The silent protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei NINE. Their gender can be chosen by the player.


  • Disappeared Dad: Their father is never seen in-game. It's implied that he's dead, but an exact cause is never mentioned.
  • Empowered Badass Normal: Can learn magic by equipping certain pieces of armor. Other than that, they're a completely normal human.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Although "Kei Azuma" is their canonical name, the player is given a choice of naming them.
  • Virtual Paper Doll: In a first for the series, their appearance is completely customizable

One of two Chaos-aligned main characters. If the protagonist is male, he's their childhood friend who becomes a Debugger as well. If the protagonist is female, he's an acquaintance of Emi who eventually becomes the game's Chaos Hero.


  • Blade Below the Shoulder: [spoiler:Wields a gauntlet with a side-mounted blade in his demon form. If his attack animations are any indication, it's detachable.]]
  • Blow You Away: Uses Force spells in battle
  • Dual Boss: If the protagonist is male, he can be fought in Chapter 8, accompanied by a Kingu.
  • Playing with Fire: Uses Fire spells when fought as a boss

  • Dual Boss: If the protagonist is female, she can be fought in Chapter 8, accompanied by a Hecate.
  • Weapon Specialization: Specializes in using whips in battle.

  • The Medic: Uses healing and support skills as a Reinforcement.
  • Signature Mon: Anubis. It's in his party as a Reinforcement and when he's fought as a boss, and is also present during in-engine cutscenes.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: Sides with the Central Administration Bureau and Maria near the end of the game, even after everything they've done.

  • Body Backup Drive: He has multiple android bodies. This allows him to lead another attack on the church the protagonists are hiding in, despite being killed and decapitated by Naitou moments earlier.
  • Da Chief: The Debuggers answer to him
  • Journey to the Center of the Mind: One RTS mission involves hacking into his mind. Since he's an android, it's a lot less gruesome than it sounds.
  • Robotic Reveal: The first Bureau member to be outed as an android.

    Idea Angels 

Idea Angels

Soldiers serving the Central Administration Bureau. After True Tokyo is established, they replace the Debuggers.


  • Instakill Mook: They can use Snipe Shot, a Gun combo that has a chance of instantly killing the target. In addition, they start using Hama and Mudo after the first encounter.
  • Wolfpack Boss: Groups of them are fought as bosses at multiple points in the story.

  • Boss in Mook Clothing: Despite being random encounters, the game considers them to be bosses. The standard boss theme even plays during the fight!
  • Dual Boss: They're always encountered together.
  • Eyes Out of Sight: Eve's face is obscured by her hair.
  • Eyeless Face: If you look closely, Adam appears to lack actual eyes.
  • PiƱata Enemy: They drop valuable healing items when killed. If you have the resources for it, you can potentially use them to stock up before the Final Boss.
