The main character of the movie. He's a bit of a lazy jerk, but he has a good heart. And the fastest feet in the world.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: While he's still a good guy at heart, he is a bit more lazy and ill-tempered in the film compared to the games.
  • Anti-Hero: Despite being The Hero, he's often too lazy to help people, and prefers to have someone else do the job. But, the second he realizes there's no other way, he will jump right in and help.
  • Badass in Distress: He got saved by Knuckles and Tails while fighting Metal Robotnik, and then saved Knuckles in return.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Sonic generally likes to joke around and is somewhat lazy, but when there's evil in the way, he does not hesitate to fight
  • Big "SHUT UP!": To Tails, who he was unaware was yelling for help, while he was trying to relax.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Spends most of his time getting Tails to do the job because he's too lazy to do it himself.
  • Cool House: A rusted-out relic of a 747 jetliner.
  • Cool Shades: Wore a pair in the beginning of the movie.
  • Distressed Dude: He got saved TWICE in the movie.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Early in the movie, he seems too lazy to join Tails in helping the old man, even annoyed that he keeps messing up his relaxation, but the second he feels Tails is really in danger he springs right into action and saves both of them. This establishes him both as a lovable asshole and a true hero.
  • Flash Step: Does these all the time, usually as a dodging maneuver
  • Friendly Rival: With Knuckles.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Best displayed in the opening scene. He initially refuses to help Tails save the old man and prefers to kick back and relax, but immediately jumps in to save them once it becomes clear they're in genuine danger.
  • Mirror Character: The film introduces Metal Sonic, Sonic's oldest Evil Counterpart and a robot created to match Sonic's abilities and personality.
  • Nice, Mean, and In-Between: The mean one with Tails and Knuckles, although he actually is not too bad a guy.
  • Properly Paranoid: He's initially reluctant to trust Robotnik's claim that his Robot Generator will melt down and destroy the planet, pointing out they have no reason to believe him when "99 out of 100 times, he's lying." While he is convinced to check it out eventually, Sonic was right to be suspicious; the Robot Generator was just a trap to bait Sonic in so Robotnik could copy his life data into Hyper Metal Sonic.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: His favorite clothes are pink.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Red to Tails and Knuckles' Blue.
  • Super-Speed: Par for the course, but the movie does a really good job showing just how fast a hypersonic object would really be going.
  • Super-Strength: At least in striking force. His battles with Metal were destroying the landscape around them, and he was able to finally smash apart Metal Robotnik, who had survived being hit by a nuke sized explosive.
  • The Unfettered: Surprisingly fits this to a tee, in comparison to his game counterpart who happens to be The Fettered.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Early in the movie, Tails calls him an idiot for not wanting to help saving the old guy. Beware the Nice Ones indeed.
  • What the Hell Is That Accent?: Sonic's voice in the English dub has a very bizarre, indeterminate accent. It sounds like a cross between a vague Southern accent and a British falsetto, with the latter being obvious in the more frenetic scenes. Alternatively, it can be described as a Texan trying to put on a surfer dude accent.

The Brains to Sonic's Brawns, Tails is a technical genius who happily lends a hand, even in times of peril.

Knuckles is a treasure-hunter who gets on well with Sonic and Tails. Though rather quick to anger, he's always ready to lend his fists when danger threatens.

    Hyper Metal Sonic

Voiced by: Masami Kikuchi (JP), Gary Dehan (EN)

Metal Sonic: "There is only one Sonic."

The oldest Evil Counterpart to Sonic. Hyper Metal Sonic — called Metal for short — was created with a desire to destroy Sonic, and shows no mercy to those who dare getting in his way. He is the true villain of the movie, even more competent than his creator who's usually the primary Big Bad.

  • Accidental Pervert: When he crashes through the bottom of Robotnik's ship during a fight with Sonic, he accidentally looks up Sara's dress. This causes her to call him a pervert and kick him in the head repeatedly.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection: While Metal was always meant to be a rival to his real counterpart, the movie makes it more apparent they are connected as he has to run on Sonic's DNA in order to counter the attacks.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's never stated if Metal speaking to Sonic was actually Metal speaking, or just them telepathically speaking.
  • And Your Reward Is Clothes: Because Hyper Metal Sonic shares a telepathic link with the real Sonic, he begins to adopt some of Sonic's tastes and personality traits. Before he leaves to destroy the ice mass holding the Land of the Sky together, he is kind enough to give Old Man Owl Sonic's raddest threads, which are clearly straight out of the 90s.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: He's built for malevolent purposes, but his DNA-based programming is based on Sonic's mind and after a while, takes on some of the original Sonic's personality traits and starts doing things that he would do.
  • Artificial Hedgehog: A robot based off Sonic, and a dangerous one at that.
  • Barrier Warrior: He projects a near-impenetrable forcefield whenever he's flying around, especially when he pile-drives into Planet Freedom from space.
  • Defeat Means Respect: He shows his respect to Sonic after his defeat, to the point where he rejects being saved from being destroyed in magma on the basis that "There is only one Sonic".
  • Dragon-in-Chief: If he remains Dr. Robotnik's weapon of mass destruction, Metal happens to be the real threat of the movie, destroying cities and attemting to kill Sonic while his boss is derping around.
  • Disney Villain Death: A variation. Hyper Metal Sonic is heavily damaged and sent falling into a volcano's magma chamber after being hit by a chunk of metal from the President's exploding ship, but is ultimately destroyed by the rising lava after declining to be rescued by Sonic.
  • Evil Knockoff: As is natural with being based off Sonic, down to even having the memories and personality of Sonic, taken from stolen samples of his DNA.
Sara: THIS STUPID THING LOOKS LIKE SONIC, BUT IT'S BAAAAD!
  • Eye Lights Out: Hyper Metal Sonic's eyes slowly fade out right as he is completely consumed by rising magma, confirming him to be truly dead. Before that, as he tries to crawl up to Sonic while considering taking his help, they're seen flickering repeatedly as he sparks and vents smoke.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When he lets himself be melted by lava, despite Sonic trying to save him. Also note that he died respecting Sonic, those being the only words he spoke in the whole movie.
  • Family-Unfriendly Death: After being dismembered over the course of his fights with Sonic and friends and even moreso after the President's spaceship explodes, Metal Sonic basically commits suicide by letting himself sink into lava. He's last seen short-circuiting and melting on-screen.
  • Flying Brick: He can fly, is extremely strong, fast and tough, and is just generally the most powerful character in the movie by a long shot. Notably, it takes the combined efforts of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Sara to beat him back, and it takes a last-minute Heel–Face Turn to defeat him for good.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: He started showing humility to Sonic and friends right before his death, rescuing the President and Old Man Owl from an exploding spaceship and facing his own impending demise with dignity on the basis of his Villain Respect for Sonic.
  • Invincible Villain: He's seemingly immune to anything Sonic can throw at him. Only having his emotions hacked by Tails' wristwatch computer and his own growing sense of humanity keep him from easily defeating Sonic and destroying the world.
  • Killer Robot: The latest and deadliest made by Eggman.
  • Knight of Cerebus: The tone of the film is pretty light-hearted at first. However, everything gets one hell of a lot more serious once when he makes himself known.
  • Mirror Character: For Sonic, his oldest Evil Counterpart and a robot created to match Sonic's abilities and personality.
  • A Molten Date with Death: Hyper Metal Sonic ultimately dies through being short-circuited and melted in a rising pool of magma. Sonic and Knuckles follow him down and try to save him before it gets to him, but Metal ultimately decides not to after briefly considering it.
  • Neck Lift: Metal does a one-handed one to Sonic after beating him down in their second battle, only being stopped from outright strangling him to death by Sara and Tails intervening.
  • No Mouth: In stark contrast to his hedgehog counterpart's constant commentary, Metal always fights in grim silence. That said, he does speak once at the end of the film; and snarkily imitates Sonic's movements.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Even going beyond the whole plan to destroy the entire Land Of The Sky, he's seen singlehandedly tearing through and destroying cities at one point.
  • Pet the Dog: After having seemingly killed Sonic in their first fight, he goes back to Planet Freedom and tracks down Old Man Owl, looming over him ominiously like he's going to kill him. Instead, he gives the owl Sonic's favourite clothes to wear before leaving.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: The exact same size as Sonic, but strong enough to knock him unconscious with a single hit and to break off an entire mountain top when clashing with Sonic during their later fight.
  • The Quiet One: Says nothing until the near end of the movie.
  • Redemption Equals Death: After saving the President and Old Man Owl, he gets hit by a piece of falling debris, malfunctions, and falls into the magma chamber of a volcano.
  • Robotic Psychopath: He's basically programmed to be one. He has an insane obsession with destroying Sonic, goes along with Robotnik's plan to destroy the Land Of The Sky without question, and could perhaps be considered a megalomaniac.
  • Shows Damage: Over the course of the movie, Metal is seen getting increasingly damaged by various things; starting with part of the shell on his head being broken away, and by the time of his death from melting in magma, ends up with his entire lower half torn off, his head completely broken open, and him visibly shorting out and smoking; his eyes flickering as he slowly drags himself over to Sonic.
  • Silent Snarker: As Metal's personality further merges with Sonic's, he gains the hedgehog's snark, mimicking his movements during their conversation before their final battle.
  • Villain Respect: In the end, he died being humble to Sonic.
  • The Voiceless: Doesn't say a word in the entire movie, except right before he dies.

    Sara
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Movie-Sara_727.png
Voiced by: Mika Kanai (JP), Sascha Biesi (EN)

A Tsundere girl who has a thing for Sonic. She is the President's daughter, and even manages to get along with Dr. Robotnik. She appears to be extremely hot-headed, but a genuinely good girl who is on the right side.

  • Accidental Pervert: Almost every male character ends up being this around her. Both Tails and Knuckles end up accidentally groping her, Metal Sonic gets a view up her skirt after Sonic kicked him through the floor beneath Sara, and due to a telepathic link between Sonic and Hyper Metal Sonic, Sonic ended up seeing everything Metal did; leading to an amusing reaction.
  • Ambiguously Human: She's mostly human, but has cat ears and a tail.
  • Berserk Button: Acting perverted towards her — accidentally or otherwise — really sets Sara off, as both Robotnik and Metal Sonic found out the hard way.
    • Also, attacking Sonic or putting him in danger, to the point where she was willing to try directly fighting Metal Sonic to stop him from choking Sonic in a Neck Lift.
  • Bound and Gagged: Sara is tied up with ropes and gagged with tape by Robotnik during one scene.
  • Canon Foreigner: She was created for this OVA, and does not appear in any of the games.
  • Cat Girl: While mostly human, she has cat ears and a tail.
  • Continuity Cameo: She makes two cameo appearances in the Archie comics. The first being in a universe based on the OVA in Issue #101, the second being a background appearance in Issue #257.
  • Damsel in Distress: Played with. With how casual she is with Robotnik and his robot goons after being held hostage at the President's office, she implies that she could stop being one at any time. At least up until the true extent of Robotnik's Adam and Eve Plot is revealed, it seems that she most likely just likes the attention of being saved by the heroes.
  • Defiant Captive: Although not at first, thanks to him remaining on her good side, Sara is very clearly opposed to Robotnik dragging her into his schemes, at one point even smashing him over the head with a piece of scrap metal when he vows to destroy Sonic after the Metal Robotnik fight. Sara also beats up Robotnik when he reveals to her his Adam and Eve Plot that involves him marrying her.
Robotnik: (emerges from the wrecked cockpit) Sonic had better enjoy his victory now, because when he gets to Robotropolis, he'll have to fight something far more evil than Metal Robotni- (WHACK) OW!
  • Genki Girl: She's very energetic and friendly (albeit not without her tsundere side), even with Robotnik.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: As seen under Ocular Gushers, Sara loudly and comically bursts into tears when Knuckles accuses her of teaming up with Robotnik, through her being inside Metal Robotnik with him. It says a lot when even Robotnik himself shuffles away awkwardly at it.
  • Interspecies Romance: She's mostly human, but has cat ears and a tail, and she has a big crush on Sonic. She also flirts with Knuckles at one point, though this is mostly to get him to help save the world.
  • Mood-Swinger: Especially seen in one scene where she threw a temper tantrum at Robotnik, but then immediately became happy when he gave her a dress. But when Robotnik reveals his plan to marry her and she gets a vision of the two of them having fifteen babies, her response to this is what you'd expect.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's a pretty, young woman with a cute catgirl tail and ears, a likeably boisterous, energetic, and friendly personality, and she wears outfits that show off her attractive physique.
  • Nice Girl: She can be obnoxious at times, but she's pretty friendly otherwise. She even manages to get along with Dr. Robotnik, while still being kidnapped by him. They play video games.
Sara: (flailing) NONONONO, IT'S NOT FAIR, YOU ALWAYS BEAT ME EVERY TIME! (recomposes herself) Alright, one more.
Robotnik: Just give up, we've played a hundred times!
Sara: (coyly) I'll stop being your hostage~!
    Robotnik: Alright, start again.
  • Ocular Gushers: Sara breaks out in comically-exaggerated spraying tears when she's revealed to be with Robotnik inside the destroyed Metal Robotnik, and Knuckles blindly accuses her of working with him.
Knuckles: I get it... so you two were both Metal Robotnik!
(Sara's eyes well up, and she bursts into tears as Robotnik awkwardly looks away and shrinks back)
Tails: (quietly amused as Knuckles looks guilty) Look at that, Knuckles, now you made her cry!
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Although she goes into it once prior when Robotnik reveals his Adam and Eve Plot to her, Sara has a particularly amusing example when Hyper Metal Sonic smashes head-first through the bottom of Robotnik's hovership, accidentally looking up her dress. Which, for reference, happens when Sonic is seeing everything Metal is through their telepathic link.
Robotnik: Oh no! How is it that you're still alive, Sonic?! (a blushing Sonic ignores him, and then starts writhing in evident pain and embarassment) Huh? What's wrong with you, what are you doing? (looks behind him)
Sara: (holding her dress down as she repeatedly kicks Metal in the head) GET BACK! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! (Metal continues staring up her skirt, his eyes glowing noticeably brighter) DON'T LOOK THERE, YOU PERVERT!
  • Playful Cat Smile: Sara gives one to Robotnik when she convinces him to keep playing video games with her.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Although she is by no means unattractive in her first outfit, Sara pulls off the wedding dress Robotnik gave her very well.
  • Spanner in the Works: Sara ends up being this to Hyper Metal Sonic. Her trying to fight him off when he has Sonic on the ropes ends up distracting the murderous copy long enough for Tails to use the modified Robotnik Watch on him, saving Sonic and kick-starting Metal's eventual Heel–Face Turn.
  • Tsundere: As mentioned before, a Type B example. She's very nice around people she likes — especially Sonic — and is even fine around Robotnik whenever he's able to stay on her good side. It doesn't take him much effort to push her buttons, though.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Happens at least twice; first when she hears about Robotnik's Adam and Eve Plot that involves him marrying and having many children with her, and again when she sees Metal Sonic trying to choke a badly-beaten Sonic to death with one arm. Both times, she's seen yelling at them and beating them up — or at least trying to, in Metal's case — from multiple angles.
Sara: (grinds her teeth furiously, before laying into Robotnik with a barrage of punches and slaps) ARE YOU CRAZY?! I WOULDN'T MARRY YOU IF YOU WERE THE LAST MAN ON EARTH! note
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Although she isn’t Sonic’s girlfriend, she acts like this to him. When Hyper Metal Sonic has Sonic caught in a Neck Lift, she attacks the evil duplicate herself to try to get him to stop. While Metal, of course, barely reacts, Sara distracting him does give Tails time to use the modified watch on the evil duplicate.
Sara: What are you doing to my Sonic?! (jumps onto Metal Sonic and repeatedly starts pulling at and biting him) This stupid thing looks like Sonic, BUT IT'S BAD!

Sonic's Arch-Nemesis, and would be the perfect main villain, if he wasn't overshadowed by Metal Sonic. However, he is without a doubt a genius due to being his creator. Despite being the antagonist, Robotnik is also one of the nicest characters in the series, and has a respectful rivalry with Sonic.

  • Affably Evil: He's as villainous as ever, but has many moments where he's genuinely cordial and friendly, even to Sonic.
  • Arch-Nemesis: To Sonic, as always.
  • Badass Bookworm: Hell yeah! You gotta give him credit for creating Metal Sonic, and for his Evil Plan actually being well thought-out at that.
  • Big Bad: He created the two main villains in the series, Metal Sonic and Metal Robotnik, and is the one who came up with the plan.
  • Bald of Evil: He's as bald as usually.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: His first part of the plan is to make Sonic go to his homeland so he can lure Sonic there to scan him to active Metal Sonic. But he tries to kill Sonic when he was under the Metal Robotnik disguse. While it can be argued that he wants get Sonic to the right way where the hero needs to go, Robotnik tries his best to kill the heroes, hence making it look like he's almost killing his plan.
  • Cool Shades: They are. As well as they are round
  • Determinator: He's still trying to rule the world, this time by destroying all life on it, except his and Sara, as a part of his Adam and Eve Plot.
  • Dirty Old Man: He plans to marry and reproduce with Sara (who's way younger than him), and makes her wear a short wedding dress for the occasion.
  • Evil Genius: He's surprisingly better at scheming than any of his other counterparts.
  • Friendly Enemy: He remains friendly to Sonic while still ordering robots to destroy Sonic.
  • Harmless Villain: Sonic doesn't take him for a threat. The only reason he poses any threat is because he built Hyper Metal Sonic, and once the robot is destroyed, Robotnik goes back to being treated as a joke.
  • Mad Scientist: He created Metal Sonic, Metal Robotnik, and basically every Artificial Intelligence in the movie.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: While he's treated as a joke, he still created the two robots who came close to destroying Sonic and Planet Freedom.
  • Obviously Evil: Lampshaded shortly after his first appearance in the movie.
Tails: "No fair! You kidnapped the President and Sara so you could hold them for ransom and take over South Island, didn't you?!"
Robotnik: "Do you really think I'm capable of something that underhanded? Me?!"
    Everyone: "YES!"

A giant robot who seemingly took over Robotropolis and kicked Robotnik out. Acts as the main antagonist of the first part. He is later revealed to be a mech piloted by the mad scientist himself.

    The President
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mr__president_3894.jpg
Voiced by Yuzuru Fujimoto (Japanese), Edwin Neal (English)

The President is president of... some sort of political entity within the Land of the Sky. Not exactly the bravest chief executive ever, the President tricks Sonic and Tails into meeting Dr. Robotnik at the presidential residence after the scientist holds his daughter hostage.

  • Ambiguously Human: He looks mostly human, but has long pointy ears.
  • Canon Foreigner: He was created for this OVA, and does not appear in any of the games.
  • Chest of Medals: On his weird sash-thing he has a bunch of medals.
  • Cowardly Lion: When he believes Sara is in danger, he's more than willing to try and go after her himself... if he knows where she is.
  • Hostage Situation: Dr. Robotnik holds the president and his daughter hostage at the presidential manor until Sonic shows up. Later, the president arguably holds himself and the entire planet hostage when he flies to the polar regions in an attempt to save Sara, crashes his ship into the ice, and can't eject from the cockpit when the whole ship is rapidly filling up with hot steam. It's mentioned that if his ship explodes, it could shatter the ice holding the Land of the Sky together. Ultimately, Metal Sonic saves him and Old Man Owl.
  • Our Presidents Are Different: To be more precise, this president is a bumbling buffoon and also a bit of a target.
  • Papa Wolf: He tries so hard to be this, but only ends up making the situation more dangerous for our heroes.
  • Pointy Ears: The President has pointed ears and his butler has them too.

    Old Man Owl
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/old_man_owl_9534.jpg
Voiced by Chafurin (Japanese), Charlie Campbell (English)

The President's ostentatiously wise messenger, who due to his slow-wittedness, skittishness, and bad eye-sight more often than not creates hazardous situations for himself and all those around him. Despite his obvious senility and the constant danger he creates for himself, he does have a strangely upbeat attitude.

  • Blind Mistake: Almost flies straight into the side of a cliff because he didn't see it coming. He also speaks to a blue flower for a minute before realizing it wasn't Sonic.
  • Canon Foreigner: He was created for this OVA, and does not appear in any of the games.
  • Cool Plane: Has a cool jet plane that's just big enough for him. Unfortunately, it catches on fire and is quickly destroyed afterwards.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: For whatever reason, Sonic just barely tolerates him. Everybody else seems to be alright with him.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: Or so he claims.
  • The Pollyanna: In spite of whatever happens around him, he seems to be obliviously content.
  • Unwise Owl: Old Man Owl is The Ditz, perpetually hapless and confused.
