    Descendants/Skykids

The Descendants/Skykids

The main characters of the game, mysterious but friendly beings who have begun to appear in the ruined kingdom of Sky, both to repair its broken state, and to heal and put the spirits of its departed inhabitants to rest with compassion.

  • Animal Motifs: Moths. They fly, their default cape resembles moth wings, they are inextricably drawn to light and especially to the light of Eden despite the lethality of the latter.
  • Badass Adorable: Though largely pacifistic, they brave incredible danger with little complaint.
  • Intelligible Unintelligible: The only vocal sound Skykids make are honks, beeps, or chirps. They are sometimes seen, by body language, to be talking with other characters, but you cannot read their dialogue.
  • Light Is Good: They are beings made of light, sustained by the candle flame inside their chests, which they can bring out to share with others. Their hair is always white, and with the exception of some of the gloomier outfits, Skykids tend towards bright colors. They are also the main remaining force of good in the world.

  • No Biological Sex: All Skykids are addressed as they/them, and you’re unable to directly choose your gender.

  • Our Angels Are Different: From what can be gleaned from the lore, Skykids serve like angels to the Phoenix god: beings sent by the light to save the souls still in Sky and heal the land. In temperament, they are as kind, brave, and devoted as a typical angel, but also excitable, goofy, fun-loving, and definitely would not need to tell anyone to “Fear Not”.
  • Resurrective Immortality: As long as another Skykid is around to pass their light onto them, they can be brought back from any death, even those suffered in Eden.

    The Elders

In general

Eden Elder

  • Collateral Damage: All of Sky’s ancestor spirits died as a result of their plans, and the Sky world was majorly affected.

  • Fan Nickname: Too many to count. Popular ones include King, Resh, and Storm.

  • Loose Canon: Isn’t directly shown in-game, but is heavily implied to have a major impact on the game’s lore.

  • One-Man Industrial Revolution: Subverted. Instead of bringing a new era of power, accidentally brings the apocalypse.

  • The Plan: To build a giant diamond at the center of Eden to power the whole world.

    The Darkness

In General

  • The Corruption: Areas tainted by the Dark start to get overgrown with fungus and thorned plants, and they are even able to corrupt other creatures into minions.
    • And in addition, Season of Aurora hints that Dark Dragons are corrupted giant Mantas, driven mad from the civil war.
  • Create Your Own Villain: Details of why and how are left open to interpretation, but season of Aurora all but confirms they are not a natural force, but one created by the actions of the Ancestors. Whether it was experimentation (as seen in the Abyss), a side effect of light creatures being forced to fight in the civil war for survival (as seen in Season of Aurora), caused by Eden detonating (as implied by Season of Shattering), or a combination of all those, is yet unknown.
  • Dark Is Evil: They seem to exist only to hurt and cause suffering, and all are pitch black.
  • Hopeless War: The war against the forces of Darkness was this, with the kingdom being ruined utterly.
  • Order Versus Chaos: They represent Chaos, having no clear society or culture and instead a hierarchy based upon raw strength. They act more like a collective of very intelligent predatory animals than any formal movement or faction.

Darkness Crabs

Formerly beings of light, they were susceptible to corruption in a way the other species were not, and are now near-universally hostile.
  • Abstract Eater: Eat light, which means if you lose a Winged Light near them, they will devour it.
  • Mook: The most basic enemy encountered in Sky.
  • Tragic Monster: They were corrupted by the Darkness. Doing Shard Events to free the souls trapped inside will sometimes free a crab soul instead of the usual manta or jellyfish, showing that it's not in their nature to be hostile.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: They get startled by a Descendant doing a deep call near them, causing them to be flipped over onto their back. Once flipped, they are harmless and can even be picked up and carried around.

The Dark Dragons

The apparent “leaders” of the dark. Intelligent and cruel, they will attack any Descendants they see with lethal intent.
  • Achilles' Heel: So far, the only thing that has been shown fending off one of these otherwise fairly invincible creatures is the Nine-Colored Deer from the 20th season of the game.
  • Cyclops: They only have one eye which changes from blue to red when is ready to attack.
  • Draconic Abomination: Eerie serpent-like creatures seemingly made of darkness, with a single eye and dangling appendages similar to a shrimp's legs.
  • Giant Flier: Extremely large creatures that can still fly without problems, and can even attack at high speeds.
  • Invincible Boogeymen: While you cannot normally defeat anything in Sky, you can usually stun creatures or easily evade them, and often they do not go out of their way to attack you unless you stray close. Dark Dragons actively hunt you, are hard to evade once they spot you, and cannot be stunned.
  • Mechanical Abomination: Maybe, it is not clear if they are biological or mechanical creatures. Their only eye projects a light that has a clear cylindrical range, and changes color according to whether a target is detected. This suggests that maybe they are just war machines programmed to search for lights. But on the other hand, their behavior is shared with the Crabs, corrupted animals that also attack light beings.
  • One-Hit Kill: Getting hit by them instantly causes the loss of a winged light.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Their blue eye turns red when they spot a Descendant, a warning they are about to swoop in for an attack.
  • Reused Character Design: While they look very different visually, in behavior, animation, and narrative function they are a dead ringer for the Warmachines from previous thatgamecompany game Journey (2012).

Many Eyed Thing

A gigantic darkness creature that lurks in Treasure Reef as an apex predator.—-

Dark Worms

Only encountered in the Trial of Fire, Dark Worms patrol the Trial zone in set paths, instantly defeating anything they touch.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Once you gain the blessing of fire, you are actually able to defeat them by simply touching them. Unable to comprehend this, they proceed to swarm towards you and are dissolved in the process.
  • Interface Screw: Being near one causes the screen to shake and distort, and the sound they make is deafening.
  • Living Shadow: Moving masses of dark with eyes.
  • One-Hit Kill: Instantly send you back to a checkpoint if they touch you.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Unlike the Dark Dragons, they always have these to show they are always hostile.
  • Savage Setpiece: They are more environmental hazards than traditional enemies.

Shard Crabs

Brought to the land of Sky by the eruptions occurring in the Eye of Eden, Shard Crabs are a stronger variant of Crab that viciously protect the shards that created them.
  • Abstract Eater: Eat light just like normal crabs, but their inability to be stunned means it's far more likely they will eat your winged light before you can retrieve it.
  • Bullfight Boss: Essentially the only way to deal with them is to trick them into charging into you and away from the shards so you (or your friends) can burn a few plants while they regroup.
  • Invincible Minor Minion: Unlike normal Crabs, these cannot be stunned and doing a Deep Call only makes them angry.

The Krill Cat

Only appearing during the Days of Mischief, the Krill Cat is a corrupted black cat with a nasty attitude.
  • The Corruption: Played for Laughs. The cat can curse you, turning you into a partial darkness creature. However, in gameplay and story terms, corrupted skykids are exactly the same except for a love of scary pranks and the ability to spread said curse, fitting the lighthearted nature of the Days of Mischief.
  • Killer Rabbit: Although it’s Played for Laughs in the context of the season, the Cat seems to be the first and only thing so far that can corrupt skykids, and the curse can be spread.

     The Creatures of the Light

In General

  • The Dog Bites Back: After being captured and exploited, the creatures of light eventually took part in the civil war and fought against the people who abused them. This unfortunately had some side effects…
  • Flying Seafood Special: Most of the creatures of the light fly, and resemble aquatic creatures like manta rays, fish, jellyfish, etc.
  • Order Versus Chaos: Represent Order, being allied and aligned with the land of Sky before whatever calamity befell it. In the present, they aid the Descendants/Skykids in bringing healing to the land.
  • Light Is Good: They will help and heal you whenever you encounter them, and are completely harmless
     Notable Spirits
Some spirits are given more characterization and story arcs than the standard lost souls.

The Skater

A young skater from the Village of Dreams, who longs to perform in the Valley of Triumph.
  • Animal Motifs: Birds, which appear to overall be a traditional thing in the village. Their mask and cape are modeled after birds.
  • Generation Xerox: The skater and their parent look extremely similar.

The Little Prince

A mysterious but friendly prince from a land outside of Sky. He becomes fast friends with the protagonist.

The Director

The leader of an acting troupe, they and their actors have remained behind in the land of Sky as spirits, still trying to pull off the perfect performance. The guide of Season of Performance.
  • Ghostly Goals: Like all seasonal guide spirits, they exist in the present day as a physical ghost. Rather than helping them remember anything or come to terms with their memories, you are helping them and their troupe in the present to put on a perfect performance so that they all can move on.

Abyss Guide

A member of a treasure hunter group who ropes your character into their treasure hunt. Seems to be the navigator of the crew.
  • Dug Too Deep: Their utter conviction that the reef has more and more treasure ends up causing the unwitting release of the Many Eyed Thing.
  • Ghostly Goals: Serving their captain, even after death.

Cackling Cannoneer

A member of the treasure hunter crew in the reef, who is both rather abrasive and very confident in their ability.
  • Ghostly Goals: Seeks to finish their business in the treasure reef, and show off while doing it.
  • Jerkass: Sticks out like a sore thumb among the spirits for their attitude.
  • The Rival: They immediately take a dislike to you, and tries to outdo you at every turn just because they can, usually getting a patronizing laugh in here and there.
  • Smug Snake: Their purpose is to be obnoxious, overestimate themself, and then require rescue.
