    Frog Defense
A group of Frogs loyal to the Crimsonwing cultists, fought collectively as the boss of the Salt Wastes.
  • Barrier Warrior: They protect their deck with a decent Barrier All each turn. Combined with the armor, they're fairly durable.
  • Degraded Boss: In the postgame, they appear as a regular enemy in Healed Dawnglow.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: It's implied that these are the same frogs Tanit won over to the Crimsonwings' side all the way back in Golden Crown Village.
  • Fat Bastard: The Frog Defense's leader is described as having a "rotund belly", which he uses to block your way. He's also involved with a dangerous cult.
  • The Fundamentalist: Par for the course for a bunch of frogs who were converted to the Crimsonwing cause.
  • Heavily Armored Mook: Eleven of their 15 cards have Armor, which they can Enhance at random each turn.
  • Status Buff: Enhance Armor and Empower, each applied to one random card in the deck per turn.
  • Trans Nature: Although they are frogs, they are described as being "Angels in spirit", a description not unlike that of the loyal Crimsonwing frog, Kachina.
  • Underground Monkey: Like all the bosses, the Frog Defense uses a special card with not-so-new art. They use the "Mecha Hammer Creation", which uses the same art as several other unobtainable cards like "Fortified Horror".
  • Wolfpack Boss: In-Universe, the spirits of Lev's closest allies fight the player alongside the Frog Defense. However, this doesn't happen in the boss battle itself — if it did, they'd be more or less impossible to take out.
  • You All Look Familiar: The leader of the Frog Defense forces is depictes as looking exactly like the Frog Emperor, as none of them are all that important to the plot and only really exist to slow the player down as they try to break into the Abyss.

    Truestrike
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spellstonetruestrike.png
Fallen Gladiator
The champion and the boss of Gladius Arena, called upon by Batara to fight the player in one final match.
  • Anti-Armor: Despite using it quite liberally in his boss fight, Truestrike's skillset as a card has Pierce, which breaks through enemy Armor.
  • CCG Importance Dissonance: While he's one tough boss In-Universe and comes after the likes of Reks and Xerkahn in the arena itself, he's not a Champion card or even a legendary — merely an epic-rarity card! It's especially glaring because every other boss besides him and the Assassin are legendary, a Champion, or even a Mythic. In Batara's boss fight, however, he appears in the deck as the much stronger "Fallen Gladiator Truestrike", which is a legendary.
  • Counter-Attack: The card of him gets Backlash, dealing a little bit back when he is targeted with skills like Bolt and Frostbreath.
  • Eye-Obscuring Hat: Wears a strange sort of eyeless mask-crown... thing atop his head, which prevents anyone from seeing his eyes.
  • Flat Character: He isn't given much characterization beyond being a powerful and chivalrous arena champion.
  • Rule of Three: He's fought in the third and last round of enemies Batara sends your way in the Gladius Arena.
  • Status Buff: As a boss, his entire arsenal is made up of status buffs — he imbues all of his cards with Armor, one card per turn with Daze, and he can also directly buff one card's Attack with Empower.
  • Tiered by Name: The card of him is first referred to as "Noble Truestrike", "Virtuous Truestrike", and finally "Holy Truestrike".
  • Underground Monkey: Like Razi, he uses the "Celestial Statue" card as a boss, which uses the same art as the common-rarity "Angelic Warrior". He, in turn, becomes one of Batara's special boss-exclusive cards, "Fallen Gladiator Truestrike".

    Yakov
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sscrimsonwingyakov.png
"I hear your voice from afar, yet with neither name nor form can I answer such prayer."
"And let us find peace in the realm between the factions of Aether, Chaos, and Wyld. Unite in our power of wings, and soar unto the heavens."

An ominous hooded Avian of the Order of Crimsonwings. He's first spotted attacking the three orbs of the Celestial Vault, where he is fought as the area's boss.

  • Ax-Crazy: His devotion to Lev compels him to do whatever it takes to bring her back, but he is also somewhat insane beyond that — completely uncaring of the casualties of sinking the Celestial Vault, and unwilling to face the reality of his defeat even as it stares him in the beak.
  • Barrier Warrior: In his boss battle, he casts Barrier All over his deck for a little extra protection.
  • Boss Subtitles: "Hero's Blessed, Yakov".
  • Degraded Boss: Long after his defeat, the boss version of him reappears as a normal enemy in the postgame of Skyhaven and Frigore, completely removed from prior context.
  • Fantastic Racism: Doesn't seem to like Elementals very much, considering he's all too willing to send their Vault crashing to the ground for the sake of the Crimsonwings' power.
Yakov: Wingless creatures have no right to flight, now be judged by the Order of Crimsonwings!
  • Fantastic Slurs: Uses the word "wingless" as if it were a racial slur against non-Avians.
  • Fragile Speedster: As a boss, Yakov's deck is very fast and destructive, but aside from protection from Barrier, it doesn't have much in the way of defenses.
  • The Fundamentalist: A fervent worshiper of the Forgotten Hero, Yakov's extreme measures to resurrect her and his impassioned offer to convert Magistrate Agni to the cause make him seem like a total nutcase. It doesn't help that he declares the player a "champion of the Void" and vows to defeat you in the Hero's name after he is defeated.
  • Insane Troll Logic: After he is defeated and his plans fall through, he throws a fit and calls the player a "Champion of the Void". The very same player who was celebrated throughout Arcantica for stopping the Void.
  • In the Hood: Wears a black hooded cloak that makes him look like an executioner.
  • Knight of Cerebus: Yakov's appearance in the Celestial Vault kicks off the second major Story Arc of the game, and he is crueler than the vengeful Xerkahn or the malfunctioning Scyer.
  • Mind over Matter: As briefly mentioned in his boss fight, his temporary empowering by the forces inside the portal grants him the power to telepathically toss Magistrate Agni around.
  • Skeletons in the Coat Closet: Downplayed. His clothes have a visible skull on them, but not much else.
  • The Social Darwinist: Yakov professes this belief as he explains that he doesn't care what will happen to his followers — he needs the Celestial Vault's orbs gone.
Yakov: The strong will survive, and the weak will die. It matters not if they are our own.
  • Sore Loser: His reaction to failing to properly unseal Lev is to curse the player, calling them a "champion of the Void", and request greater power from the portal. He also uses his newfound telepathy to throw Magistrate Agni around out of spite for refusing his offer to join the cause.
  • Status Buff: The enemy "Crimsonwing Apostle", which uses his sprite, uses Empower All and Imbue All Armor on the deck each turn to grant his deck a little more attack and defense. In his boss fight proper, he can enhance the strength of one of his cards' Empower each turn, which isn't good since more than half his deck has the skill.
  • Technicolor Fire: The lantern that Yakov holds radiates a white fire that even the narration describes as strange. During his boss battle, he invokes an extradimensional power that causes him to positively explode with these flames.
  • Token Evil Teammate: Nearly all of the other Crimsonwings are less violent and destructive than he is, with several of them being outright nice to the heroes unless they're provoked in some way.
  • Underground Monkey: His boss battle has a card called "Blightwind Whisper", which uses the same art as the premium epic "Sylph Drifter".
  • Villainous Breakdown: He flies into a rage when it turns out Lev was never sealed in the Celestial Vault at all, and he even punches a wall before he regains his composure and engages the player in a boss battle.
  • We Can Rule Together: Offers Magistrate Agni the chance to gain power from the Crimsonwings as a survivor of the Void, as well as work alongside him as they once did in Red Feather Village. This offer is refused.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: In his boss battle, he gets souped-up when a ray of light and darkness shoots out and hits him, imbuing him with even greater power.
  • You're Insane!: Cedric says this word-for-word when Yakov reveals that he doesn't care if his fellow Avians die as long as the Crimsonwings can have the orbs.

    Razi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/razithefallenlight.png
The Fallen Light
"Greetings, knowledge seekers."

Caretaker of the Arcane Library hidden within the Mystic Library of Skyhaven, Razi awaits those who are willing to "seek the truth". She has a wealth of knowledge pertaining to Lev, the Crimsonwings' forgotten hero, and she will protect that knowledge with everything she has. The boss of Skyhaven.

  • Ancient Keeper: A more outwardly youthful example of the trope, but still counts.
  • Berserk Button: Do not attempt to use the library's books against the Crimsonwings, or she will destroy the entire library to keep the knowledge safe.
  • Boss Subtitles: "Razi, Whisper Worshipper".
  • Collapsing Lair: When Malchior reveals he's found a book full of sensitive information, Razi attempts to destroy the entire library so he won't be able to use it to harm the rest of the Crimsonwings. As the party attempts to escape, she gives chase and even engages the player in a boss fight.
Razi: I see you have no intention of leaving the continent. If the knowledge here will be used against us Crimsonwings, then the library is better off destroyed! You have already wasted precious time here while our allies are busy. Now, be trapped beneath the rubble!
  • Cryptically Unhelpful Answer: When Yuriel asks her about what "guiding" people to "the truth" means, her answer is rather lacking.
Yuriel: Are you saying that you'll help us get farther? What awaits us at the end?
Razi: It is the truth that awaits those who are worthy.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After the Crimsonwings are disbanded, she becomes a Support Party Member in Gladius Scriptorium.
  • Degraded Boss: Her boss incarnation appears as one of the enemies in a postgame level of Skyhaven, far removed from her original context.
  • Expy: Of Wan Shi Tong. She's the Ancient Keeper of a long-hidden library who ends up trying to kill the heroes to keep that library's knowledge out of the "wrong" hands, but only after they get some crucial exposition.
  • Fallen Angel: Implied by her title as a Champion, "Razi the Fallen Light".
  • Fog Feet: It's hard to tell where her dress ends and a cloud of pink fog begins. This is no fault of her card artwork, as the same effect is used for her boss portrait.
  • Heavily Armored Mook: Razi herself has Armor as one of her skills, despite having little visible armor on her. As a boss, she imbues her entire deck with Armor as one of many strong Status Buffs.
  • He Knows Too Much: To protect the knowledge in her library, she causes the library to collapse with the heroes inside it.
Razi: Knowledge is meant to be shared, not hoarded. But it can also be a dangerous thing, if it falls in the wrong hands.
  • Improbable Hairstyle: The left side of her hair hangs loose at about shoulder length, but the right side is done up like Princess Leia's iconic hairstyle.
  • Infinity -1 Sword: She's one of the Champion cards, and among the first Champions to ever be released. She's the first to be related to the current plotline.
  • Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: Is never seen out of her long diaphanous dress, but she's one tough boss.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Not one of the cards Razi uses have more than 2 delay, and thanks to her many, many Status Buffs, they all hit hard. This also applies to her as a Champion, being a quick 1-delay card with an absolutely beastly high Empower skill.
  • Meaningful Name: Her name is derived from the Archangel Raziel, who is said to have granted Adam and Eve a book full of all the secret knowledge in the world to help them better understand God.
  • Mistaken for Granite: She is encased in stone when the party first encounters her in the library, but she breaks out of it to guide them through the archives. This ability has allowed her to survive in stasis for far longer than other angels.
  • Ms. Exposition: She's the one who explains the backstory of the Forgotten Hero, whom the Crimsonwings are trying to revive.
  • Prophet Eyes: When she blocks the party's escape route from the crumbling library during her boss fight, her eyes go completely white.
  • Status Buff: Her main strategy is buffing the hell out of her entire deck with Empower, Heal, and Imbue Armor. As a Champion, her Legion and high Empower are her main claims to fame.
  • Support Party Member: In Gladius Scriptorium she can Bolt all enemies once per turn.
  • Underground Monkey: Two cards she uses as a boss are the "Celestial Statue" and "Divine Statue", which use the same artwork as the Angelic Warrior and Luminous Knight.

    Kachina
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spellstonekachina.png
The Dreamer
"The Dawnglow Frogs know me as a dreamer. I have heard the whispers of another world."
A frog from Dawnglow Swamp who meets Cedric and the player after they crash-land in Golden Crown Village. She is the Frog Emperor's Dreamer, a position that involves providing advice and running errands. However, she has an agenda of her own, and she is secretly allied with the Crimsonwings' High Priestess Tanit. She is fought as the main boss of Golden Crown Village.
  • Boss Subtitles: "Kachina, Transcended".
  • Combat Medic: She is known for powerful Counter Attacks, but once she activates, she casts Heal All every turn. As a boss, she casts Heal All on all the Frogs in her deck and Bolt All on everything in yours.
  • Counter-Attack: Her main claim to fame as a Champion is dishing out extremely high Vengeance damage before she activates.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After the Crimsonwings are disbanded, she becomes a Support Party Member in Gladius Scriptorium.
  • Degraded Boss: In the battle against High Priestess Tanit, her Champion card appears in the boss's deck. She also shows up a few more times, including the Lightning Boss battle against Caesar.
  • Enlightened Antagonist: Her contact with the dream world caused her to awaken to the Crimsonwings' cause.
  • Evil All Along: She is actually one of the Crimsonwings, plotting to free the High Priestess Tanit.
  • Evil Chancellor: She's an advisor to the Frog Emperor, but she only wants the dream elixir so she can summon the Crimsonwings' high priestess.
  • Harmless Freezing: As a Champion, she has the Freeze skill, though her niche is more of a defensive counterplay.
  • Improbable Weapon User: She wields a shield and a dreamcatcher, of all things.
  • Infinity -1 Sword: First introduced as part of Golden Crown Village's Frog-based events, she is obtainable as a Champion.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Greatly admires Cedric and his legendary career, and even offers him a chance to return to Dawnglow.
  • The Mole: She's secretly working for the Crimsonwings' High Priestess, and is searching for a way to free her.
  • Prayer Pose: In the dream world, she is always doing this, just like the image of the High Priestess Tanit in the temple outside. There's very good reason for that.
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: Her body is dark grey and her eyes are red. In the dream world, where she's revealed to be working for the Crimsonwings, she also grows her own pair of red and black angel wings.
  • Remember the New Guy?: She's introduced as a frog of some renown with the ear of the Emperor of Dawnglow, but she is never mentioned before the crash landing in Golden Crown Village.
  • Status Buff: As a boss, she can enhance the strength of one of her cards' Corrosion. This only works on a few of her cards — "Fatal Stonesteps", "Wrathstomp Irontusk", and "Tempest Caller" — but it is enough to make them rather annoying.
  • The Stoic: She takes the conversion of the Dawnglow Lilypad division to the Crimsonwings' side very calmly. Probably because she's been won over to the same side, by the same High Priestess no less.
  • Support Party Member: In Gladius Scriptorium, she can heal your deck a little each turn.
  • Underground Monkey: Like Razi, she uses a card called "Divine Statue", a powerful Angel card which uses the same art as "Luminous Knight".
  • Winged Humanoid: Within the dream world, she grows an impressive pair of Razi-like red and black wings.
Kachina: In body, I may appear as a simple Frog. In spirit, I am a Crimsonwing.
  • Zerg Rush: Not her deck so much, but in the dream world she attempts to overwhelm the player with a throng of Frogs and Avians. The enemies have no end — defeating a Frog spawns an Avian, and vice versa.

    Agatha
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mythwardenagatha.png
Myth Warden
The third and final seer of the Forgotten Island, located in the ruins. She was once the leader of the Rhynio, an insect tribe who raised the Crimsonwings' hero from birth. She later returns in Distorted Beetleton as the one who opened the portal to the spirit world, and is subsequently fought as the level boss.
  • Barrier Warrior: She can cast Barrier All as a champion, but it only works on Insects. She gets Dualstrike, however, which mitigates this by granting those insects a much stronger barrier every few turns. As a boss, one of her skills is a single Barrier of considerable strength.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Initially seeming like a helpful ally, Agatha later reappears in Distorted Beetleton as the summoner of the spirit portal, having defected to the Crimsonwings in an effort to save her daughter.
  • Boss Subtitles: "Forgettable Elder, Agatha".
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: As a Champion, she gets the coveted Hex All skill. And since she gets Dualstrike as well, she can sometimes use it twice in one turn.
  • Degraded Boss: Reappears as a regular enemy in Forgotten Island, now removed from her original context.
  • Dirty Coward: Rayne accuses her of being this once it's revealed that she was the one who opened the spirit portal in Distorted Beetleton.
  • Gentle Touch vs. Firm Hand: The Gentle Touch to Rayne's Firm Hand, and it's definitely portrayed as a bad thing. Agatha is so unwilling to lay a hand on Lev, her daughter, that she joins the Crimsonwings.
  • Heavily Armored Mook: Not her, but all of her cards as a boss (sans Gnatha Killapede and Blightwind Whisper) have Armor, which she can Enhance at random each turn.
  • Ignored Epiphany: During her boss fight, it seems like she has visible remorse for her actions, but she still carries on the battle, seemingly having decided that she's come too far.
  • Infinity -1 Sword: She's one of the legendary Champions you can obtain. Interestingly, she was not added to the game until after the main story was completed.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: It turns out she's the adoptive mother of Lev, the Forgotten Hero.
  • Moth Menace: She's somewhat moth-like, and opens a portal to the spirit world in Beetleton Bunker as part of the Crimsonwings' plan.
  • Ms. Exposition: Like Razi before her, she is a powerful individual with key information about the Crimsonwings, namely that they plan to reopen the Void to unseal Lev, which involves freeing her companions from the spirit world.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: In the second phase of her boss battle, the narration notes that Agatha has "wavering resolve" and seems visibly frightened by what she's about to do. Unfortunately, this isn't enough to stop her from attacking you anyway.
  • The Paranoiac: She's hesitant at first to drink the Spriggan Seer's nectar, convinced that Ursurio and the others are trying to poison her. And she's so worried about the potential harm to her daughter that she's willing to follow the Crimsonwings' goal.
  • Playing with Fire: She's introduced as being able to control a "magical flame" to attack her enemies, and as a Support Party Member she grants Emberhide to your deck. She doesn't do this as a Champion, however.
  • Pushover Parents: Such a pushover, in fact, that she is willing to ally with a cult that will cause the Void to return in order to summon the Forgotten Hero... because said hero is actually Agatha's adoptive daughter, and she doesn't want anyone to hurt her child.
  • Status Buff: As a boss, she uses Imbue Berserk and Enhance Armor.
  • Straw Hypocrite: She thinks the Crimsonwings' plan is insane. So why is she going along with them anyway? She doesn't want anybody to harm her daughter, who happens to be the very Hero they're trying to summon back.
  • Treacherous Advisor: Of a sort. While she isn't really evil, she encourages the player to stop the Crimsonwings' plan, only to further those plans herself because she wants what is best for her daughter.
  • Underground Monkey: Her boss deck uses the Blightwind Whisper, just like Yakov and the Emerald Amarok. It uses the same art as the Sylph Drifter.
  • Walking Spoiler: Her role in the plot is much more important than it first seems, and her betrayal is likely to come out of left field.
  • Wham Line: "The Forgotten Hero is my daughter. Even though her purpose has been corrupted, I cannot abandon her so easily."

The Three Companions

    Tanit
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spellstonetanit.png
"We have nothing to fear in sweet harmony."
"The High Priestess was the first to dream. If you are worthy, you will step out of her realm unchanged."
A high priestess of the Crimsonwings who has set up operations in the remains of Red Feather Valley. The so-called "first to dream", the player can face her as one of three secret bosses necessary to obtain Mortagan, Grave General. She can be fought in Golden Crown Village.

    Batara
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vindicatorbataraspellstone.png
"I was not the one who started the war, but I will be the one to end it."
Some cower from war, but he embraced it: an opportunity to find justice from those who had razed his hometown. His hatred united those to his cause, but even his allies grew to fear his so-called justice.
A proud warrior from the Gladius Arena, the former scriptorium of the Divine Crest angels. In truth, he is one of Lev's three closest allies, and a commander who united the Redfeather avians, the Rhynio insects, and the Divine Crest angels into the Crimsonwings. He later appears as the superboss of Gladius Arena, with Mortagan's Spellstone as the ultimate reward for beating him.
  • Blood Knight: To the point where he became a fallen angel, as his people, the Divine Crest, are a pacifistic race.
  • Boss Subtitles: "Batara, Blood Reprisal".
  • Combat Referee: Throughout the Gladius Arena's tournament, he does not take an active role in the fighting himself, preferring to leave that to his fellow fallen angels.
  • Counter-Attack: As a boss, twelve out of the fifteen cards in his deck have Backlash, which deals a fair amount of damage back to anything that tries to target said card with offensive skills. Since said "offensive skills" only include things like Hex, Bolt, Freeze, and Frostbreath, it effectively shuts down any and all magic-based builds.
  • Defeat Means Friendship: After the Crimsonwings are disbanded, he becomes a Support Party Member in Gladius Scriptorium.
  • Dreadlock Warrior: Wears his hair in dreadlocks, and is a powerful, badass Fallen Angel.
  • Extra Turn: As a Champion, one of Batara's skills is Dualstrike, which lets him attack twice per turn every couple of turns.
  • Fallen Angel: Although he is an angel, he has some demonic features as well. This is likely because his warlike nature did not sit well with the pacifistic Divine Crest. He has several of them at his beck and call, which he uses as Mooks in the arena.
Batara: The Divine Crest do not believe in fighting, even for the sake of survival. And so I became Fallen, to defend those who would not.
  • Fantastic Racism: He doesn't like the Goblins very much, but he's somewhat justified as they were some of his first enemies as a Crimsonwing general.
Batara: Time passes but the goblins remain the same. Bloodthirsty malcontents whose reach towards the sun leaves them burned. Yet strike down one leader, and another takes their place.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: The Fighter to Tanit's Mage and Formos's Thief. Batara is a mid-speed fighter who lives for battle, and can only be successfully overcome by fighting him on his level (i.e. without any magic, which he will harshly punish you for attempting to use).
  • Healing Factor: As a playable Champion, one of Batara's skills is Regenerate.
  • Horned Humanoid: He's technically a demon as well as an angel, and has the horns to prove it.
  • I Fight for the Strongest Side!: Refuses to help the heroes until they can prove their strength to him by fighting in the arena. And once they do this, he reveals his true colors and has the arena's champion attack them.
  • I Just Want to Be Free: Though, as one of the Forgotten Hero's three companions, you're obligated to deny him that freedom at all costs.
  • Infinity -1 Sword: His Champion card was released during the first half of Gladius Arena's campaign. As a superboss, he uses two premium Champions, "Dina the Iridescent" and "Medusozoa, the Immortal".
  • Klingon Scientists Get No Respect: If Batara is to be believed, his hunger for battle is so alien to the Divine Crest angels' pacifist culture that it caused him to fall from grace.
  • Mage Killer: His deck is designed to hard-counter the usual strategy of using Hex, Bolt, Frostbreath, and Freeze. Try it, and you're asking for Batara to Backlash your deck into oblivion. On top of that, his entire deck is granted huge amounts of Ward, meaning even if it wasn't a lethal mistake to do so, his cards wouldn't take any damage from it anyway.
  • Meaningful Name: "Batara" is an old-fashioned Indonesian word meaning "king" or "deva".
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: His Boss Subtitles, "Blood Reprisal", are pretty damn menacing. Same goes for one of his boss-exclusive Underground Monkeys, "Servant in Silenced Death".
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: According to the game's internal data, he's an angel-demon-samurai.
  • Obviously Evil: He's a rather frightening-looking Fallen Angel with a predominantly red color scheme and a great love of battle. Is it any stretch of the imagination to believe he'd be in on the Crimsonwing conspiracy?
  • Our Angels Are Different: Despite being classified as an angel, he has demonic red horns to go with them. This is because he's a fallen angel.
  • Poisonous Person: As a Superboss, he grants Poison to all of his cards.
  • Puzzle Boss: Batara's boss fight is expressly designed to punish any player who thinks they can simply Hexbolt him to death the usual way. To beat him, you need to rely on a strategy
  • Red Is Violent: Has a predominantly red color scheme, with red clothes, red and black wings, red horns, and even ruddy skin. He's also a warrior who lives for battle, to the point where it got him kicked out of heaven.
  • Resistant to Magic: As a Superboss, his entire deck gets imbued with an extremely high Ward 25, which is about twice the amount of Ward usually seen on any card in the game.
  • Status Buff: He can jack up the Backlash of one of his cards by a whopping 44 points. On top of that, he imbues his entire deck with Ward and Poison.
  • Status Infliction Attack: One of his skills as a Champion is Daze, which decreases the enemy's Attack whenever Batara hits them. As a boss, he gives his entire deck the ability to poison your cards on contact.
  • Superboss: A secret, extremely powerful boss fought in Gladius Arena.
  • Support Party Member: In Gladius Scriptorium, he can give Ward to the entire party.
  • Underground Monkey: He's a little more conservative about this than other superbosses like Tanit and Mythic Master Bluefire, but seven of his cards are boss-exclusive, with the same art as other cards.
  • Wham Line: "It's regrettable how history chooses to remember. I unified the Avian Redfeathers, the Insect Rhynio, my Angel brothers of Crest, into one banner: the Crimsonwings."

    Formos Ebonclaw
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/spellstoneebonclaw.png
"The Ebonclaw are sworn both to silence and in silencing."
"His goal in life was simple: to protect the Elder's daughter, even if she was an adopted human. Sworn in both service and silence, they say that Ebonclaw could strike so fast that no one even saw him move."
A silent bodyguard of the Forgotten Hero, and the third and last of her closest allies. Fought as the infamously challenging superboss of Distorted Beetleton, the reward for defeating Formos is Mortagan's Core, the final piece of the Mythic Mortagan.
  • Badass and Child Duo: He and Lev were one of these when she was younger, with himself as the Badass. She soon turned out to be plenty badass in her own right, however.
  • The Berserker: While he is always silent, Formos gets Berserk as one of his skills as a Champion.
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: Formos gets Hex All as a boss. Unfortunately, that's only the beginning...
  • Degraded Boss: Not his Superboss incarnation, thank Lev, but his Champion card appears as part of Nophora's second Lightning Boss deck.
  • Elective Mute: As an Ebonclaw, he has sworn a vow of complete and utter silence.
  • Expy: An immensely powerful insect warrior who once fought on behalf of the game's Greater-Scope Paragon against an eldritch Big Bad who can invade dreams and poison people's minds, was sealed away inside an enormous black egg, and is encountered as the ultimate boss of a familiar locale that's been warped into an Eldritch Location through the actions of a moth-like sorceress. Are we talking about Formos Ebonclaw, or the Hollow Knight?
  • Extra Turn: As a Champion, he gets Dualstrike, a much-coveted skill that allows him to attack twice every couple of turns.
  • Fighter, Mage, Thief: The Thief to Tanit's Mage and Batara's Fighter. The fastest and frailest of the three, Formos dresses in a rogue's dark hood and mercilessly cuts down his enemies with his sharp claws.
  • Healing Factor: One of his skills as a Champion is Regenerate. As a boss, this gets cranked up to eleven — he doesn't just have Heal, he gets Invigorate.
  • Heart Container: As a boss, he can use Invigorate, which is normally the Secret Art of the Mythic Titan Atlas. Ironically, he's much nastier about it than Atlas ever was — Formos has Invigorate All 16, which effectively doubles the health of all the Fragile Speedster cards in his deck. Have fun!
  • Increasingly Lethal Enemy: On top of all his other annoying tricks, Formos effectively puts the player on a timer by Scorching their entire deck as a hero skill. His "Crimsonfang" and "Wyribbit Ashtongue" have some decent Scorch of their own, so they can keep up the pressure.
  • Infinity -1 Sword: The first Champion introduced in Distorted Beetleton. He also uses two of his own Champions — "Volvel, Golden Pride" and "Apex Land Shark".
  • In the Hood: Wears a black hooded cloak, as befits a fast-moving insect bodyguard.
  • Invisibility: Two-thirds of his deck has this skill. If you thought you'd get past him with hexbolt, think again.
  • Non-Indicative Name: As a boss, he's called "Ebonclaw, Silencer". He can't grant any of his cards Silence the way Tanit can, and the only card in his deck that has it is Fear of the Vanquished.
  • One-Man Army: Formos is so effective as a bodyguard that none of the assassins who have ever made an attempt on Lev's life, no matter how well-hidden, can even make it into the same room as her. He will show you exactly why that is if you battle him.
  • Protectorate: Agatha tasked him to protect the Forgotten Hero as if she were her own daughter.
  • SNK Boss: Even compared to other superbosses, Formos Ebonclaw takes the cake for one of the hardest, if not the hardest bosses in the game. His cards are nearly every tribe besides Mecha and Goblin, so you'll rarely ever fight him wholly at a disadvantage. His Invigorate gives what would be an easily beaten deck full of Fragile Speedsters an extra 16 HP, every single turn. He seemingly has a counter for almost every strategy you could think of. Even seasoned Spellstone pros conclude that going up against Formos and winning is a matter of getting lucky with the right BGE combination.
  • Speed Blitz: Every single one of Formos's cards is 1-delay (fast) or 0-delay (activates instantly). In-Universe, this is his fighting style, able to strike so quickly that you cannot even see him moving. Presumably his incredible speed is why he gets Dualstrike.
  • Superboss: A secret, extremely powerful boss fought in Distorted Beetleton.
  • Underground Monkey: Formos stands out among many of the game's superbosses by only using two "boss variants" of regular cards, namely "Fear of the Vanquished" (based off the Rhynio Battlecharger) and "Shore Scourer" (based off the Aqua Mantis). All the rest are cards one could, theoretically, have in their own deck... but don't worry, Formos more than makes up for it.
  • Undying Loyalty: His loyalty to the Forgotten Hero stems from the fact that she is the first person in his memory to treat him like a person, even though he will never answer her.

The Crimsonwings' Leader

The Forgotten Hero (ALL SPOILERS UNMARKED)

Lev / Vel

"My name is Vel. And the reason why people are so beautiful is because of their differences."
Although this adventurer dealt the final blow to Bluefire, there was a hero that weakened him before they fought... I speak of the hero who plucked Bluefire's heart from his form. The one whose name and very existence was cursed to be forgotten.

The Crimsonwings' object of fanatical worship, an ancient heroine who took on the legendary Bluefire and won. In the past, she rallied the tribes of Arcantica against an alliance between goblins and orcs, and tried to create an alliance between the winged tribes after she was done. Unfortunately, Bluefire retaliated by erasing her from existence, sealing her away in the Abyss.

  • All-Loving Hero: Lev has a utopian vision for the world, and hopes to unify all people to create a world without war. On a less macro level, she is very kind to her bodyguard Formos, whom the narrator notes is accustomed to being treated like a tool.
  • Apocalyptic Log: It's heavily implied that the backwards text seen throughout the Crimsonwing bosses' Flavor Text are her own writings and musings, and outright stated that the Cave Writings in the last mission of the Forgotten Island are.
  • Badass and Child Duo: She was the Child to Formos's Badass when she was younger.
  • Balance Buff: When she was first released, Lev's skillset was Invisibility, Daze, and Heartseeker. A buff to all Mythic-rarity cards in April 2022 replaced Daze with Poison instead.
  • Bling-Bling-BANG!: Her spear's tip is unmistakably gold-plated, and the bottom end has more gold and a purple jewel embedded into it. Her binoculars, bracers, and belt buckle are golden, too!
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Even someone as powerful as Lev isn't completely immune to the Void's influence. She is just as controlled as Oda and Elyse by the time the player encounters her, sealed away in the Abyss.
  • The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: When you finally fight her in the Abyss, she actually cheats in your favor by having only thirteen cards, rather than fifteen.
  • Damage-Increasing Debuff: The "Hero's Shadow" can Hex one of your cards each turn.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: She's an ordinary human woman, but she was somehow able to defeat Bluefire while at full power, and managed to permanently weaken him by cutting out his heart.
  • Dramatic Irony: After she leaves the Abyss with the player and Aria, she wrongly assumes that her followers were brainwashed by the Void, and that she "doubt[s] they'd even remember who [she is]". Ironically, it was their overcoming the Void and their memory of her that caused them to act out.
  • Gender-Blender Name: "Lev" is normally a man's name, but this Lev is unmistakably a woman.
  • Greater-Scope Paragon: Her acts of heroism and her attack on Bluefire set the stage for the player to stop the evil dragon for good. Unfortunately, her followers are still around and causing problems...
  • Infinity +1 Sword: You can only obtain a copy of Lev by taking any of the other Champions past the maximum level, which will give you Champion Stones for her.
  • Invisibility: One of her skills as a Champion. Notably, she has the most Invisibility of any obtainable card in the game, with Invisibility 5. When you finally fight the "Hero's Shadow" in the Abyss, she can imbue a random card in her deck with Invisibility 3.
  • I Will Fight No More Forever: After she leaves the Abyss, she decides to retire from heroism for good, and is content to wander across Arcantica. She also formally disbands the Crimsonwings.
  • Led by the Outsider: A mere human, she nevertheless united the other tribes of Arcantica against a past alliance between the goblins and orcs. After that was done, she attempted to lead an alliance between all the winged tribes of Arcantica, creating the Crimsonwings in the process.
  • Legend Fades to Myth: They don't call her the Forgotten Hero for nothing. In fact, only the Crimsonwings seem to have ever heard of her. Justified, as Bluefire somehow erased the memory of her from the world.
  • Mind-Control Eyes: By the time you actually meet her in the Abyss, she, too, has succumbed to the Void, and the narration notes her eyes are glazed over.
  • Mystical White Hair: She has long white hair, and is a mighty heroine who nearly slew Bluefire himself.
  • Olympus Mons: One of only eight Mythic cards. She's also THE only Mythic Champion, and by far the hardest of the Mythics to obtain without spending money.
  • Precursor Hero: Lev was a powerful heroine from a long-forgotten time, and she was responsible for tearing the Heart of Blue Fire out of Bluefire's chest.
  • Protectorate: The Rhynio who found her washed ashore are all her sworn defenders, but especially Formos.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Is dressed all in purple, and is a strong contender for one of the most powerful characters in the setting.
  • Raised by Wolves: She was raised by insects, specifically the Rhynio tribe from the now-Forgotten Island. Agatha, one of the island's seers, is one of the last Rhynio alive to have her sanity intact.
  • Ret-Gone: Bluefire "tossed the world's memories of the hero into the abyss" after losing his heart, causing Lev and her many adventures to become completely forgotten.
  • Sdrawkcab Name: In the Abyss, she introduces herself as "Vel", which is "Lev" backwards.
  • Sdrawkcab Speech: She uses this as a "code" of sorts, believing that her mind is not safe from the Void's influence.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Yakov initially believed that Lev was sealed away in the inner sanctum of the Celestial Vault, but opening a portal there only caused a throng of maddened elementals to pour out. Turns out the Abyss was even more obscure than that.
  • Secret Art: Heartseeker, Lev's unique skill, causes any card hit by it to take extra damage from direct attacks for the rest of its life on the battlefield. This effect stacks.
  • Self-Sacrifice Scheme: Her dialogue in the Abyss indicates that she knew she would end up in the Abyss when she opposed Bluefire, yet she did so willingly, as it was "the only way to truly defeat the Void".
  • Sheep in Sheep's Clothing: She has a fanatical cult dedicated to her revival, with many of its members willing to commit morally dubious and outright evil acts for the sake of freeing her from the Abyss. Yet Lev herself is every bit as heroic as the Crimsonwings believe her to be.
  • Status Buff: The "Hero's Shadow" can grant invisibility to one random card, as well as imbuing her entire deck with Daze.
  • Walking Spoiler: As one of the strongest characters in Arcantica and a character whose very existence is never mentioned until a good while after Bluefire's defeat, Lev's very existence is a spoiler.
