Tropes applying to The Wandering Inn in general

  • Perpetual Poverty: A constant problem despite its growth. No matter the achievements or the new stuff that gets added to it, the incidents it goes through tends to leave it a wreck or lacking for whatever goals Erin has, especially when it comes to finances that at one point Lyonette calculated only to be a thousand or less gold pieces. Ishkr knows this, though he still prefers it to money-hungry Adventurer's Haven.

  • The Phoenix: Thematically speaking, this is what the inn seems to go through every now and then, as though it Levels up the same way people Level after dire situations. Whenever it gets wrecked, it eventually gets fixed back up by its people, better than before, so long as its owner, Erin, has the will to do the same. Not even Erin getting killed in Volume 8 keeps the inn closed when her death doesn't stick by the same volume's end!

Core Members

    Erin Solstice
The main viewpoint protagonist and proprietress of The Wandering Inn. She starts out as an [Innkeeper] and is a master-class chess player.
See her page for tropes related to herself.

    Lyonette du Marquin

[Princess] > [Worldly Princess]

Lyonette is a Terandrian [Princess] and sixth in line to the "Eternal Throne" of the Kingdom of Calanfer. After running away from home and being exiled from Liscor for stealing, Erin forcibly hired her at the Inn. She worked as Erin's head barmaid before growing to become her right-hand manager.

  • Action Pet: Apista the Ashfire Bee is bonded to Lyon after she spared her as a grub and began feeding her royal jelly. Apista isn't sentient, but does consider Lyonette to be her other half, and the Inn to be their "hive". She has enhanced intelligence, stinger, and the ability to burst into flames on command.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: To the Gnolls of Liscor when they try to lay claim to Mrsha:
Raekea: She is a Gnoll! She is one of us!
Lyonette: She is not yours! How dare you claim her? Where were you when she first came here, when she was lost and afraid? When you judged her by her fur? Don’t you dare call her yours.
  • The Atoner: She stole from half of Liscor’s merchants, accidentally destroyed the pride of the Silverfang Tribe, and insulted anyone who tried to help her. Now, she’s actively paying off her debt (in return for some of her magical artifacts being released back to her), granted royalty-necessitated Classes to Brunkr and Krshia, and acts as Erin’s loyal second in managing the Inn.
  • Bee Afraid: She struggles to steal honey from a hive of Ashfire Bees. Considering they're very large, very territorial, and have a tendency to burst into flames, she is rightly terrified the first few attempts. At least, until she becomes the [Beast Tamer] of Apista.
  • Break the Haughty: Lyonette faced the very real threat of starvation if she didn't willingly do real work for the first time in her life. She eventually becomes the manager of the Inn, a loving adopted mother to Mrsha, and good friends with Krshia (a victim of her earlier thefts) and Zevara (the Captain of the City Watch that exiled her).
  • Fallen Princess: After years of not levelling in her [Princess] Class, she ran away to Izril with several magical items. She starts out as a bitter Princess in Rags, before Taking A Level In Kindness.
  • Fiery Redhead: She's got red hair, plenty of choice words when she gets angry, and a sword she'll swing for her daughter, Mrsha, if it comes to it. This puts her in much similarity with her ancestor, minus the crass language, battle experience and scars.
  • Hot for Preacher: Has a relationship with Pawn.
  • In-Series Nickname: "Lyon", courtesy of Erin. She didn't like it at first, but then grew used to it, and even tries to use it to hide her [Princess] background. Emphasis on "tries".
  • Insistent Terminology: She hates the nickname “Lyon” when Erin first starts calling her that, but Character Development leads to her usually going by it.
  • Interspecies Romance: Enters into one with Pawn. Until the events of Volume 8 have made her doubt how well she can keep it up their relationship, especially when she tried to effectively sell her body to Cirediel for help in finding Mrsha, and was only stopped by Saliss. She then tells Pawn they have to break things off, leaving the [Priest] heartbroken.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Even at her worst and raised in a very Human-supremacist environment, she couldn’t bring herself to be mean to Mrsha. This eventually becomes subverted after her Break the Haughty moment.
  • Misery Builds Character: Almost starving to death after Erin took an accidental trip up north caused her to face her fears, overcome her disgust of Antinium and Drakes, and generally just Took a Level in Kindness. Erin even gets a What the Hell, Hero? moment from Zel Shivertail for putting her in that situation, and then treating her as if she was the same person.
  • Modest Royalty: After several Volumes of her going poor, struggling in the inn as a [Barmaid] before becoming its head manager, she works out a balance between her background as a princess and a worker of the inn, thinking of it as her castle like Erin suggested. As such, while a shaky position, she retains authority as a [Princess] even without Calanfer's official permission, on top of having a team of Thronebearers to call on when they come to find her, and letting her be a liaison for Ilvriss amongst Izril's Human nobles in Volume 9. This leads to her becoming the [Princess of the Inn] at the end of Volume 9.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: When she starts coming into the limelight on the scrying orbs and people start wondering about her background, she tries pretending she's just Lyon and even wears a wig, not wanting to return to Calanfer. It would've worked were it not for her parents sending Thronebearers after her, and the many people of importance she sees being in the know about Calanfer's politics.
  • Rags to Riches: Downplayed. The Wandering Inn is a far, far cry from the palaces and its luxuries of Calanfer, forcing Lyonette to work every day for its upkeep, but the many Volumes living with it, its friends and incidents alike have made her think of it as the home she never had.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She is a [Princess] (however fallen she is) who actively works at and manages The Wandering Inn. Takes on a straighter meaning when she's publicly acknowledged as one when Calanfer comes searching for her.
  • Spoiled Brat: Lyonette is the typical spoiled noble child. Even after Erin saved her from being frozen to death, or even eaten by monsters, Lyon thinks it's natural and expected for Erin to have done so, as she is a noble, and thus deserving of special treatment. Furthermore, she thinks it's only obvious that she can reside in Erin's inn, eat her food, and demand her assistance with traveling back home. After discovering that Erin actually expects her to work for all these things she thinks are her right, she is scandalized and enraged.
  • Young and in Charge: For someone 18 years old and didn't stand out much as a Calanferian [Princess] besides calling people "peons", she grows to become a competent manager of the Wandering Inn.

    Mrsha

[Druid], [Last Survivor], [Emberbearer]

At age six, Mrsha became the Sole Survivor of the Stone Spears Tribe of Gnolls after an attack by Reiss the Goblin Lord. Ryoka Griffin brought her to the Inn, where Lyonette and Erin serve as her primary caretakers.

  • Action Survivor: Her [Last Survivor] Class and white fur are the result of her being the last of the Stone Spears Tribe at the age of six.
  • Cute Mute: Erin, and Lyon helped her develop a functional sign language, and she also can communicate through prepared cards with written messages on them.
  • Druid: She consolidated her [Beast Tamer], [Gardener], and [Mage] Classes into [Druid] after solving a dispute between a group of Fortress Beavers, Shield Spiders, and Crelers.
  • Happily Adopted: Lyonette officially claims that she is Mrsha’s mother in Volume 6 after several months of being her caretaker.
  • Magnetic Plot Device: As a white Gnoll, she's considered a Doombringer, though allies of the Inn frequently dismiss such claims. In Volume 8, it's revealed by Wanderer that white Gnolls do have natural luck abilities, and being untrained in them likely influenced a lot of the events of earlier Volumes.
  • Parental Abandonment: Upon realizing she was mute, her biological parents tried to abandon her to the wilderness. When the rest of the Stone Spears Tribe realized this, the parents were exiled, and Mrsha was raised communally.
  • Power Incontinence:
    • An implied example before she knew about a Doombearer's luck powers, being a possible factor for why dangerous incidents have happened around The Wandering Inn.
    • Implied again but Played for Laughs at the Trial of a Thousand Blades. She curses the Manus contingent "with all the bad luck in the world" for being the ones to have dealt many casualties to Liscor's army and the Antinium during the war against Hectval—which is then followed by Durene the half-Troll, four Named-rank Adventurers, Archmages Eldavin and Viltach, and two heads of the Order of Seasons. Mrsha decides she did her job as leaves Rafaema slack-jawed.
  • Sole Survivor: Her [Last Survivor] Class and white fur are the result of her being the last of the Stone Spears Tribe at the age of six.
  • Troubled Child: From being subject to Parental Abandonment to being the Sole Survivor of her tribe, then getting kidnapped by Raskghar, being ostracized by superstitious Gnolls for being a Doombringersuperstitions that are proven potentially true by Wanderer, witnessing Erin's death, then meeting the parents who abandoned her at the Meeting of Tribes... Very troubled, yes.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Being a white Gnoll, she’s seen as this for good or ill. She has indirectly caused or contributed to her tribe’s death, Brunkr getting deathly ill, the defeat of the Raskghar in Liscor’s Dungeon, and the destruction of a nascent Creler nest.
  • White Wolves Are Special: Her fur turned white after her tribe’s destruction, marking her as a "Doombringer" in Gnoll culture. The Reveal in Volume 8 marks her as a "Doombearer".
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: Potentially, seeing as the white-furred Doombringers, or rather, Doombearers have the ability to manipulate luck. It is possible that some events in volumes before 8 had this as a factor, but Mrsha hasn't gotten a handle on this power even after realizing this fact.

    Bird

[Bird Hunter], [Singer], [Tactician], [Liar]

Bird was one of the five survivors of Erin's original Antinium chess club. He is obsessed with birds and became a [Hunter] so that he can shoot them. He currently works as a guard for the Inn.

  • Accidental Murder: Bird almost killed Halrac by shooting an arrow at him in a tense stand-off. When confronted later, he is shocked to realize that that might have actually killed "Mr. Halrac" and goes into shock over having almost killed someone he respects so much.

  • Cloudcuckoolander: He is considered odd by everyone he meets, including other Antinium. The Free Antinium Queen decides that he has some mental imbalances, and offers to "fix" him, but he refuses, saying that he would no longer be him if she did. His odd way of seeing things has led to some of the "oddest" chess games Erin has played including a few she actually lost.

  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Bird likes hunting birds, talking about birds, and singing his nonsense songs. Despite his often child-like nature, he can nonchalantly take down dozens of frost wyvrn "birds" with just a normal bow and arrow.

  • Master Archer: He starts off his archer, or rather, bird-hunting career quite well, being able to consistently land shots that have created a no-bird zone within miles around the inn and has used this skill to great effect whenever it comes under attack. It gets to the point that he downs the Wyverns invading Pallass even faster than most could by shooting them through their eyes.

  • Mistaken for Badass: While he is undoubtedly a Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass at times, his action in Pallass convince the entire world that he is a new Centenium who speaks with the authority of all Antinium and can call them to wage a Third Antinium War at his will. Klbkch is not amused.

  • Rogue Drone: Bird is a fully sentient "Individual" in the Hive of Free Antinium. Unlike the other Individuals, he operates almost completely separate from the Hive.

  • Single-Issue Wonk: Bird is obsessed with birds. He shoots birds. He eats birds. Eggs are "unborn birds" and moths are "moth-birds". He finds the Garuda fascinating, and adores Halrac because he taught him how to shoot birds better.

    Numbtongue

[Goblin Soulbard], [Miner], [Gambler]

Numbtongue was one of the thirteen Redfang Goblins sent by Garen to kill Erin Solstice. After several misadventures, the remaining five were hired by her as "Security". As of volume six, he is the only Hobgoblin at the Inn, and works as a [Bard].

  • Magic Music: Numbtongue has standard fare like music that magically relaxes or invigorates people, alongside a Skill that lets him bring down lightning bolts with the right piece of music.

  • Music Soothes the Savage Beast: Played with. He considers using this to calm a berserk Headscratcher, before deciding hitting him in the head with the guitar would be easier. Soothing music does come in handy to soothe a swarm of attacking Rock Mites though.

  • Shock and Awe: Likely as a result of learning rock music from Earth when first picking up the guitar, many of his abilities are electric in nature. Because his [Lightning Melody] Skill currently requires clouds to channel the lightning bolt through, it's limited in usefulness by the weather.

  • Willing Channeler: While any Goblin with a large enough following can receive memories from past Goblins in the form of dreams, [Goblin Soulbards] can actually collect the souls of dead Goblins and actively channel their spirits. Numbtongue has the soul of Pyrite, Shorthilt, and part of Reiss' soul, and can briefly channel one of them at a time, gaining all their memories, Classes, etc. in the process.

  • Worthless Yellow Rocks: Numbtongue takes up mining as a way to honor Pyrite, but like most Goblins adhering to the trope, he has no interest in the monetary value of what he digs up. He turns down several offers to sell mana stones before finally deciding to give them to Octavia so she can use them in alchemy experiments. His only request is that he gets some of the possible resulting potions, as those are useful.

Staff

    Ishkr Silverfang
  • Only Sane Man: For a good deal of the story, at least. Now he shares this role with Yelroan.

  • The Reliable One: Ishkr just wants to do his job, and he does it well.

    Octavia Cotton

  • Honest John's Dealership: Stitchworks Alchemy Shop is known for cheap, lower-quality potions, and Octavia, the owner, is always trying to make a quick sale. By Volume 6 she's gotten her hands on a source of higher-quality ingredients, toned down the aggressive sales pitches, and generally Taken a Level in Kindness.
