Drake's Family

    Lloyd Aurion
A noble from Vale and the true son of Kratos Aurion, Lloyd came across a young Drake Aurion when both were very young. Taking pity on the boy, Lloyd decided to take him in and his father decided to make Drake an official member of the family. From that point forward both Lloyd and Drake made it their main mission to protect each other and keep each other safe. Almost two years before the story begins, Lloyd was murdered during a raid on their home, leaving Drake scarred both physically and mentally.

It’s later revealed that his father, Kratos Aurion, was one of Mithos’s four trusted comrades and the Seraph of Knights. 4000 years ago, Rem, the Spirit of Light, was sealed away in Kratos. Centuries later, Lloyd was born to inherit his father’s position as the Ultimate Knight in the battle against the Ultimate Monster: Drake Aurion.

While he may not be present in the story, he plays a big part in many of Drake's flashbacks and serves as Drake's conscience.

  • All-Loving Hero: Lloyd always tried to see the best in everyone, even if they don’t deserve it and is much more forgiving than Drake.
  • Animal Motif: Tigers.
  • Badass Family: His father, Kratos Aurion, is considered a legend among Huntsmen.
  • Berserk Button: Badmouthing or hurting his brother, Drake, in any capacity is guaranteed to makes a usually genial and friendly Lloyd to unleash his inner fury.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He might have been the nicer brother, but Lloyd was in every way as dangerous as Drake.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Played Straight with Drake. Lloyd seemed to bond with him the moment they met, wanting to make sure Drake could learn to move on from the family he never knew by doing everything he could to make him feel welcome.
    • It has also been inverted with Drake on occasion. It becomes clear that for all their arguments, there was nothing Drake wouldn't do in the name of Lloyd.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Drake is the blonde, Lloyd is the brunette, and Zelos is the redhead.
  • Book Dumb: While Lloyd didn't know much in terms of pure information, he possessed plenty of raw intelligence, is a savant at weapon crafting, and can be surprisingly clever at times.
  • Broken Hero: Despite going through his share of trauma and tragedy, Lloyd kept fighting and believing there was hope in the end.
  • The Conscience: To Drake. Lloyd has mentored Drake using the "Ways of Life", which Drake has since taken to heart (most of the time).
  • The Fettered: While Lloyd accepted the fact that the world can be a cruel place, he has a strong conscience, a personal moral code and will always do what’s right. This was apparent when he refused to take revenge against the White Fang despite them murdering his girlfriend, Colette.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Lloyd's mother is revealed to have been a faunus, while his father, Kratos, a human.
  • Hot-Blooded: Very much so. While he has shown to be the more pleasant one when compared to Drake, he is considerably more hotheaded and impulsive.
  • I Let Gwen Stacy Die: His girlfriend, Colette, was tragically murdered before he could do anything about it.
  • Ideal Hero: Lloyd was presented as a highly moral, noble, idealistic, empathetic and compassionate individual. This was in contrast to Drake, who is more anti-hero in nature; aloof, roguish, cynical and sarcastic.
  • The Idealist: He always tried to see the lighter side of the world and hopes for the best of things, in stark contrast to Drake's cynical realism.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Drake. Back when he was alive, Drake was a jerk, but had a softer side to him. Without him, he becomes ruthless, vengeful and even suicidal.
  • Love Hurts: He tragically lost Colette when the White Fang killed her.
  • Missing Mom: Lloyd's mother died shortly after he was born. Therefore, Lloyd never knew his mother growing up and never had a mother figure in his life.
  • Morality Pet: To Drake. Drake is normally a very pragmatic Anti-Hero with a dark mentality. Lloyd was usually the one to propose a more moral and idealistic approach and his memory serves as Drake's moral compass.
  • Nice Guy: Lloyd was a generally nice, kind and sensitive guy who cared about helping everyone.
  • Posthumous Character: Lloyd has been dead for over a year-and-a-half by the start of the story, but he still plays a very important role in most of Drake's flashbacks.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: To Drake. The differences between them are very hard to miss. Whereas Lloyd is more friendly, hot-headed and idealistic, Drake is more aloof, cynical and patient.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Lloyd is physically fit, handsome and tall.
  • Undying Loyalty: To Drake. Even though the two had been through the ups and downs more than they can count, there is no doubt that Lloyd was completely devoted to his brother.

    Kratos Aurion
Lloyd’s and Drake’s father, Kratos raised his sons to be Artes Users so that they’d be able to take care of themselves and make a difference in the world. He is considered by many to be a great Huntsman, but is also a deeply flawed person and father.

Kratos is revealed to be one of Mithos three companions from four thousand years ago, alongside his close friend, Yuan Ka-Fei, and his foster brother, Zu Aurion, Drake’s biological father.

  • The Ace: Kratos is a skilled and powerful Huntsman who is always involved in action. He was originally one of Mithos most trusted companions during the great war 4000 years ago and is still one of Vale’s most respected Huntsmen to date, earning him the title, “The Traitor from the Heavens”.
  • Action Dad / Badass Teacher: Kratos is a skilled and exceptionally powerful Huntsman, considered by many to be a legend. He was originally involved in a quest to end a never-ending war between two kingdoms over 4000 years ago. Everything Drake, Lloyd and Zelos learned about fighting, they learned from him.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: He doesn't show the true depths of his affection for his sons very often, but it's been made clear that he cares for Drake and Lloyd dearly.
  • Broken Pedestal: Drake went from seeing Kratos as one of his heroes, to showing open resentment for lying to him all his life. Drake still loves and respects his adoptive father, but is not pleased with his shortcomings.
  • The Dreaded: Given the Training from Hell he endured under his tutelage, combined with his power, skill and authority, Drake is understandably terrified of his father's wrath and makes a point to not anger him.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Kratos has faced much tragedy, pain and loss in his time.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He was a very strict teacher to both Drake and Lloyd when they were young, but it’s clear that he thinks the for the two of them, having their well-being serve as his primary motivation.
  • Like Father, Like Son: While Drake is not his own flesh and blood, he has shown to take after Kratos more than Lloyd, Kratos’s actual son. Both have experienced pain and loss during their lives and are known for their ruthless efficiency.
  • Love Hurts: He was forced to kill his own wife when she transformed into a hideous monster known as an IT.
  • Mercy Kill: What he did to his wife, Anna, after she became an IT.
  • Older Than They Look: MUCH older. Despite appearing to be in his 30s, he is actually over 4000 years old.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His biological son, Lloyd, was murdered.
  • Papa Wolf: Threatening either of his sons is never a smart move.
  • Put on the Bus: Kratos and Yuan are seen together in the epilogue to the Recap Chapters fighting two mysterious adversaries. The following chapter, they are confirmed missing.
  • The Stoic: Kratos is the sort of man who lets his actions communicate more than his face.
  • Training from Hell: He subjected (at least) Drake to this, to the extent that the very mention of his name makes Drake flinch.

     Colette Brunel
A mute young girl who became acquainted with Drake, Lloyd and Zelos when they were 10. After saving her from her abusive hometown, Drake and Lloyd decided to make her an honorary member of the family.

Colette was killed during a White Fang raid that became known as the Bloody Winter, which is what sparked Drake’s undying hatred for the White Fang.

It’s later revealed that Colette was part of a secret operation, Project Chosen, designed to create an army using the blood of the original heroes of Remnant from 4000 years ago, which rendered her mute. The project was classified as a failure, however, because while Colette had inherited the desired traits, she was unable to use her abilities for combat purposes and could only repel the creatures of Grimm and heal injuries.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: While not given a lot of focus, Colette was the only person aside from Kratos who could intimidate Drake into cooperating, and could be quite forceful when the situation demanded it.
  • Cute Clumsy Girl: She had a habit of tripping and falling most of the time, but mostly to her advantage.
  • Cute Mute: Literally. She’s an adorably precious girl without the ability to talk.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Aside from being experimented on as a child in a project that rendered her mute, Colette was forced to live in an isolated village on the outskirts of Vale where she was constantly abused and mistreated by its residence, using her a means of keeping their homes safe from the Grimm.
  • Death by Origin Story: While both Drake and Lloyd were devastated by her death, Drake seemed to take it exceptionally hard, as she’s the first loved one he’s ever lost to the White Fang, giving him an actual emotional investment for his hatred towards them.
  • Ear Ache: She usually dealt with Drake by pulling him by the ear.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: She’s described as sweet, innocent, young and kind with beautiful golden hair.
  • Kill the Cutie: Dr. Oobleck’s reaction says it all.
    “Oh my…”
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Drake. The two of them were very close, but despite his grief over Colette's death, Drake viewed her as a sister and had no strong feelings for her.
  • Posthumous Character: While not as big as Lloyd’s, her death serves as the reason Drake hates the White Fang.
  • Ship Tease: It was obvious that she and Lloyd had something very close going on between them. But tragedy intervened before anything could be pursued.

Nobles of Remnant

A group of Nobles whom Drake befriended over the years. They are all fiercely loyal to one another as a Band of Brothers.

    As a Whole
  • Badass Crew:
  • Dysfunction Junction: Nearly every one of them has something dark or messed up in their past.
    • Yuri is a child soldier forced to become a General at a young age.
    • Flynn's father was murdered during a White Fang raid and has witnessed multiple White Fang crimes.
    • Jude’s mother died in a fire caused by Faunus haters and watched the clinic burn down.
    • Luke’s entire life is a fabricated lie, seeing how he’s only a clone.
    • Guy’s entire family was slaughtered, leaving him pinned underneath a pile of dead bodies in a burning building.

     Yuri Lowell
A noble from Mistral and one of Drake's circle of friends. His father, Lycaon Lowell, was the general of the Imperial Knights. After his father's death, Yuri was to be appointed their new general. While he is a talented fighter, he is easygoing, rude and somewhat lazy. He is in a pact (and a relationship0 with Celsius, the Summon Spirit of Ice.
  • Age Lift: Initially 21 in Tales of Vesperia, Yuri is brought down to his teens.
  • Animal Motif: His last name means "Wolf", the same animal that serves as his emblem.
  • Anti-Hero: Much like Drake, Yuri is willing to kill when the moment demands it and is willing to take the law into his own hands.
  • Badass Biker: He had a bike. But it was destroyed during the Breach of Vale, thanks to Coco.
  • Badass Boast: "You don't understand, do you? I’m not the one locked in with you. You're locked in with us!"
  • Big Brother Mentor: To his adopted brother, Jude. Despite him being a faunus, Yuri stuck up for him and treated him fairly.
  • Blood Knight: Literally. Not only does he enjoy fighting, his weapon becomes more powerful when it comes into contact with blood and creatures of Grimm. Exaggerated when it makes contact with his own blood.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Yuri is a very talented fighter and leader, but comes off as an unmotivated, easy-going slacker most of the time.
  • Brutal Honesty: Yuri never sugarcoats his words. Ever. Regardless of who you are, Yuri will be as blunt as he wants.
  • Child Soldier: More like Child General.
  • The Cynic: After Drake, Yuri is easily the second most cynical of the group.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: While he is Tall, Dark, and Snarky, he is actually a friendly guy who enjoys helping people. Just don't do anything evil in front of him.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Yuri is well known for his rude and sarcastic wit.
  • The Gadfly: Yuri enjoys teasing people and pulling pranks, seeing how he rigged Zelos' closet with a boxing glove to the lower-zone.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: His personal weapon, Abysson, gets more powerful the more it comes into contact with blood and Grimm flesh.
  • Tall, Dark, and Snarky: Yuri pretty much embodies this trope.

     Flynn Scifo
A noble of Mistral and Yuri's best friend. His father, Guren Scifo, was Lycaon Lowell's assistant General and was killed during a White Fang raid. He is in a pact with Aska, the Summon Spirit of light.
  • The Ace: Drake considers him the strongest of his friends.
  • Age Lift: Initially 21 in Vesperia, Flynn is now 17.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: With Yuri.
  • Barrier Warrior: As a testament to his will to protect others, Flynn’s semblance grants him the ability to create nigh-impervious barriers.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Flynn is honestly one of the nicest characters in the group, but is still a deadly fighter.
  • Combat Medic: Flynn is more of a fighter than a healer, he still knows several healing artes.
  • Covert Pervert: He has to deal with a lot of sexual tension with Pronyma
  • Childhood Friends / Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Yuri.
  • Choice of Two Weapons: His sword and shield.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: Flynn almost never swears. When he does, it means serious business.
  • Humble Hero: Very, to the point he gets embarrassed when he’s referred to as one of the strongest of Drake’s friends.
  • Lethal Chef: Zig-Zagged. His cooking is described as roulette by Drake and Yuri. It can either be the best thing you’ve ever tasted, or the biggest mistake you ever make.
  • Martial Pacifist: Flynn doesn’t like fighting when he can avoid it, but can be a serious adversary when the gloves are off.
  • Nice Guy: He’s the most soft-spoken and outwardly kind of Drake’s brotherhood of friends.
  • This Means War!: He declares this on Ozpin after learning how he’d been trying to manipulate Drake into the “ideal huntsman”.

    Luke Fon Fabre
A hotheaded noble from Vacuo. He is currently in a pact with Volt, the Summon Spirit of Lighting and Electricity.
  • The Ace: Inverted. Luke is the weakest of the Nobles, mostly due to his debilitating condition and his lack of experience.
  • Animal Motif: Lions.
  • Berserk Button: While he’s impatient and easily frustrated, never, ever call him “Asch”.
  • Fiery Redhead: Luke is easily the most hot-headed and immature of the nobles.
  • Good Samaritan: He’s referred to as such by Hubert, seeing how he’s a strong supporter of Faunus rights and runs numerous charities.
  • Handicapped Badass: He suffers from a debilitating chronic illness and is one of the weakest of the nobles, but is still a capable fighter.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He can be impatient and quick to anger, but he clearly thinks the world of his friends.
  • Manchild: His patience and maturity can be questionable at times. It’s eventually justified, seeing how he’s actually seven years old.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to Guy's blue.
  • Younger Than They Look: As a clone of Asch the Bloody, Luke is actually seven years old, but appears to be in his teens.

     Guy Cecil
The oldest of Drake's friends and a vassal to Luke. He tries to be the voice of reason to his companions.

    Jude Mathis
A young wolf faunus who studies to become a medic. He was unofficially adopted into the Lowell household after his mother was tragically lost in a fire caused by a group of Faunus haters. He has formed a bond with Sylph, the Summon Spirit of the Wind and has been working with Milla Maxwell to find a way to help Drake fight off Shadow's influence. During their journey, they were confronted by a mysterious figure in a fight that robbed Jude of his eyesight.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: As a Wolf Faunus, it makes sense that Jude faced a lot of segregation and bullying.
  • Aura Vision: See, Disability Superpower.
  • Badass Pacifist: Jude really doesn’t want to hurt anyone; he’s a doctor and it violates his Hippocratic Oath. However, he has proven to be no slouch in combat when the situation demands it.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Among the other Nobles, Jude is the most skilled at Hand-To-Hand combat.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He may be a pacifist and a bit of a pushover, but he’s not someone you want to take advantage of or provoke.
  • Breakout Character: He’s the main protagonist of the Tales of Fate spinoff fic, The Blind Wolf.
  • Combat Medic: Jude is the opposite of Flynn, being a medic first, and a fighter second.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Jude and his mother were doctors who did not discriminate with their patients. Humans, Faunus, even the White Fang were regulars. The whole thing went full circle when the clinic was burned to the ground by a group of Faunus haters. In order to save her son, Jude’s mother pushed him out of the second story window just as the building collapsed, killing her in the fire. All Jude could do was watch.
  • Disability Superpower: The loss of his eyesight actually enhanced Jude’s semblance, granting him the ability to see the aura of any living specimen, ranging from humans, animals, even nature.
  • Eye Scream: Whatever blinded him left his eyes completely white with the area surrounding them dry, chipped and grey.
  • Handicapped Badass: Jude may be blind, but his semblance has become even more powerful as a result and is strong enough to overpower Glynda Goodwitch.
  • Happily Adopted: He was adopted, albeit not officially, into the Lowell family. He was treated fairly and grew close to Yuri.
  • Hero of Another Story: He’s the main protagonist of a spin-off story, The Blind Wolf, which takes place during the Cruxis arc.
  • Likes Older Women: It's been noted that Jude seems to like girls who are a few years older than him. Taken a bit further with Mila, who is at least a few centuries his senior.
  • Nice Guy: Many of his friends have insisted that he can be a little “too nice” at times.
  • Martial Pacifist: There are a lot of people Jude can never forgive: humans and faunus alike. However, as much as he can’t forgive them, he still refuses to kill them.
  • Samaritan Syndrome: Jude has stated that he can’t just sit by idly when someone needs help.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: He became a doctor to save lives, not take them. Plain and simple. However, there’s also the fact he made a similar promise to his mother before she died. If he went back on his word, he’d only be hurting her memory. The only exception are the Grimm, seeing how they have no souls.
  • Token Minority: He’s the only Noble who happens to be a Faunus.

Others

    Lee
A local bartender who runs“The Tree of Life” in Vale. He became acquainted with Drake shortly after Lloyd’s death and became his personal informant. While he appears to be a simple bartender, Lee’s actual identity is a bit of a mystery.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Several.
    • Lee claims to be a local bartender and nothing more. However, he seems to know almost everything going on, even beyond Vale. He even knows Cinder Fall’s name, her associates and the person she’s working for. And when Cinder confronts him about it, she immediately found herself in a trash container.
    • When Cinder asks whose side Lee is on, he replies that what’s happening is bigger than either party can realize and that he’s only interested in seeing how Drake handles it all.
  • The Bartender: He serves drinks to the citizens of Vale, be they lowlifes, drunks, or everyday citizens.
  • The Confidant: Comes with the job, but he seems to take it the most seriously with Drake.
  • Crazy-Prepared: The door to his bar is rigged to deliver a painful shock to anyone who tries to break in. Yang learns that the hard way.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu??: He unflinchingly calls off Cinder Fall when she comes asking for information on Drake and his friends. When Cinder is about to confront him about it, she immediately finds herself in a trash container.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: At his worst. He may not be very friendly to Team RWBY at times, but it’s clear that behind it all, he cares about his clientele and treats Drake well.
  • Knowledge Broker: He has a lot of information on a lot of people for a simple bartender. He even has dirt on Team RWBY, with the exception of Ruby, seeing how she’s the youngest and doesn’t have much of a record beyond skipping two years to go to Beacon.
  • Parental Substitute: He acts as something reminiscent of this to Drake when it comes to helping his investigations.
  • Quest Giver: Over the past year, he offered Drake info regarding Remiel in exchange for completed bounties and odd-jobs.
  • Shipper on Deck: He seems to approve of Drake’s relationship with Yang. At least somewhat.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: When dealing with Drake and his friends, he’s pretty amiable guy. But when dealing with strangers or troublemakers like Team RWBY, he can be quite harsh.
  • Undying Loyalty: He seems to have this towards Drake, although it could be part of his oath as his personal information broker. That said, it’s clear that he cares for Drake’s well being.
