Obel Royal Family

    King Lino En Kuldes
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suikoden4_lino.jpg
Tengou Star
Voiced by: Tomoyuki Shimura (JP) and Kim Strauss (EN)

The ruler of the Kingdom of Obel, and later becomes ruler of the Island Nations after the Island Liberation War. He and the Queen of Obel had two children, Flare and Lazlo, although he has no idea that Lazlo's actually his long lost son. Lino is the Tengou Star, also known as the Star of Conflagration, of the 108 Stars of Destiny.

  • A Father to His Men: His people are his priority and he shows great compassion to their well-being.
  • The Big Guy: Towers over the lanky Lazlo.
  • Combination Attack: Lino can perform the "Family Attack" (with Flare) and the "Spear Attack" (with Rachel and Eugene).
  • Cool Crown: Has one for special occasions. Lazlo can take it, along with his royal mantle, from his room in the HQ ship.
  • Duel Boss: Challenges Lazlo to one to decide who would lead the Island Liberation Navy.
  • The Cavalry: In Tactics, Lino and some soldiers arrive at Graska just in time to help Kyril, Corselia, and the others defeat the fishmen.
  • Elemental Powers: In Naval battles, Lino can use Rune Cannons of every element, but he is more compatible with the Earth Rune.
  • The Good King: He is a nice guy and well liked by the residents of Obel.
  • Heartbroken Bad Ass: His wife, the Queen of Obel, was bearer of the Rune of Punishment, but it eventually consumed her when she tried to use the Rune to protect Obel from pirates. His son was also lost at sea. The son later turns out to be the hero himself! Neither of them ever realizes it, though. Ironically, in Suikoden Tactics, Lino expresses interest in adopting Lazlo and designating him as his heir.
  • Heroic Build: He is very tough-looking.
  • King Incognito: He's very casual in appearance, and it's not immediately obvious he is Obel's king. That's just the way he likes it.
  • Modest Royalty: Most visitors don't even know he's a king at first glance.
  • Playing with Fire: In Tactics, his innate element is fire.
  • Power Up Mount: In Tactics, Lino En Kuldes can ride kangacorns and great owls.
  • Rightful King Returns: After freeing the other islands, Lino returns to retake Obel from the Kooluk Empire.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Obel is known for having royalty with a hands-on approach. Lino is no exception.
  • Surfer Dude: His look is that of a surfer.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: He's well-loved by the Obel people.

    Princess Flare En Kuldes
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suikoden4_flare.jpg
Tenkou Star
Voiced by: Kotomi Yamakawa (JP) and Kari Wahlgren (EN)

The princess and heir to the Kingdom of Obel. Headstrong and kind-hearted, Flare patrols the Kuknasi Sea alongside her own men and refuses to abandon Obel during the Kooluk invasion. She is the Tenkou Star, also known as the Clever Star, of the 108 Stars of Destiny.

  • Beauty Equals Goodness: She is pretty and is on the heroes side.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: Flare seems to have a crush on Lazlo. Granted, she doesn't know he's actually her little brother and it never goes beyond Ship Tease, but still.
  • Combination Attack: Flare can perform the "Family Attack" (with Lino) and the "Barrage Attack" (which requires three archers: two males and one female).
    • In Tactics, she also has the "Princess Attack" with Corselia.
  • Closer to Earth: She's way more grounded than her gung-ho father, King Lino, and views him as something of a Bumbling Dad: She loves her father dearly, but is often embarrassed and annoyed by his antics and feels he should act in a more statesman-like manner.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": Flare doesn't like to be called "Princess Flare".
  • Elemental Powers: In Naval battles, Flare can use Rune Cannons of every element, but she has best affinity with Lightning and Wind Runes, and joins with a Wind Rune attached.
  • Long Lost Sibling: Lazlo is, in fact, her younger brother.
  • Making a Splash: In Tactics, her innate element is water.
  • Plucky Girl
  • Power Up Mount: In Tactics, Flare can ride great owls.
  • Pretty Princess Powerhouse: She is a princess and a very capable fighter.
  • Red Is Heroic: Flare wears a red shirt and is a heroic figure in Obel.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She refuses to abandon Obel when it is invaded and stays to support her people.
  • Theme Naming: A "flare" is pyrotechnic device that can produces a brilliant light or intense heat without an explosion.
  • Warrior Princess: Flare fights by herself to save her nation from the Kooluk invasion.
  • You Are in Command Now: She's the only royal left on Obel in King Lino's absence.

    Queen of Obel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suikoden4_queen_of_obel.jpg
The late queen of Obel, wife of Lino En Kuldes, and mother of Flare and Lazlo.
  • Barrier Maiden: It's implied that her soul, stuck within the Rune of Punishment, prevents the rune from killing her son, Lazlo, for using it multiple times.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Her real name is unknown, being only referred to by her title.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She used the Rune of Punishment to destroy the invading Kooluk fleet.
  • Missing Mom: To Flare and Lazlo, as she perished long ago from using the Rune of Punishment when the Kooluk last attacked.
  • Posthumous Character: She died before the events of Suikoden IV.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Used the Rune of Punishment to save Obel from the invading Kooluk fleet, dying in the process.
  • Universally Beloved Leader: Like her husband, Lino, the queen was very loved by the people of Obel.

Civilians

    Setsu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suikoden4_setsu.jpg
Chizen Star
Voiced by: Masato Hijikata (JP) and Doug Stone (EN)

Setsu is the En Kuldes royal family's overprotective servant. He is the Chizen Star, also known as the Finished Star, of the 108 Stars of Destiny.

  • Continuity Nod: In Tactics, Setsu is present when Kyril had an audience with Lino En Kuldes, but he has no dialogue or plot relevance. He also posted a request at Middleport Quest Guild, asking someone to deal with an mice infestation in Obel.
  • Control Freak: He's panicky, pessimistic, and is obsessed with manners and decorum. Naturally, he's frustrated by his ultra-casual king.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Justified. Setsu has no combat experience and yet, risks his life to distract the Kooluk soldiers invading Obel in order to gain time for Lino and the heroes to escape in the HQ ship.
  • Elemental Powers: In Naval battles, Setsu can use Lightning and Earth Rune Cannons.
  • Jerkass: To Lazlo, when first encountered. Justified, as he is terrified of the Rune of Punishment, but also ironic since Lazlo is actually Obel's missing prince.
  • Non-Action Guy: Well, except for the one time he distracted the Kooluk army by basically going "neener neener" complete with butt-slapping.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Initially, he is very cold when the hero first shows up in Obel, but it's mostly due to the fact that he is wary of the hero's Rune of Punishment.
  • Old Retainer: To the En Kuldes royal family of Obel.
  • Undying Loyalty: To the Obel Royal Family.

  • Cannot Spit It Out: He has a big crush on Louise, but is too shy to spit it out.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Downplayed. He serves under Flare, and she's certainly competent. But he handles all of the logistics and other affairs, leaving Flare free to do what she does best.
  • Lovable Coward: Desmond is nice guy, but is very shy and can be easily frightened. Jango notes that even a mouse has more balls than him.
  • Shrinking Violet: He's incredibly shy.
  • Speech Impediment: He speaks with a pronounced stutter. When asked to man Rune Cannons, he stutters as he fires.

  • Combat Medic: Subverted in Tactics. Despite being playable, Ema cannot attack enemies but she can use items directly from the Caravan.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/suikoden4_wendel.png

Voiced by: Asato Murata (JP)

  • Dump Stat: Wendel has the highest MAG (magic power) stat in Suikoden Tactics. What makes this a dump stat is that, in Tactics, the characters are split in three categories: Fighter, Mage, and Support-type. Only the mage-type characters can equip spell runes, but Wendel was turned into a fighter-type, meaning that she can't use magic at all.
  • Elemental Powers: In Naval Battles, she can use powerful Rune Cannons of every element. For normal battles, she has better affinity with Lightning and Wind Runes.
  • Hero-Worshipper: She looks up to Nico enormously and aspires to be an amazing lookout, just like him.

  • Little Miss Snarker: She always says the first thing on her mind, which annoys just about everyone on the ship.
  • Making a Splash: In Tactics, her innate element is water.
  • Master of All: Believe it or not, she's probably one of the best party members in the game due to having three open rune slots, great strength, and magic on par with the designated mages, with the speed and defense of a warrior. It's a shame that she's given almost no time in your army.
  • Mouthy Kid: She always says what's on her mind.
  • Pirate Girl: Her design. Wendel is the ship HQ's assistant lookout.
  • The Red Mage: A fabulous claw fighter and an even better mage.
  • Short Tank: Nico refers to her as "he" and she cannot wear the female-specific corset armor.
  • Stripperiffic: She wears a bandana, open coat and short shorts.
  • Stalker with a Crush: On Nico. He's not aware of this, nor even that she's a girl.
  • Wolverine Claws: Use odd named claws for combat.
