness: Her "Flash" adrenaline combo blinds everyone around her for a while.
  • This Cannot Be!:
"You cannot! This is not happening!"
"It's time to stop toying with you."
"I knew you would give me a challenge."
  • Trash Talk: Before the final match, she tries to make Anubis uncomfortable. And then, in the match itself:
    "Good night, sweet prince."
"You will bow before me, dog."
    "Look upon your new Empress!"
    "Not fast enough, jackal."
"Howl like the dog that you are!"
"Pray, Anubis, because this is the end."
"You cannot run from me, Anubis."

    Sobek
Sobek: Another crap patrol for the best of the Imperial Legion.
Anubis: I have friends in higher places.
Sobek: Yeah, the kind of friends who put scorpions in your boots.
Intro cutscene of the Ascension Rites

Voiced by: Brazos Mac Donald

Tropes related to him:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Has his own ladder.
  • Deadpan Snarker: After running from an ambush:
Sobek: That was fun. Bots make for good target practice.
Anubis: I look forward to thanking the Liandri personally.
    Sobek: Your funeral.
  • Deflector Shields: Activated using his "Repulse" adrenaline combo.
  • EMP: Name invoked by one of his attacks, which lets him detonate projectiles before they catch up with him.
  • Final Boss: Of Devastation's Ladder.
  • Heal Thyself: His "Heal" adrenaline combo restores half his health.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: He's 54, while Anubis is 29.
  • The Lancer: Serves as this to Anubis, using his own experience in order to guide him throughout the Tournament.
  • The Mentor: As a former Tournament combatant, he guides Anubis while he learns the ropes.
  • Older and Wiser: He had some experience in the Liandri Grand Tournament itself in the past.
  • Older Sidekick: He's 54 and Anubis's 29, has loads of experience both in the Tournament and in the Legion. Yet he's at Anubis's behest.
  • The Rival: Holds a grudge against Apophis because of... everything related to him.
  • Status Buff: His "Warrior Spirit" adrenaline combo, combined with X-Ray Vision.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: In the Ascension Rites, he doesn't appear again after "Upgrade".

    Apophis
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/apophis_5948.jpg

Voiced by: Jim Foronda

Selket's new boyfriend, he's the scion of a powerful royal family. He's idolized throughout the land for his sports talents, not to mention his jawdropping beauty. His good looks are so heavily insured that the underwriting company requires him to wear a full-face helmet in the tournament.

Tropes related to him:

  • Battle Couple: With Selket, though we never fight with or against both of them at the same time.
  • Berserk Button: Don't even try to say anything bad about Selket in his presence. Even more if your name is Anubis.
Anubis: Speaking of settling... how is Selket?
Apophis: (to the Guards) GET HIM! RIP HIM APART!
  • Deflector Shields: Activated using his "Repulse" adrenaline combo.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Towards Selket, who sees him as only an annoyance.
    "You'll never get her back!"
    "She loves *me* now!"
  • Downloadable Content: He only becomes playable after installing the Bonus Pack. You can unlock him as a bot by defeating him in the semifinals of the Ascension Rites.
  • The Dragon: To Selket.
  • EMP: Name invoked by one of his attacks, which lets him detonate projectiles before they catch up with him.
  • The Faceless: He's never seen without his helmet, though Selket's ladder proclaims he has "good looks".
  • Final Boss: Of Sobek's Ladder.
  • Heal Thyself: His "Heal" adrenaline combo restores half his health.
  • The Rival: Anubis. It starts with Selket's affections and goes downward from there.
  • Title Drop:
    "Unreal!"
  • Trash Talk: He most notably does this throughout the "A Moment's Reprieve" level.
"Does the Legion know you can't fight?"
"No more play, Anubis, now you die!"
    "So the jackal has teeth?"
  • Unknown Rival: Sobek wants to put him in his place. Apophis couldn't care less for him.

    Szalor and Torgr
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/szaltorg_5270.jpg
To Malcolm in the pre-match intro to "Lambs To The Slaughter".

Voiced by: Ric Spiegel (Szalor)

Years ago, the Torgr tribe, led by the brutal Torgr himself, murdered Szalor's clan, and those who were left were made slaves. Szalor tried to die fighting his captors and thus regain a small measure of honor, but he only impressed the Torgr with his ferocity. The Torgr, for this reason, entered Szalor into the tournament, hoping to watch an entertaining death. If he manages to win, however, he will be set free. Szalor's ladder takes him through the road for his survival.

Torgr, on the other hand, sees total galactic Skaarj dominance so clear, that for him is practically a fact, just waiting for the historic moments to come. He hopes that a grand Tournament victory (whih no Skaarj ever has achieved) will prove him worthy of being Consort to the Queen, and unifying the Skaarj and their slave races in his ultimate designs of intergalactic conquest. His ladder storymode takes him though the path to make his dreams of universal dominance a reality.

Tropes related to them:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Each of them have an own ladder.
  • Alien Blood: They bleed green.
  • Badass Boast:
Malcolm: Some would say it's unwise to meet a Skaarj warrior in a game they invented.
Szalor: It is always unwise to fight a Skaarj warrior.
  • The Chosen One: Szalor, in Raiden's ladder, is chosen by the Elder God to fight against the Outworld forces.
  • Cliffhanger: Since both ladders end at the Szalor vs. Torgr battle, there're two possible outcomes, which end with the rival being dead. Which one is the "true ending" is up to the player.
  • Collision Damage: Szalor's "Blade Burst" adrenaline combo damages nearby enemies.
  • Composite Character: Moreso than their Tournament counterparts. They can use the Warrior class bolt and hack thanks to their Razik being their weapon while still being able to carry weapons like the Trooper class. Also, the ability "Blade Shield" is exclusive to the Skaarj race, which is also another nod to the Trooper class and their ability to use a shield to reduce enemy damage.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Szalor. In his own ladder, which takes place during the Ascension Rites, he's set free, and in Raiden's ladder, he becomes The Chosen One and Earthrealm's champion. And if that isn't enough, Anubis and Brock's own ladders, which take place after the Ascension Rites, reveal that he's still around, as part of Thunder Crash.
  • Energy Absorption: Their "Blade Shield" adrenaline combo summons a shield made of blades which reduces explosive damage.
  • Final Boss: Of each other's Ladder. Szalor is also one in Raiden's Ladder.
  • Healing Factor: Their "Regeneration" adrenaline combo.
  • Irony: Szalor is a member of the Skaarj race, a race that sees humans and other creatures as unworthy of living. At the end of Raiden's ladder, though, he's The Chosen One.
  • Power Nullifier: Torgr's "Primal Scream" adrenaline combo prevents nearby enemies from using adrenaline combos.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guys
    "Fight with honor!"
  • Retool: From Lightning Bruiser into Mighty Glacier, for game balance reasons.
  • The Rival: Between each other.
  • Secret Character: Torgr. To unlock him, beat Szalor's ladder.
  • Unstoppable Rage and X-Ray Vision: Their "Predator" adrenaline combo .
  • Wolverine Claws: (with occasional Energy Balls) The player can use the Razik and Claws with both of them. If the beams hits another Skaarj, it's a Wasted shot.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Beating Szalor's ladder unlocks Torgr's, and the latter's final rung mirror Szalor, which means that Torgr wins the final match, which either means a) he's still a slave, or b) he's dead for good.

    Raptor and Devastation
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raptdeva_3750.jpg

Voiced by: Stephanie Young (Devastation)

Two Liandri robots, a household maid and a mining robot, modified for combat purposes. They are the most advanced models of their generation.

Tropes related to them:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Each of them have an own ladder. Devastation seeks to become the successor of Xan Kriegor.
  • Alien Blood: They have purple blood.
  • Cast from Hit Points: Their "Cannibalize" adrenaline combo allows them to construct ammunition from their own bodies, at the cost of losing health.
  • Enemy-Detecting Radar: Their "Radar" adrenaline combo activates their threat detection softwares.
  • Improvised Weapon: The Liandri Hammer, their melee weapon, a former mining tool. Also, both of them, after being a mining and household robot, respectively, turned into Killer Robots.
  • Mecha-Mooks: They were originally created for civilian purposes, but were modified for combat purposes to serve in the Rites.
  • More Dakka: Devastation's "Head Turret" adrenaline combo summons mounted automatic defenses which shoots to nearby enemies.
  • Secret Character: Devastation. To unlock her, reach the 14th. match in the Ascension Rites.
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: Invoked by Raptor's "Self Destruct" adrenaline combo.
  • Super-Powered Robot Meter Maids: Devastation.
Liandri advertisement announcer: She's so smart, and so durable, that we even entered her in the grand Tournament. Household chores will never be the same.

Guest characters

    Raiden
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raiden_7329.jpg
"I seek warriors, not cowards."
One of his taunts

Voiced by: Chase Ashbaker

The God of Thunder was cursed to see how the Outworld forces were invading the Earthrealm. Disgusted at this, he relinquishes his status as Elder God and beginds a quest to seek strong combatants in order to form an unified front against this invasion.

His ladder storymode has him testing all the Unreal champions and warriors in hopes to find suitable ones for his cause.
