Akatsuki as a whole

    Akatsuki
  • Adaptational Wimp: Played With. While their overall strength is mostly left intact and they even expand their membership, they fail every single attempt to catch a jinchūriki, as pointed out by Naruto. This probably factors into Pain's decision to shift towards a single coordinated assault.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Compared to the Well-Intentioned Extremist-leadership of Akatsuki, En Oyashiro is a greedy slaver and human trafficker. It goes so far that his freed slaves join Akatsuki voluntarily.

Leadership and Founding Members

"Pain"/Nagato Uzumaki

The leader of Akatsuki and of Amegakure, as well as a self-proclaimed "God". He wields the powers of the Rinnegan, making him a very dangerous opponent.
  • Adaptational Relationship Overhaul: Kabuto shows great sympathy towards his goal of peace, causing him to remain loyal after the failed invasion of Kumo and even to work towards healing Nagato's body.
  • Adaptational Villainy: He doesn't pull a Heel–Face Turn like in-canon.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: With Obito, albeit is doesn't last past the invasion. Afterwards, it is alongside Kabuto, albeit the latter sees himself more as The Dragon.
  • Revenge Before Reason: After Yugito kills Konan, he tries to kill all other jinchūriki, instead of knocking them out as it was planned. This creates the rift that eventually drives Obito away from him.
  • Spoiler Title: Subverted with Chapter 128, "An End to Pain". While all of his bodies (including the Deva-Path/Yahiko, which was his "Pain"-persona) are destroyed by the Jinchūriki, during the Kumo-Invasion, Nagato himselfs lives, and reveals his true self and name to his remaining followers, while Kabuto begins working on a remedy for his crippled state.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: He is forced to reveal his true, crippled self to his followers after all his bodies are destroyed during the Kumo-Invasion. All of them are quick to accept him.
