The Mayor
Gustave Labarbe
Voiced by: Claude Joseph and Michel Modo (1992 series)
Gustave Labarbe, the mayor of Champignac, is quite protective of his village, and for this reason is easily angry when there's anything anormal-and unfortunately for him, it happens quite often. The mayor is then quick to blame the Count, and to his credit, he's usually right.- Adapted Out: Along with his fellow citizens of Champignac, he's absent from the 2006 animated series.
- Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: Like the Count, his tastes in clothing are deliberately early 20th century, to support the old fashioned look of the village.
- Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": He had No Name Given for ten years until, in a encyclopedia published in an issue of ''Spirou magazine'', Franquin revealed it was Gustave Labarbe. It has been used only once in comics since. In Qui arrêtera Cyanure?, an order poster is stuck on the village walls, and the signature is Gustave Labarbe. This last name literally means "beard", but actually, it refers to the expression "La barbe!" used when something especially dull is described. And God knows how the mayor is The Bore every time he indulges in a Nap-Inducing Speak (read: often).
- Large and in Charge: He's overweight, and the ruler.
- Mayor Pain: He's all ready to literally take Torches and Pitchforks each time an unexplained event happens, and head up to the castle, thinking it's a consequence of the Count latest's invention. He's not prone to tolerance in general, personally admonishing citizens who don't stop at the first Champignac's red traffic light, and thinking that the "wizard" who is causing troubles must be a gypsy traveler who arrived recently in The wizard of Culdesac.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: In his good days. When the actual nature of the problem of the day is revealed, he tries his best to find a solution, and even make amends if he misblamed the Count in the process.
- Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: The mayor loves to make long, extensive speeches. In fact, even in casual dialogue, he overcomplicates his vocabulary, to the point that he mismatches proverbs or citations.
- Shrine to Self: The mayor considers the village as this as he often erect statues of himself in the center, Our Founder style. But sooner or later (usually when it was just inaugurated), the Count's latest invention will unwillingly destroy it.
- Windbag Politician: The mayor is widely feared for his entirely improvised and metaphor-breaking digressions.
Duplumier
Voiced by: Gilbert Lévy (1992 series)
Duplumier is the Mayor's secretary, and is usually for this reason seen with him.- Awesome Anachronistic Apparel: Once again, Duplumier is always dressed in The Edwardian Era fashion.
- Failure Is the Only Option: Duplumier is often seen purchasing or using a new vehicle he just bought, but it quickly ends up destroyed in an accident.
- Last-Name Basis: He's always addressed by his last name.
- Meaningful Name: His name means "pencil box" and he is City Hall's secretary.
- La Résistance: The Enigma volume of Champignac reveals that along with Dupilon and the mayor, he used to be part of it during WWII.
Dupilon
Célestin Dupilon
Voiced by: Gilbert Lévy (1992 series)
Célestin Dupilon (Pessel in the English version) was once the pharmacist (or veterinary) of Champignac. Since he's retired, he give himself full time to alcohol, and is seen drunk all the time.- The Alcoholic: Dupilon is never seen sober, always with a bottle of wine in his hand, and is considered as the local drunkard.
- Alcohol Hic: His speeches are often punctuated with these.
- Cassandra Truth: He's often the only one to see the villain(s) of the day, and/or what they did exactly, tell it to the others-and no one ever believes Dupilon, thinking he have visions due to being drunk.
- Cloudcuckoolander: He's comically clueless about what's going on, as his inebriation prevents him from realizing danger. For instance, he never noticed the giant jungle that suddenly grew on Champignac in Alerte aux zorkons, and repeatedly tried to "open'' a giant fruit, thinking it was his car.
Jérôme
Jérôme is (apparently the only) policeman in Champignac. He appeared first in Z comme Zorglub, recruited against his will as a zorglman. In L'ombre du Z, he paralyzes all inhabitants by reflex. Finally, in Le rayon noir, he has Vito Cortizone, then a prisoner, under his care.
- Brainwashed: Poor Jérôme, in Z comme Zorglub. The latter zorlgwaved him and recruited him as a zorglman.
- Only One Name: He's always addressed to with his first name.
- Police Are Useless: In Z comme Zorglub and L'ombre du Z, he shall protect the population from Zorglub. In Le rayon noir, he shall keep Vito Cortizone behind bars and recognize Spirou despite his ethnicity just changed. Jérôme failed at all of that.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: In L'ombre du Z, Jérôme is the only zorglman still Brainwashed, and he go on with the last order he received, freezing any person in sight in Champignac. He's an unwitting antagonist, and is only stopped when he eats sleeping pills, thinking they were Food Pills.
