Voiced by: Kenji Nomura (Japanese), Paul St. Peter (English)

One of Zolgia's top enforcers.

  • An Arm and a Leg: In the manga, he attacks Lars only to have his arm chopped off. He grows it back, offscreen.
  • Blood Knight: All he wants to do is rampage, and kill people for his amusement.
  • The Brute: All he brings to the table is pure, brute strength, no finesse or technique, but he's got so much of it that he doesn't need techniques to be effective.
  • Character Death: He dies at the hands of Takashi.
  • Facial Markings: Whether it's a ritual tattoo or war-paint is not clear, but his face is clearly and dramatically delineated.
  • Hulking Out: Combined with Charged Attack. As if his strength and durability aren't already scary, he can swell up his muscle mass over time and at will to get even stronger and harder to take out.
  • Literally Shattered Lives: He's momentarily surprised by having Byakko stab him In the Back, but when he turns to attack Takashi, Byakko causes him to literally shatter and disintegrate.
  • Murder Is the Best Solution: As far as he's concerned, violence is the first, last, and best response to any situation.
  • No Body Left Behind: As a result of Byakko causing him to disintegrate, he doesn't leave a corpse.
  • Oh, Crap!: His reaction when he realizes Byakko is causing him to disintegrate, and there's nothing he can do to stop it.

    Leohart

Leohart

Voiced by: Kazuyuki Okitsu (Japanese), Kyle McCarley (English)

The current demon lord. He's the one who killed Wilbert and took the position.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Subtle, but profound, and off-screen. In Burst, he's fully credited with the death of Wilbert, in single combat. In the original light novel, both Claus of the Demon Moderates faction, and those closest to him in the Demon Lord faction, including himself, know he had absolutely nothing to do with Wilbert's death, especially considering that he was away fighting in the Great War at the time. The only reason anyone believes he did is because the Demon Council has been spreading stories to that effect purely for the sake of installing Leohart as a Puppet King.
  • Affably Evil: Despite being a villain, he seems to be polite with others such as Jin and Luka.
  • Anti-Villain: He is polite to his enemies, a competent ruler, an honorable warrior and the masses like him.
  • Ambiguously Brown: He's got very dark skin without explanation.
  • Arranged Marriage: With Liala, despite being adopted siblings.
  • Benevolent Boss: He tells his troops not to attack Jin because none of them would be a match for him. He later looks out for Luka's well being, making sure the talented mage doesn't work himself to death.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: His relationship with Liala is far closer than siblings should be.
  • Casting a Shadow: His sword, Loki, can hurl out waves of darkness based magic.
  • Catch and Return: In their brief spat, he and Jin bounced energy attacks back at each other.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: He and Liala have loved each other, romantically, since they were both children.
  • Defeat Means Respect: He didn't think much of Jin or Basara when he met them, but after fighting with Basara, he's happy to follow the teen's lead when dealing with Chaos. As far as friendship's concerned? Basara hasn't quite earned that yet, though Liala would very much like it if they did.
  • Didn't See That Coming: He was either unaware that Zolgia was going after Basara, or failed to consider that going after Basara would inevitably draw the attention of Jin, Basara's father, who is the reason Wilbert called for a truce in the first place.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He has an affection for his sister Liala.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: He loathes the Demon Council because they're corrupt, petty, and abusive, especially to those under their charge.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Provided by Kazuyuki Okitsu and Kyle McCarley.
  • Facial Markings: He's got two dark markings right below his eyes. Their purpose is not made clear.
  • Fair-Play Villain: So much so, one wonders if he's actually evil. He doesn't rely on Loophole Abuse to maintain his authority. He gives his enemies a fair hearing and genuinely delivers Sacred Hospitality. He keeps his word, even when it works against him. Most importantly, he treats anyone who defeats him honestly with genuine respect and admiration, not with backstabbing, treachery, or malice.
  • Forced into Evil: The Demon Council made him into a puppet king by killing his parents and threatening the continued well-being of Liala while he was away during the Great War, and continue using Liala as a hostage to ensure he complies with their demands.
  • Foreshadowing: His sword is "Loki" and Basara's is "Brynhildr." It shouldn't surprise anyone that the two swords cross in battle.
  • Fur and Loathing: He wears a cloak or coat that looks like it came from some furry beast.
  • The Good King: Amazingly enough. Leohart is no petty tyrant. Not only is he truly loved by the commoners in his faction, but even the "moderate" faction treats him with respect. His subordinates don't always get the same, nor do they always deserve it.
  • Graceful Loser: He takes his loss to Basara with class, and doesn't try to negate the victory by touting the tournament rules, or whine and complain about his loss, and happily accepts a hand up as a gesture of good will.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He's the one who tasks Zolgia with securing Mio, though he obviously neglects to consider the methods Zolgia would use in the process.
  • Happily Adopted: He was taken from an orphanage and adopted into Liala's family, to be raised as the son and heir. Liala doesn't seem to mind, and he treasured his new family wholeheartedly.
  • Heir-In-Law: He was adopted out of an orphanage by a demon noble family both to be the heir, and to marry their daughter because the girl's parents couldn't have any more children, and she, due to certain atavistic traits couldn't inherit the title. Both he and his prospective bride relished the idea with gusto.
  • Horned Humanoid: Like most demons, he has horns atop his head.
  • Hungry Weapon: Implied. He tells "Loki" to "devour" Jin.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: To show how cold and calculating he is, his eyes are blue and hard.
  • It's Personal: His hatred for the Demon Council isn't just because their personalities, ideology, and treatment of the Demon World are quite harmful, but because their treatment of himself, and his wife / stepsister, Liala is utterly abhorrent, and he rightfully wants revenge.
  • Klingon Promotion: He became the Demon Lord by killing Wilbert.
  • Lonely at the Top: He has very few subordinates he can trust in his position as Demon Lord, and he knows it. Those he can trust get treated very well.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's got shoulder-length hair and Jin calls him "young."
  • Not Blood Siblings: With Liala.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Being asked to sire the next heir with Liala actually makes both him and Liala very, very happy.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: He's no scheming scum. He fights honestly and straight up.
  • Puppet King: And he knows it. While he does have the magical power to kill any of the Demon council in a one-on-one fight, the group has greater authority than he does, and if he challenges or refuses their cowardly, corrupt, reckless, and frankly, suicidally stupid commands carelessly, he is well aware he will share Wilbert's fate. He is secretly very grateful "someone" eliminated Belphegor for him.
  • Reluctant Warrior: He thinks the Demon Council's decision to attack the moderate faction is reckless and foolish, especially considering the plan to use a relic they don't fully understand, but he goes along with it because he believes he has no other valid option.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: His goals are actually quite sympathetic and noble. Not only does he actually agree with Wilbert's agenda to bring peace and prosperity to the Demon World, and its citizenry, without exception, but he honestly wants to make his marriage to Liala public, using the authority he gains as Demon Lord to allow her to walk the streets openly without fear of discrimination. He just happens to not be particularly choosy about the methods he uses to pursue these goals. Granted, the Demon Council doesn't really give him much choice.
  • Winged Humanoid: He has wings that look similar to Zest's.

    Luka

Luka

Voiced by: Ayumu Murase (Japanese), Khoi Dao (English)

One of Leohart's top magicians, and the only one he trusts.

  • Elfeminate: Despite being a demon, he pretty much ticks off the checklist. If it wasn't for his horns, he'd fit the trope perfectly.
  • Facial Markings: There are two small marks under his eyes.
  • Horned Humanoid: Like most demons, he has horns.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: He will serve Leohart, no matter who the latter's enemy is.
  • Nothing Personal: In the tournament, he sics a "Heroic Spirit" on Mio and then says "don't think badly of me."
  • Powers Do the Fighting: He's completely helpless when his "Heroic Spirit" is defeated.
  • Undying Loyalty: He will obey the orders of Leohart, no matter how dificult, even if it costs him his life. In fact, Leohart has to order him to stand down and take a break, or he would work himself to death.
  • Workaholic: When given a task, he will work himself to death if he's not stopped. In fact, he was so fixated on his task of unsealing the unearthed relic during volume 4, that he didn't even hear Leohart call out to him, and Gald had to get his attention.

    Gald

Gald

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gald01.jpg

Voiced by: Taiten Kusunoki (Japanese), Armen Taylor (English)

Leohart's top general, and the former top general of Wilbert's armies.

  • An Arm and a Leg: Basara manages to chop his arm off as he's engaged in a bit of Evil Gloating.
  • Awesome by Analysis: He's able to figure out Basara's liai technique and the principle behind it by seeing it once.
  • Disney Death: Although he seemingly gets disintegrated by Nebra, it turns out that he's alive.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Kusunoki voices Gald with a deep, guttural voice.
  • Facial Markings: His face has red marks all over it.
  • Game-Breaking Injury: Combined with the Wound That Will Not Heal. Although Leohart's medics are able to stop the bleeding, the arm that was sliced off by Basara's Banishing shift can not be regenerated, healed or replaced by magic or an artificial limb because the universe treats Gald as if he never had that arm to begin with. This removes him from the battlefield, permanently.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: His humanoid appearance is him holding back.
  • Large and in Charge: Played With. While Leohart is his superior and is shorter, he's in charge of Leohart's army, and Leohart thinks Gald should be the demon lord, not himself.
  • Nothing Personal: He begs Basara not to take the attack personally before intending to kill Basara. Basara, understandably, has no intention of keeping his word and almost slashes him in half before Nebra intervenes.
  • Proud Warrior Race Guy: He's honest and up-front in combat, and sees war as a job, nothing more. He doesn't bear a grudge against opponents that fight him honestly and fairly, regardless of their motives.
  • Say My Name: He yells out Nebra's name as Nebra is killing him.
  • Sole Survivor: He's the only one of Wilbert's troops to survive battle with Jin Tōjō.
  • Unexplained Recovery: The anime shows him being disintegrated by an energy blast, yet Lars takes his unconscious body back to Leohart, and the ending of Burst shows he's alive and well, though still missing the arm that Basara blew off.

    Liala

Liala

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/liala01_7.jpg

Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue (Japanese), Karen Strassman (English)

Leohart's older sister.

  • Adaptational Heroism: During the finale of Burst where she massacres the Demon Council as they're about to blow up the city, Liala comes off as no less sympathetic than Ramsus, or Jin.
  • Affably Evil: Like her brother, Liala has a friendly personality.
  • Arranged Marriage: With her adopted brother Leohart.
  • Aura Vision: She can see things hidden by magic like Jin's dragon mode.
  • Bad Guys Do the Dirty Work: She saves everyone the trouble of killing the demon council by decapitating them in one fell swoop at the conclusion of volume 7.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Upon her introduction, she's shown abusing the family's pet hellhound. The only reason Leohart is able to stop her, is that he points out the "punishment" she intends to dish out is a physical impossibility. She needs an especially good and brave psychiatrist before she starts bearing children.
  • Bathtub Bonding: She ends the anime series sharing a bath with her brother, Leohart. The two of them act as if it's normal.
  • Battle Aura: She can project an aura of darkness that can make Jin get serious.
  • Beauty Is Bad: She's very physically attractive, but her personality can be quite unpleasant.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: She's goofy, and quite childish, but she obliterates the council faster than they can blink.
  • Big Sister Instinct: She kills the council when she hears that they are trying to kill her brother.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: She's far closer to Leohart than normal siblings should be. Her parents actually set it up to continue their bloodline.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: In Volume 7, she deals the death blow to the remaining Demon Council members.
  • Cute and Psycho: She portrays a very cute, bubbly personality, and it's genuine, but she's more than a little unhinged.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Doubles as a Freudian Excuse. While she was born looking like a "normal" demon, she eventually started showing atavistic traits of the "God" race, and her parents had to fake her death, and lock her in a tower, to keep her safe. Then, because her parents adopted Leohart to become the heir, and her husband, Belphegor stormed the family home demanding she be given to his "playground," killing her parents when they refused. When Leohart returned from fighting in the Great War and learned about all this, Wilbert's death had already resulted in him becoming a Puppet King, and he couldn't retaliate for fear of not only his own life, but Liala's well being. Small wonder she's a bit ... unstable.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Her parents fought to the death to keep her out of Belphegor's "playground." Despite having lost the fight, The Demon Council honored their wishes purely for the sake of using her as a hostage to ensure Leohart complies with their demands.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Or rather, The Demon Bites Back. Turns out the Demon Council is directly responsibile for the deaths of her parents, and exploiting her since she was a small child. She had more than ample justification for killing them all, even if they weren't planning to blow up the city she was living in.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She's very fond, and wildly protective, of her younger brother, Leohart.
  • Hidden Backup Prince: Due to the atavism of looking like one of the "God" tribe, she was hidden away most of her life.
  • Impractically Fancy Clothes: How does she wear that "dress" without slipping out the sides?
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Subverted. She certainly has the look of having an innocent demeanor, and she has blue eyes, but she's very dangerous, and knows full well what she's doing.
  • In-Universe Catharsis: Liala manages to settle the score with the remaining members of the Demon Council for their role in killing her parents, as well as their exploitation of her and Leohart.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In a non-romantic, non sexual way. While she doesn't care about Basara one way or another, she wants Basara to be friends with Leohart.
Liala:"You seem to get along well with Lars. Is it possible for you to be friends with Leo-kun?"
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Her killing of the Demon Council helped save the Demon Realm.
  • Not Blood Siblings: With Leohart.
  • Perfectly Arranged Marriage: Both she and Leohart are madly in love and want to crank out kids together.
  • Pointed Ears: Downplayed. Her ears are pointy but it's hardly noticeable.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Threatening Leohart and letting her find out about it is not conducive to your health. The Demon Council found this out, the hard way.
  • Winged Humanoid: In the light novel, she's often illustrated with angelic wings (though the upper tips are razor sharp and sometimes dripping the blood of her enemies.)

    Balflear

Balflear

Voiced by: Keiichi Nakagawa (Japanese), Zachary T. Rice (English)

Leohart's second-in-command.

  • Gentleman Detective: He is of aristocratic blood and rank, yet investigates the workings of the Demon Council like an actual sleuth would.
  • Horned Humanoid: He has horns on the side of his head.
  • Little Bit Beastly: His ears are like a cat's, and they sit atop his head.
  • Number Two: He's Leohart's second-in-command. However, it's later revealed that he's also loyal with with Kyoichi Shiba.
  • Stoic Spectacles: He wears glasses and is almost unflappable.
  • Undying Loyalty: He's completely loyal to Leohart and Shiba.

    Fio

Fio

Voiced by: Chika Anzai (Japanese), Jackie Lastra (credited as Jackie Lynn) (English)

A palace guard that Jin rescues from falling to his death in the aftermath of the brief fight with Leohart.

  • Child Soldier: As is noted in the narration of Volume 4 in the light novel, he's not even a teenager, and he's a soldier in the Demon Realm.
  • Defiant Captive: At first, until he realizes he's completely outclassed, then he's all too happy to share non-classified information with Jin.
  • Horned Humanoid: He has small, yet noticeable horns.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: As a castle guard, he's loyal to the country and its king, regardless of policy.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: He lashes out at Jin when Jin strips his armor and leaves him wearing only Jin's cape, to prevent him dying of hypo-thermia from being dunked in the river under Leohart's castle. After realizing he's outclassed, he settles down, but still calls Jin a pervert.
  • Pointed Ears: Like most demons, he has pointy ears.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: To show that he's a demon, he has golden eyes.
