Beltrum Kingdom

    Flora Beltrum
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_pic07.png
Voiced by: Kaede Hondo (Japanese), Madeleine Morris (English)

The Second Princess of the Beltrum Kingdom and Christina's younger sister, Princess Flora Beltrum is a sweet and caring girl, but lacks the confidence to do anything herself.

  • Bookworm: Flora is stated to have a great fondness of books and reading as she quickly bonded with Liselotte over the topic.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: While she couldn't interact with him due to their difference in social status as well as her sister telling her to avoid him, Flora would show signs of jealousy when she saw other women taking an interest in Rio or him getting along with other women. This would continue after they had reunited and he was in disguise as Haruto, such as during the Galarc Banquet.
  • Cosmic Plaything: Being kidnapped thrice, forced to become a fugitive and condeming her savior twice, Flora's attempts to befriend Rio is shot down either by her sister or Rio himself. The poor girl just wants to thank Rio properly, but circumstances seems to always be against her.
  • Guilt Complex: Back at the Beltrum Royal Academy, she wanted to thank Rio (and possibly befriend him) after he saved her, but lacked the courage to defy her older sister. This causes her to watch as the boy she was interested in becomes isolated in school. By the time she musters enough courage to speak to him, it's too late as Rio is forced to leave the academy when he's become a Scapegoat for endangering her life. When she meets him again under his disguise as "Haruto", it's clear that Flora's still harboring such a deep-seated regret about it that she instinctively recognizes the older Rio even under disguise. When she finds out that Haruto is Rio after being rescued from a kidnapping attempt by Lucius Orgueil, she immediately tries to apologize and thank him, only for Rio to ask her to forget everything she hears, which she unwillingly accepts while crying in regret. She does become a bit more open about her interest in Rio afterwards, asking to have a talk with him in the future.
  • Hope Spot: After being reunited with Rio (who was posing as Haruto) and figuring out his real identity, she tries to apologize to him for everything he went through at the Beltrum Academy, only for Rio to play ignorant and say that he doesn't know what she is talking about, as well as asking her to be quiet about what she had heard about his past. This causes her to fall on the spot and cry over the fact that he did not wish to interact with her.
  • Morality Pet: She's one of the few people Christina is consistently nice to, which makes ignoring her during a banquet in the Galarc Kingdom all the more harder as Christina secretly thanks Rio for saving her sister before she leaves.
  • Noble Fugitive: Flora, Roanna Fontaine, Stewart Huguenot, Alphonse Rodan and Duke Gustave Huguenot are on the run from Beltrum due to Duke Helmut Arbor's coup.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Flora is normally quiet and withdrawn, as she rarely speaks up for herself. So it came as a suprise to others when she tried to ask a large number of questions to Rio (who was posing as Haruto).
  • Rescue Romance: Flora has been interested with Rio since he rescues her for the first time during the academy excursion into the wilderness, wanting to be his friend. His subsequent rescues of her makes her feelings lean in a more romantic way as she sometimes gives a look of envy while watching Rio interact with other girls.
  • Shrinking Violet: Despite entering the academy one year after Rio, she never finds an opportunity to properly thank him for half a decade for rescuing her when she was kidnapped in the slums. It doesn't help that Christina constantly discourages her from interacting with him.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After a series of misfortunes that Flora has undergone, she is able to interact freely with Rio, who finally acknowledges their past history in Volume 15. Prior to that, she is prevented by either her royal status, circumstances or Rio just distancing himself away from her.
  • White Sheep: She's the only member of the Beltrum royal family who disagrees with pinning the blame of the expedition incident onto Rio. It turns out that Christina also suspected foul play, but keeps her thoughts to herself.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Her family and the Beltrum nobility believe it's fine to sacrifice commoners for political pragmatism, but Flora doesn't.
  • Secret-Keeper: Flora slightly suspects Haruto is a cover for Rio ever since she meets the former, and her subsequent interactions with him solidified this train of thought. She gets her confirmation and more while listening to Lucius as he tries to taunt Rio by mentioning his parents and his mother's status as a former princess, making her one of the few people in the Strahl Region who knows of his Really Royalty Reveal.

    Christina Beltrum
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_pic06.png
Voiced by: Sayumi Suzushiro (Japanese), Madeleine Morris (English)

The First Princess and heir to the Beltrum Kingdom's throne, Christina Beltrum is beautiful, smart and skilled in magic. While she has a tough exterior that befits someone in her position, she nevertheless cares a lot for her younger sister Flora.

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Downplayed - in the Web Novel, Christina comes off as an Ungrateful Bitch towards Rio when he saves her and Flora from an assassin, but since Christina has never been in a dangerous situation like Flora's kidnappings, her demeanor towards Rio in the Light Novel and Manga is less ungrateful, but she remains snotty with a tone of animosity about him and his commoner status.
  • The Atoner: She regretted her past actions towards Rio, as she admitted that she was too rash and harsh in interacting and apologized for slapping him when she believed that he lied to her about knowing Flora's location after he kidnaping as well as the outdoor drill that resulted in him being wanted throughout the Strahl region.
  • Big Sister Instinct:
    • She cares about Flora, but also comes off as a Knight Templar Big Sister due to her discouraging the latter from befriending Rio. It's implied that she's afraid the two could start a relationship, which is frowned upon in Beltrum due to their different social standings.
    • This is also the reason why she immediately agrees to Sakata Hiroaki's plan to break off his engagement to Flora, as she doesn't want her sister to enter a loveless marriage.
  • Child Prodigy: She's often ties with Rio in their academy classes, considering the latter is a reincarnator whose Past-Life Memories gives him an unfair advantage academically. Downplayed as Christina doesn't think she is one when compared to Teen Genius Celia Claire and Rio, who in her eyes, reaches the same level as she does in a much shorter span of time.
  • Easily Forgiven: Played With. After saving her and Flora from Lucius and talking to each other, Rio says that he had already forgiven her despite her believing that she doesn't deserve to be forgiven for all of the terrible things that she and her kingdom have done to him, as she told him that he has every right to hate her. Though Rio just states that he doesn't want to waste his life on hatred and that she didn't personally do him any wrong after their initial encounter. She was thankful to his forgiveness and states that she intended to make up for all of the wrong he had to suffer through.
  • Endearingly Dorky: Together with Flora, the sisters are awkward and has no idea how to interact with Rio casually years after the academy since most of the time they only met at formal gatherings or with other people around, which required Christina to be stoic and aloof.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Christina may be a princess, but she still has a set of morals that she follows. Her disgust at the arrogance Hiroaki shows, combined with the unhappiness that Flora has to go through due to a forced engagement to him, leads her to ask Rio to defeat Hiroaki at full strength so he can be knocked down a few pegs after being spoiled by the nobility.
  • Exact Words: Christina gives her support to Hiroaki that he can pursue Princess Rosalie Galarc as his first wife after breaking his engagement with Flora, but she does not say that the Restorationist faction will help him with his marriage talks.
  • For Want Of A Nail: The Light Novel Volume 12 epilogue is composed of Christina asking herself "What If? Rio was treated nicely by her and Beltrum or had he been born as a noble?", while realizing that the kingdom's foolish pride based on pedigree had brought the nation down, simultaneously driving away a talented individual like Rio, who could have been their savior.
  • Humiliation Conga: Volume 12 isn't nice to Christina when it's dedicated at making her wallow in guilt with regards to Rio's treatment during his time in Beltrum. Not only is she forced to run away from her kingdom, she has to spend her journey under the care of the one person whose life Beltrum made exceedingly difficult, while fooling her into the belief that she is anything special. Christina also has to live with the knowledge that Rio could save Beltrum single-handedly, but she (and the kingdom, by extension) have no right to ask for his help as punishment for treating him as badly as they had all those years ago, while turning a blind eye to it just because of his supposed status as a commoner.
  • Hypocrite: She constantly berates Flora for paying attention to Rio during their academy days, but Christina paid a lot of attention to Rio herself when she knew his schedule, as pointed out by Flora during their talk in the stone house.
  • I Hate Past Me: Christina takes a dim view of her past arrogant belief in her royal lineage as well as other nobles who looked down on Rio under the same belief of false of superiority due to their noble lineage.
  • Jerkass Façade: She was cold and dismissive of Flora during the Galarc Banquet, but only because she was being watched by the Albor faction members, as she quietly thanked Rio for rescuing her.
  • Jerkass Has a Point:
    • While she's not a nice person, she's correct in criticizing Alphonse for his reckless leadership in the outdoor drill at the academy.
    • She also correctly pointed out the problem of Hiroaki's growing arrogance and how it made him a liability.
  • My Greatest Failure: Doing nothing to help Rio during their academy days is something she regrets to this day as royalty (driving away a potential asset for the kingdom) and as a person (ignoring someone she could have helped).
  • Noble Bigot: Christina was on her way to developing this mentality, but her meeting with Rio made her realize that she's not as special as she thinks she is.
  • No Listening Skills: When first introduced, Cristina was never a good listener, something that causes trouble in various occasions. When she saw Rio carrying Flora after he saved her, all she instantly accuses of kidnapping her and lying to her about knowing Flora's location after he kidnaping, refusing to listen to his explanation until the end, constantly interrupting him every time he opened his mouth. Both Rio and Vanessa call her out for it.
  • Politically-Active Princess: Unlike her sister Flora, who is used by Duke Huguenot as a Unwitting Pawn, Christina actively takes charge of Restoration after she becomes affiliated with them.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Jumps to conclusions when she sees Rio carrying an unconscious Flora, accusing of kidnapping her, refusing to listen to his explanation, believing it to be lies. Years later, she is ashamed of that.
  • Secret-Keeper: In Volume 15, she becomes one of the few people who knows of that Haruto is Rio and his status as the son of an exiled princess.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: After seeing Rio and Celia's interactions, she tells Rio that the Restorationists will keep sending him marriage requests in order to try to bring him to their side, but she asks Celia to become Rio's assistant in order to help minimize the amount so that it becomes easily manageable. She tells them that if they do want to have a romantic relationship, it's fine but Celia needs to be seen as his fiancée in order to have the nobles back off.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: It isn't immediately obvious to Rio, but constant interactions with her slowly shows that she's become kinder over the years since he last saw her at the academy. This becomes obvious to him after she discovers that Haruto and Rio are the same person, but she doesn't use this knowledge for Blackmail. Christina's internal monologue further cements this, starting from her regret since her academy days with regards to Rio, to refusing to exploit him further, and constantly fretting over how she should interact with him.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Even after it's established that Rio is the one who finds Flora in the slums, Christina still treats him like a pariah because of his social standing. It's hinted that it might be an act to keep up appearances, as implied in a side-story where she privately acknowledges the fact that Rio is highly talented, but Beltrum's class-based society prevents Rio from fully utilizing it. Turns out that this, along with the awkwardness due to how their first meeting went, are the reasons why she ignores Rio during their academy days.

    Duke Gustave Huguenot
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gustavehuguenot.jpg
Voiced by: Seirou Ogino (Japanese), Anthony Bowling (English)

The second most powerful individual in the Beltrum Kingdom after the king, Duke Gustave Huguenot later becomes an important figure in the Restorationist faction.

  • Abusive Parent: He raised Latifa to be an assassin and allows his son Stewart to torture her.
  • All for Nothing: He's one of the nobles who has Rio framed when Stewart accidentally pushes Flora off a cliff during the academy expedition, nearly causing her death if not for Rio rescuing her, all so House Huguenot can save face and maintain their political power in Beltrum over their arch-rivals House Arbor. Despite that, the Arbor family launches a coup and takes over the kingdom, anyways.
  • Irony: His actions in helping to frame Rio for Flora's fall during the outdoor drill was the last straw and the catalyst for him leaving the Beltrum Kingdom for good. Several years later, he would attempt to recruit Rio (who was hiding his identity under his "Haruto" alias) to Restoration. Christina later internally lampshades this, much to her frustration and guilt.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Duke Huguenot gives up on trying to recruit Rio in his Haruto disguise to the Restorationists after Rio becomes an "Honorary Knight" of the Galarc Kingdom, choosing to maintain their friendly relationship instead. Unfortunately, after Rio's duel with Hiroaki, he is more determined to recruit Rio to their cause as he has seen firsthand Rio's strength.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He acts permissively towards Hiroaki in order to gain his trust, allowing him to use the summoned hero as little more than a political figurehead for the Restorationist.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Duke Huguenot is just as cruel as his son, but is better about keeping up appearances and avoiding conflict with other nobles since they have the power to retaliate against him.
  • Related Differently in the Adaptation: Zigzagged - in the Web Novel, Gustave raped a fox beastkin slave, who birthed his bastard daughter Latifa, but the Light Novel, Manga and Animated Adaptation makes him Latifa's slave owner, instead. However, what happened in the Web Novel is alluded with Latifa often addressing Stewart as "big brother", making it unclear if it's true or not.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: He ships his daughter with Rio/Haruto, so that he can increase the latter's loyalty to Restoration and possibly bring him into the organization.

    Stewart Huguenot
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stewarthuguenot.jpg
Voiced by: Shun'ichi Toki (Japanese), Calvin Joyal, Caitlin Glass (young) (English)

Duke Huguenot's first son, Stewart Huguenot is one of Rio's bullies at the Beltrum Royal Academy and frequently abuses Latifa as a slave to House Huguenot.

  • Kids Are Cruel: Stewart belittling and bullying Rio is bad, but his treatment of Latifa is worse. Not only does he sadistically torture her on a regular basis, it's implied he also molested her while forcing her to address him as "big brother".
  • Related Differently in the Adaptation: Zigzagged - in the Web Novel, Latifa is Stewart's younger half-sister, a Child by Rape from their father Duke Huguenot on a fox beastkin slave; the Light Novel, Manga and Animated Adaptation turns him into Latifa's torturer. On the other hand, since Latifa calls Stewart "big brother" in the later adaptations, it isn't clear if their familial relationship is the same as before from the Web Novel.
  • Schoolyard Bully All Grown Up: The years after the academy hasn't changed Stewart at all, as shown when he tries to hit on Rio's party, then attempt to kill Rio for telling him to knock it off (in the Light Novel, this role goes to Alphonse instead - Stewart has a more level-headed approach to the situation once he realizes he is in front of Rio. He only steps in once Alphonse gets out of control).

    Alphonse Rodan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alphonserodan.jpg
Voiced by: Yūki Inoue (Japanese), Kevin K. Gomez, Darcy Maguire (young) (English)

The second son of Marquis George Rodan, Alphonse Rodan is the Childhood Friend of Stewart and another of Rio's bullies at the Beltrum Royal Academy.

  • General Failure: Alphonse makes a ton of poor decisions during the academy outdoor drill due to false directions from Reiss Vulfe. In the Light Novel, his group is nearly killed by a minotaur were it not for Rio stepping in secretly.
  • Hypocrite: Despite constantly lording his social status over commoners, Alphonse holds a grudge against the higher-ranked Duke Huguenot for calling him out over his misconduct.
  • Schoolyard Bully All Grown Up: He goes from a mere bully in the academy to an insane ghoul trying to destroy a city over a petty grudge.
  • Transhuman Treachery: After turning into a ghoul, he completely embraces the idea of razing the city of Amande in the Galarc Kingdom, since it'll allow him to get Revenge on Liselotte Cretia, Rio, Duke Huguenot and anyone else who slighted him. He also has no qualms about beating down his old friend, Stewart.

    Roanna Fontaine
Voiced by: Sayaka Kaneko (Japanese), Courtney Meeker (English)

Granddaughter of Garcia Fontaine, the director at the Beltrum Royal Academy, Roanna Fontaine is a frequent playmate and friend to the Princesses Christina and Flora.

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's harsh on Rio for falling behind in class at the academy, but is also quick to stand up for him when Alphonse accuses him of cheating his way to first place after exams.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: There is no mention or appearance of her after the Arbor Family's coup d'etat.

    Charles Arbor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chara_pic10.png
Voiced by: Atsushi Tamaru (Japanese), Blythe Melin (English)

The oldest son of Duke Arbor, Charles Arbor is vice commander of the royal family's guards, but a run-in with Rio in the slums instantly demotes him, elevating his ire towards the boy for many years to come.

  • Abhorrent Admirer: In Volume 5, Charles is engaged to Celia and is eager to make her one of his many wives. She hates this engagement so much that she allows Rio to "kidnap" her.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the Web Novel, a nameless interrogator is the one responsible for torturing Rio after Flora is rescued from the slums; in subsequent adaptations, Charles is the interrogator in order to give him his Establishing Character Moment.
  • Believing Their Own Lies: In the Light Novel, despite making a deceitful reason to pin Flora's kidnapping on Rio, he loses it after Rio keeps resisting his torture. Years later, Charles continues to be convinced that Rio was somehow involved regardless.
  • Dirty Coward: Doubling with The Load and indulges in Never My Fault simultaneously, Charles has the audacity to bark orders at Alfred Emerle and Shigekura Rui to protect him, while hiding behind their backs and continues to blame them if something goes wrong. He also slaps Celia as revenge for Christina's attack on him and plans to do something evil to Orphia. Needless to say, Rio is incredibly angered that were it not for Rui and Alfred, Rio would have killed Charles on the spot.
  • Exotic Extended Marriage: Before marrying Celia, Charles already has multiple wives, as is common among the nobility.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: In all adaptations after the Web Novel, Rio easily defeats Charles in a sparring match five years after their first meeting between Beltrum knights and academy students, humiliating him in front of the other knights. Notably, Charles is the only knight to lose his match.
  • Would Hurt a Child: In the Light Novel, Charles' screw up during a ceremony causes Flora to be kidnapped. In order to save his skin, he tries to torture Rio into making a False Confession as an accomplice to the crime.
