Characters in The Graystone Saga
Tobiah
The narrator. He's an old man now, looking back on the unbelievable adventure he experienced as a teenager.
- Audience Surrogate: At no time does Tobiah get a physical description.
- Conveniently an Orphan
- Replacement Goldfish: Apparently he's one of these to Lady Gray, although he has yet to understand just who it is he's replacing.
- Ship Tease: With Selje.
Lady Gray
The ostensible heroine of the story, with a murky past and possibly an even darker future.
- Church Militant: Of a sort, although it's not entirely clear exactly how - or why.
- Color Motif: Unsurprisingly, her signature color is gray.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Much of it hasn't been brought to light yet, but it's pretty well understood that she's got one of these.
- Dark Is Not Evil: Despite her coloring, attire, and reputation, Lady Gray is actually a pretty nice person - but she's also an Iron Woobie, so most people don't realize it. Most often she comes across as an Emotionless Girl.
- Doom Magnet: Or at least she'd have you think so.
- Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
- Hero with Bad Publicity: Despite the reason for her noble quest, Lady Gray is feared, if not downright loathed, by most of the population of the entire continent.
- Nice to the Waiter: She is unfailingly polite to just about anyone, though she also has a tendency to get snarky if they don't return the politeness.
- Older Than They Look: She looks to be about 28. Her exact age has not yet been revealed in the narrative, but there are hints that it's rather up there.Father Matthias: I hope that by the time I'm your age, I'm a little wiser.Lady Gray: By the time you're my age, your bones will have turned to dust.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Very few people know that Lady Gray's real name is Liadan.
- Meaningful Name: In a combination of this and Bilingual Bonus, 'Liadan' is Irish Gaelic for "gray lady." That's right, her full name is technically Lady Gray Lady Gray. Except that now it's been revealed that Lady Gray isn't her name...
Sabastian
Lady Gray's constant companion is generally a grouch, but devoted to her.
- Bodyguarding a Badass: Lady Gray doesn't really need Sabastian to protect her, but he considers it his job anyway, not least because of a Bodyguard Crush.
- Bow and Sword in Accord: Until he insists that Tobiah start using one of them, Sabastian carries both a longbow and a sword.
- Deadpan Snarker: At times.
- Enigmatic Minion: Sabastian fits many aspects of this trope, except that he's not a villain... we think.
- Friend to All Living Things: Sabastian's not the most pleasant person you'll ever meet, but he's extremely fond of animals and takes very good care of his and Lady Gray's horses.
- Green-Eyed Monster: The primary reason Sabastian is so unpleasant to Tobiah is because he's jealous of any possible rival for Lady Gray's affection.
- Hopeless Suitor: He has shades of this trope, having been in love with Lady Gray for years and refusing to leave her despite her repeated insistence that they can't ever be together.
- I Owe You My Life: He's been following Lady Gray ever since she saved his life some twenty years before the start of the story.
- The Quiet One: He isn't much of a talker, even when Tobiah asks direct questions.
