Children of Light

    Pots Talos
A member of Orgard's thief guild, who quits and seeks redemption after he kills an innocent family. He's the reborn soul of Vandar Rowan.
  • The Atoner: He spends much of the game wanting to find a way to atone for killing Virgil Mythos's family. In the normal ending, he sacrifices himself so that the rest of the team can seal Virgil and Maultor in the Tower of Illyrium. In the true ending, he stays behind in the Celestial Realm in order to watch over Tantalasia and Malviticus's statues.
  • Blade Spam: His Lacerate skill has him slash multiple times, with the number of slashes increasing depending on his current speed.
  • Daddy Issues: His father verbally abuses him for being a Muggle Born of Mages, which explains Pots's insecurities. This gets worse when he learns his father is actually the Watcher, due to a deal with Validus to bring his wife back. When the party discovers Cyrus created several grotesque bodies for his wife's soul to inhabit, Pots calls him out on his madness, but Cyrus continues to blame Pots for the experiment that killed her. Afterward the party mortally wounds him, Cyrus finally apologizes for his actions and Pots has Cyrus's lab burned down to prevent his father's mistake from being repeated.
  • Dual Wielding: He can wield two light swords, but each sword isn't that strong on its own, meaning his overall normal attack damage is about on part with single-wielders.
  • Glass Cannon: He has the best Dexterity growth of the party and has skills with excellent damage multipliers. He can also buff himself by stealing stats from the enemy. However, his HP and defensive stats are low.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: In the true ending, he feels that he failed his own personal redemption, since he was unable to save Virgil from Malviticus and Laeni from turning into Tantalasia.
  • Klingon Promotion: After killing Swahn, the leader of the Veil of the Black Hand thief guild, Pots takes over the guild and has them join in the battle against Validus.
  • Loveable Rogue: Deconstructed. While he's nice for a thief, the guild rules require him to kill all witnesses to his missions, including innocent ones or those who were forced into evil like Eron Mythos. This causes him to become a guilt-ridden man, even to the end of the game.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: While he strives to be more ethical as a thief, he's still a thief and is willing to use deceitful methods if it'll help him in his quest, as shown when he tricks a Astral townsperson into telling him how to get to Ghar Amal.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Even after Virgil is karmically killed in the true ending, Pots is upset at his death and admits he still wanted to seek forgiveness from his former friend.
  • Time Stands Still: He's the only party member who can wear Vandar's Gauntlets, which allows him to stop time once per battle. He is also immune to enemy time stops when wearing this gear.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Killing the Mythos family causes Virgil to burn down the village of Tallas in rage and become a power-hungry wizard.

    Atrius Althorand
The leader of Orgard's thief guild and a former Amanor aristocrat.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He cares for his sister, Laeni, and is fond of his apprentice Pots as well. When Eldromus Blackheart kills Laeni, Atrius swears revenge and eventually deals the finishing blow to Blackheart.
  • Blade Spam: He can also use Lacerate, but his version of the skill is tied to Atreyu's Doublet rather than something he can learn naturally.
  • Crutch Character: He starts in the low 20s and is much stronger than Pots who starts at level 1. Once the party catches up to his level, he's still fairly powerful, but doesn't have the sheer DPS potential of Pots.
  • Duel Boss: When Wein tries to investigate the Paladin murders in Sovereign, Atrius tries to mug him, resulting in a one-on-one boss fight.
  • Lovable Rogue: He may be a smug assassin, but he goes to great lengths to keep his sister safe. Despite Pots leaving the guild, Atrius is still willing to help him escape from Azrael and has the guild stall the Gauf. He is also sympathetic to the plight of Amanor's citizens and wants to have Korin reclaim the throne in order to restore the country to its former glory.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: His no witnesses policy causes Pots to kill the Mythos family, leading to Virgil become an evil mage.
  • Unwitting Pawn: During the Veil of the Black Hand quest, it's revealed that his assistant, Gerard, helped him start his own thief guild as part of the Black Hand's agenda.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: In his flashbacks of when he escaped the slaughter of his family, he was a wide-eyed youth who couldn't imagine the idea of such an evil deed. In the present, he's a ruthless thief guild leader.

    Virgil Mythos
An Untouched wizard who want to learn how to control his powers. He's the reborn soul of Ledonel.
  • An Arm and a Leg: He loses his arm when he attempts to break the seal on the Tower of Amon'Quel, though the Watcher gives him an artificial pink arm. The party eventually hears of a report of a man with a pink arm serving as Zacharael's apprentice, causing them to realize that the apprentice is Virgil.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: In the normal ending, he succeeds in absorbing Maultor and eventually breaks out of the Tower of Illyrium.
  • Bastard Understudy: He become Zacharael's apprentice, but only cares about gaining magic knowledge and becomes arrogant when he surpasses Zacharael. After Zacharael loses to the party, Virgil uses the Singularity on him to steal his powers and memories.
  • Big Bad Slippage: He starts as a party member and seems to value his friendship with Pots, but it's later revealed that Pots's murder of his family caused him to develop a lust for power and revenge. When he enrolls in Sorbithia, he's upset at how he feels the Circle of Twelve is limiting him and he eventually falls for Zacharael's temptation to become his apprentice. Eventually, his ambition causes him to betray Zacharael and use the Hourgem of Valnyr for himself, leading to him learning the Singularity spell from Khargynoth. He then uses Singularity to fuse with Zacharael and Adramelech, and then feigns loyalty to Maultor. In the normal ending, Virgil succeeds in absorbing a weakened Maultor and manages to unseal himself 1000 years into the future, usurping Maultor/Malviticus's role as Big Bad.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: In the true ending and the ending where the party loses to Maultor, Virgil fails to use the Singularity on the Dark Emperor, resulting in him getting killed or being taken over from within respectively.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Despite hating Pots for killing his family, Virgil always spare the party because he needs them to fight Maultor and weaken him, allowing Virgil to use the Singularity to fuse with Maultor.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Played with. Despite having the Hourgem of Valnyr, he refuses to use it to save his family, since that would cause the timeline to change and prevent him from becoming a powerful wizard. However, if Pots chooses to save the Mythos family over Laeni, Virgil is touched by this offer and saves Laeni to show his gratitude.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He starts as a normal young man from Tallas before discovering his magic powers, and even then, he's at such a low level that he can only cast a few spells with his low MP. After training with Zacharael and Khargynoth, he masters the Singularity and absorbs Zacharael and Adramelech. In the normal ending, he even succeeds in absorbing Maultor, the avatar of an evil god.
  • The Gift: He has a lot of talent in learning magic despite having no formal education until he goes to Sorbithia. This is why Zacharael chose him as an apprentice, though he didn't expect that Virgil would surpass him and absorb him.
  • Godhood Seeker: His goal is to absorb Maultor/Malviticus and take his place as the god of darkness. He succeeds in the normal ending.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: He tells Pots that he shouldn't have trusted Hadriel, who is a constant turncoat. On the other hand, it's a mystery why the Gauf keep him around despite how his betrayals of Zacharael and Adramelech are implied to be open secrets.
  • The Starscream: In all the endings, he attempts to betray Maultor and use the Singularity on him. He only succeeds in the normal ending.
  • The Unfought: Despite becoming an antagonist, he's never fought as a boss, though he kills two party members in a normal ending cutscene.
  • Walking Spoiler: Due to him defecting to the Validians, his entire folder is full of spoilers.
  • Where I Was Born and Razed: When he sees his family's corpses, he burns down his entire hometown of Tallas in rage.
  • You Killed My Father: Pots killed his family, though Virgil doesn't learn this until he uses the Hourgem of Valnyr. While Virgil does eventually want to take revenge on Pots, he wants to keep Pots and the Children of Light alive long enough to weaken Maultor, allowing Virgil to absorb his supposed boss with the Singularity spell.

    Kaelas Tangralas
A druid from the Drakkenwood and the reborn soul of Cael Vaeili.
  • Cutscene Power to the Max: In a cutscene, he transforms into a large bird to fly the party away. In combat, he cannot transform into a bird.
  • Demonic Possession: At the end of the Farlen Island sidequest, he gets possessed by the mad ghost of Cael Vaeili and has to be defeated in order to be freed.
  • Master of None: He has several transformations to suit both physical and magical purposes, but he falls behind specialized party members in terms of physical damage, magic damage, elemental variety, and healing. This is also reflected in his final weapon, which increases both physical and magic attack, but isn't exceptional in either.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: As a druid, he can transform into a panther, bear, treant, or elemental, with each form having its own strengths and weaknesses. Unlike most druids, who only have one transformation, he's considered exceptional for having multiple transformations.

    Bruger Ironhelm
A dwarf who was raised in the Zarduun Plains rather than the dwarven city of Frosthammer. He's the reborn soul of Ulgar Shinestone.
  • The Berserker: He can learn several rage-type buffs, which increase his power and speed at the cost of defense. However, this is separate from the Berserk status, since he's still controllable when using these rage modes.
  • Explosive Overclocking: He can learn Deathless Frenzy, which buffs him and makes him invincible for a few turns before killing him.
  • Friendly Rivalry: He becomes rivals with Agramed Oslo after the latter defeats the party at Oslen. After defeating Agramed in the Osiris tournament, they officially become allies, though Agramed does want to challenge Bruger again someday. They get their rematch if the player uses Bruger to win the special solo cup in Osiris.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: He initially lacks the confidence to lead the dwarves of Frosthammer against the drow army, since he lacks any experience with their culture. After hearing about the sacrifices his father made to maintain the prophecy of the Silverspark Axe, Bruger gains the confidence needed to unite Frosthammer to retake Urbor Dun.

    Elric Yore
An archer and former aristocrat of Sovereign who the party saves outside the Tower of Amon'Quel. He teams up with the Children of Light to learn the truth behind his father's death.

    Elaenia Althorand
The sister of Atrius Althorand and a talented healer.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Her friends call her Laeni, a shortened version of her first name.
  • Back for the Dead: She's killed by Eldromus Blackheart, but at the end of the Archipelago sidequest, Virgil revives her. However, Laeni ends up sacrificing her mind and body to Tantalasia, who then seals herself and Malviticus away.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She willingly allows Tantalasia to take over her body so that the latter can seal herself away with Malviticus.
  • Morality Pet: She's this to her Love Interest, Pots, who gains the strength to resist Eldromus's temptation because of their mutual love. Unfortunately, Eldromus noticed and kills Laeni in order to send Pots into a Heroic BSoD.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Subverted. When she interrupts Virgil's attempt to fuse with Maultor, it gives Maultor a chance to fully transform into Malviticus. When seen in context with the normal ending and the Maultor victory ending, this is actually the best case scenario, since her actions prevent the creation of a foe with the combined powers of Malviticus and Virgil.
  • Purposely Overpowered: After the Archipelago sidequest, she's brought back with a repertoire of healing spells that would break any other RPG. Justified because the goddess Tantalasia is possessing her body.
  • Split-Personality Merge: When she's brought back from the past, Tantalasia possesses her body and combines their personalities. However, Laeni allows Tantalasia to become the dominant personality in order to seal Malviticus.
  • Symbiotic Possession: When Tantalasia possesses her, she's allowed to keep her personality and the two have the common goal of defeating Maultor/Malviticus.
  • Took a Level in Badass: She starts with no offensive skills, but eventually learns Holy, one of the best single-target offensive spells. After her past self is brought to the present, she instantly jumps to level 65 and is able to learn several powerful healing spells, including an party-wide auto-life buff.
  • Tsundere: She's sweet by default, but can be snippy if Pots and Atrius don't spend enough time with her.
  • Walking Spoiler: As a party member who dies, gets revived, and becomes Tantalasia's vessel, it's hard to talk about her without spoilers.
  • White Magician Girl: She's a kindhearted priestess who accepts Pots despite his flaws.

    Griswold Stormprey
Sorbithia's Master of the Adept, who is also the reborn soul of Arman Gill.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Virgil uses a spell to control him and force him to help unseal Grindelwald Maultor.
  • Crutch Character: He starts at a higher level than Laeni, but she can quickly surpass him in healing, buffing, and damage with enough leveling. This subverted when Laeni is killed by Blackheart, meaning Griswold ends up becoming the best available healer when he rejoins. This is double subverted at the end of the Archipelago, where Laeni is brought back with the ability to learn all the best healing spells.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He's not happy to learn that several of his colleagues in the Circle of Twelve, Carlo Scarpa, Kahr Vahlen, Cyrus Talos, Kingsley Hallenden, and Zale Farina, are all either agents of Validus or sold out to Validus.

    Wein Beranedyn
A paladin of Sovereign who is believed to be the reborn soul of Arthur Greyhem.
  • Awesome Moment of Crowning: In the normal and true endings, he takes the throne of Greyhem by birthright, due to being Arthur's grandson. Saving the world from Maultor also helps his bid to become king.
  • Doomed Hometown: His hometown, Kaharnin, was burned to the ground by the Forlorn, who specifically targeted this town because they wanted to kill Wein for being the only descendant of Arthur Greyhem.
  • Manly Tears: He has a face portrait with Ocular Gushers, which is used whenever he's comically upset by injustices.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: He supposedly has the ability to break Maultor's hold over humans, since as the grandson of Arthur, his blood is supposed to be untainted. While infiltrating Validus's cadet classes, he gets General Chauser and Agrippa to pull a Heel–Face Turn because of their respect for his conduct. It's unknown if this is due to his charisma, his blood, or both.
  • Mighty Glacier: He has some decent physical-magic hybrid skills and good defenses, but he's also very slow.
  • Older Than They Look: Due to having elven blood, he can live longer than humans and no one knows his real age.
  • The Paladin: He's a knight who uses his light-based powers to protect the weak.
  • Red Herring: He isn't the reincarnation of Arthur Greyhem like most people and the player expected. Instead, he's the grandson of Arthur, which is only possible in the present day due to Arthur marrying an elf. However, he still gets Arthur's equipment, unlike Belkas who gets Gerald's equipment despite being Arthur's reincarnation.

    Quathorn Vaias
A conjurer who studies in Sorbithia. He's the reborn soul of Amon'Quel.
  • Inept Mage: He's unable to excel in the more traditional form of magic, causing his peers to bully him and lock him in a room. Then he finds Berenus's summon orb in the room and discovers his talent for Summon Magic.
  • Kung-Fu Wizard: His AP skills has him fight with martial arts while his MP skills all summon creatures to deal magic damage.
  • Weak, but Skilled: His magic stat is not as high as other mages, but most of his summons have status effects or debuffs that normal AOE spells don't.

    Furi Stormcrow
A daughter of a member of the Circle of Twelve. She acts arrogant, but secretly feels pressured by her father's reputation.
  • Call to Agriculture: Her trial to become a member of the Circle of Twelve has her stuck in an illusionary farm where she can't use her magic. To escape, she has to use the farm's tools and facilities to find specific ingredients and create a potion that will teleport her out of there.
  • Good Counterpart: She's revealed to be this to Virgil, who becomes a villain obsessed with magic power. In contrast, Furi's trials to become a member of the Circle of Twelve have her learn that no matter how powerful her magic is, she must appreciate non-magic skills in order to survive. As a result, while she doesn't gain the same amount of power as Virgil, she becomes more disciplined and capable of using her powers for good.
  • Moveset Clone: She can learn the same spells as Virgil, with the exact same level requirements.

    Agramed Oslo
A former Osirian general who was enslaved for supposedly attacking Chieftain Moreth.
  • Dual Wielding: He can wield axes and greatswords in both hands.
  • Frame-Up: The truth behind his enslavement is that he was trying to keep Moreth from killing High Chieftain Jomerys, but then got framed for trying to kill Moreth.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: The first battle against him is impossible to win without obscene overleveling. In the next battle with him, he's nerfed so that Bruger can beat him solo.
  • Made a Slave: Unlike other slaves, Agramed is stuck with permanent slave status for attacking another chief and cannot be freed, even if he wins gladiator championships.
  • Support Party Member: While he's strong offensively, his main role in battle is to apply group buffs, which don't cost him anything. When Laeni is killed by Blackheart, he's becomes the only source of group buffs until her past self is extracted into the present.
  • Worf Had the Flu: In his first duel with Bruger, he was injured from a Netherbeast attack, keeping him from fighting at his best. When Bruger rematches him in the special solo cup, Agramed becomes one of the toughest solo battles in the game.

    Valdraek
A Zarduun plainsmen who was exiled for using magic, leading him to become a smuggler.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He hits on both Laeni and Adelle. It's implied he speaks French to uphold this kind of image, since no one else in Zarduun speaks that way.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Pots fights him as a Duel Boss. While the first round is easy, the second round has him use his fire state and become much stronger. Even if Pots holds out long enough, Valdraek will eventually use a skill that knocks out Pots in one hit.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He's somewhat justified in refusing Pots and Laeni's request to take them to Porthul, which is considered too dangerous for ships due to their conflict with Validus and could present a risk to his business and his crew. While Pots and Laeni are supposed to go there as the Children of Light, Valdraek didn't know about their destiny at the time. Once he realizes who they are, he agrees to take them to Porthul and join their party.
  • Magic Knight: He has the ability to change his element, which changes his resistances, skill list, and stats.
  • Reluctant Hero: He's initially reluctant to go back to Zarduun to save its people from Azcol, since they shunned him for his magic despite his efforts to save Tarim from the Kaizul. This is also shown during the sidequest to save Amanor, where he's reluctant to help the people there because of their xenophobia.

    Caelia
A descendant of Amon'Quel, who specializes in alchemy.
  • Satellite Love Interest: She has some Ship Tease with Wein, but their romance is less developed than Pots and Laeni's. She's also tied with Hiro for lack of screentime and character development.
  • Weak, but Skilled: Her offensive skills are weak, but have special ailments that most enemies can't resist.

    Hiro Cortlabar
A descendant of Eldromus Cortlabar, who is a commander in Sovereign.
  • Flat Character: Like Caelia, he doesn't have his own character arc and doesn't have much dialogue outside of occasionally snarking at Wein.
  • Stone Wall: His offense and speed aren't that high, but he has the best defensive stats of the party.

    Belkas Swordhand
The arrogant descendant of Gerald Swordhand, he thinks he's the true reborn soul of Arthur Greyhem.
  • The Atoner: When he regains his senses, he regrets that his alliance with the Validians resulted in Arne and Jemman's deaths, resulting in him joining the party. There are side events where he can personally report their deaths to their families.
  • Cassandra Truth: He's a haughty buffoon who sides with the Validians, making it laughable that he could be Greyhem's reincarnation, especially when Wein is more similar to the ancient hero. It turns out he really is Greyhem's reincarnation and Wein is Greyhem's grandson.
  • Lethal Joke Character: His terrible accuracy is an inside joke about the original D&D campaign, where he would always have bad rolls. Despite his, he is the only character who can apply Full Sunder, which debuffs all of the target's stats and stacks with the more common status debuffs.
  • More than Mind Control: He becomes susceptible to Kahr Vahlen's brainwashing magic because he wants to believe he's the true hero and not Wein.
  • Red Herring: Given that Gerald Swordhand is one of the Warriors of Light, one would assume Belkas is his reincarnation. Despite that, he's actually Arthur Greyhem's reincarnation, though he still uses Gerald's Ancestral Weapon and armor instead of Arthur's.
  • Rival Turned Evil: When the Children of Light save the miners of Miner's End, Belkas becomes jealous of them, especially Wein because everyone considers him Arthur Greyhem reborn. This leads to Validus recruiting and brainwashing him by playing on his desire to one-up Wein. Once he's freed from Kahr's brainwashing, he drops his rivalry with Wein and joins the party.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: He has the worst accuracy in the game, but is otherwise built like a Mighty Glacier in terms of offensive and defensive stats. His unique gear comes with accuracy bonuses to alleviate this.

    Adelle Justar
An engineer working for Valdraek and a potential gunslinger.
  • Daddy Issues: She has a grudge against her father because he refused to help Wald when he was being framed and attacked by Amanor aristocrats. Though they put aside their differences when Wald sacrifices himself to protect them from a demon.
  • Glass Cannon: She has good speed and powerful multihit attacks that can't be resisted by most enemies, but her defenses are low.
  • Guns Akimbo: She can dual-wield guns.
  • Her Heart Will Go On: After her first Love Interest, Wald, is killed in battle, she continues helping the party and soon becomes recruitable.
  • Magikarp Power: She starts at level 1, but leveling her up and upgrading her guns will give her DPS rivaling Pots.
  • Optional Party Member: If the Black Powder is acquired, it's possible to recruit her inside the airship.
  • Second Love: In the normal and true endings, she marries Valdraek.

Validus Leadership

    Grindelwald Maultor
The seemingly immortal emperor of Validus, who corrupted the First Men into serving him.
  • Assimilation Backfire: In the ending where he wins his boss battle, Virgil casts Singularity on him, but Maultor takes over Virgil from the inside. Averted in the normal ending, where he's too wounded to fight back.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He's a demagogue who uses his charisma and promises of safety and order to gain his people's favor. In reality, he only uses them as a means to kill the elves and claim the Hourgem of Valnyr.
  • The Corrupter: A flashback reveals he took the First Men into the Tower of Illyrium and performed a ritual that turned them into the Gauf, bringing out their worst personality traits.
  • The Dragon: Subverted. He claims to be the champion of the One True God, Malviticus. He's actually Malviticus in a relatively weaker human form.
  • God-Emperor: Inverted. He's the emperor of Validus, is immortal, and is the strongest human in the world, but claims to merely be a powerful servant of Malviticus. He's actually Malviticus's avatar.
  • God in Human Form: He's Malviticus's human avatar, who wants to regain his original divine form after being banished from the Celestial Realm.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: He claims that the elves need to be killed in order to end the Blight that caused all of Validus's lands to become infertile. He's the one who caused the Blight and wants to kill the elves to take their Hourgem of Valnyr and spite the other gods.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He fights the party before doing anything about Virgil, who he already knows is a backstabber and is an equal or greater threat than the party. This gets him killed in the normal ending, where he's unable to counter Virgil's Singularity.
  • Walking Spoiler: Since he's really the god, Malviticus, who was originally thought to be his boss, he's hard to talk about without spoilers.

    Eldromus Blackheart
Originally of the Cortlabar family, Eldromus is a fanatically loyal general of Validus who got sealed into the Abyss for his crimes against elvenkind and for betraying the Warriors of Light. He eventually resurfaces as an immortal hellbent on unsealing his evil master.
  • Co-Dragons: He ends up sharing this role with Virgil Mythos, being the two closest servants of Maultor due to the two being stronger than the Gauf. Though unlike Virgil, Eldromus has no intention of betraying Maultor.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: This trope goes both way. He is known as the Betrayer for selling out Arthur Greyhem's plans to the Validian brass. From his perspective, Arthur is the traitor to Validus and therefore Eldromus is obligated to expose him.
  • Hero Killer: Not only did he kill the Warriors of Light upon his return, in the present, he kills Laeni out of spite for Pots refusing to work for him. He later kills Lorac Galadrius during the battle of the Blighted Lands.
  • Knight Templar: In his human life, he fully bought into Maultor's propaganda about the elves causing the blight and believes his sadism and racism against them is justified. It's unknown if he still believes that propaganda after his return as an immortal.
  • Moveset Clone: Other than the dark magic he gained from the Abyss, he primarily uses his family's Dragoon skills in his boss battles.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He goes from a fairly ordinary Dragoon to an unstoppable Magic Knight with powers over the undead. He also ends up ranking higher than the Gauf, who were previously higher in Validus's chain of command.

    The Gauf
Ten of the First Men who were turned into magical warlords by Maultor. Their ranks include Raziel, Zacharael, Larienael, Azrael, Israfel, Omniel, Hadriel, Sammael, Veriel, and Adramelech.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: The ritual to turn them into Gauf changed them for the worse, making them more power hungry and less caring of their people.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: While he doesn't outright betray Maultor, Zacharael wanted to study the Hourgem of Valnyr and use it to learn Khargynoth's magic, but knew he had to do so before Maultor is released, since he knows his boss will monopolize the Hourgem.
  • Dual Boss:
    • Veriel fights alongside the Watcher in Sorbithia's Lexicron.
    • Hadriel and Israfel are the last Gauf rematch in the Tower of Illyrium.
  • Evil Counterpart: Hadriel ends up being a dark mirror to Pots, who has a similar roguish moveset and also wants to atone for his crimes. The difference is that Pots had the moral support of Laeni and his friends to help him become a better person while Hadriel is all alone, leading to him breaking under torture and losing the will to defy the Validians.
  • Fallen Hero: They were once the benevolent leaders of humanity and knew nothing of war, or even murder. Then Maultor exploits their naivety to tempt them into accepting his power.
  • Freudian Excuse: They started out pure-hearted, but the pain of outliving their descendants caused them to become susceptible to Maultor's corruption.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Hadriel sold out the Gauf and Maultor's weaknesses to the Warriors of Light because he felt guilty about what the First Men had become, and willingly allowed himself to be sealed with his brethren as atonement. After the Gauf break out, Hadriel ends up serving Validus again, but helps the Children of Light after they defeat him in exchange for his life. After Sammael temporarily kills him for his betrayal, the Validians torture the revived Hadriel until he is broken enough to comply with them for the rest of the game.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: Zacharael's first battle and the second form of Adramelech cannot be won, since they will use a scripted kill move even if the player manages to survive their initial assault. Unlike with Zacharael, Adramelech doesn't live long enough for a rematch.
  • Immortals Fear Death: Zacharael and Adramelech are utterly terrified when Virgil uses the Singularity on them, since they can't be revived at the Tower of Illyrium if they're fused with him.
  • Leaking Can of Evil: They somehow managed to escape the Tower of Illyrium without Maultor, though if they're killed, they can't easily leave again until the tower's seal is broken.
  • Motive Decay: They originally accepted their transformation into a Gauf because they believed it was the only way to protect their people from the Blight. Now they no longer care for their people and instead only care about gaining power for themselves.
  • Moveset Clone:
    • Raziel the Summoner has a similar moveset as Quathorn, who also has Summon Magic. This is lampshaded by Omniel when he transforms into Quathorn.
    • Hadriel has Pots's stat stealing skills, which allow him to debuff the enemy and buff himself if he successfully lands the skills.
  • No Cure for Evil: Averted with Veriel, who has healing magic and can revive her allies in the second Wolfpack Boss of the Tower of Illyrium.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: The Gauf won't hesitate to betray each other in order to compete to gain Maultor's favor. For example, Omniel was masquerading as Yen and traveled with the party to Arad Munlo, yet did nothing to help Zacharael because he sees the latter as an obstacle.
  • Resurrective Immortality: Originally, they were simply The Ageless. After transforming into the Gauf, they became bound to the Tower of Illyrium, where they're resurrected every time they die.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: After being tortured for betraying Maultor and the Gauf, Hadriel becomes desperate to escape this hell and agrees to help Virgil and the Gauf lure the party into a trap. His reward is getting killed again, since Virgil and the Gauf don't trust him anymore.
  • Wolfpack Boss: Thanks to the Tower of Illyrium, any Gauf who hasn't been a victim of the Singularity spell has to be fought again. Hadriel and Israfel form a Dual Boss, leaving everyone else to split into groups of three.

Deities

    Auroria
The goddess of the Four Winds.
  • Demonic Possession: Malviticus summoned a demon to possess her elven avatar, Jensralia, resulting in her slaughtering her children.
  • God in Human Form: She appeared on Tenat as the elf, Jensralia.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: One sidequest requires the party to free her from the demon possessing her, allowing her to return to the Celestial Realm, where she's killed by Malviticus in the true ending.

    Malviticus (Unmarked Spoilers)
The god of darkness and death, who all Validians worship as the One True God despite the existence of other deities in the pantheon.
  • Attention Whore: He hates that the other gods, especially his family, pay more attention to their mortals than to him.
  • Big Bad: He is the true form of Maultor and is the mastermind behind Validus's genocidal wars and conspiracies against the rest of the world.
  • Cain and Abel: He's the younger brother of Tantalasia and seeks to take over both Tenat and the Celestial Realm, putting them at odds.
  • Fallen Angel: He was meant to manage the Abyss and cooperate with the other deities, but his ambition and pride caused him to rebel against them.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: He mocks Virgil for being so obsessed with power that he oversteps his bounds, and then kills Virgil to prove his point. The same thing can be said about Malviticus himself, whose desire to control the Celestial Realm leads to him being exiled by the other gods and eventually sealed by Tantalasia.
  • Jerkass Gods: He's a narcissistic and sadistic god who sees his human creations as tools to hurt the other gods and their creations.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: He claims that he wants to oppose the Elder Gods so that the rest of the pantheon can be free of their suffocating rules. This falls flat considering he murdered every other deity except for Tantalasia.
  • One-Hit Kill: He has several Herd Hitting Attacks that can kill a fully leveled and equipped party, the strongest of which is Event Horizon, which deals five digit damage when the party members only have four digit HP. He's balanced with the expectation that the player is spamming some form of auto-life.
  • Satanic Archetype: Malviticus is a self-centered divine being who feels limited by the rules that the higher gods placed on him and despises all other gods for not acknowledging him. In response, he spitefully uses a demon to possess Auroria and force her to go on a murderous rampage against her own creations. After being cast out of the Celestial Realm for his crimes, he takes the form of a brightly-dressed man, masquerades as a servant of a god of light, and manipulates Validus into starting a genocidal war against the elves. He also has control over the Abyss and allows his worshipers to summon demons as allies. After regaining his true form, which looks like an angel of light despite his dark nature, he slaughters every deity in the Celestial Realm so he can rule as the One True God. Even when confronted by Tantalasia, he attempts to use his silver tongue to try to justify his actions.
  • Sealed Evil in a Duel: After the True Final Boss fight with him, Tantalasia fights him and the two turn to stone.
  • Self-Made Orphan: He kills all of the gods of the Celestial Realm, including his father Vogul.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: He claims that he used to have a good relationship with Tantalasia and the developer's official website states that he worked with his father to create humanity, with the First Men intended to be a stable form of leadership. By the present, any benevolent qualities he once had have been replaced with narcissism and spite.
  • Walking Spoiler: As the main villain and the true identity of Maultor, all his spoilers are unmarked.
  • Yandere: He claims to love Tantalasia, but that "love" is purely possessive and controlling, since he orchestrates the genocide of her worshipers in order to spite her for spending more time guiding her mortals than being with him.

    Tantalasia
The goddess of light.
  • Big Good: Of all the deities, she's the most active in trying to stop Maultor aka her brother Malviticus. She eventually possesses Laeni's body in order to directly help the party.
  • The Chooser of the One: She bestowed a set of armor to Arthur Greyhem to aid in his eventual rebellion against Validus. Before that, she originally chose Olto as her champion, who would aid Arthur into taking up his role.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She crosses weapons with Malviticus, turning both to stone and preventing him from being a threat to the world.
  • Symbiotic Possession: She possesses Laeni after the latter is sent forward in time, but allows the latter to keep her personality while they work towards the mutual goal of defeating Malviticus. After the True Final Boss fight, she fully takes over Laeni's body with the latter's permission in order to seal herself and Malviticus.
