    Cyrus the Restless

Cyrus the Restless (a.k.a Sura)

Cyrus in combat with Admiral Richton

"Where's the money in that?"

A Redguard born into a noble Crown family in Hammerfell, Cyrus only dreamed of becoming a pirate. After killing his brother-in-law in a duel to the death in defense of his sister, Cyrus fled and joined a pirate/mercenary crew, for whom he worked for several years. However, he received a letter stating that his sister had disappeared on the island of Stros M'Kai. During his quest to rescue her, Cyrus unintentionally became the leader of the Hammerfell Rebellion against the corrupt Imperial governor of Stros M'Kai. He is believed to be an incarnation of the Hoon Ding, the Redguard "Make Way" god who manifests whenever the Redguard people need a place to live.

He is the main character of the spin-off game The Elder Scrolls Aventures - Redguard. Cyrus is also a main character in the "Obscure Texts" Lord Vivec's Sword-Meeting With Cyrus the Restless and Tiber Septim’s Sword-Meeting with Cyrus the Restlessnote

  • Badass Normal: Compared to the various sorcerers and monsters (including a dragon) that he faced, he was a simple pirate swordsman. With Cyrus believed to have been an incarnation of the HoonDing, he was possibly a divinely Empowered Badass Normal instead.
  • Cool Sword: Wielded the Soul Sword for a time. It was a sentient longsword housing the soul of the Crown Prince of Hammerfell, Prince A'tor.
  • Cool Versus Awesome:
    • In the Obscure Text Lord Vivec's Sword-Meeting with Cyrus the Restless, Cyrus, as the Hoon Ding, has a battle with the Dunmeri Physical God Vivec. In it, after being badly defeated once, Cyrus returns and claims he can use the Pankratosword in order to get Vivec to hand over a valuable treasure. (It's a bluff, but it works.)
    • In Redguard, he slays a dragon, defeats a Sload necromancer, and matches wits with a Daedric Prince.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Every other word that comes out of his mouth is overflowing with snark.
  • Did You Just Scam Cthulhu?: Convinced Vivec that he knew the "pankratosword" technique and was willing to use it, in order to get Vivec to cough up a valuable treasure. (It was a bluff, but it worked.)
  • Duel to the Death: After his brother-in-law, Hakan, drunkenly struck his sister, Iszara, Cyrus battled him in a duel to the death. Cyrus slew Hakan, but a Crown killing a Forebear (violently opposed Redguard political factions) inflamed both sides, forcing Cyrus to flee.
  • Forced Transformation: Was turned into a Gremlin for a brief time.
  • God in Human Form: Cyrus is believed to have been an incarnation of the HoonDing, and perhaps the most famous one at that.
  • Guile Hero: He relied on his wits and being clever in order to accomplish his many feats.
  • Knights and Knaves: Clavicus Vile, essentially the Daedric Prince of Deals With the Devil, poses this riddle to Cyrus. Vile was Genre Savvy enough to ask if Cyrus had a classical education first, knowing it wouldn't be much of a riddle if Cyrus had heard it before.
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: Came back to Hammerfell to find his missing sister, but wound up starting and leading their rebellion with great success. They would have named him King of the Redguards afterward, but he turned them down.
  • Only in It for the Money: Cyrus' primary modus operandi is acquiring wealth and treasure, which, as a pirate, makes a lot of sense. He only got involved in the events of the Stros M'Kai uprising because it was made personal when his sister went missing.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: A rare aversion for Elder Scrolls protagonists.
  • Physical God: He is believed to have been a manifestation of the Hoon Ding, the Redguard "Make Way" god.
  • Pirate: Had dreamed of being once since he was a boy, and got the chance when he needed to go into hiding after he killed his brother-in-law in a duel.
  • Walking the Earth: Would have been named King by the Redguards, but he turned them down to do this.

    Nafaalilargus

Nafaalilargus (a.k.a. Nahfahlaar)

Painting of Nafaalilargus during the battle of Hunding Bay

"I am Tiber Septim's proud soldier, loyal vassal, a jewel of the crown. It's not my fault I have to keep company with the Governor."

Nafaalilargus (believed to be a Cyrodiilicized version of his three syllabic draconic name), was a red dragon who was known to ally himself with mortals. For this reason, he was spared by the Blades in the 1st Era and would eventually find his way into the employ of Tiber Septim. He was the "secret weapon" of the Imperial forces during the Battle of Hunding Bay, where their victory brought Hammerfell into the empire. He was assigned to bolster the Imperial presence on the strategically important island of Stros M'Kai, where he was slain by Cyrus the Restless.

  • Always Chaotic Evil: Averted. He managed to overcome his draconic nature and would ally with worthy mortals.
  • The Bus Came Back: He reappears in The Elder Scrolls Online DLC Dragonhold, under his Dovah name Nahfahlaar, and can assist in several quests, since ESO takes place 300 years before his death during Redguard.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Almost single-handedly won the Battle of Hunding Bay for the Imperial forces, using his fire attacks to sink much of the Redguard fleet.
  • Death Is Cheap: Because his soul wasn't absorbed by a another dragon or Dragonborn, he could theoretically be revived.
  • Dragon Hoard: Subverted. He was assigned to guard the treasury beneath the palace of Stros M'Kai, but it was an Imperial treasure hoard, not his own.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Many of his traits, including his very name, do not match the dragon lore later established in Skyrim. Some attempts were made in Skyrim to Retcon him to make him fit. However, his posture as a Wyvern-type dragon matches the Skyrim dragons perfectly.
  • Meaningful Name: Possibly. The "-gus" in the Cyrodiilicized form of his name remains untranslated, but the rest (along with his traditional three-syllable draconic name) roughly translates to "Fury For The Servant" or something similar. Fitting for a dragon who frequently allied himself with mortals. Bethesda released what would be the true translation of Nahfahlaar as Fury For Water, which is also appropriate, since he single-handedly turned the Battle of Hunding Bay in favor of the Imperials by sinking Prince A'tor's ship.
  • Sparing the Aces: The Blades opted to spare him due to his alliances with mortals. This was fortunate, as he would later come into the service of Tiber Septim.

    N'Gasta

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ngasta.jpg
N'Gasta as seen in Redguard

"No trust dark Worm N'Gasta. Powerful, yes, is N'Gasta — But wicked. Soulstealer. Old and evil."

A Sload necromancer who lived during the 2nd Era on his own island near Stros M'Kai, where he set up a soul snare to trap the souls of the island's inhabitants. He authored the book "N'Gasta! Kvata! Kvakis!" which is apparently the preeminent book on necromancy, even centuries after his death. He was a noted servant of the Daedric Prince Clavicus Vile and Mannimarco, King of Worms.

  • Affably Evil: He's quite polite to Cyrus through most of their conversations.
  • Anti-Magic: Is defeated by Cyrus the Restless using the Flask of Lillandril, which blocks N'Gasta's magic and even sends it back at him.
  • Cypher Language: His book, "N'Gasta! Kvata! Kvakis!", is a cypher in slightly altered Esperanto of all things.
  • False Reassurance: N'Gasta doesn't exactly lie to Cyrus about the state of his sister, but at the end of their conversation, Cyrus leaves with no clue that Iszara made a Deal with the Devil with N'Gasta, that her body remains preserved in his tower, or that N'Gasta gave her soul to Clavicus Vile. If Cyrus doesn't initially take the delivery quest from Kotaro, though, N'Gasta's "solemn oath to reveal the full sum of his wisdoms" doesn't amount to much.
  • Lack of Empathy: As with all Sload. He experiences no emotion, and feels nothing for those affected by his necromantic experiments. He even compares the souls he has captured to gold coins in a pouch.
  • Necromancer: One of the most infamous of the 2nd Era, with a particular interest in souls.
  • Teleport Spam: Uses this in his battle with Cyrus.
  • Third-Person Person: Referred to himself as "this one" in conversation.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Set up a soul snare on the island of Stros M'Kai which captures the souls of anyone who dies there. He used the souls for his experiments, with no regard or pity for those captured.
