Scarabia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scarabialogo.png
Founded on the meticulous planning of the Sorcerer of the Sands, the students of Scarabia are known for being highly resourceful. The students live by the dorm's motto, "Plan with deep anticipation".

The dorm and its members are twisted from Aladdin.

  • "Arabian Nights" Days: Par for the course with the dorm based on Aladdin.
  • Childhood Friends: Kalim and Jamil have known each other since childhood; Jamil's family has been serving Kalim's for generations. Mitigated, as it turns out Jamil was always resentful of Kalim and never truly considered him a friend.
  • Kudzu Plot: Relatively speaking, the Scarabia arc seems to be this as compared to the other chapters, as its conclusion gave more questions than answers to its players, especially upon release. None of the bigger issues in Chapter 4 had been addressed and resolved, and although this is realistic in that it's something where a solution can't be found immediately, it gives fans no end of frustration and worry.
    • This is justified, nevertheless, as the game encapsulates the stories of all the characters and cannot thereby allot that much attention to Jamil and Kalim. Perhaps their reconciliation will happen in due time, in some other story arc, if not in their own.
  • Meaningful Name: "Scarabia" is a mix of "Scarab" and "Arabia".
  • Poor Communication Kills: All the events of Chapter 4 could have been avoided (or at least, turned out far less worse than what happened) had Jamil only communicated with Kalim about how he truly felt - seeing as how Kalim genuinely cares about Jamil & seemingly wouldn't mind if Jamil got equal opportunities to show his potential. Of course, Jamil's upbringing doesn't really help with this, as he was raised to repress his true emotions & prioritize Kalim over anything, which lead to his growing resentment for the young heir over the years, even though Kalim's only fault in this entire matter was being blissfully unaware of Jamil's suffering.
    • Seems to be a recurring trope for these two characters, in particular, because come Chapter 5 and they haven't addressed Chapter 4's bigger issues - Jamil's resentment, the unfair social hierarchy, and Kalim's dwindling self-esteem - to one another yet. They're simply acting like everything's back to status quo, all while the tension between them after Chapter 4 is still painfully apparent.
  • Walking Spoiler: Just talking about the full backstories of both Kalim and Jamil can spoil the events of Chapter 4 (and to lesser extent; Chapter 5), considering the sheer volume of spoiler tags in their folder compared to those of previously-featured dorms.

    Kalim Al-Asim
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scarabia_chara_kalim_detail_a.png
Voiced by: Kazuki Furuta, Mari Uchiyama (child)
Twisted from: The Sultan
Grade: Second year

The dorm leader of Scarabia. He hails from a wealthy family and is a childhood friend of Jamil.

  • Always Someone Better: He's always viewed Jamil as this, but felt even moreso when it's revealed that nothing he's ever accomplished was because of his own hard work, but rather because of Jamil's Deliberate Under-Performance. His insecurity regarding this is revealed in Chapter 5.
Kalim: The only way I've ever won anything is because Jamil let me win... I'm sure. That frustrates me. It frustrates me so much.
  • Backstory Horror: Seeing how happy and optimistic Kalim is, it is really hard to imagine him having been poisoned and kidnapped in his early childhood without it having traumatized him in some way. Due to how nonchalant he seems about it, it is implied that it happened very often.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Is this towards Ortho Shroud, as depicted in his Sportswear R card.
  • Big Damn Reunion: More like The Glomp. Kalim tackles Jamil down while shouting for him excitedly once they're reunited in the final chapters of Book 6, the contrast of the heartwarming background music and the loud noise that was made when they fell to the ground being peak comedy.
  • Brutal Honesty: One of Kalim's most prominent traits is his tendency to always speak what's on his mind, regardless of whether his audience wants to hear the truth or not. Oftentimes he comes off as Innocently Insensitive, other times this trait makes him an Honest Advisor.
  • Character Development: He becomes more considerate of others as the main story plods on, and he strives to exert more effort in order to make up for all the times he "achieved" something despite not deserving it. He is also more likely to take action when he notices something is wrong, unlike before when it's implied he knew about Jamil's hardships but didn't do anything about it until it was too late.
  • Chekhov's Skill: According to his profile, Kalim has a talent for detecting poison. Later in Chapter 5, he reveals that he learned to detect poison for not just protecting himself but also to give the culprit their chance to confess their crime of their own volition. This later comes into play when Kalim exposes Vil's attempt to sabotage Neige's performance in VDC through recognizing the apple juice to be cursed.
  • Comically Missing the Point: This exchange with Vil is pretty much self-explanatory.
Vil: I will be confiscating every single sugary snack and carbonated drinks that you brought!
Kalim: Why? It doesn’t have poison!
Vil: Is poison the only thing that’s in your mind? That’s beyond the point!
  • Companion Cube: Kalim and his magic carpet; though it's played with because Carpet is sentient.
  • Demonic Possession: During the second Halloween event, Endless Halloween Night. Kalim is one of the many students kidnapped and taken over by ghosts. His ghost in particular makes him act like an arrogant tyrant.
  • The Ditz: He can be quite oblivious to his surroundings at times. According to Ruggie, both he and Silver are grouped together as 'madfree space' in Class 2-A due to how easily they get on their classmates' nerves for this trait. Hilariously enough, in Twst's EN server, Kalim and Silver are referred to as the "Facepalm Brigade."
  • Does Not Like Spam: Kalim's least favorite food is curry, due to a past incident where Jamil was poisoned by a curry dish intended for him and went into a coma for two weeks. It is also heavily implied that as a result of the incident, curry became his Trauma Button.
  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: He becomes a merciless dictator when under Jamil's hypnosis, forcing his dorm residents to stay in school over winter break and train until they collapse.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: When Jamil betrayed him.
Kalim: You wouldn’t do something like control me or chase me out, right…? Jamil, you were… You said that you’ll never betray me, didn’t you? We're best friends, aren't we?!
  • Fiction 500: "Al'Ab Nariya of the Scalding Sands" reveals that the Asim family is loaded. From owning multiple cars, having what is essentially a limo, having a Big Fancy House, the Asim family being one of the pioneer merchant families that brought the success of the city they live in...
  • Fire/Water Juxtaposition: His and Jamil's Dorm SSR cards are this, the former being null/water and the latter being null/fire. Bonus points because they have their Duo Magic with each other.
    • Additionally, throughout the story, Kalim is shown to be more susceptible to using water magic, while Jamil tends to use fire.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Zig-zagged. Kalim's unique magic, "Oasis Maker", might seem mundane in comparison to most other unique magic. However, in the Land of Hot Sands where water is scarce, it stands out a lot and is considered a blessing. Azul even praises it in Chapter 4 and talks about how Kalim could potentially make money out of it, along with how it complements the merfolk of Octavinelle.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite being seemingly less bright and often dependent on Jamil, Kalim is still the next-in-line head of the Asim family and would have the education to match. In his dorm personal story, he gets to show some moments of resourcefulness when he asks Silver to find some white birds to use for the Parade to show off for Crowley when the original birds meant for it escaped. In Chapter 6, Leona mentions to Jamil that what Kalim has that Jamil doesn't is a sense of money as Kalim, due to his upbringing and education as the next head of the Asim merchant family, would also be thinking and proceeding forward with some of his decisions in a way a merchant would.
  • Honest Advisor: Although it passes the check for Innocently Insensitive more often than not, Kalim's Brutal Honesty plays a huge role in reaffirming Deuce's confidence during Chapter 5, as his straightforwardness & unclouded judgment served as the final push toward Deuce's character development.
Kalim: Say, Deuce… Maybe it’s because you keep overthinking that you can’t come up with anything good. You call yourself an idiot, so why are you trying so hard to think and complicate things? When I look at you, it’s like watching someone try to write with their non-dominant hand and then hearing them complain about why their handwriting looks so ugly. It’s like you’re setting yourself up for failure when you keep doing things you know you can’t do. You won’t be able to find your good qualities if you keep focusing on what you’re bad at.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Played with. Yes, he really is someone who trusts the people around him easily, but surprisingly, he also has his moments when he notices more than he should. The only thing that doesn't make him an Excellent Judge of Character is that he never uses this observed info to distrust others, and rarely ever acts upon his gut feeling. To note some examples:
    • In Trey's Sportswear R personal story, he notices that Trey and Riddle seem to have some "bad blood" between them.
    • In Chapter 4 (before the Hidden Disdain Reveal), he mentions that he "wishes Jamil could live a little more freely", implying that he did know something about Jamil's situation, in contrary to what was believed. But he still saw Jamil as a friend for so long that he didn't want to consider the possibility that Jamil would betray him until said betrayal got thrown right at his face.
    • In Chapter 5, he notices that Vil's expression after RSA's rehearsal was similar to Jamil's before he overblotted, and he gets a foreboding feeling from it. Unlike in previous examples, however, he does something about this, and was thus able to stop Rook from drinking Vil's poison.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Has a lot of moments like this, the most recent ones being when he said Ace & Deuce's dance practice was terrible in Chapter 5, and when he said he'd never experienced such bad living conditions until he stayed at Ramshackle Dorm. Of course, he means well despite this—his mouth simply doesn't have a filter.
    • This quality of his is also what led to him being previously listed under the Innocent Bigot trope. In the Scary Monsters 2020 event, some visitors mistook Ruggie, a beastman, to be wearing a werewolf costume. Ruggie tried to explain that those are two completely different things, but Kalim was quick to interject that they're "similar" anyway & that it'd be a good idea to take a photo together. His words had no racist intentions, and he didn't side with the visitors on their claim that Ruggie was wearing a costume either—he just genuinely wanted Ruggie to take a photo together with them. Though, with how he worded it, his intentions could be easily misunderstood.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Floyd calls him "Sea Otter" note.
    • Rook calls him "Roi d'or".
  • Keet: Very cheerful and friendly, to the point of being described as naive.
  • Light 'em Up: Uses light magic for his non-elemental attacks making him a part of the 'light magic trio' with Rook and Silver.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Implied to be this, especially if you consider his attachment to Jamil and his belief that Jamil's the only person who would never betray him. And as it was heartbreakingly revealed in Chapter 4, Jamil did in fact betray Kalim.
    • Additionally, in Kalim's Labcoat SR personal story, it was revealed that even members of Kalim's own family have attempted to bring harm onto him...
    • Moreover, in Kalim's 2021 birthday interview, he says that the magic carpet is his one and only best friend. That's pretty sad, once you give it some thought.
  • Magic Carpet: He has one, as seen in Chapter 4. It's a replica of the original magic carpet and is considered an important family heirloom to the Asims.
  • Making a Splash / Master of Illusion: Kalim's unique magic, 'Oasis Maker', allows him to create sprays of water which also create optical illusions to an extent. His SSR card story has him substitute the missing seven coloured parrots he brought as part of a parade with white birds borrowed from Silver, which were then given a rainbow colour through Oasis Maker's water droplets.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: His P.E. uniform card's personal story reveals that he has many younger siblings. In Chapter 4, he mentions that he has around thirty to forty.
  • Meaningful Name: Possibly. "Kalim" is an Arabic name meaning "speaker", which fits as Kalim is quite the talkative individual and was raised to be the dominant half of himself and the more confidential Jamil before their Character Development. "Asim" also translates to "protector/savior", highlighting Kalim's role in helping to save Scarabia from Jamil's tyrannical reign and overblot as well as his family's role in keeping up the Land of Scalding Sands.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: Kalim gets these at the end of Chapter 3, and it's heavily implied that Jamil is responsible, just like how Jafar hypnotized the Sultan.
  • Mood-Swinger: In Chapter 4, Yuu and Grim can't make heads or tails of his constant shifts between kind, friendly Kalim and uncaring dictator Kalim. It's eventually revealed to be caused by Jamil's hypnosis, the kind, friendly personality being the real one.
  • Morality Pet: Somewhat played with, but he is this for Jamil. This is especially exemplified in Chapter 5, when Jamil is revealed to have no qualms over Neige potentially dying at Vil's hands, only helping the cast out because Kalim got involved.
    • However, it can be argued that he only did it for the sake of their master/servant relationship. Kalim dying could cause a major dent in the Vipers' reputation as servants, after all.
    • And then again, considering how severe Jamil's actions in the previous arc was, him making the choice to save Kalim (and the others) when he could've just left them to die sings true towards this trope.
    • Played straight in the Endless Halloween Night event, where Jamil gets increasingly wild in his pursuits to find Kalim (and the other kidnapped students) in the Ghost World, even resorting to ambushing and stealing from ghosts, as well as tricking Silver just so they could find Kalim faster. Silver is understandably exasperated by this.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Kalim blames himself for the events that led to Jamil being jealous of him and the resulting Overblot.
  • Nice Guy: Is overtly nice and friendly to a fault. Yuu regards him as a refreshing dorm leader when they are properly acquainted with Kalim in Chapter 4 due to this, especially considering the kind of people the previous three dorm leaders were like when Yuu met them.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Jamil is this for Kalim. In fact, the most OOC moments we ever get of him happen whenever Jamil is put in danger. Besides, just the fact alone that Kalim considers Jamil as the only exception in a world that's constantly out to get him speaks so much.
    • Jamil taste-testing dishes in the past led to him getting poisoned by curry meant for Kalim. This traumatized Kalim so much that he couldn't stomach curry ever again, even going as far as banning it during banquets despite it still being Jamil's favorite dish.
Kalim: I had never seen Jamil look so lifeless...
    • Kalim's utter horror and despair when Jamil gets abducted right in front of him makes so much more sense when you realize he knows just how scary an experience that can be, as someone who's gone through many kidnappings. It takes Rook having to remind Kalim of his responsibilities as dorm leader that Kalim calms down from his panic.
    • Jade tried to insinuate that perhaps Jamil and the others were dead. Cue Kalim uncharacteristically telling him to not say such things, his voice calm but still obviously furious.
    • Played straight in Silver's School Uniform R vignette wherein Kalim admits that he wouldn't take it well if Jamil told him they couldn't go to school together anymore. (Which is just sad because Jamil wound up telling him something far worse than that.)
Kalim: If Jamil told me that, I'd probably have a meltdown.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: Kalim's unconditional trust in and support of Jamil comes across as this to Jamil himself. Jamil has long resented and envied Kalim for being the reason why he isn't allowed to aim higher for most of his life, but Kalim is so supportive and trusts him so much that he finds himself incapable of fully hating Kalim.
  • Oblivious Mockery: When Jamil suspects Sebek, who got lost in Scarabia, to be an assassin, Kalim points out how ridiculous that would be. He mentions that no assassin would act so obviously...and somehow manages to slip in an insult as he does so.
Kalim: What? Normally you try to blend in if you're an assassin, not stand around in plain sight with hair louder than one of Crowley's whipcracks.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • He's usually cheerful and enjoys partying, but when he gets serious with Mind-Control Eyes, something's terribly wrong. This is why Octavinelle gets involved when they learn about the situation in Scarabia from Yuu, as the Kalim they know is friendly, cheerful, and nice.
    • Likewise, when he figures out that Vil was planning to poison Neige in chapter 5, he drops his usual demeanor and calls him out on it.
    • Happens again in Chapter 6, when he insists to catch up to the Charons who abducted Jamil, completely ignoring the fact that the first years were injured & passed out. Thankfully, Rook snaps him out of it.
    • When Jade brings up the possibility that the captured overblot victims are now dead, Kalim angrily chides him for even thinking of such a horrid thought. The fact that he isn't looking at the bright side of things like he usually does only proves the gravity of the situation.
  • Power of Trust: A rare, negative example. Considering how Kalim was able to counter Jade's Unique Magic (something that is a little similar to Snake Whisper), it's implied that this is the only reason why Jamil was able to manipulate him.
  • Protectorate: To Jamil. Justified, as the Vipers are sworn to servitude towards the Asims, and Kalim is often a target of abductions and assassinations.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Kalim is considered a cool dorm leader who helps his dorm members adjust however they can. The fact that Kalim started changing from this right at the drop of a hat raises alarms with people who actually know him, such as Azul, Jade and Floyd.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Averted, as Kalim is quite possibly the friendliest student at Night Raven, unless being under the influence of Jamil's hypnosis counts.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Played with. As the 4koma anthology manga and his SR lab coat story show, he tends to be a bit impulsive with his spending. However, that doesn't seem to be the case when he witnesses other people spending money lavishly, as he seems quite concerned when Malleus goes on a spending spree in the Al'ab Nariya event.
    • Subverted entirely by Leona's assessment of his character, as Leona noticed that one of Kalim's greatest strengths is that he has money and knows how to use it, even if it's from instinct alone. Jamil is baffled by this, at first, but soon realizes what he meant after he recalls Kalim donating his share of Vil's money to Ramshackle Dorm.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Money!: Not Kalim himself but his family. It's all but explicitly stated that the reason Kalim got into Night Raven College and became Scarabia's dorm head was because Crowley made a deal with the Asim family that they would provide vast financial funding in exchange for the privileges.
  • Selfless Wish: In the Wish Upon A Star event, his wish was for everyone to be happy.
  • Sheltered Aristocrat: He is the heir to one of Scalding Sands' wealthiest families, and he was home-schooled prior to enrolling at NRC. Moreover, he grew up being coddled by everyone around him, making him turn out as an Innocently Insensitive Spoiled Brat despite meaning well. He gets better though.
  • Significant White Hair, Dark Skin: Has striking white hair and a tan complexion, and he's the current housewarden of Scarabia as well as the heir to a highly influential family.
  • Spoiled Brat: This and Spoiled Sweet simultaneously. Kalim is an extremely rich heir who is prone to impulsive decisions, disregarding warnings against such decisions, not grasping onto certain lessons, and bouts of Innocently Insensitive and Oblivious Guilt Slinging. On the other hand, Kalim doesn't have a mean bone in his body, will be the first to help someone financially and do whatever it takes to give his dorm members or companions a good time.
  • Stepford Smiler: For all his cheer, he actually has very low self-esteem, being all too aware of just how much more capable Jamil is and how dependent he is on him.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: Once he noticed that Vil was on the verge of snapping and potentially overblotting, Kalim attempted to pacify and calm him down. However, Vil was to far gone and overblotted anyway.
  • The Only One I Trust: Kalim trusted that Jamil would be the sole person in the world who would never betray him. Keep mind of the word '''trusted'''.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: He, Cater, and Lilia are the only members of the light music club, but they don't actually do anything music-related and just use the club room as a place to hang out and pass the time. Cater's Birthday Personal Story shed some light to this. According to Cater, the member's own personal preferences with music clashed (Kalim wanting to perform his home's music and Lilia preferring to perform a metal genre song) so neither of them can get anything much done.
  • The Pollyanna: Is overly optimistic in spite of his betrayal-laden past. In Stage in Playful Land, this makes Kalim technically immune to Fellow's Unique Magic as Kalim is already an optimistic person to begin with.
  • The Rival: He wants to be this to Jamil as part of them starting over as equals after Jamil Overblots, which Jamil accepts despite rejecting Kalim's friendship.
  • The Scapegoat: What he turned out to be as the object of Jamil's hatred. Jamil actually didn't hate just him; he hated everyone else as well. It was just easier to fixate all the blame on one person.
  • Token Good Teammate: Nearly every other dorm head so far has been some degree of corrupt, but Kalim's an unrelenting Nice Guy. His few moments of cruelty are caused by Jamil's mind-controlling magic.
  • Training from Hell: Forces his dorm members to stay in school over winter break and train for hours every day as part of Jamil's plot to sow dissension among their boarders and eventually have Kalim declared unfit to lead.
  • Trauma Button: It is heavily implied to be the reason, why curry is listed as his least favorite food, as he once witnessed the horrific effects of Jamil being nearly poisoned to death after taste-testing the curry, intended for Kalim himself (not helped by the fact that his curry was the only one poisoned among all the other dishes).
  • Turn the Other Cheek: Early in the Pomefiore chapter, Jamil eavesdropped on Kalim talking with the other students as to why he still let Jamil keep the position of the Vice Dorm leader of Scarabia in spite of what recently transpired. Kalim had all the reasons to be angry at Jamil for his betrayal, but he is aware that he is also at fault for being responsible for why Jamil overblotted in the first place, pointing out that Jamil still helped others, him included in spite of his own contempt for Kalim, and recall that for all his seventeen years of life, Jamil never attempted to harm him until the Winter Holidays.
  • Uncle Pennybags: Comes from a family so rich that he doesn't actually realize just how rich he is. He's perhaps the nicest and most optimistic student at Night Raven College, which Yuu and Grim point out on several occasions. Even the other students make note of how nice he is. Kalim doesn't hesitate to use his wealth on parties, food, and music—all so everyone can have a fun time.
  • Unreliable Narrator: With the way Kalim described his history with Jamil, you'd think that they were inseparable back when they were still children—Al'Ab Nariya josses this somewhat, though, as Jamil actually had a life beyond his responsibilities as a servant of the Asims, and was implied to not have cherished the time he spent with Kalim as much as the young heir did. Moreover, Kalim also tends to be very vague when describing his experiences, such as when he referred to past poisoning incidents as merely "having a stomachache".

    Jamil Viper
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/scarabia_chara_jamil_detail_a.png
Voiced by: Kaname Futaba, Tamaki Orie (child)
Twisted from: Jafar
Grade: Second year

The vice dorm leader of Scarabia. He and his family have served the Al-Asim family for generations and he has grown up alongside Kalim.

  • The Ace: In one of his SR versions' personal stories, Azul notes that Jamil's performance is particularly noteworthy in most, if not all academic fields, whether it's practical lessons, written lessons or physical education. Jamil himself seems to deny this, however, as he prefers to stay modest without being too exposed in the spotlight. Chapter 4 reveals that he can do better, but is prevented by the people around him from even trying to be better for most of his life.
  • Always Second Best: He's been forced to invoke this since childhood, never being allowed to outdo Kalim in any area due to their difference in social status.
  • Always Someone Better: Is this to Kalim, though it's inadvertently revealed that he views Kalim as this as well, having mentioned to Vil that he knows how it feels like to meet someone you just know you can't beat. It's implied that he was referring to the charismatic,Reasonable Authority Figure Kalim serves as at Scarabia, because the positive influence Kalim has on his dorm members isn't something Jamil can easily replicate unless he resorts to underhanded means. As Leona points out, Riddle, Azul, and Kalim also have better leadership skills than Jamil had ever developed, as Jamil had unwittingly hindered his own potential via his closed mindset.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Goes through one in Kalim's Dorm SSR personal story, berating Kalim for being reckless and falling off of his magic carpet. Of course, Kalim just waves this off, much to Jamil's exasperation.
    • It's still unknown just how much of this worry is genuine or merely a sense of obligation, though...
  • Animal Motifs: Snakes, as seen in his name and his unique magic "Snake Whisper". His hair even turns into red-eyed snakes in his overblot form.
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: His SSR card story reveals he and his younger sister used to bicker a lot whenever the latter told Jamil his cooking looks plain.
  • The Atoner: Chapter 5 reveals that in order to make up for the stunt he pulled during Chapter 4, he's decided to remain loyal in servitude towards Kalim, this time willingly.
Jamil: Until Kalim himself dismisses me, I'll remain a faithful servant by his side...and I'll make sure everyone knows just how competent I can be.
  • Badass in Distress: He and all the other overblot victims are captured by S.T.Y.X. in the Ignihyde arc.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: He is not pleased with having to put up with Kalim's whims all the time.
  • Big Brother Instinct: While they bicker frequently enough, Jamil cares and is protective of his sister Najma, as shown in "Land of Scalding Sands Al'aleab Naria".
  • Big Damn Heroes: Jamil saves Kalim, Rook, Grim and Yuu just in time with Kalim's magic carpet before being exposed to poison mist from an overblot Vil's Unique Magic.
  • Big Damn Reunion: More like The Glomp. Kalim tackles Jamil down while shouting for him excitedly once they're reunited in the final chapters of Book 6, the contrast of the heartwarming background music and the loud noise that was made when they fell to the ground being peak comedy.
  • Bodyguard Betrayal: He does this to Kalim.
  • The Caretaker: Is this to Kalim even after his overblot.
  • Character Development: He doesn't let the social hierarchy stop him from showing his potential anymore, and while he's still as morally ambiguous as ever, he's definitely on the good side this time around.
    • Moreover, as of the end of Chapter 6, Jamil is shown to be more open to accepting help from Kalim and has grown to be less contemptuous towards him, even admitting at one point that he can't believe he's relieved to see Kalim's face again. Leona's advice about changing his mindset and focusing on himself rather than others seems to be working.
  • Chessmaster Sidekick: Played with, as Jamil had always wanted to prove he was better than Kalim, but couldn't. Come Chapter 4, however, we can see that he did make an attempt to oust him & even almost succeeded.
    • After his overblot, he decides to stay by Kalim's side as a "faithful servant"—though unlike before, he doesn't let their different social statuses stop him from showing his potential anymore.
  • Con Man: In his Yasamina Silk SSR personal story, he tricks a seller (who was also trying to trick him) into giving him an item that was worth more than what he bargained for.
Jamil, to Trey: I told you that this place has a lot of shrewd people, right? I'm one of them.
  • Deconstructed Character Archetype: Of the Hyper-Competent Sidekick. His hypercompetence is directed solely at his job and his superior abilities have been suppressed all his life, leading him to bitterly resent his sidekick role.
  • Deliberate Under-Performance: Jamil makes sure to always get average scores so as to never outperform Kalim, and goes as far as throwing the slim majority of games he could easily win in order to downplay his abilities and keep his opponents happy. He does it so consistently that Azul begins to suspect the truth.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Probably one of the best ones in the entire Twst cast.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Dates. This is connected to why Jamil himself is afraid of bugs.
  • Driven by Envy: Chapter 4 is built entirely on his scheme to replace Kalim as dorm leader due to his envy and resentment that Kalim got the position when Jamil was objectively the better fit.
  • Double Take: Does this in his Ceremonial Robes SR, when he thinks he's hallucinating an image of Kalim (because he's too tired after escorting Sebek) only for him to realize later that that was indeed Kalim, and that the Scarabia freshmen were left alone on their first day at NRC. Cue the Only Sane Man trope.
  • Easily Forgiven: For all his plans to get Kalim ousted from being Scarabia's dorm leader, all he gets from Kalim is a request to start over again as equals in their friendship. Jamil accepts being equals, but not friendship.
  • Evil Gloating: Decides to do this in front of a "hypnotized" Azul in Chapter 4 of the main story, which turns out to be his undoing as Jade and company were nearby listening.
  • Fascinating Eyebrow: He has this whenever he sports his smug/confident expression.
  • Fatal Flaw: Envy. Being raised as the son of a servant's family, he was never allowed to fully show his potential and was always held back by his status, even though he's always been more talented in every aspect compared to Kalim. Even if Kalim claims they were childhood friends, Jamil has always resented Kalim's presence and wished to take over his position as the dorm leader—simply to prove that he has always been the superior one between the two.
  • Feeling Oppressed by Their Existence: Kalim being Innocently Insensitive aside, he's always thought of Jamil as a friend & never realized just how big of a role he played in the latter's life. Despite this, Jamil blames Kalim for being the reason why he never got to freely show his potential, as he always had to downplay his abilities for Kalim's sake.
    • Of course, there was that time when Jamil got poisoned in Kalim's place...but strangely enough, Jamil never mentions this & doesn't seem to hold it against Kalim. If anything, Kalim's the only one who is still affected by what happened.
    • Jamil's bias towards his own suffering also makes it difficult for him to look at Kalim objectively, and as such, the Scarabia duo still haven't fully reconciled despite still hanging around each other.
  • Fire/Water Juxtaposition: His and Kalim's Dorm SSR cards are this, the former being null/fire and the latter being null/water. Bonus points because they have their Duo Magic with each other.
    • Additionally, throughout the story, Kalim is shown to be more susceptible to using water magic, while Jamil tends to use fire.
  • Friendship Denial: Jamil denies being friends with literally anyone in the cast sans Yuu. He is most notable for being this way towards Kalim, however, and it's more or less become a Running Gag in the story.
    • He is also vehemently against being associated with Azul, much to the latter's dismay.
    • Does this again in the Al'ab Nariya event, where he denies being friends with Malleus, Cater, and Trey, instead addressing them as either his upperclassmen or "his master's friends."
  • Genre Savvy: After all of the school's previous experiences with Overblot victims (including himself) and his own experiences with the dorm leader, Jamil immediately knows that Kalim's confrontation with Vil is going to end in the latter Overblotting, so he evacuates everyone from the coliseum ahead of time.
  • Gorgeous Gorgon: His Overblot form takes the whole snake theme to the next level, giving him snakes as his hair.
  • Got Volunteered: In Azul's R Gym Uniform personal story, Vargas assigns Jamil to teach Azul how to properly fly on a broom despite Jamil's objections. Considering who Azul is…
  • Hates Everyone Equally: Downplayed because he rarely expresses it and justified due to his upbringing. Jamil admits in Chapter 6 that, in truth, Kalim wasn't the only one he held in contempt. He hated everyone, believing himself to be above them when his insecurities actually made him think it was the other way around, and self-justifying that if he had the chance, he could one day show them he's way better than them. It's just that he was waiting for the right moment... Leona calls him out on this prior to his admission and tells him that it's this mindset that hinders his own potential; Jamil focuses way too much on criticizing others rather than his own self, thereby making him immensely capable all alone but otherwise weak when it comes to working with others, because he always put himself on a pedestal above them and believed that he had to show just how better he is if he had the opportunity to. This is why Jamil could never become a better leader than Kalim—he has no leadership skills whatsoever.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: Chapter 4 reveals that Jamil has never considered Kalim as a friend and in fact blames him for being the reason why he was never able to show his true potential.
Jamil: Ever since I can remember, that carefree, positive, and foolish attitude of yours… I'VE ALWAYS HATED IT! You keep doing what you want without thinking of what I have to do for you! I’ve always hated seeing your smile. I’M SO SICK OF IT! I won’t sugarcoat anything anymore. I’ve always, ALWAYS wished that you were gone.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Jamil was well on his way to ousting Kalim and would have succeeded if he hadn't decided to involve Yuu and Grim on the spur of the moment, wanting to make use of their perceived connection with Crowley.
  • Hyper-Competent Sidekick: As Kalim's servant and vice dorm leader, he's exceedingly capable, handling everything from Kalim's dorm leader duties to the minutiae of Kalim's daily life. Becomes a Deconstructed Character Archetype, as Jamil resented being raised specifically to become this as well as having to restrain natural talent to not surpass Kalim, and eventually came to resent Kalim himself while being painfully aware that he could do even better if he weren't obligated to take on the role of a servant.
  • Idiot Ball: Decides to disclose his entire evil plan to unseat Kalim as the dorm leader to a hypnotized Azul despite the fact that he should have been aware that Jade and company, who had been following Azul around the entire time, would be nearby listening. Jamil had been suspicious of them since their arrival but slips up for no other reason than to progress the plot.
  • In-Series Nickname:
    • Floyd calls him "Sea Snake" note.
    • Rook calls him "Monsieur Multi".
  • Inner Monologue: Played for Laughs for the most part, he has a habit of pulling one of these whenever he's scheming something, or when he gets exasperated by Kalim's antics, or when he's judging-slash-badmouthing other people inside his mind, or when he's anxious. ...Needless to say, he tends to have internal monologues a lot.
  • Irony: Jamil's favorite food is curry… in spite of the fact that he was almost killed taste-testing one for Kalim.
  • Jack of All Trades: He invokes this despite his true abilities, deliberately achieving average results across the board so he'll never outperform Kalim.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: By all accounts Jamil did have a real point that the constant banquets and Kalim's carefree way of handling problems were causing Scarabia to tank to the point that it was scoring the lowest out of all the dormitories and that action needed to be taken if the dorm wanted to redeem itself. Unfortunately, Jamil saw this as an opportunity to try striking down Kalim instead of genuinely trying to rebuild Scarabia's image.
  • Kill It with Fire: Jamil's first instinct whenever he encounters a bug. He even once fully intended to burn Sam's Mystery Shop to the ground when bugs gathered there because of the Magicam Monsters' littering, and as a child, he also burned down numerous stalls at the marketplace when he haphazardly used fire magic—all in an attempt to kill a bug he mistook for a palm date...and nearly swallowed.
  • Legacy of Service: The Viper family has served the Asims for generations.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: For Kalim. In fact, the most OOC moments we ever get of him happen whenever Jamil is put in danger. Besides, just the fact alone that Kalim considers Jamil as the only exception in a world that's constantly out to get him speaks so much.
  • Luminescent Blush: Both the Groovys for his Ceremonial Robes SR and 2020 Birthday SSR have this.
  • Mind Manipulation: His unique magic, 'Snake Whisper', lets him mentally control his targets, similar to Jafar's hypnosis of the Sultan.
  • "No. Just… No" Reaction: Jamil always vehemently declines whenever Azul offers him a hand at friendship or business.
Jamil: I'd rather stay in Scarabia than be friends with the likes of you.
  • Only Sane Man: He's responsible for keeping Kalim in line. However, post Chapter 4, this trope gets deconstructed as Jamil is so used to be the one keeping Kalim in line that he has a hard time accepting that Kalim can actually change for the better and be independent from him. And it took Leona calling him out in Chapter 6 for him to slowly come to terms that both of them can change and that Jamil can now prioritize his own person than to cater fully to others.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: In his Overblot form.
  • Repression Never Ends Well: A major precedent of his overblot was how his parents practically forced Jamil to hide his desire to show he's better than Kalim, drilling the notion that "a servant must never outdo his master" into his mind. As a result, Jamil always unconsciously denies any praise he gets, Deliberate Underperformance becomes akin to breathing for him, and his grudge for Kalim only grew over the years. Said grudge eventually led to the events that transpired in Chapter 4.
    • Heartbreakingly enough, if Jamil had simply told Kalim how he really felt—how suffocated he was, how even he wanted to be acknowledged for his skills—Kalim would definitely have insisted for Jamil to do what he wanted regardless of the social hierarchy. But because Jamil was raised to repress his own emotions & prioritize Kalim above anything else, the thought of opening up to the person who genuinely cherished him never crossed his mind.
  • Running Gag: Jamil covering Kalim's mouth to stop him from saying something happens very often throughout the game, mostly Played for Laughs or to hint at a foreshadowing.
    • Also, Kalim saying that he's Jamil's friend and Jamil quickly denying it.
    • Also also, Jamil having internal monologues. He LITERALLY does this the most often among the Twisted Wonderland cast.
    • Jamil's fear of bugs being exploited or shown in one way or another.
  • Safety Freak: Just look at this note he left for Kalim on how to cook shawarma:
"Once the surface is cooked through, turn the spit and shear the cooked meat using scissors. ('NOTE: BEWARE OF FIRE!)''
  • School Forced Us Together: Jamil had high hopes when he enrolled in NRC, seeing this as a new chance to be seen as more than just a servant of the Asims. But guess who transferred in two months later?
  • Sarcastic Devotee: He snarks at Kalim a lot even after swearing loyalty to him.
  • Supreme Chef: It is said that his cooking skills are nothing to scoff at, with other characters praising him for it. It is implied it is also a skill he's proud of, as he and his sister would quarrel a lot whenever she commented that the food he prepared looked plain.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: In Endless Halloween Night, Jamil is forced (by Silver, no less) to "show how much he cares about Kalim" in order to convince the original him to come back, much to Jamil's chagrin. This is eventually Played for Laughs, because even though he did manage to say something so sincere it made the ghost temporarily shut up, the ghost ended up leaving for a reason irrelevant to the point he tried to deliver.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • At the climax of Chapter 4, he hurls this towards Kalim, claiming that he has never liked him as a friend and that he's never been allowed to prove himself due to their unequal social standing. After recovering from Overblot, he does this once more with Brutal Honesty, criticizing Kalim's clumsiness and spoiled attitude.
    • Is on the receiving end of this in Chapter 6, where Leona calls out on Jamil's Deliberate Underperformance and even after overblotting, he still kept up at it and rightfully points out that Jamil is still doing it because he actually viewed others in contempt and believed that he could do better and show off his abilities when he gets the chance; meanwhile, both Riddle and Azul, even Kalim, had more going for them as they had the drive and charisma befitting of their position while Jamil continued to lament how he isn't able to show off his abilities and continue to hide in the shadows, and hence hindered himself and is now lacking the qualities to be a Dorm leader as a result. Jamil doesn't take it well and snaps.
  • The Reliable One: In "Scary Monsters", Trein mentions that he isn't worried about Scarabia causing trouble, because if mayhem were to occur, he could trust Jamil to handle it. Unfortunately, the constant littering from the Magicam Monsters attracted bugs, and Jamil is too incapacitated by his fear of insects to be able to handle it fully.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Azul faked falling victim to his Unique Magic. Jade filmed a video of him blurting out his evil plans and spread it live among the Scarabia dorm students. He is chastized for tricking everyone into believing he was the good guy. And then...Kalim arrives, begging Jamil to say that everyone was lying & that he didn't actually betray him. Jamil just SNAPS, delivers a "The Reason You Suck" Speech & Hidden Disdain Reveal, uses Snake Whisper on all his dormmates, and proceeds to fall into overblot. Damn.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: He's exceedingly capable and managed all the dorm leader duties even when Kalim was still well-liked by their boarders, earning him the respect and admiration of all his dorm members. This plays into his scheme of discrediting Kalim, manipulating him into becoming a tyrant and making himself look fair and benevolent in comparison.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: A class conversation you can unlock by taking part in many lessons with him reveals that Jamil is afraid of bugs. In "Scary Monsters", Kalim revealed that this fear started because Jamil once ate palm dates that had a bug in it and had been terrified since. In "Al'ab Al Nariya", it's revealed that ever since the incident, he can't eat palm dates without being reminded of the memory.
