Magical Worlds inhabitants

    Sally Yumeno
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/233877.jpg
Mahariku maharita yanbara yanyanyan!
Voiced by: Michiko Hirai (1966 series); Yuriko Yamamoto (1989 series, Majokko Daisakusen), Fuyumi Shiraishi (Giant Robo)

The plucky witch princess of Astoria, and main character.

  • Adaptational Name Change: Originally her name was Sunny (which would later be referenced in the Giant Robo OVA's), but when the series was animated her name was changed to Sally and the name stuck resulting in all reprints of the manga bearing the "Sally" name.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: She is blonde in the manga and the 60s anime but a brunette in the 80s series.
  • Cute Witch: One of the first (if not the first) in anime.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: She is this when viewed under a modern lens.
  • Informed Attribute: The theme song's lyrics describe her as tomboyish, though aside from a mild mischevious streak and a bit of a temper, is definitely more girly.
  • Meaningful Name: "Yume" means dream. Thus, Yumeno Sally (in Japanese order, surname comes first) means "Sally of dreams" or "dreamy Sally."
  • Nice Girl: For the most part, Sally is a kind-hearted young girl.
  • Parental Substitute: Tries to be this to Poron and Cab.
  • Plucky Girl: While she doesn't openly rebel against the Magical World itself, she is not likely to change her mind when her parents confront her on something.
  • Princesses Prefer Pink: Wears a pink dress in the 1989 series.
  • Rebellious Princess: She runs away from home because she wants to see the Human world against her parents' wishes.
  • Red Is Heroic: Wears a red dress in the 60's series.
  • Town Girls: The Neither to Yoshiko's Butch and Sumire's Femme.

    Sally's parents

Sally's Dad voiced by: Kenji Utsumi (1966); Yusaku Yara (1989)
Sally's Mom voiced by: Mariko Mukai / Nana Yamaguchi (1966); Chiyoko Kawashima (1989)

The King and Queen of Astoria

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Sally's mom had light colored hair in the 60's anime (a similar shade to Sally's) but in the 1989 anime her hair is purple.
  • Maou the Demon King: Sally's father is referred to as the Maou (Japanese: "Demon King") in the 80's series by some of the characters in Astoria. Also, his father, Sally's grandfather is referred to as the Dai maō (Japanese: "Great Demon King"), as both titles show respective seniority in each other as well as their distinguished devilish appearances.
  • Parents as People: They're shown worrying a lot over Sally and guiding her as much as they can, but their advice (specially the King's) isn't flawless. 90% of their screen time is standing over a crystal ball from afar and the King verbally lambasts Sally and the gang (especially Cub and Poron) over instances of mischief that sometimes can trigger dire situations.
  • Ruling Couple: While the father is the king, the mother is pretty clearly his advisor.
  • Unnamed Parent: The Queen's name is "Cima" in the manga, but the King's name is never given in any of the series' media (not until the 80's series, at least).
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: The Queen was specifically said to be this in the 1989 series. It's even a plot point in an episode, as she was once subjected to a curse that her then-boyfriend/now-husband broke with a True Love's Kiss... and the Wicked Witch that enchanted her comes back for revenge and targets Sally and other human girls...

    Sally's grandfather
The Great Demon King
  • Canon Immigrant: Didn't exist in the manga.
  • Cool Old Guy: Although being a source of wisdom and a lovable, respected elder in Sally's family, he can be prone to comedic mishaps, wherever he tries to help Sally's friend Yoshiko maintain the housework and being an unwitting accomplice to a robbery while driving Mr. Hanamura's taxi. He's good friends with the Hanamuras and he is sometimes seen with them fishing together. In the second series, it was revealed that he was the husband of Persephone, the famous Greek goddess of spring who was the first queen of Astoria and that fact was a plot point when Sally recruits him to help recreate the Rape of Persephone to reunite Sally's classmate Azami with her mother.

    Cub
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/27959.jpg
Voiced by: Sachiko Chijimatsu (1966); Chieko Honda (1989)

  • Annoying Younger Sibling: To Sally, though they aren't brother and sister.
  • Comedic Spanking: Sally will occasionally summon a magical paddle to spank him if she feels his pranks have gone too far.
  • Mysterious Past: Nobody knows where he comes from, how did he become Sally's companion, etc. The 1989 series clears it up, stating that his original land (the Kingdom of Gold and Silver) was lost in a magical war, but right before that his parents gave him away to the Astorian Royal Couple as a baby so they'd give him a better life.
  • The Prankster: Loves to use his magic to mess with people. He usually doesn't mean harm, but often the consequences go well beyond his intentions.
  • Shapeshifting: Cub can change into various things at will. His most common shapeshifted form is of a crow.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With the Hanamura triplets.

    Poron
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/24bb4420da99c8657de87d44e13235a9.jpg
Voiced by: Fuyumi Shiraishi (1966); Kumiko Nishihara (1989)

  • Canon Immigrant: Is nowhere to be seen in the manga despite her prominence in both anime series
  • Character Development: In the first series, Poron was quite the Spoiled Brat and sometimes quite prone to tantrums. In the second season she's a little calmer and, while she does throw fits, there's more emphasis in her innocence.
  • The Cutie: A tiny, precious, really sweet Cheerful Child.
  • Happily Adopted: Poron's parents aren't around, and in the second series she says that even if she doesn't have them by her side, she's happy to be with her Cool Big Sis Sally. The original series strongly implies that Poron is actually a human child raised in Astoria (and that she'll eventually leave with her human parents), but in the second nothing comes out of it.
  • Mouse World: When Poron is first introduced in the 60's series, she demonstrates the power to shrink things to a miniature scale. In Episode 75, she renders Cub to miniature size, then Sumire's poodle and Mr. Hanamura and his taxi. Sally manages to get all of them back to normal, but not before Sally and Cub find Poron with the city's entire zoo collection and the cars and trucks that were travelling the expressway in town shrunk into miniature proportions.

    Karen

Voiced by: Miki Itō / Miyoko Aoba (1989)

    Selene
Voiced by: Hiromi Tsuru / Yuko Sasaki (1989)

    Sherry
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1480859117107.jpg

  • Cool Old Lady: A very sweet old lady and a rather reasonably-powerful witch.
  • The Ditz: Despite her magical power, she seems to be rather scatterbrained otherwise; i.e, she was almost executed for breaking a Magical World rule as simple and obvious as changing someone's destiny.

    Dabdab
  • Talking Animal: A fat, snarky cat that can talk and think like a human.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Dabdab is actually an angel from a magical realm in the sky, but he inadvertently became drunk at a Halloween party after his old friend played a prank on him and he ruined the party for everyone. The king of that realm punished him by turning him into a cat and banishing him to Astoria where he was adopted by Sally's folks.

Humans

    Sumire Kasugano
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/233860.jpg

Voiced by: Mariko Mukai / Nana Yamaguchi (1966); Aya Hisakawa (1989)

    Yoshiko Hanamura
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sally_004_a3_b3.jpg
Voiced by: Midori Kato (1966); Mie Suzuki (1989)

  • Dub Name Change: Is named Patricia in the French-Canadian dub.
  • Forced Transformation: Cub turns her into a dog in one episode as a prank. She attempts to write out her name to get help, but this just gets her stuck in the circus.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Subverted. Even though her hair is tied in pigtails, she's not very girly.
  • Girl Next Door: The closest to this among Sally's friends.
  • Plucky Girl: She's outspoken, Hot-Blooded, and doesn't take anyone's shit.
  • Promotion to Parent: Her mother died when she was a little girl and her father works long hours as a taxi driver, so she has to take care of the triplets.
  • Tomboy: Might have been the Trope Codifier for anime and manga as a whole. Unlike Sally, she'd DEFINITELY still be considered a tomboy today.
  • Town Girls: The Butch to Sumire's Femme and Sally's Neither.

    The Hanamura family

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/233867.jpg
The triplets
Tonkichi voiced by: Masako Nozawa (1966); Kyōko Tongū (1989)
Chinpei voiced by: Yukari Asai (1966); Mami Matsui (1989)
Kanta voiced by: Masako Nozawa / Keiko Yamamoto (1966); Junko Hagimori (1989)

Yoshiko's father and the triplets Tonkichi, Shinpei and Kanta

  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: The triplets may bother Yoshiko to hell and back, but when she's injured in a car accident, they're clearly very upset and have a LOT of trouble with the idea she might die.
  • Missing Mom: She died shortly before the 1960s series from illness.
  • Parents as People: The father clearly loves his four kids and the children love him back, but he can't take care of them as much as they need. More than once he's seen apologizing to Yoshiko for leaving the brunt of the child raising to her.
  • Same-Sex Triplets: Definitely
  • Strong Family Resemblance: The six members of the Hanamura family, the Missing Mom included, look like copies of each other.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: The three are this to Cab, as they initially bully him but later they become his best friends.

    Mr. Yamada

    Azami Koizumi
Voiced by: Maria Kawamura (1989)

    Sally's neighbors
  • Happily Married: For many, many years.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: The lady has a very cute cat as her pet, and she loves her very much. In the 1989 series the kitty runs away as a consequence of one of Cub's shenanigans, so Sally has to go talk to the local cats to find her.
  • Nosy Neighbor: A more innocent version of this. They're rather pleasant elders most of the time, it's just that their little neighbor happens to be a Magical Girl and at times they get caught in the middle of her magical mishaps by proxy, or at others they can't help being curious about what might be going on with her...
