2nd Division Mobile Disaster Response Corps / S.O.N.G. (Squad Of Nexus Guardians)

    Miku Kohinata

    Genjuro Kazanari
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ch_genjuro.png
Voiced by: Hideo Ishikawa

Tsubasa's uncle and leader of the 2nd Division Mobile Disaster Response Corps, an organization dedicated to fighting the Noise. A Hot-Blooded man with insane physical strength which appears to have come from watching action movies. He cares deeply for the Symphogear users and is Hibiki's martial arts teacher as well as Chris's guardian. Revealed in GX to actually be Tsubasa's half-brother, though whether or not Genjuro himself knows this is unknown.

  • Badass Normal: All of his ridiculous strength comes from nothing but pure physical training. Unfortunately, touching a Noise would still kill him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Twice—once for Hibiki, the other time for Chris.
  • Big Good: At 194 cm or just over 6'4" tall, he's the tallest character in the series, as well as the highest authority figure to the Symphogear users.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: His actual ability. His punches and kicks are so strong that they shatter the ground, and even make cracks in Finé's Nehushtan armor. The man is able to step in on a fight between Symphogear users and stop them! Not only that. He nearly defeats Finé!
    • In AXZ he also takes on all of the Symphogears as part of a training session and wipes the floor with them.
  • Conflict Killer: Stops Tsubasa from fighting Hibiki by punching a BFS.
  • Cool Uncle: To Tsubasa.
  • Eccentric Mentor:
    • Genjuro teaches Hibiki his unnamed, super-powered Secret Art after she proves unable to bring out her Armed Gear in episode four. Part of the training involves watching action movies and doing forms in cosplay.
    • Later in G, when he gives the trio another special training, he sings. And in Chinese! While Hibiki is willing to sing with him, Chris wonders if he's fine with his brain.
  • Fiery Redhead: He's big, he's hammy, and he likes to train. Naturally, Chris just can't stand him, initially.
  • Glass Cannon: Though extraordinarily strong, fast, and dextrous, he is still only a human and therefore lacks the protective abilities of the Symphogears. A stabbing attack that likely wouldn't inconvenience his charges was almost fatal to him. This also makes him completely useless against Noise, which disintegrates unprotected humans on contact.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: Episode 9 of G has Genjuro and Hibiki performing a cover of the opening theme to Jackie Chan's Police Story, in its original language, Cantonese.
  • Hot-Blooded:
    • Watch a man teach martial arts to a girl with lines like "Your fists ought to fly like hammers that hit the thunder of the bolt that strucks you!" and the Hot-Blooded girl responds "I didn't understand a word of that, but I'll try!".
    • At the end of the Training Montage in G, Chris says to herself that those two are too hot.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Genjuro's idea of training includes watching action movies and playing fighting games, and trying to copy main characters' moves... while being dressed like them. It includes trying to teach Hibiki Hadouken, by having them both dressed as Makoto and Gouki/Akuma. All of this set to a Badass Rocky-like theme.
  • Image Song: Two in G. Eiyū Kōji is a cover of the opening theme of Police Story, which he performs with Hibiki. His version of Genchaku! Denkō Keiji Ban is a cover of Yumi, Shiori, and Kuriyo's song, which is from an anime parody.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: By Finé; thankfully he survives.
  • In a Single Bound: He can jump from the ground to the top of a building with a single jump.
  • Inexplicably Awesome: He lacks any origin for his ridiculous strength and skill, and when asked, his answer is consistently that he watches a lot of action movies.
    • The closest we get is that the Kazanari bloodline has some near-inhuman qualities to it, when you look at his father Fudo.
  • Large and in Charge: The tallest character in the series and he commands his respective division.
  • Large Ham: He can be very dramatic, sometimes.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: The guy with the Anime Hair and pink necktie in charge of Mission Control? He can beat a Symphogear barehanded, as seen in episode 3. Later on, he also takes on Fine herself and wipes the floor with her, forcing her to resort to a cheap shot to win.
  • The Movie Buff: Action films, to be exact.
  • Mr. Exposition: Justified, since he is the leader of the research group. Otherwise, he would leave this trope to Ryoko.
  • My Greatest Failure: Being unable to be there for Chris, for whom he is her legal guardian. He does everything in his power to reach out to her, soothe her rage, and make up with her for his failure.
  • Parental Substitute: To the girls. He ain't the Team Dad for nothing.
    • More specifically, he's the legal guardian of the orphaned Chris and might be for the parent-lacking Tsubasa. Given the absence of Hibiki's family, it's lucky that his paternal instincts extend so widely.
  • Properly Paranoid: While genuinely an outgoing person, he has some reservations regarding Ryoko. The thing is, he's right.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He wears a pink tie.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's a very understanding boss.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The red to most of his agency's blue.
  • Shipper on Deck: If the first OVA is an indication, he seems to ship Hibiki and Miku together as seen during the reunion short in said OVA.
  • Shounen Hair: Has matching hair to kick asses.
  • Shout-Out:
    • To both Akuma and Bruce Lee. While training Hibiki in Season 1 Episode 4, he looks almost like the former, and sometime later during the same Training Montage, he and Hibiki wore Lee's iconic yellow-and-black jumpsuit. Come Season 1 Episode 8 he uses fighting moves that evoke both fighters. His training methods, however, are more of a mix between old kung-fu movies (especially Drunken Master) and a certain Italian Stallion.
    • In G Episode 9, there is not only another Rocky-style Training Montage (including Tsubasa and a very unenthusiastic Chris this time!), but he actually sings the theme song of The Police Story (in Cantonese!) with Hibiki to accompany it...you'd have to be deaf to think his singing voice isn't an impersonation of Isao Sasaki.
  • Team Dad: He's a very caring person, who can stop the fight between Tsubasa and Hibiki, and comforts the broken Chris. He's also Chris's legal guardian and Hibiki's sensei in terms of martial arts.
  • Throwing Down the Gauntlet: Genjuro doesn't usually fight women, but he'll do an exception if said woman wants to hurt someone under his protection.
  • Unusual Eyebrows: Of the forked kind, matching his fiery personality.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Genjurou is a gentleman, but he makes an exception for villains.

XDU

  • Adaptational Wimp: Sort of. Genjuro in Kanade's parallel-verse isn't into action movies thus he can't perform superhuman level feats as his prime counterpart can. Genjuro is surprised when Hibiki mentions how crazy powerful his other self is.
  • Took a Level in Badass: And yes, he can. The only thing that stops him from Curb-Stomp Battle anything in the main series is that he lacks the ability to fight the Noise. In XDU one of his parallel-verse gains access to a special gauntlet which used a sort of modified Symphogear technology invented by Fine due to the lack of Symphogear users in this world. It's generated a Battle Aura make him able to fight Noise. He Curb-Stomp them as you can be expected. However, the gauntlet can only last in a short span of time and required some time to recharge its power before able to use it again.

    Shinji Ogawa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ch_ogawa.png
Voiced by: Soichiro Hoshi

An agent of the 2nd Division who also acts as Tsubasa's manager for her idol cover. He's also a highly-skilled ninja.

  • Badass Family: The final season reveals that he's part of his own clan, the Ogawas, who have many family members spread across the globe, all of them having a variety of capable skillsets.
  • Badass Normal: Not as much as Genjuro, but he has his moments. Suddenly shows it off extensively in episode 9 of G (see below), showcasing that he may be more powerful than he looks.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: He always wears a black suit and he shows some action while wearing it.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Had shades of this towards Hibiki in the earlier parts of Season 1. Arguably, he is this to Tsubasa, being very supportive and loyal to her, and showing concern for her well-being. The fact that he taught Tsubasa at least one of his ninja techniques helps.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Is in the nick of time to save Miku from a Noise ambush in Episode 10 of season 1.
  • Bridal Carry: In episode 9 of G, he carries Shirabe like this when he rescues her from the battlefield.
  • Drives Like Crazy: We usually don't see how he drives, but he drives his car at the speed of the plot, just in time to save Hibiki and the rest of her classmates and he parked while spinning around twice or thrice at high speed. Normal people wouldn't even survive such driving, but because he lives in a World of Badass, his passenger, Maria, is completely unaffected by that kind of crazy driving.
  • Excuse Me While I Multitask: In episode 3 of G, Ogawa decides to report back to headquarters while surrounded by a gang of armed thugs. His tone never changes despite the battle heard in the background, and by the time the scene cuts back to him the thugs are collapsing one by one.
  • Me's a Crowd: Part of his repertoire of Ninja techniques includes the ability to produce shadow clones, which he both demonstrates and in episode 6 of XV he creates shadow clones of the Toyota Tercel he's driving to throw off Vanessa's aim.
  • Nice Guy: Has an approachable and amicable way about him, and is quick to advise Hibiki when she first joins. He also has a heroic tendency, between
  • Ninja: As revealed in supplementary notes. He can easily overpower yakuzas unarmed while making a phone call, and taught Tsubasa her Shadow Weaving Technique.
  • Right-Hand Hottie: In his cover as Tsubasa's manager.
  • Shadow Pin: Tsubasa's Shadow Weaving is actually from Ogawa, a technique that involves a thrown dagger into the opponent's shadow, disabling their movements. As shown in GX, Ogawa can even do this with bullets.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: He always wears a black suit.
  • Shipper on Deck: If the first OVA is an indication, he seems to ship Hibiki and Miku together as seen during the reunion short in said OVA.
  • The Glasses Come Off: During serious moments. It's a Character Tic.
  • The Reliable One: Most definitely. He's the one who cleans Tsubasa's room, a girl's room, despite he's a man.
  • Undying Loyalty: Maintains this towards the 2nd Division, but it extends to Tsubasa. His use of the Shadow Weaving Technique to let Tsubasa and Maria make a car getaway in the second episode of GX.
  • Walk on Water: In episode 9 of G, where he runs on water with Shirabe in his arms.

    Aoi Tomosato

Voiced by: Asami Seto

An agent of the Second Division.

    Sakuya Fujitaka
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ch_fujitaka.png
Voiced by: Kenji Akabane

Another agent of the Second Division.

  • Mission Control: His job.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: During AXZ's second episode when he's carried by Kirika and they jump off a cliff to a train below, he gives a pretty high-pitched scream.
  • Tempting Fate: In the first episode of GX, he muses to Aoi that he wishes things would stay peaceful and that no major crisis would arise until his eventual retirement. Cue an alarm for strange energy readings indicating the start of GX's plot.
  • Those Two Guys: With Aoi.
  • Two First Names: Both Sakuya and Fujitaka have been used as first names.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Aoi. He shows surprise that she bothered to get him a cup of coffee while they worked overtime.

Head Scientist of the 2nd Division MDRC and creator of the Symphogear.

    Elfnein
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ch_elfnein.png
Voiced by: Misaki Kuno

A girl who looks very similar to Carol, who is on the run from Leiur at the beginning of GX.

  • Artificial Human: Claims to be a Homunculus that Carol created to aid in the construction of the Château de Tiffauges.
  • The Atoner: She wants to protect the world to atone for her "other self", Carol, wanting to destroy everything.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: Summons an alchemic shield to protect herself from Vanessa, and summons Daurdabla to don the Faust Robe, abilities which she wasn't shown to have in the past. Subverted in that it's actually Carol doing this after taking over her body to save her.
  • Enemy Without: Inverted. Due to being an incomplete copy of Carol, she's basically a physical representation of the season 3 Big Bad before her Face–Heel Turn.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Goes through one at the end of GX. She starts inhabiting Carol's old body, so her hair is now Carol's gold hue and her bangs face the other way. AXZ shows that she's now started to braid her hair like Carol.
  • Good Costume Switch: While never truly evil, Elfnein wears a more sensible white blouse once she joins S.O.N.G.
  • In the Hood: She keeps the hood of her cloak up while running from Leiur, only taking it off to enlist Chris's help.
  • Meaningful Name: She actually follows the Tarot Motifs as well, though in a less obvious way than the Autoscorers. Her name is Gratuitous German for "no eleven" which doesn't seem to mean much until Carol's song refers to her as "the unneeded card of Justice" (the eleventh major arcana of the Rider-Waite tarot deck) in her bloody quest for revenge.
  • The Mole: Carol can see and hear everything Elfnein is currently experiencing whenever she wants. In a twist of this trope, Elfnein is horrified when she finds out about this and begs to be locked away so she doesn't cause any further harm.
  • Mysterious Waif: Has a small stature and is currently shrouded in mystery as far as her agenda and history goes.
  • No Biological Sex: The medical examination she receives from S.O.N.G. reveals this to be the case, although the cast sticks with using female pronouns for her for the lack of a better option. She also claims that such a thing is normal for homunculi like herself.
  • Our Homunculi Are Different: Explicitly called a homunculus, and as an Artificial Human created via alchemy, she certainly fits the bill.
  • Science Hero: After joining S.O.N.G., Elfnein becomes its expert in heretical technology and alchemy, doing things like giving the Symphogears access to the Ignite mode and decoding Dr. Ver's LiNKER recipes.
  • Stripperiffic: Her initial appearance has her wearing nothing but that underwear and her cloak. Lampshaded by Chris. It was revealed in a Zesshoushinai skit that her entire wardrobe was nothing but that outfit. After she joins S.O.N.G., she exchanges it for a Labcoat of Science and Medicine that is a bit too big for her.
Chris: "What happened to your clothes?!"
  • Taking the Bullet: Protects Aoi from a piece of the ceiling when Leiur's golem makes a last-ditch attack on S.O.N.G.'s submarine. She gets injured in the process but is able to recover.
  • Token Mini-Moe: She's physically the youngest and smallest person in the cast.

Kazanari Clan

    Yatsuhiro Kazanari
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yatsuhiro_concept_art.png
Voiced by: Kazuhiro Yamaji

Tsubasa's father and Genjuurou's brother, and a senior diplomat/lawyer. Tsubasa is actually his half-sister on their father's side.

  • Abusive Parents: Averted; his cold treatment of Tsubasa is his way of making it easier for her to leave the Kazanaris and pursue her dreams.
    • Tough Love: He emotionally neglected Tsubasa for years to help her, but all it seemed to do was cause Tsubasa to grow up emotionally stunted.
  • Badass Family: Is yet another addition to the prestigious Kazanaris. Unlike his relatives, however, he's shown to be experienced not in combat, but in diplomacy - he was responsible for effecting Maria's transfer to SONG and the reason overall for SONG's relative freedom and discretion when it comes to acting, despite being a UN agency.
  • Expy: His relation and role to Tsubasa are just like Kei Karasuma
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He shields Tsubasa from Fudo's bullet, saving her life and encouraging her to continue singing and protecting people before dying.
  • It Runs in the Family: Just as Tsubasa pulled a Cruel to Be Kind act on Hibiki in G, Yatsuhiro is revealed to have done something similar to Tsubasa in the past.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Averted. Since although it takes ten years of estrangement for Tsubasa to figure out why her father acts cold towards her and only with Maria's help, no one dies because of it.
  • Taking the Bullet: He shields Tsubasa from being shot by Fudo in XV Episode 9 and he pays for it with his life.

    Fudou Kazanari
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fudo_concept_art.png
Voiced by: Mugihito

The original head of Section 2, father of Yatsuhiro and Genjuro, and grandfather of Tsubasa. He's actually Tsubasa's biological father.

  • Abusive Parents: Hoo boy. Rather than name either of his sons as his heir, he impregnates his elder son's wife in the name of a "pure bloodline", resulting in Tsubasa. He's also the one responsible for Tsubasa spending much of her early life as a lab rat for Symphogear tests, and comes very close to killing her during their duel in XV.
  • Badass Normal: Has no powers of his own, no Gear, just a Charles Atlas Superpower that lets him fight Tsubasa's Ame no Habakiri on equal terms.
  • Big Bad: He's revealed to be the one controlling Noble Red in XV for his own goals and then the role is hijacked from him by Shem-Ha in Episode 9.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: After being set up in GX he arrives in a big way in AXZ and especially XV.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: He tries (key word being "tries") to take control of Shem-Ha's powers by attempting to brainwash her into being his pawn. Shem-Ha breaks out thanks to Noble Red's interference and she then proceeds to show everyone why she's the bigger threat.
  • The Dreaded: The only one to actually make the Hot-Blooded Genjuro get quiet and obviously scared and nervous. Yatsuhiro is also quite timid around him, while Tsubasa gets very quiet; though in her case she shows signs of quiet rebellion culminating, after Miku first speaks up, calling him out for the first time.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: He's an utter bastard that fully believes that songs are incapable of saving anything and that only immense power can protect things. Even as his villainous plans to acquire divine power in order to protect Japan fail time and time again to the power of songs, and even when that unleashed divine power gets defeated by said songs as well, he's still unable to understand how.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Shem-ha has a view of Humans Are Bastards but she didn't attack anyone yet when she first appeared. Thanks to Fudo's attempts to brainwash her, Shem-ha is now on the warpath and she makes her first move: reactivating the Frontier on the Moon.
  • Hate Sink: Ooh boy. Every time he appears on the screen, the audience wants nothing more than for somebody, anybody to go and punch his face in.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: Not only is Fudou a believer in this, he gladly embraces it as being correct, as he claims that only a true monster without room in their heart for anything other than their own empowerment for their own goals would have the strength needed to protect Japan.
  • Hero Killer: He ends up killing his own son Yatsuhiro in XV Episode 9 when the latter takes a bullet for Tsubasa.
  • Honor-Related Abuse: There's Tsubasa's entire childhood to look at, as well as his sons and daughter-in-law. He also treats his subordinates in SONG as "family," meaning, should he feel sufficiently "dishonored", there will be hell to pay.
  • I Have No Son!: He makes it abundantly clear the only one he sees fit to carry on his bloodline is Tsubasa and not either of his sons. The moment she turns on him, he decides that she is also not worthy, and decides to shoot her as punishment.
  • I Let You Win: Intentionally leaves himself wide open to Amalgalm Tsubasa's attack so that he can go down in history as a Protector of Japan, not unlike how Dr. Ver tried to do the same back in G to go down as a "hero", and make Tsubasa into a true "monster" worthy of protecting the nation in his place. Genjuro even makes sure he doesn't die for similar reasons, in addition to making sure Tsubasa doesn't end up going down the same road Fudou did.
  • The Irredeemable Exception: Aside from Adam Weishaupt, Fudou is the only major antagonist in the series to have no redeeming values, no character growth, and not even a small moment of decency: he remains a monstrous, absolutist old bastard to the end, insisting that all the lessers of humanity are too weak to guide their own destinies without a strong leader reigning over them with the power of gods, and that his means of "protecting Japan" were the correct ones.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: With how abhorrent a human being Fudou is from the moment of his introduction, it seems like this would be an impossible trope for him, but when he's backed into a corner in XV, he finds a way to descend to all-new depths of repugnance.
  • Karma Houdini: Not once has he ever had to face consequences for his despicable, and often illegal, actions. Until XV Episode 9, that is.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: His days as a Karma Houdini finally ran out in XV Episode 9. First, the episode sees Noble Red derailing his plans by freeing Miku/Shem-ha, thus foiling his attempts to brainwash her in order to take control of her power. Then he is defeated by Tsubasa in a fight and Genjuro stops her before she can kill him. Finally, he gets to witness the fruits of his hubris when Shem-ha reactivates the Frontier that is on the Moon, putting not just Japan but the entire world in danger once again. As a result, he's arrested and detained for his actions in Episode 10.
  • Killing Intent: The moment Genjuro and other Agents of S.O.N.G. enter the same room as him in the Kazanari Manor, he flares a massive surge of this for a split second. During his fight with Tsubasa, his aura as a whole takes the shape of an Oni Wielding a sword, as an extension of his previous flash of intent.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: When his plans go haywire, he's arrested and Shem-Ha is now left loose on the world, rather than resist, he accepts that for his own safety and the fact that he had little to no alternatives to a peaceful surrender following his defeat anyway, he has to comply with his arrest, and is last seen straight-jacketed in his prison cell, smirking as he reaffirms his belief that Japan and the world cannot be protected by songs.
  • Mole in Charge: The Stinger of Episode 3 of XV reveals that he is the one aiding the remnants of the Bavarian Illuminati in exchange for delivering him artifacts.
  • The Neidermeyer: The most classic definition. He is so wrapped up in his irrational belief that his bloodline alone has some kind of bizarre "sacred duty" to be the sword protecting Japan from all enemies, foreign and domestic, that he provides absolutely zero aid to SONG, whether in terms of materials, personnel, or intelligence, and has in fact actively hindered SONG on several occasions, yet the moment SONG faces a defeat or setback, he immediately takes it as an unforgivable personal insult because his bloodline's "honor" has been trampled. There's his behavior under the Pointy-Haired Boss entry, and the worst part, SONG has to suffer his intolerable behavior and attitude because if he feels sufficiently "dishonored," he can and will have SONG's funding cut, leaving the entire organization dead in the water, both figuratively and literally, until he learns he has no idea what he's doing and presses everybody back into service without even an apology or an update on the situation.
  • Not-So-Well-Intentioned Extremist: Despicable as he is, he does genuinely believe in protecting Japan from all potential threats. But he's disturbingly similar to Dr. Ver in that he wants to go down as a hero that protected his country, regardless of how many people has to die for it to happen as seen when he ordered Noble Red to kill everyone that attended Tsubasa and Maria's concert in XV Episode 2, and his idea of a "safe Japan" is a nation where the "weak" commonfolk are put under a mental control by the godlike power he'd extract from Shem-ha, forced to live in the way their leader deems productive and strengthening to their nation. Utlimately he is motivated by Pride in the idea of his bloodline's "sacred honor" and the idea of Japan as the strongest, most well defended nation on Earth rather than any true care for the country and its population.
  • Offing the Offspring: Fudou ends up being responsible for killing his elder son Yatsuhiro, something he expresses zero remorse for and even gives him pleasure since he'd already disowned him a bit earlier.
  • Pointy-Haired Boss: As if his self-righteous zealotry wasn't enough reason to hate him, every time SONG has to report to him, he can only bark orders, insults, and berate the people fighting to keep the world safe for what he sees as shortcomings, regardless of their efforts, results, or situation. To top it off, he doesn't have a clue on how to do anything but look important, and preach about how "sacred" his bloodline is and how it's the job of the said bloodline to protect Japan.
  • Posthumous Character: Averted. Though he doesn't show up outside of a brief moment in Tsubasa's flashback in GX, season 4 reveals he's unfortunately still alive.
  • Principles Zealot: He is so utterly convinced that his bloodline has some kind of bizarre divine mandate to protect the land of Japan, or rather the sacred ideals Japan as a nation, that he will do any and every nasty thing he has to in order make it happen. Including raping Tsubasa's mother in order to produce Tsubasa, and forcing the girl into becoming a Symphogear user and a near lifetime of being a lab rat.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: His eyes glow a mysterious red after revealing he poisoned the blood Noble Red needs to live since he no longer needs them.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Combined very heavily and inextricably with Screw the Rules, I Have Money!. Because he, personally, has the entire Japanese economy by the short hairs, he can outright demand The Diet to do whatever the hell he wants. So if he feels "dishonored" for any reason, and he feels you aren't bowing and scraping enough, kiss your livelihood goodbye.
  • Shadow Dictator: While The Diet is calling the shots in public, he's the one controlling The Diet. So even when the political fallout inevitably occurs, the politicians get shuffled around, but nothing ever truly changes.
  • Slasher Smile: Pulls this off often and to a very nightmarish degree throughout Episode 9 of XV. Dr. Ver would be proud.
  • Start of Darkness: While he was never nice, he truly descended into villainy when Adam destroyed the Kazanari Institute in AXZ.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Looks like an older version of his sons.
  • Stronger Than They Look: Perhaps not too surprising considering who his son is but Fudou is shockingly powerful for an old man able to hold an alchemist like Millaarc back just by grasping her arm which shocks and unnerves her. He then proceeds to defeat Genjurō in XV Episode 9 by punching his son in the gut and performing a Spinning Piledriver on him that leaves Genjurō's head buried in the dirt. He can also hold his own against Tsubasa and it takes Tsubasa using Amalgam to overpower Fudo.
  • Tautological Templar: Since protecting Japan is a noble goal, he honestly believes that any and everything he does in pursuit of that goal is beyond reproach. There is no way to change his mind on this, at all.
  • They Just Dont Get It: Season 4 ends with a nuclear missile being launched by America at Japan to bring the threat of the Symphogear and their enemies to an end. He not only completely ignores the fact that all the other nations on the planet are now willing to take any and all measures, including burning Japan to the ground, if need be, but actually doubles down on seeking out the very powers that triggered the attack, completely neglecting the fact that the nuke was only stopped by a Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In season 4, when Hibiki has been cocooned inside an energy barrier, he orders the JSDF to fire at the cocoon, without any idea of how the cocoon works, or its intended function, pointedly ignoring the protests of SONG, who were desperately trying to figure it out, and extract Hibiki safely. This triggers a chain of events that makes the US president order a nuclear strike on Japan. If the series was just the tiniest bit more cynical, Japan would have been blasted into a crater, it would have been entirely his fault, and he'd go to his grave cursing the gods, because he's firmly of the opinion that he did his duty, in spite of all the empirical evidence otherwise.
  • World's Strongest Man: Despite his age, Fudou is so strong that he can fight Symphogears with nothing but a katana, displaying strength and speed that even outclasses Genjurō's. It takes Tsubasa using Amalgalm to win against him and break his sword, which he's utterly shocked by. He then switches gears to getting Tsubasa to strike him down instead in order to go down in history as a hero not unlike Dr. Ver.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Even leaving aside his actions nearly killing everyone in Japan. The instant Tsubasa turns on him, not only does he disown her entirely from his bloodline but nearly puts a bullet in her head, stopped only by Yatsuhiro Taking the Bullet for her instead. This leads to a duel where Fudou starts off having every intent on killing her before changing tactics and letting her kill him instead once Tsubasa activates her Amalgalm abilities.
