Unlike the previous stories, this one includes a whole new class.

Due to the length of Still Waters 3, all spoilers up to and including the Kyoto trip in Book 1 are unmarked.

    open/close all folders

     Students # 1 - # 10
This folder contains the following: Student #1 'Aisaka Sayo', #2 'Yamamoto Kimi', #3 'Abe Aiko', #4 Kobayashi Ayumi, #5 Rosemary Dean, #6 Watanabe Miyako, #7 Mako Sylvester, #8 Suzuki Keiko, #9 Hayashi Fujiko, #10 Karakuri Chachamaru

Student 1 Aisaka Sayo

Sayo is still a ghost, still attending class in the same room she always has. Attached herself to Sakai Reiko after Kazumi left Mahora some time ago, but now that Kazumi is back, she often brings the two of them together, against their will. She's incredibly cute and innocent seeming, and in the six years since Still Waters 1 has become a sort of de facto leader and protector of the ghosts and spirits that live in and around Mahora.

Sayo has learned to better control her ghostly powers, and has tremendous capacity for such a young ghost; she is considered one of the most powerful ghosts in all of Japan.

  • Badass Adorable: She pretty much one shotted an Eldritch Abomination that only ghosts could see in her character story.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Judging from her character story, she's every ghost's worst nightmare.
  • The Heart: She plays this role in the group that forms when she drags her two best friends, Kazumi and Sakai Reiko (who constantly clash) together.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: First with Asakura Kazumi, then, when Kazumi left town to find someone who could train her more thoroughly, Sakai Reiko.
  • Kamehame Hadoken: She can do this with her ghost powers. She giggled for a week after she discovered she could do this.
  • Mighty Glacier: She's ridiculously powerful, but has to float to get anywhere.
  • Superpower Lottery: While being a ghost has its downsides, being possibly one of the strongest ghosts in the world goes a fair way to making up for it. She can give veteran necromancers nightmares.

Student 2 Yamamoto Kimi

A young orphan girl from Kyoto, she never knew her father and her mother died at a young age, leaving her a small apartment and a set of high quality swords. Generally quiet and a little shy, she is good friends with Abe Aiko.

Kimi was trained in swordsmanship by her mother, and has kept up her practice since her mother died. She has been trained in Eva's resort since shortly after the incident during the Kyoto field trip.

  • Ancestral Weapon: She inherited several swords from her mother.
  • BFS: She inherited one in the form of a large Nodachi that belonged to her mother.
  • Magic Wand: She received one in chapter 20 of Book 1; it has an arrowhead shape on the end.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mother died when she was younger, and her father is never mentioned.
  • Unfazed Everyman: She's the only normal, non-psychic, non-mage human in her training group.
  • Weak, but Skilled: She was taught to use a handful of sword types by her mother, who had some unknown connection to the Shinmeiryu. Nevertheless, she's only a rather short human girl, and was easily captured in Book 1.

Student 3 Abe Aiko

Another student from Kyoto, she is the youngest member of a very important family; she just wants to go to school and have fun like all the other kids her age, however. She is generally pleasant and good natured, and a little hesitant about revealing her skills. She is good friends with Yamamoto Kimi. She has been trained in Eva's resort since shortly after the incident during the Kyoto field trip.

Aiko enjoys photography, and is also highly trained in Onmyōdō, which comes in handy when she is thrust into the thick of things during the Kyoto trip and its aftermath.

  • Glass Cannon: Against the right sort of enemy, she can really dish it out.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Aiko just wants to live a normal life in school, but her family...
  • Magic Wand: She received one in chapter 20 of Book 1; it is green, with a yellow flower shape on the end.
  • Ojou: She is the future head of the Abe Clan
  • Paper Talisman: this is one of the many, many things she was trained in using as a child.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her parents were killed when a train struck their car.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Her family has fallen on hard times, but it is far from poor.

Student 4 Kobayashi Ayumi

Pretty, popular, and with a good sense of style in addition to the fact that she started her own band, Ayumi seems to have all the makings of a class favorite. But with her actions towards other students such as Caro Shaw show there's something dark behind that pretty face. She is fairly intelligent, arrogant, egotistical, and very, very emotionally fragile...a bad combination. Her oldest friend at Mahora is Kondo Kai, but her closest friend is the American transfer student Kara Stride, the bass player in her band, the No Name Band.

Despite her unpleasant personality, Ayumi is actually a very good guitarist and dancer.

  • Abusive Parents: Abusive stepmother.
  • A-Cup Angst: Not as flat as that, but she's extremely jealous of Kara's...bigness.
  • Afraid of Blood: Stemming from the car accident in her childhood that took her father from her.
  • Bad Mood as an Excuse: When she's in a bad mood, she takes it out on those around her.
  • Berserk Button: Suggesting that someone else is more attractive or better at something than she is is probably a bad idea. Also, she doesn't like when people go against her plans or ideas.
  • Break the Cutie: She suffered this in early childhood following the death of her father
  • Can't Take Criticism: She doesn't respond well to criticism at all.
  • Despair Event Horizon: She seems to be struggling with one of these in Book 2.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: So far, her band has been the closest thing she could find; But as of the end of the festival, it looks like even that is being taken from her.
  • Evil Matriarch: Suffers from having one of these.
  • Fangirl: She loves Misa's band, and especially Misa herself. When Misa fails to contact her after her band wins Fan Favorite during the first day of the festival, she starts to become very unstable.
  • Financial Abuse: She sends any money she can come up with that she doesn't need for normal things back home to her stepmother to keep her from threatening to interfere in her life.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Ayumi definitely fulfills this role in her band; the fact that she sometimes mellows out and actually treats the others like people for fairly long periods of time helps them deal with it. The fact that she's also a bundle of issues makes the effects even worse.
  • Harmful to Minors: After seeing her father die in a car crash, her stepmother emotionally abused her for years.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Normally she hides how sharp her gaze is by surrounding herself with people and changing her target before anyone can look long enough to realize anything's wrong.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: She loathes herself, yet behaves as if she can do no wrong.
  • Jerkass: Bad attitude, blaming other people for her problems, anger issues, bullying...yeah, she fits.
  • Mental World: Her mental world is basically flat bedrock rather than the grass and trees of field of wildflowers typical of most examples of this in this particular universe, indicating that something is really wrong.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother is never mentioned.
  • Misplaced Retribution: When everything gets to be too much and then she gets bullied by a trio of mean girls, she takes out her frustrations on poor Caro Shaw.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her father died in a car wreck, and her mother is never mentioned; she does have a stepmother, however.
  • Parent with New Paramour: Happens twice. The first time was when Ayumi's dad married her stepmother; the second time, after his death in a car wreck, involved her stepmother marrying another man. Ayumi is essentially going without a family at all.
  • Survivor Guilt: She feels terrible about the fact that she survived the wreck that killed her father, but her stepmother's constant abuse has forced this off to the side.
  • Trauma Conga Line: She seems to be going through one in Book 2.
  • Troubled Abuser: When she's upset, the first thing she does is lash out at one of her favorite targets. This all comes to a head when, after being the victim of a rather intense bullying session, she seeks out her classmate Caro Shaw and tries to do the same thing to her.
  • Wicked Stepmother: Since her mother simply isn't there, her father married another woman when Ayumi was a child. Ayumi didn't get along with her, but their relationship became much worse when Ayumi's father died in a car wreck that Ayumi survived and her stepmother started blaming her for it. By the time of the story, Ayumi is living in the dorms at Mahora, sending her stepmother whatever money she can afford to send to shut her up and keep her from sending Ayumi threatening letters about dragging her back home to go to a local school where she won't have to pay as much money.
  • You Should Have Died Instead: Her stepmother certainly seems to think Ayumi should have died instead of her father.

Student 5 Rosemary Dean

The first of several transfer students, Rosemary Dean is from New England in the US. A playful trickster, she is also incredibly lazy, and will go out of her way to avoid chores and cleaning duties at school and the Archery Club.

In addition to being generally athletic, Rosemary is quite good at archery, and is also quite an accomplished witch.

  • Flying Broomstick: She uses one of these at the festival to save classmate Hayashi Fujiko and the youkai girl Yagi Ryoko.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Like Sophie, she also qualifies for this at 5'8"
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Judging by her performance at the festival, she's incredibly good with her slingshot.
  • Meaningful Name: Word of God says "Rosemary" is meant to recall stereotypical witch-like names, while "Dean" is meant to bring to mind the image of a rebellious character, such as one James Dean would play in a movie.
  • Mundane Utility: She uses illusion magic to...wear casual clothes instead of her school uniform in class.
  • The Trickster: From skipping out on cleaning duties at her club to using illusion magic to avoid wearing her school uniform just because and possessing a massive amount of experience in regards to pranking people, she is clearly not to be trusted.

Student 6 Watanabe Miyako

Miyako is shy and a little geeky, but nevertheless is the singer for Ayumi's band. As the newest member, Ayumi sometimes gives her a hard time until Kara gets her to stop. She enjoys her days at school, learning and having fun with her friends.

Miyako has an excellent singing voice, and can even speak a little english...a skill she picked up to help her singing. She is one of the most intelligent students in her grade, but is also lazy; this is partially a defense mechanism to keep Ayumi from asking Miyako to do her homework, but also due to some genuine laziness on Miyako's part. While she enjoys school, she enjoys singing and having fun with her friends even more, so her grades are only average through a combination of laziness and intentionally wrong answers on tests. She is also very skilled in vale tudo style fighting as well as the acrobatic wrestling style using in Lucha Libre, Mexican wrestling, which a friend of the family taught her, and even appears as the masked wrestler El Buho during the tournament at the Mahora Festival in Book 2. She has excellent reflexes and a very quick mind, as seen when she stumbles upon Eva's cabin in the woods and Chachazero mistakes her for an intruder. After that incident, she has begun training in Eva's resort.

  • Awesomeness by Analysis: Miyako's naturally good with numbers, and shows her ability to translate this into real life usefulness in the chapter where she finds Eva's cabin and is attacked by Chachazero, by batting a thrown knife out of the air.
  • Badass Adorable: As seen in the festival tournament arc of Book 2, she can definitely take care of herself. After all, how many people can defeat a youkai in hand to hand combat?
  • Girly Bruiser: Oh so girly, and yet still capable of kicking ass.
  • The Heart: She would play this role in Ayumi's band, but Ayumi's personality and personal problems steamroll right over her.
  • Masked Luchador: She wears a luchador mask in her matches during the festival tournament in Book 2; it belonged to her grandfather before he passed it down to her.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: As revealed in her character story. While she couldn't be called "stupid" in the main story, she doesn't come across as particularly intelligent, either. Her character story reveals that she's hiding her intelligence as a way of keeping others from bothering her, asking for help or in Ayumi's case asking for her to do their homework. Brilliant, but Lazy? As of the festival arc in Book 2, it's also been revealed that she has significant skill as a combatant, notably defeating Rex, a full blooded youkai, in the ring.
  • Seen It All: She's lived in Mahora for years. Martial arts masters fighting in the streets? She's seen it. Giant robots going on a rampage? She's seen it. People hanging out in the branches of the world tree? She's seen it. At this point, it'd take something seriously bizarre to surprise her.
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: Her hair color isn't brought up often, but it is mentioned that she's terrified of going up on stage and singing in front of other people, even though she's participated in one band tournament already.
  • Smarter Than You Look: She's cute, but also looks like she doesn't have a clue. In reality, she's one of the most intelligent students in the class.
  • Teen Genius: She may hide it behind her innocent expression and obfuscating stupidity, but she is incredibly intelligent.
  • Waif-Fu: As shown during the festival tournament in book 2.
  • Weak, but Skilled: She'll beat you unconscious if you're not careful, but one good hit will take her down.

Student 7 Mako Sylvester

The second transfer student, Mako Sylvester is a half-blood whose parents live in the midwest of the US. She has lived in Japan for some time with her aunt. Her best friend is Sato Gin, who does her best to protect her from anything threatening or hurtful.

Mako is a psychic with touch-activated powers that show her things in the past, emotions, and potentially other things about objects, people, and animals. Unfortunately, she is unable to control this ability. After extensive training in Eva's resort, she is now able to use simple magic and has become somewhat athletic as well. She has been trained in Eva's resort since shortly after the incident during the Kyoto field trip..

  • A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read: She has found this out the hard way, as shown in her character story.
  • Blessed with Suck: Touch based psychic powers are cool, right? Well...not when you have no control over them and you read all emotions, thoughts, and other things every time you touch someone or in some cases something.
  • Gentle Giant: The third tallest girl in the class, most of the others think she's very intimidating; she is one of the kindest, most polite people around.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: She's 5'9", awkward, and shy.
  • Magic Wand: She received one in Chapter 20 of Book 1; it has a spoked wheel shape on the end.
  • Mystical Waif: Tall, quiet, uncontrollable psychic powers...she fits.
  • Psychic Powers: Psychic powers run in her father's side of the family, and typically involve a mixture of telepathy and empathy.
  • Power Incontinence: She has no control over her powers; they are always on. Any time she touches another person, and often when she touches an object, she gets a flash of what the person is thinking or feeling at the moment of contact, or what they were thinking or feeling when they last held the item.
  • The Quiet One: She's very quiet around anyone she doesn't fully trust, and she only trusts a rare few.
  • Touch Telepathy: Whenever she touches an item or a person, she gets a psychic flash giving her a quick view of their history or mindset.
  • Unhappy Medium: She is this without a doubt, even though she has quite a bit of control over her ability, brushing up against a person can still trigger it at any time.

Student 8 Suzuki Keiko

The typical quiet smart girl, Keiko aces tests and can typically answer any question the teachers may ask. She tends to keep to herself due to an inability to slow her thought processes down enough for everyone else to keep up.

Keiko latched on to Endo Haru and later Miyoshi Youko after a life threatening incident in the city and is learning how to survive in a world filled with things that can kill her with little more than a thought or a casual flick of the wrist, and, as shown during the A Fox In Kyoto arc in book 2, has become quite adept at dealing with people who are stronger than she is.

  • Brainy Brunette: She is the most intelligent student in the class, possibly in her whole grade.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Just look at the "A Fox In Kyoto" arc in Book 2.
  • Encyclopaedic Knowledge: She knows at least a little about everything. When she discovers something she doesn't know about, she immediately investigates in an attempt to learn more.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: She has a pretty severe problem connecting with people because of this.
  • Jumped at the Call: Normally a quiet, well behaved girl, when she found out Haru was part youkai she did everything she could to become involved.
  • The Team Normal: As a normal human, she hangs out with a youkai and a hybrid youkai/human.
  • Unfazed Everyman: When confronted with the knowledge that there is far more to the world than mere humans living on Earth, she is excited to learn more rather than surprised.

Student 9 Hayashi Fujiko

Obsessed with heroes due to the Rider shows her father showed her all through her childhood, she lives her life the best she can, while helping those who need it. She has a powerful sense of justice that developed early on, and looks up to heroes to the point that she wants to become one too, some day.

To support her desire to become a hero, Fujiko took up learning Judo early on as a way to incapacitate people without hurting them too badly. She is very good at it, but subconsciously holds back all the time, making her look weaker than she really is.

  • Bully Hunter: She tries to be one, but even though she's trained in Judo, is one of the better members of the Judo Club, and is certainly capable of giving just about anyone a good fight, she's not quite at a level to regularly defeat the sort of bully commonly found in Mahora.
  • Waif-Fu: She is one of the more skilled members of the Judo Club, and uses her Judo skills when she gets into bad situations.

Student 10 Karakuri Chachamaru

Chachamaru has matured as time goes on, and now, in a new body more realistic than ever, she has once again joined Negi's class alongside Eva and her sister Rally.

Chachamaru's new body is faster and smoother moving than ever, and, while it has been designed with an emphasis on recon based action, Hakase has developed a great deal of portable weaponry Chachamaru can equip when necessary.

  • Barbie Doll Anatomy: She continues to refuse Hakase's offers of adding "the naughty bits", much to Hakase's annoyance.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: As should be obvious by this point.
  • Covert Pervert: She has a special built in camera filter that can see through clothing. Eva makes a mental note to ask Hakase for the pictures Chachamaru almost surely has of Negi.
  • Gatling Good: In Meet The New Class, she is presented with a brand new gatling laser.
  • Unusual Ears: She still has oversized attachments covering the area where the ears would be on a normal human, but they are much better designed by the start of Still Waters 3.
  • Younger Than They Look: By the start of Still Waters 3, she's only nine years old.

     Students # 11 - # 20
This folder contains the following: Student #11 Sophie Rivers, #12 Takahashi Shizuko, #13 Ono Ran, #14 Yoshida Ume, #15 Possum Cade, #16 Kara Stride, #17 Endo Haru, #18 Mochizuki Kagami, #19 Inoue Ai, #20 Miyoshi Youko

Student 11 Sophie Rivers

The third transfer student, this time from somewhere in Europe, Sophie Rivers is a beautiful, standoffish girl with no sense of her appearance. Though she tries to keep her distance from everyone, this attitude has gained her a large following among the younger students.

She has been trained in an exotic form of shamanism, and often goes out into the woods alone to use her skills, such as purification of corrupted items, fortune telling, and astral projection. She also has visions that come to her whether awake or asleep, and records them all in her dream journal.

  • Astral Projection: She often practices this alone out in the woods nears the campus.
  • Fortune Teller: Word of God says she knows many methods of fortune telling, but her strengths lie elsewhere.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: She has a scar across her cheek she received from a branch while running through the woods outside Mahora to escape a Vulture.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: At 5'8", she fits this by the standards of Japan.
  • In-Series Nickname: The P.E. teacher Max Linell calls her "Sparrow".
  • I See Dead People: This is an ability she's always had; it goes hand in hand with her shaman skills and visions.
  • I Work Alone: She actively distances herself from those around her for reasons of her own; she is also firmly convinced the rest of her class is really, really weird.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Inverted, other students think she's really cool.
  • Oracular Urchin: She has visions.
  • Parental Abandonment: She was raised by a crazy old man, but her real parents are never mentioned.
  • Psychic Powers: Hers involve seeing visions and astral projection.
  • The Quiet One: She almost never speaks or draws attention to herself in class.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: More like orange. Little is known about her other than the fact that she has several rare skills, her parents are never mentioned, the insane man who raised her and taught her to control her abilities is dead, and Rivers is not her real last name.
  • Unkempt Beauty: Word of God says she is very attractive, but is so convinced from her visions she'll never marry that the idea someone might be attracted to her doesn't even cross her mind anymore.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She is scared of vultures, mostly because of the way she sees them in visions and the way they often come straight to her.

Student 12 Takahashi Shizuko

Tall, quiet, beautiful, and elegant, her head is also constantly in the clouds. She is kind, and seems to have a strong a justice as well...along with a very jealous following among the younger students.

Shizuko is skilled at calligraphy, but doesn't seem to take her classes seriously. Her grades are adequate, and she rarely pays attention in class, opting instead to look out the window during lectures.

  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Tallest girl in the class, check. Long dark hair, check. Distant, check. Beautiful, check.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: While not the most intelligent girl in the class (Suzuki Keiko takes that title), she does well on tests without any real effort while spending most of her time looking out the window.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: She fits this at 5'11"
  • Younger Than They Look: She looks like she's in her late teens; she's actually one of the youngest students in the class.

Student 13 Ono Ran

Perhaps the spookiest student in the class, she is well known for scary-accurate fortunetelling. She rarely speaks in class, but when she does she usually gives out good advice.

Ran is actually an intensely powerful psychic with a centuries-old ghost in her head who helps her control her powers and gives her advice. Ran is able to see spirits and ghosts, use mental attacks, read minds, use telepathy, and even rewrite others' personalities, though she would never use such an ability after what happened in her childhood.

  • A Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Read: Like her classmate Mako Sylvester, she found this out the hard way when she was younger.
  • Blessed with Suck: Mind control? In her case it also amounts to mind-overwriting if she isn't careful, and it's an effect that's always "on". She has to keep it under constant rein at all times.
  • Comes Great Responsibility: Her power is incredibly easy to abuse; fortunately, she knows how bad it can get if she isn't careful.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: Eerie pale green. As seen in her character story, she is incredibly powerful.
  • The Fettered: Because of the psychological effects of being responsible for so many deaths earlier in her life without meaning for it to happen, she now has a big thing against hurting other people; the most she will do is make them faint with precision emotion bombs.
  • Harmful to Minors: Ran comes face to face with this again and again (and again!), finally culminating in a mass suicide directly caused by her justified angst and mental powers feeding on each other and spiraling out of control.
  • Mystical Waif: Ran fits this trope quite well; she speaks rarely, has some extremely powerful abilities, and is a mystery to just about everybody else.
  • Nerves of Steel: Ran approaches such situations as seeing a youkai boy attacking Kai and a situation rapidly developing into something similar to what happened at her last school without batting an eyelash.
  • One-Woman Army: Her psychic abilities allow her, with sufficient prep time, to wipe out large groups of people. Already responsible for over a hundred deaths at her old school, she is clearly powerful enough to become a total monster if she wanted to. Luckily, she doesn't want to make anyone else die.
  • Parental Abandonment: Both her parents are dead; her father died in a car wreck, her mother committed suicide during the incident that killed off every other student in the school Ran was attending at the time.
  • Psychic Block Defense: Mako Sylvester mentions this after the festival arc in Book 2.
  • Power Incontinence: She suffered from this at first; due to the nature of her powers, the effects were devastating. She's since learned how to control her powers.
  • Psychic Link: She created these with everyone she knew when she was a child and unable to control her powers; it ultimately resulted in the deaths of all involved but her.
  • Psychic Powers: She has a range of psychic powers including telepathy, creating psychic links, being an empath, and more.
  • The Quiet One: She rarely speaks, and when she does she tends to leave those around her with more questions than answers.
  • Self-Made Orphan: As shown in her chapter in 'Meet The New Class', her mother dies as a direct result of her mental connection with Ran.
  • Where I Was Born and Razed: Her lack of awareness/control over her mental powers led her to slowly turn her parents and neighbors into near-mindless automatons whose only purpose in life is to make her happy...all before she starts school. After that, things go downhill in a big way, ultimately resulting in a mass suicide as everyone in the school at the time takes turns jumping off the roof to their deaths; everyone Ran is mentally connected to such as her mother, neighbors, and the occasional person out in the city, commits suicide or otherwise drops dead at the same time.

Student 14 Yoshida Ume

Ume seems to be just a regular schoolgirl, cheerful and diligent...until one meets her mother, the ex-head of an all-female motorcycle gang. Her father was in a similar position, and she inherited her stubbornness from the two of them. She prefers to lived a civilized life, however, and will go out of her way to avoid making a scene in public, even going so far as to feign fear unless she gets mad enough.

Ume has struggled long and hard to learn all the skills expected of a proper housewife, which she hopes to be one day. Nevertheless, she's also capable of barking orders, defending herself against most normal people in a fight, and even riding a motorcycle.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: As hinted at in the short character story based around a day of her life, she's got a temper.
  • Death Glare: She stares down a group of yakuza with one, described as the "gaze of a thousand disapproving mothers".
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father ran off with another woman before Ume was born.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Even though her parents were both feared members of motorcycle gangs and she inherited her mother's personality, she goes to quite a bit of trouble to seem like a normal girl.
  • It Runs in the Family: While she tries to hide it, inside she is exactly like her mother was at her age, minus the biker gang stuff.
  • Japanese Delinquents: Her mother was an infamous leader of an all girl biker gang while her father was higher up in another one. It shows in her personality when she's not concentrating on being a normal girl.
  • The Nondescript: The Writer jokingly refers to her as "Yoshida Ume (Who?)"
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Invoked. Ume is doing her best to seem like a traditional Japanese woman.

Student 15 Possum Cade

Yet another transfer student, she's a friendly, likable person, known by sight if not name to a great many people. She is Urashima Taro's best friend, and the two of them often get into trouble together.

Possum is skilled in Hoodoo with an emphasis on spellcasting, and, about halfway through SW 3 Book 2, became a new kind of vampire due to Jonus Hart's actions. She has been trained in Eva's resort and by Akashi Yuuna.

  • Battle Aura: Shimmery and hard to see if you look directly at it.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: She is one of the friendliest people around, but that won't stop her from bashing you upside the head with a 2 x 4, as seen in the Book 1 side story How Taro Met Possum.
  • Free-Range Children: She and her sister Lucy seem to have been wandering loose for several years before Possum came to Japan alone and made her way to Mahora.
  • Improvised Weapon: Possum is very good at using anything she can pick up as a weapon, though her favorite is probably a 2x4.
  • In-Series Nickname: Max called her "Whiskey" because of her eye color, and it stuck.
  • Magic Wand: She received one in Chapter 20 of Book 1; it has a spade shape, like the card suite, on the end.
  • Mysterious Past: Here past is never fully revealed, but she is hinted to have been chased across the US for mysterious reasons related to hoodoo/voodoo, and, when she got to Japan, was already capable enough to help Taro fight off a motorcycle gang at the age of twelve.
  • Tragic Monster: It looks like, in recent chapters, she's heading this way, with plenty of Resist the Beast and Horror Hunger. Time will tell if she's successful or not...you can probably guess the odds.
  • Supernaturally Delicious and Nutritious: Both she and her older sister Lucy seem to have extremely delicious blood, as far as vampires are concerned. Jonus Hart, one of the Great Vampire Lords, even gets drunk on it, and worries about his self control should he meet her again.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: They're what got her the nickname of "Whiskey". After various incidents in the side stories and the revelation in Book 2 that she has almost certainly become a vampire, it is clear that she isn't someone to ignore in a fight.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: She always wears her hair in one of these, because it gets in the way if she doesn't.

Student 16 Kara Stride

Another transfer student from the US, this beautiful girl is the bassist for Ayumi's band. She seems unapproachable to many, mostly due to her beauty and how awkward she feels when dealing with unexpected attention. She has a protective streak, which usually only comes to light when Ayumi is picking on someone, and while she usually acts like a tomboy, she has a girly side too, which her mother has repressed since her childhood. She can play several musical instruments, including the bass guitar, and has even been classically trained in playing the flute.

Kara has been trained in swordsmanship, and has also displayed an ability with knife fighting and using throwing weapons, a result of her training in the Sakura's Lie school of swordsmanship, an offshoot of the Shinmeiryu school that started up in America in the 1800s. She was also born with the ability to perform immensely powerful music magic (due to her bass playing and the bass's role of supporting a song) as well as the extremely dangerous Mystic Eyes of Attraction, which can make people fall in love with her and follow her every command. Normally the effect is blocked by a magic pair of glasses, but when active, both she and her target are affected, sometimes to the point where she goes into a trance and her body moves on its own. The effect is powerful but quickly fades once it has been blocked, and someone with enough willpower can withstand it.

  • Big Fancy House: Before she came to Japan, she lived in quite a large house with its own Martial Arts Dojo.
  • Lady of War: Though she normally seems awkward, distant, and naive, her whole personality changes when she goes into battle.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: [[spoiler: As soon as she is knocked out, her mind control over her victims fades and everyone is left mildly confused and unsure as to how they ended up where they are, including Kara herself.
  • Magic Music: Not only does she have the ability to use music based magic, she has a natural affinity to a very powerful variation of it.
  • The Medic: It hasn't shown up in the main story yet, but in the side stories she's pulled out a first aid kit and begun patching people up before anyone else even attempted to help.
  • Mind-Control Music: Her bass playing can function as this when used in conjunction with her ability to use music magic.
  • Musical Assassin: Her music magic allows her to do this.
  • Obliviously Beautiful: She has no idea how attractive she is, and her first reflex upon someone hitting on her is that they're making fun of her. She had an...unusual childhood.
  • Oblivious to Love: She seems to be completely oblivious to the fact that boys might be attracted to her, and instead often assumes they're making fun of her.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Because of her music and magic eye abilities.
  • Secretly Wealthy: While not rich to the ridiculous extremes of some others, her family lives in a large house with its own martial arts dojo, can afford to send her to Japan, and can give her enough money to live on that she can buy a $2000 bass guitar without her family finding out.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Nicely enough to win a beauty contest featuring adults when she's only fourteen.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Kara is socially awkward, has no sense of style, and is really extremely naive while her younger sister is perfectly comfortable dealing with crowds of people, is quite trendy, and appears to be very experienced in dealing with the world in general.

Student 17 Endo Haru

An active, athletic sort of girl, Endo Haru would prefer to ride around on her bike rather than hang out or gossip with the others. She tends to fade into the background, and while it sometimes causes problems for her, she tends to prefer it that way.

Haru is a half human, half wolf/fox youkai (on her mother's side) hybrid with a healthy dose of hybrid vigor providing her with an enormous amount of power. Due to her half youkai status, however, her family has been forced to move often to avoid too much attention from either youkai or youkai hunters, and Haru has learned to hate her youkai side. She has begun training under Miyoshi Youko.

  • Asian Fox Spirit: She is one quarter fox youkai and one quarter wolf youkai. Incidentally, the Fox and Wolf tribes don't get along. At all.
  • Battle Aura: When transformed, it's powerful enough to be felt a long way off; people at the epicenter are generally crushed to the ground.
  • BFS: She gets one at the end of Book 2
  • Cool Sword: It's almost as long as she is tall, shaped like a Chinese dao, has powers against darkness and corruption and evil spirits, and also has a rejuvenation effect on whoever wields it. It's actually a legendary weapon that makes 'even the gods cry' at the sight of it.
  • Cornered Rattlesnake: During the Youkai Festival in Book 2 when Haru is tricked into having a duel with Rex, she doesn't do anything but panic until Rex forces her into action by attacking. Then she kicked his ass hard.
  • Cowardly Lion: She's always scared about going into dangerous situations, but will ultimately do the the right if possible.
  • Cursed with Awesome: Shapeshifting into a giant wolf-like creature, potential youkai powers...actually sounds pretty useful. She considers it a curse, however. She and Keiko all but say the trope name while discussing her powers early in Book 2.
  • The Drag-Along: Haru doesn't want to go on any adventures or skip school to go to secret festivals or anything; she just wants to go to school and have a normal day.
  • Little Bit Beastly: When Youko suggests she make her youkai ears pop out at the festival, they turn out to be huge, which makes her incredibly attractive to the opposite sex by youkai standards; even Kotarou stares at her ears for a moment when they accidentally meet. She doesn't show her tail, but Youko comments that it's probably big and fluffy, making it just as attractive as her ears.
  • Super Mode: Her youkai animal mode counts as this. It turns her into a huge white wolf/fox looking creature and frees up all her youkai power. Just being in this form is enough to knock out weaker characters and causes significant distress to those were are unprepared for it.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Definitely started out as this; her training with classmate and fellow youkai Miyoshi Youko is going a long way toward fixing the "unskilled" part.
  • Willfully Weak: She doesn't like to use her youkai abilities because she's afraid that side of her will take over.

Student 18 Mochizuki Kagami

Pretty, popular, and fairly friendly, Kagami is a pleasant girl to be around...until you do something to annoy her. Due to training together with them in Eva's resort, she has become good friends with Urashima Taro, Possum Cade, and Nakamura Sachiko as well as her roommate Endo Haru. She also possesses a small freeform golem in the shape of a cat made out of playdoh that she recieved as a child in Still Waters 2. She is very possessive of it, as she received it from her hero Misa when they first met.

Kagami has a very high power level for her age, easily on par with some members of the Old Class. Her spells tend to focus on shooting beams of energy, using her staff as a focus; the power is almost too much for the wand Misa gave her to handle. Misa approves of this. She has trained in Eva's resort and under Misa.

  • Braids of Action: At first it's just a ponytail, but after the first night of being Magical Girl Kagamin, she starts wearing her hair in a long braid with a ribbon.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: Not only does she have a cat golem, but she is quickly revealed to have tons of magic power, to go with her green eyes.
  • Cosplay Otaku Girl: Word of God again. Her "Magical Girl Kagamin" costume is basically cosplay, and she made it herself.
  • Cuddle Bug: Kagami is surprisingly one of these toward her friends, as seen at the start of the third day of the festival in book 2.
  • Energy Absorption: Kagami's Twilight Breaker, like the attack it was based on, absorbs magical energy from its surroundings to charge up.
  • Glass Cannon: She has a powerful attack, but no defense.
  • I Know Mortal Kombat: Her magic style is based pretty much entirely off of magical girl shows such as Lyrical Nanoha and Sailor Moon.
  • Indifferent Beauty: She's aware of her beauty, she just doesn't really notice it unless it's brought up.
  • Inept Mage: At first, she seemed highly skilled, picking up the basic practice spells with ease; anything more complex, however, inevitably failed, which is where this trope comes in. After a time, however, she discovered how her own unique brand of magic worked, and grew out of this.
  • Jumped at the Call: Upon locating her hero Misa, she jumped at the chance to start learning magic.
  • Magical Girl Warrior: She was obsessed with Magical Girl anime and always wanted to be one when she grew up. Thanks to events in Still Waters 2, she ended up in Mahora and got her wish.
  • Magic Misfire: She has several of these while training in Eva's resort.
  • Magic Staff: Eva buys her one with a crescent moon shape on the end during the girls' training. Everyone else gets a wand.
  • Magic Wand: Kagami used one of these, given to her by Misa, before she got her staff.
  • Ojou: She is The next in line after her brother to become head of a certain Yakuza group.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her parents were murdered by a rival yakuza group.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Not an extreme example, but she and her brother are worth the equivalent of several million U.S. dollars. Nobody knew about this until she mentioned it to Taro in Book 2.
  • Shout-Out: Kagami's whole Magical Girl Kagamin Secret Identity is meant as a shoutout to Nanoha, down to the style of her magic; her name and some elements of her personality are adapted from Kagami of Lucky Star.

Student 19 Inoue Ai

Quiet, inconspicuous, and all around innoffensive, her classmates know little about Inoue Ai, and she likes it that way. She is a member of the drama club, and looks up to one of the more famous past members, Murakami Natsumi, for her acting ability. Few people can hold a conversation with her, but Sasaki Rina seems determined to drag her out of her shell, while her other friend Mori Kumiko just seems to be getting dragged along by Rina's excitement.

Ai has an unusual ability to switch her personality and manner of thought to that of any number of characters from books, plays, TV, or videogames; this comes with all sorts of bonuses, such as an increased understanding of robotics, or an increase of courage or quick thinking over her normal self. Her original personality is incredibly withdrawn, showing very little emotion unless she thinks she's alone or is with someone she trusts completely. Naturally, this quiet, distant side of her is what most people see.

  • Creepy Blue Eyes: She hides it well, but as shown in her side story and character story, something's not quite right about her.
  • Teen Genius: At a glance, she simply seems like an average student; she also repaired a damaged Tanaka-san robot with nothing but computer parts and has her own spot in the robotics lab at the university, given to her by none other than Hakase Satomi herself.

Student 20 Miyoshi Youko

Tall, beautiful, and with striking long silver-white hair, Youko is quite mysterious; she is also an incorrigible prankster and loves to play tricks on everyone, from her roommates to the faculty members at school.

In reality, Youko is a 400+ year old Silver Fox Tribe youkai, the daughter of the former Youkai King (who was actually a queen). She is far more powerful than her childish personality and love of pranks make her appear, and is capable of stepping out of her normal fun loving persona to show her regal heritage. She has spent the past three hundred years sealed in a cell under the Shinmeiryu compound in Kyoto, and was only recently set free and brought back to Mahora by the Headmaster. She was married to a human man and had a child before she was sealed away, but both were long dead by the time she was released. She is currently training both Endo Haru and Suzuki Keiko.

  • Cute Monster Girl: Of the Silver Fox Youkai variety.
  • Demon Slaying: She was in love with the leader of the Shinmeiryu at the time; she picked up a lot from him.
  • Eyes Always Shut: She only opens them wide when she's serious, only then revealing how pretty they are.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: At 5'10", she is quite tall.
  • King Incognito: Few people seem to realize just who she is until she speaks up about it. Of course, being the daughter of the previous Queen of the Youkai can be dangerous.
  • Little Bit Beastly: When there's no need to hide what she is, she often goes around with her fox ears and tail showing.
  • Luminescent Blush: She does this in Chapter 18, after trying and failing to seduce Negi through Shapeshifting into several different women and finding out he's got much more integrity and self control than she had given him credit for.
  • Mystical White Hair: She looks like she's about twenty, but her hair is silvery white...a product of being a member of the Silver Fox Tribe of youkai.
  • Older Than They Look: She's around 400 by the beginning of Still Waters 3.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mother died years and years ago, and her father is never mentioned.
  • Proud Beauty: She's well aware of how she looks, and is just fine with using her looks to get something she wants or, much more often, tease others.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Really about four hundred and something years old.
  • Sarcastic Clapping: She does this to Masashi during the Youkai Festival in book 2 when he embarrasses himself in front of a crowd.
  • Shapeshifting: This is one of her skills, though she doesn't seem particularly to use it often.
  • Shapeshifting Seducer: In Chapter 18. She tries this on Negi before class one day when she gets bored, first as Asuna wearing nothing much, then Konoka in a Naked Apron, then Setsuna with Wing Bra, and finally, when none of those work, she transforms into Tsuruko wearing a dominatrix outfit.

     Students # 21 - # 29
This folder contains the following: Student #21 Caro Shaw, #22 Sasaki Rina, #23 Sato Gin, #24 Nakamura Sachiko, #25 Mori Kumiko, #26 Evangeline A. K. McDowell, #27 Kondo Kai, #28 Urashima Taro, #29 Rally Wheeler

Student 21 Caro Shaw

Caro Shaw is a mousy, shy girl with nothing special about her appearance other than how childishly cute she is; the sense of helplessness she exudes has caused Kobayashi Ayumi to focus on her as a bullying victim at times. While most of the class thinks she's cute, she has so much trouble approaching anyone that she doesn't have any friends other than Zazie Rainyday, who she met one day sitting on a branch high in the World Tree.

Caro is a demon of some sort, and possesses immense strength and possibly other abilities; it is unknown why she is in Mahora. Zazie is currently training her.

  • Apologetic Attacker: At the end of the Intruder arc, she apologizes tearfully to Jonus Hart, the villain of the arc, while crushing his hands.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Hinted to be of the same sort as Zazie, though the truth isn't known yet.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: She has the power to capture a vampire by grabbing his wrists, but has had zero training.
  • Willfully Weak: She takes special care not to do anything that could cause her to hurt someone with the strength her demon blood gives her.

Student 22 Sasaki Rina

Pretty, friendly, and energetic, Rina is a social butterfly, just like her big sister Makie. Unfortunately, her mother pushed her into doing gymnastics in an attempt to make her as successful as Makie was, and often compares the two, heaping stress upon poor Rina's shoulders. Due to this, she resents her big sister's sudden appearance as the assistant P.E. coach. She seems obsessed with Inoue Ai, and is her only real friend in the class along with Mori Kumiko, who Rina also drags along.

Rina is a very good singer and dancer, something that makes her classmate Kobayashi Ayumi very jealous, as she can't sing well at all; Rina isn't fond of Ayumi, as she has seen her picking on Caro several times. In addition to her singing and dancing, Rina is quite good at gymnastics for her age range, but not as good as Makie was, making her home situation even more tense.

  • Can't Catch Up: Non combat example. Rina is a gymnast trying to surpass her older sister Makie's accomplishments, but she just can't quite catch up to where Makie was at her age.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her mother is mentioned several times, but never her father.
  • The Unfavorite: She certainly seems to think this is the case; she thinks her mother loves Makie much more than she loves her.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: She desperately wants her mother to be proud of her, even though she can't quite match her big sister's accomplishments in gymnastics.

Student 23 Sato Gin

Sato Gin is an outcast; with her sharp tongue and fiery temper, that isn't likely to change any time soon. She is a tall, awkward looking girl, and was searching desperately for a purpose in her life before the incident in Kyoto during the field trip changed her life forever and exposed her to many other people who possessed unusual powers normally hidden from the world. She had a rough childhood and was often bullied at school for her unusual height and white hair, and began acting up because of it; her mother finally got fed up with it and was about to marry her off to a boy she barely even knew just to get her out of her hair before her great aunt put a stop to it and sent her to Mahora. She is Mako Sylvester's best friend, and has become good friends with Abe Aiko, Yamamoto Kimi, and Kondo Kai, who are all in the same training group with her.

Gin has the ability to 'curse' things using a specific phrase. Most of her 'curses' take the form of changing something's state of being, such as changing a chunk of concrete floor into a puff of dust or a wood coffee table to stone. Its limits are ill defined, as she herself stated that sometimes it just doesn't work, and once she even pulled off what almost amounted to a miracle and saved the life of a man who had been kicked in the throat and was suffocating. Word of God says it's a form of contract her family made a long time ago with some supernatural being or group of beings. Exact details are unknown at this time. She has been trained in Eva's resort since shortly after the incident during the Kyoto field trip.

  • Abusive Parents: Her mother is sick and tired of the trouble Gin is constantly in, and isn't afraid to take it out on her.
  • Color-Coded Eyes: Her eyes are bright green, and her power has the potential to be game breaking.
  • Jumped at the Call: As early as the Kyoto trip in book 1, she showed a need to search for adventure.
  • Magic Wand: She received one in Chapter 20 of Book 1; it has a clover shape on the end.
  • Meaningful Name: Her given name, "Gin", means "silver", which is also her hair color.
  • Parental Obliviousness: In the ultra-strict Japanese society, Gin stands out for any number of reasons, and suffered tremendous amounts of bullying for it. Her mother just tells her to stop whining and suck it up.
  • Stepford Snarker: This is the defense mechanism she's built up over the years before transferring to Mahora; she's hard to get along with because of this.

Student 24 Nakamura Sachiko

Sachiko is the quiet, serious class rep of Negi's class. However, while most class representatives are fairly social if only because it's expected of them, Sachiko is standoffish, preferring to watch others or do her own thing rather than interacting with her classmates. She also has an explosive temper that she struggles to keep under tight rein. Despite her asocial nature, she is widely looked upon by her classmates as a good, dependable class rep, if a little weird. Most of them don't know how to act around her. After the incident during the Kyoto trip, she was forced into training alongside the others who had been involved, and soon became friends with them. Her closest friends are Urashima Taro, Possum Cade, and Mochizuki Kagami.

Sachiko is highly skilled at an unusual variation of capoeira, which she has been practicing since early childhood. With this skill alone, she was initially able to defeat Urashima Taro, the recognized toughest fighter of the new class, with relative ease in spar sessions. However, as time went on and everyone else developed the ability to use magic and ki and other things, Sachiko found that she could barely cast magic and had so little ki that it was laughable. She is struggling to deal with the way those around her seem to be taking leaps ahead while she is only inching her way along.

  • Beware the Quiet Ones: As shown again and again, and learned most recently by Ayumi in chapter 1 of Book 2.
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Her combat ability is the result of years of intense training.
  • Compelling Voice: Early on during the Kyoto Arc in Book 1, classmate Miyoshi Youko claims she has a "Commanding Voice", and signs of it are seen several times.
  • Confusion Fu: Her fighting style is extremely difficult to predict.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: As displayed wonderfully in Kyoto, in chapter 12 of Book 1.
  • Dance Battler: Uses a modified form of Capoeira.
  • Fanservice: Her fighting style is almost entirely composed of spinning, handstands, and kicks, and since she's often wearing her school uniform with its pleated skirt...
  • Fantastically Indifferent: She shows a lot of this in first in Kyoto, then in Eva's resort in Book 1.
  • Finishing Move: A windpipe-crushing kick to the throat, as seen in the Kyoto arc. It's mentioned in her character story that one-shot-kill type attacks make up a large portion of the moves she was trained in.
  • Fragile Speedster: She is extremely fast, but a single good hit will take her down with ease.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Word of God says she struggles with suppressing this, though she is getting better about it.
  • Hyper-Awareness: She showed a somewhat mild version of this on the first day of the festival, when she was visiting the site of the the next day's tournament to check out the tournament grounds and other fighters. She is good enough at it to be able to work out how to defeat any person there except for one: Ku Fei. Whether her body is in good enough condition to keep up is another matter, however.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: She has a bad case of this as a result of the others undergoing training in Eva's resort developing amazing magical powers and whatnot while she...doesn't. She keeps it hidden from others, though.
  • Kick Chick: Her fighting consists almost entirely of kicks.
  • Magic Wand: She received one in Chapter 22 of Book 1; it has a star shape on the end.
  • Modesty Shorts: She starts wearing these after it's pointed out that her style makes her into a Panty Fighter if she isn't careful.
  • Nerves of Steel: She faces down a powerful youkai to help a classmate in danger without even thinking of backing down; instead, she methodically picked him apart.
  • Not So Stoic: She has a moment like this after losing her match at the tournament at the Mahora Festival in book 2; Taro and Kagami are there to help her through it.
  • One-Woman Army: Much like her classmate Urashima Taro, Sachiko has a history of defeating large groups of people all by herself.
  • Panty Fighter: She falls into this in the beginning since her fighting style involves lots of flipping and spinning, but she's recently taken to wearing Modesty Shorts under her skirt to avoid it.
  • Parental Obliviousness: Her mother remains firmly convinced that Sachiko is a perfect, pretty, helpless young Japanese woman; she has no clue Sachiko is fully capable (though not willing) of killing grown men with her capoeira skills.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She is cold and distant to everyone...except, after the festival tournament arc in Book 2, to Taro and Kagami.
  • The Team Normal: With considerable skill in capoeira and a Commanding Voice, she might stick out in a normal group...but when her training group includes Urashima Taro, Possum Cade, and Mochizuk Kagami, her abilities tend to look a little unimpressive.
  • Unfazed Everyman: Despite being a relatively normal human girl, she didn't hesitate when one of her classmates was kidnapped by youkai in Kyoto.

Student 25 Mori Kumiko

Quiet and studious, Kumiko tries to act like a normal student and seems wholly focused on her studies. Unfortunately for her, Sasaki Rina has other plans, and often drags her out on the town along with Inoue Ai. Kumiko doesn't know how to handle Rina's energy and good will, and so can't stop her when she gets excited.

In reality, Kumiko is extremely intelligent and well trained in a variety of skills, ranging from basic survival skills to parkour and even exorcism, all due to her upbringing with Ciel and the Burial Agency. Though she has little magic or ki, her skills and wide range of knowledge make her a serious threat to any supernatural entity, youkai, or demon that crosses her, and she takes it as her mission to defend her schoolmates from the shadows, even going so far as to patrol the city at night from time to time.

  • Covert Pervert: Judging by her "H" score on Kamo's 'Negi Love' chart.
  • I See Dead People: She can do this with the help of a specially prepared magic lens.
  • I Work Alone: She prefers to do things by herself, even though her growing association with Sasaki Rina and Inoue Ai threatens to override it more and more often.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her parents were both murdered.
  • Teen Genius: She doesn't draw attention to it, but her "Intelligence" score in Meet The New Class is 19. To put that in perspective, Suzuki Keiko, the acknowledged genius of the class, has a 20.

Student 26 Evangeline A.K. Mc Dowell

After being freed from her curse, she set off around the world, seeing what she could see. However, with the quick onset of boredom in spite of her new sense of freedom, the news that Negi was coming back to Mahora after a year in Tibet drew her back. She has lightened up considerably in the six years between Still Waters 2 and Still Waters 3, and has all but opened her resort to anyone who wants to train. She still sometimes challenges a newcomer just to maintain appearances, however.

Evangeline is tremendously powerful, but she's also incredibly lazy, and usually lets those who have trained under her deal with any threats or other problems that show up. She will, however, take a personal interest in things if she is insulted or one of those she considers 'her people' are injured in some way, as the ghoul Carrick learned late in Book 1, much to his dismay.

  • A Glass of Chianti: She enjoys the occasional glass of wine, and was seen in the wine tasting tent at the festival in Book 2.
  • All-Powerful Bystander: She tends to sit back and let everyone else deal with any problems that pop up. If she is called into action, however, it immediately becomes a slaughter.
  • Large Ham: She enjoys hamming it up for the new trainees.
  • The Mentor: She functions as a mentor for virtually the entire cast.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Best shown in the chapter with the duel between her and Yuuna in Book 2.
  • Phantom Zone: Her resort is where most of the characters train.
  • Renowned Selective Mentor: While she allows pretty much everybody to use her resort, she only gives personal training to those who manage to impress her.
  • Shipper on Deck: She wants Negi and Misa, her two favorite apprentices, to hook up.
  • Shrouded in Myth: Everyone has heard stories of her, but few have ever met her.
  • Sink or Swim Mentor: She threw three half trained fourteen year old girls into combat with an extremely powerful centuries-old vampire who had already kidnapped one of their classmates without even telling them what they were facing.
  • Story-Breaker Power: She doesn't use it mostly because she thinks it'd be boring, and wants to see what all these people who've been freeloading in her resort are capable of.
  • Walking the Earth: She did this for a time between Still Waters 2 and Still Waters 3; she came back.

Student 27 Kondo Kai

The drummer for Ayumi's band, Kai is quick, intelligent, and has a great sense of style. As Ayumi's oldest friend in Mahora, she feels partly responsible for keeping Ayumi out of too much trouble, but often just lets Kara handle it. Kai doesn't like getting too close to other people, so she deliberately keeps them at arms length through inoffensive methods if possible.

Kai is an oni with high levels of strength and stamina, which has helped her greatly as she works to become the best drummer she can be. She has very little ability with magic or ki, but is slowly learning some basic rituals to draw power for spellcasting in addition to practicing with various weapons and even straight martial arts, and is able to keep up with her friends as their skills improve, if just barely.

  • Albinos Are Freaks: Was dubbed "The White Oni", a being that the Oni fear would bring doom to their kind. She lost her parents because of this status.
  • All Drummers Are Animals: Subverted; she's the most down to earth member of the No Name Band.
  • Horned Humanoid: She is an oni; she always wears a hat when possible, with her hair wrapped up around her two stubby little horns underneath to hide them.
  • Interspecies Romance: Possible with Nevon Bayle.
  • Leg Focus: Her long legs are mentioned a few times.
  • Magic Wand: She received one in Chapter 20 of Book 1; it has a wing shape on the end.
  • Mighty Glacier: As an oni, she's naturally very strong. She's not very fast, though.
  • Mundane Utility: She uses her oni stamina to...play the drums in a rock band.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her parents were both killed because of her status as "The White Oni", who is supposed to bring doom to the Oni race.
  • Sacred First Kiss: She had hers stolen by the youkai boy Nevon Bayle.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: She's an oni, and occasionally displays far more stamina and strength than a girl of her size should have.
  • Willfully Weak: She refuses to use her full strength as an oni because she's afraid of hurting someone.

Student 28 Urashima Taro

A girl with a boy's name, It's obvious Taro isn't normal. And with her reputation among the criminal element on the streets of Mahora, her skills as a fighter are legendary, rapidly approaching the old stories about Ku Fei. Her fearsome reputation combined with her temper, however, also works against her...she has few friends even among her classmates; for the longest time her only friend was Possum Cade. That aspect of her life is slowly changing, however, with her training in Eva's resort, as Taro and her fellow trainees have begun to grow close due to the fact that they spend so much time together. Despite her reputation, Taro is actually just a shy, awkward girl who's used to being teased for name to the point where she sometimes starts swinging at the first mention of it. She also has a deeply hidden girly side...something she usually keeps hidden deep inside, as she's afraid of the reactions she might get if she showed up wearing a dress one day.

Taro possesses the same bloodline ability as Urashima Taro of Love Hina: a sort of semi-immortality enhanced by unconscious ki manipulation and a natural healing factor. She has access to a great deal of ki, but little magic; this doesn't bother her, however, as she is content to remain a fighter...it's something she's already very good at. She has undergone extensive training in Eva's resort, and also receives training under Kagurazaka Asuna.

  • Batter Up!: Her signature weapon is a baseball bat.
  • Battle Aura: When she gets really worked up, her ki will start to show in an aura around her.
  • Berserk Button: The fact that she has a boy's name.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: She loves to fight, but doesn't seem to hate or even really dislike any of the people she fights.
  • Bully Hunter: Even though almost everyone else starts out scared of her because of her unsociable personality and her reputation as a fighter, she hates bullies and enjoys beating them up.
  • Chase Fight: She's good at these; so good, in fact, that she's managed to beat several large groups of attackers and even an entire motorcycle gang by leading them across town in a long running fight.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The majority of challengers meet this fate. Of the rare few who don't most of them are capable of doing this to Taro.
  • Embarrassing First Name: 'Taro' is a boy's name.
  • Free-Range Children: She seems to have no problem getting out of the dorms to wander the streets at night for the purpose of picking fights with the local riffraff.
  • Friendless Background: Due to the way she was shifted between families constantly until she came to Mahora, it's quite possible that Possum is her first real friend.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Taro is a boy's name in Japan.
  • Healing Factor: A legacy of her Urashima bloodline.
  • Hot-Blooded: Not as extreme as many of the examples on that page, but she is quite hot blooded when out on her own.
  • Informed Loner: At first her only friend was Possum, but now that she is commonly seen going around with the class rep, Rally, and Kagami, the other students are finally loosening up around her to the extent that someone who didn't know the character would never have known she was a loner in the first place.
  • Little Miss Badass: She routinely goes out at night with a baseball bat in order to lure out criminals. Has been known to beat up grown men who are known for being great fighters. Some time ago, she beat up a 100+ strong biker gang called the Saitama Devils. All of them.
  • Loners Are Freaks: Everyone certainly believes she's not normal.
  • Magic Wand: She received one in Chapter 20 of Book 1; it is pink and has a heart shape on the end. Taro hates it.
  • Mighty Glacier: She's strong, but she's not very fast.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: She is by far the most misunderstood student in the new class; almost everyone thinks she's a bully/delinquent/outright criminal due to her behavior, her reputation of getting into fights with kids from other classes, and her reputation in town. She's just an incredibly lonely girl who's been transferred from place to place all her life due to her inability to stay quiet when a bully is causing trouble, and her idea of lively social interaction is playing videogames with her best friend and classmate Possum Cade.
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: She carries a medallion that belonged to her mother; it has a turtle on the front.
  • Parental Abandonment: Her mother died in childbirth, while her father is said to be unknown.
  • Red Baron: They call her...the Street Sweeper. Not nearly as badass, but considering that this is the same place that came up with the name "Death Glasses Takahata"...
  • The Rival: She sees herself and Sachiko as rivals; Sachiko's the first person her age who's beaten her in a fight.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Her intro goes on for quite a while before it's revealed she's a girl, though the joke falls flat if the reader isn't aware that Taro is pretty much exclusively a boy's name.
  • Sarashi: She wears one to flatten/support her rather ample chest; Word of God says she's a little embarrassed about it.
  • Shrouded in Myth: She acquired this status before the story begins by defeating an entire gang of bikers with Possum Cade's help.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Only ever briefly glimpsed, but there are several instances where she thinks about wearing a dress or looking pretty, and even shows up at the end of Book 2 wearing a girly outfit for a short time.

Student 29 Rally Wheeler

Cute, shy, and more than a little dense, she is nevertheless devoted to her older sister Chachamaru. And cats. She really loves cats.

Her body, much like Chachamaru's, has been strengthened and streamlined. Unlike Chachamaru, however, her body has been designed with heavy duty artillery fire in mind. Due to this, she has been outfitted with 'more guns than some small armies', as has been said. She is capable of a great deal of destruction, from small arms fire to railguns to gatling guns and lasers and even heavy cannon fire, with all the necessary ammo stored in a pocket dimension connected directly to the weapons in question.

  • Berserk Button: Hurt Chachamaru, and you're going to pay, as the robot F7D found out in the short story A Robot's Life
  • Beware the Nice Ones: You don't want to mess with a girl who carries around more military firepower than some small countries have in their entire arsenals, even if she is one of the nicest people around.
  • Gatling Good: Several of her built in weapons are of this type.
  • Kind Hearted Cat Lover: As seen in her character story in Meet The New Class, when she is told to start a journal, half of what she writes is about a stray cat she found. And petted. And petted again.
  • More Dakka: This is her response to an enemy's appearance.
  • Replacement Goldfish: This is what she was created as; her 'father' died before she came online, however.
  • Shrinking Violet: For a robot carrying so much artillery, she is ridiculously shy.
  • Unusual Ears: As her body is heavily based on Chachamaru's, she also has special attachments covering the sides of her head, where a human's ears would be.
  • Younger Than They Look: Being a robot, she's actually 6 at the time of Still Waters 3 Book 1 even though she looks like the age the rest of the class is supposed to be.
