     Huttser and Palla's pack

In General

  • Badass Family
  • The Chosen Many: Some wolves suspect that they are the family that the prophecy foretells.
  • Dwindling Party: They are cursed by Morgra to slowly die. The curse was fake, but nearly all of them do end up dead.

Larka

  • All-Loving Hero
  • Animal Eye Spy: Part of her power.
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: Kar sees her in a dream after her death, suggesting this.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: She has the Sight, which is generally seen as evil, but is a good wolf and the Sight was never "evil" or "good" anyway.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Appears in time to save Huttser and Palla from being forced to kill each other.
  • Break the Cutie: Starts out as an adorably curious cub, but then she loses nearly all of her family, not to mention how It Sucks to Be the Chosen One.
  • Cain and Abel: She ends up having to confront Fell, but she convinces him to join him.
  • Care-Bear Stare: Projects her positive emotions to get Fell on her side again.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Kar.
  • The Chosen One: Though the prophecy only mentions her vaguely as an omen foretelling the man-vargs's birth, she turns out to be one of the most powerful users of the Sight, part of the family mentioned in the prophecy and the wolf who ends up activating the vision instead of Morgra.
  • Constantly Curious: As a cub.
  • Disney Death: Subverted. She seemingly returns in the final chapter, but it turns out to actually be Slavka.
  • Disney Villain Death: She dies by falling off a collapsing bridge.
  • Honor Before Reason: Why she doesn't let Skart kill Kraar after promising him he would live and refuses to kill Morgra when she's defenseless.
  • Identical Stranger: She looks nearly identical to Slavka.
  • It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: She thinks this.
  • Power Trio: With Fell and Kar.
  • The Promise: Makes one to always stay with Kar and Fell.
  • Sole Survivor: By the time she finds Tsarr and Skart she believes she's the only survivor of her pack, though it turns out that Huttser, Palla, Kar, and Fell as still alive.
  • Stupid Sacrifice: She has a premonition of her death, but is willing to die anyway to stop Morgra... except that she later finds out that it is possible to change the future, and decides at the last minute to jump out of the way as the bridge that she and Morgra are standing on collapses but she is a second too late.

Kar

  • Big Damn Heroes: He finally reunites with Larka, just in time to stop her from being trapped in the Red Meadow forever.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: With Larka.
  • Despair Event Horizon: After being stranded from his family, completely alone, and nearly dead, in the middle of a land ravaged by war and possibly nearing the apocalypse, he just retreats into his den and refuses entrance to anyone.
  • Disney Death: He seemingly dies in a fire which separates him from Larka, but Larka finds out he's alive due to her powers.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Being alone is a big part of his brief Sanity Slippage near the start of the third part.
  • Lovable Coward: His characterization as a cub.

  • The Promise: Makes one to always stay with Larka and Fell. More than either of the other two, he keeps it.
  • Sanity Slippage: Near the start of part 3.

Fell

  • Anti Anti Christ: He is actually Wolfsbane, the wolves' equivalent of Satan, but manages to overcome his evil until Morgra brainwashes him to be her servant, and even then he ends up fighting on Larka's side in the end.
  • Barred from the Afterlife: He is believed to have drowned, which means this according to wolves' beliefs. This means that Larka is so happily surprised to see him in the Red Meadow that she forgets her instructions and is nearly trapped there. Though it turns out that he's actually alive, because the Red Meadow isn't a real afterlife but just made of memories of the deceased.
  • Cain and Abel: He ends up fighting Larka, but Larka convinces him to make a Heel–Face Turn.
  • The Chosen Wannabe: He loves the idea of having powers like Larka does.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: He's a black wolf who is also Wolfbane himself, but he ends up not being a villain in the end.
