The Court of Friendship
Princess Twilight Sparkle
Princess of Friendship & Magic and leader of the Court.
Applejack
Bearer of Honesty
Pinkie Pie
Bearer of Laughter.
Rainbow Dash
Bearer of Loyalty and a Royal Equestria Navy lieutenant.
Rarity
Bearer of Generosity
Fluttershy
Bearer of Kindness
Raspberry Beryl
Twilight's Court Mage, Archmagus of Equestria for Dark Magic and princess-in-pretense and head of House Sombra
- Dark Is Not Evil: Despite having a horrific "Sombraic" form, a near-exclusive user of black magic and a mare with a shady past, Razz is overall good and kind-hearted.
Spike
Twilight's dragon adopted little brother and her secretary
- Precocious Crush: He's crushing on Rarity, though she thinks of him as nothing more than her friend's kid brother.
Prince Divine Rightnote
Head of the Friendship Guard, minor prince of Equestria and Twilight's love interest
- Affectionate Nickname: "Div" courtesy of Twilight. With the added bonus of allowing for disambiguation between him and his counterpart.
- Childhood Friend Romance: He's had it bad for Twilight since colthood. It's hinted she's much the same way, though not as expressive of it as he is.
- Don't Call Me "Sir": An odd case, in that he prefers to be addressed by his military rank over his royal title.
- Knight in Shining Armor: He's definitely not like his human counterpart. Div is kind, gentle, strong, capable and would do anything for his troops and the civilians he protects.
- Rank Up: Introduced as a lieutenant, gains the rank of captain as he takes command of Twilight's guard in between 7DSJ part 5 and GAoA part 1.
Canterlot
Princess Celestia
Princess of the Day, ruler of Equestria, mother of Sunset Shimmer and Twilight's mentor
- Parental Obliviousness: Celestia had a hooves-off policy when raising Sunset, and this turned out to backfire spectacularly.
- Struggling Single Mother: Despite being a goddess and a de facto queen, Celestia focused more on the former two jobs, much to her adopted daughter's detriment.
Princess Luna
Princess of the Night, crown princess of Equestria, aunt to Sunset and Cadance
Prince Blueblood
Celestia's ne'er-do-well nephew
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Despite his public persona, Blueblood is actually one of Equestria's most effective spies and willing to do whatever it takes, even if it means he's publicly hated.
Octavia Melody
Blueblood's childhood friend and sister figure
- Like Brother and Sister: Given that she was the childhood friend of Blueblood's younger sister, she and he have a sibling-like relationship, despite ponies thinking they're an Official Couple, if not Friends with Benefits.
Marimba Rondo
Head of the Princess' Hooves, the bodyguards of the princesses
- Fantastic Rank System: She is the Castellan of the Hooves, which makes her equivalent to a general. In reality, the word castellan simply refers to the head of a castle.
Night Light & Twilight Velvet
Parents of Shining Armor, Twilight Sparkle and Spike. Night is the head of the Royal Astronomers Guild, while Velvet is in charge of the Ministry of Family Care
Ponyville
Lyra Heartstrings & Sandalwood
Equestria's most-famous Conspiracy Theorist duo
- Expy: For most readers of the BV, a more extreme version of Sandalwood tends to come to mind.
- Cloud Cuckoolander: Between the two of them, this is Lyra's role ... and she fits it to a tee.
- Only Sane Woman: Between the two of them, this is Sandy's role. However, that's not saying much.
Bon-Bon
Lyra's best friend and former roommate
Mr. & Mrs. Cake
Owners of Sugar Cube Corner and Pinkie's landlords
Elsewhere in Equestria
Princess Cadance
Princess of Love and the ruler of the Crystal Empire.
Prince Shining Armor
Captain of the EUP Guard and Cadance's husband. Older brother of Twilight and Spike.
- Fantastic Rank System: As head of the EUP, his official title is Captain of the Guard, making him equivalent to a general. In reality, captain of the guard is just a title and does not actually denote rank.
- Knight in Shining Armor: It's in his name.
"The Rose with the Broken Neck"
Once Crisalide della Lucca, she was forcibly transported by her husband to serve as Sombra's slave. By the time of the Berylverse stories, her fate is unknown. [[spoiler:Until it's revealed Queen Chrysalis used to be her,
- Canon Character All Along: She's the human counterpart, and current host, of Queen Chrysalis, as well as the Chrysalis that impersonated Cadance at her wedding.
- Historical Domain Character: Apparently there was a real-life Crisalide della Lucca, who was said to have been murdered by her husband Baldassare di Cavalcanti, used as a sacrifice for dark magic or because she could not bear children. Her fictional counterpart is instead sacrificed to "the Black Unicorn" aka King Sombra.
- Reports of My Death Were Greatly Exaggerated: Despite all evidence, including her torture by Sombra being over a thousand years ago, implying that she's long dead, she's alive and well, albeit very, VERY hungry.
- The Woobie: Needless to say, she is abused heavily, to the point that she is crippled by Sombra.
Outside of Equestria
Queen Faust
Former ruler of Equestria, Celestia and Luna's mother, Sunset's grandmother and head goddess of the Alicorn pantheon
Discord
Reformed god of chaos and love interest of Fluttershy (or so Rarity thinks)
Villains at Large
Queen Chrysalis
Psychopathic queen of the Changelings... who is far more than meets the eye.
- Been There, Shaped History: It turns out she's the human who Baldassare di Cavalcanti gave to King Sombra.
- Broken Bird: Being Crisalide della Lucca, alive and well in the present day, she's been through some serious shit. Returning to Earth marks the start of her finally starting to heal.
- Demonic Possession: The real Queen Chrysalis, Crisalide's Equestria counterpart, was attacked by King Sombra and her body parts were fused to Crisalide. This put Chrysalis' consciousness in Crisalide's head and it got ambiguous for a while just how in control of her actions Crisalide was.
- Devil On Your Shoulder: In "Paint the Sky" the real Chrysalis is this for Crisalide, trying to spur her back into her old villainy.
- Faking the Dead: The public believes she has been executed for her crimes. Nope, she's been given a fresh start on Earth because a lot of her crimes at least had a good enough excuse.
- Fish out of Temporal Water: It's been centuries, on both sides of the mirror, since she was taken from her homeworld. Both sides think she's dead, even if Sombra didn't kill her, until her identity is discovered in G Ao A Book 1. Part of her arc in "Paint the Sky" is her getting used to how Earth has changed in her absence.
- Walking Spoiler: Can't talk about a lot of tropes that apply to her without spoiling her true identity. Even the tropes' names give away too much.
King Sombra
Undead psychotic former ruler of the Crystal Empire
- The Caligula: Horrifically so, both to his subjects and others within his grasp.
- Moral Event Horizon: Crossed it even with his canon behavior, but what he did to "The Rose With the Broken Neck" was a new low when it came to light.
Lord Tirek
Exiled centaur nobility and murderous despot
Sable Loam
King of the werewolves and former follower of Sombra
Fairvista
Sable's mate and general of his forces
Torch Hammer
Disgraced Equestrian mage and now pirate scourge
