The Apprentice (Josian Kaid/Vatasha Trenelle)

"In 3E 398, the Apprentice was placed second in a competition to determine the next pupils of the Battlespire, and was sent to the citadel..."
Intro to Battlespire

A prospective new pupil of the Shadow Legion, the Apprentice was sent to the Imperial Battlespire, the training ground of the Imperial Battlemages located in the Slipstream between Mundus and Oblivion. Upon arrival, they discover that the Battlespire had been taken over by the Daedric forces of Mehrunes Dagon and that their partner was captured. Fighting through the Battlespire, the Apprentice would banish Dagon back to Oblivion and rescue their partner. However, the Battlespire would be destroyed in the process and its link to Oblivion severed.

  • Bittersweet Ending: Successfully defeats the Daedric hordes and banishes Mehrunes Dagon, but the Battlespire itself is shattered and its connection with Oblivion is severed.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Defeated hordes of Daedra and then banished Mehrunes Dagon himself back to Oblivion.
  • Dimensional Traveler: Travels through many realms of Oblivion in order to defeat the Daedric forces including the Soul Cairn, Shade Perilous, the Chimera of Desolation, and the Havok Wellhead.
  • Elites Are More Glamorous: Was training to become a member of the Shadow Legion, an elite division within the Imperial Battlemages.
  • I Know Your True Name: Is able to banish Mehrunes Dagon in part by using Dagon's "protonymic" name. It is stated that all Daedra have both a neonymic and a protonymic name. The neonymic is their true name that they can change. It holds a certain amount of power, but is hard to use against them because they can change it at any time. However, the protonymic is their true name that they cannot change.
  • It's Personal: It's bad enough that Mehrunes Dagon has taken over the Battlespire, but he has also captured The Apprentice's partner.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Generally referred to as "The Apprentice" or "Hero of the Battlespire," but unlike most examples of Elder Scrolls protagonists, they do get a canon name depending on their gender.
  • Static Role, Exchangeable Character: The story is the same whether you choose to play as Josian (male) or Vatasha (female). The only difference is that you are now rescuing the one you did not choose to play as.
  • Wizarding School: The Battlespire was used as a training ground for Imperial Battlemages. They are supposed to be a new recruit there, but instead find themselves having to stop a Daedric invasion and save their partner.
