Tempest DuJour (14th)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tdj_8441.png

Age: 46
From: Tucson, Arizona

"I'll trip a bitch, I'll cut up a bitch, I'll poison a bitch ..."

  • Berserk Button: Reading her on her age, as she says 'you're never too old to dream!'
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Mentions being forced to go through (now discredited) conversion therapy at the behest of her devoutly Mormon mother and how much damage it did to her self esteem.
  • Downer Ending: Her elimination, We Hardly Knew Ye or not, was pretty sad to watch with the new Untucked format — especially as Kandy Ho was again trying to make her feel insecure about her age.
  • Formerly Fat: Used to weigh over 400+ pounds before she decided that staying alive for her kids was more important than a bucket of fried chicken. Sadly, this ended up working against her when the judges point out her drag style seemed better suited for a big girl, and didn't do anything for her new, much slimmer body.
  • Gratuitous French: Her last name was chosen as a nod to her Southern upbringing, in that she wanted something that might sound fancy to someone from the south, even if it's actually pretty mundane (Du Jour means "of the day", like you might see on a restaurant's specials board).
  • Meaningful Name: In honor of her theater background, she is named after the Shakespearean play "The Tempest".
  • Open-Minded Parent: Is the father of two (along with her husband) through adoption. She's also completely open with her kids about her drag persona, and even lets them play with her wigs and make-up.
  • The Rival: A very short-lived one with Kandy Ho, when Kandy asked her right out the gate about her advanced age, and made comments about how her drag style is outdated and in dire need of an upgrade.
  • The Smart Girl: Outside of drag, she's an associate professor at The School of Theatre, Film & Television at The University of Arizona.
  • Statuesque Stunner: In addition to being one of the oldest queens in Drag Race history, she's also the tallest. Standing at a grand 6'6, she's an inch and a half taller than Season 4's large and in charge Latrice Royale.
  • Sudden Humility: After her elimination she regrets being somewhat standoffish during her time on the show, and that she'll miss out on making friendships and learning from the other queens of her season.
    • Thankfully, this was later subverted at some point. She revealed in an interview with Joseph Shepherd of the Exposed series that she frequently talks to her castmates even now, and has been more than accepted into the fold.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Subverted when she returns with the other eliminated queens in Episode 8 and gets a bit more of a backstory.

Sasha Belle (13th)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sbelle_9597.png

Age: 28
From: Iowa City, Iowa

"I can tell you every episode, what the challenge was, who went home. I feel like I've cracked the code."

  • Determinator: Had auditioned for Drag Race five times, making a pact with herself that despite the rejection she would keep applying until she made it.
  • Hairstyle Malfunction: Suffers from a small one during the Glamazonian Airways challenge when she couldn't let her hair down as smoothly as she was supposed to, sadly leading to her elimination.
  • Genre Savvy: Self-proclaimed as she proudly says she has watched every season of Drag Race, and has memorized every challenge, plus who won and who went home in said challenge ... and then Ru tells the group that she's changing the first challenge.
  • Genre Blindness: Despite this, she still commits the cardinal sin of trying to shirk the blame of her first runway by claiming the challenge was hard to understand (despite being the only queen who misunderstood it).
  • Know-Nothing Know-It-All:
    • Certainly came across this way after she claimed after memorizing every episode of Drag Race she had 'cracked the code', only to be eliminated the second episode into the season.
    • Despite being the second elimination that season, causing Ginger to have to do her first lip sync during her brief return in a team challenge and generally underperforming in the judges eyes with her wardrobe, she's the contestant who now stars in her own spin-off series, Sasha Belle's Drag Race.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: She's named after Beyoncé/Sasha Fierce.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Claimed this when she misunderstood the nude-illusion runway, strutting the catwalk in a nude-colored leotard instead of a "nude-illusion". However, as the other queens are quick to point out, she was the only person out of 14 queens to misunderstand the challenge.
  • Proud to Be a Geek: Has dragged before as Mystique from X-Men Film Series, complete with blue bodysuit and red wig.
  • Took a Level in Dumbass: When given a second chance to join the competition, she spends most of the time catching up with the other queens or otherwise milling around, much to her partner's irritation. One has to wonder if Sasha even wanted to come back into the competition at that point, despite working so hard to get onto the show in the first place and claiming she had "cracked the code" of Drag Race.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Gets called out by Pearl after Sasha named her the weakest link on the mainstage, Pearl upset that Sasha had been so nice to her face during the entire first episode up until that point.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Tried to treat the show like a true Reality TV competition, when Drag Race has more often focused on talent and charisma above everything else. Even afterwards she admits she was overthinking things which led to her elimination.

Jasmine Masters (12th)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jmasters_6217.png

Age: 37
From: Los Angeles, California

"No tea, no shade, no pink lemonade."

  • Crazy-Prepared: In an interview she revealed she brought a loaf of bread (and several other foodstuffs) in order to make quick sandwiches, and so as to avoid having to rely on whatever snacks the crew would provide her. From what has been said about the queens not being fed very well during the competition (normally only being given bags of chips and cookies on a regular basis) this was quite a bit of foresight.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: During Ru's first walk-through for the nude-illusion runway, Jasmine kept going on and on about how she wanted to walk the catwalk in a cocoon and then emerge like a butterfly, and kept saying that about three or four times over. Ru was so taken aback she actually excused herself from Jasmine without giving her any feedback!
  • Graceful Loser: While she was eliminated third, she took solace in the fact that she was defeated by her idol and best friend in the competition.
  • Grumpy Old Man: Old in drag standards anyway, but she venomously complains about the "young queens" of the competition (Trixie, Fame, Pearl, and Violet) in that they look too much alike, are too skinny, and they don't know anything about real drag since they're too young.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Took her drag name after actress Jasmine Guy.
  • Negated Moment of Awesome: For her "bearded lady" look, she came out with her back to the camera ready to stun, and turned around with a...charcoal beard like a child's hobo costume. She said it was because she's allergic to costume glue, but one would think she would have thought of a better workaround than that (like something that loops behind the ears). The judges at least praise her dress, but it's not enough to save her from the bottom two.
  • Noodle Implements: During the old lady drag mini challenge, Jasmine struts out with a loaf of bread like she just left the grocery store. It totally worked for her costume, but since she had no way of knowing what the mini challenge would be ahead of time, she just happened to already have it with her things. Even RuPaul was hilariously confused.
Ru: Where did you get a loaf of bread???
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: While it was quite clear she would be in the bottom two for utterly failing the Shakespeare challenge, she irked some of the other queens by having her things packed even before the lipsynch, but she already felt defeated and ready to go by that point.
  • Squee: Her reaction to realizing she'll be sharing a season with her drag idol Kennedy Davenport, or as she put it:
    Jasmine: I'm geeked! I'm geeked!
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In the first couple episodes she came across as overly excited and generally likable ... then episode 3 came around and she starts throwing some serious shade towards the younger queens in the competition, generally coming off as a bitter bitch for no real reason.
  • Worthy Opponent: When she and Kennedy had to lip synch against each other, Jasmine took small comfort that it was at least Kennedy who sent her home.

Mrs. Kasha Davis (11th)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kdavis_6236.png

Age: 43
From: Rochester, New York

"There's always time for a cocktail!"

  • The Alcoholic: Is very fond of her boxed wine.
  • Berserk Button: Due to the fact it took her seven audition tapes to even get on the show, queens that claim that they are 'over it' about the judges' critiques or that they don't care about being on the show anymore (read: Jasmine, Pearl, Violet, and Kandy) really get under her skin.
  • Determinator: As Alaska before her, she has auditioned for every single season of Drag Race.
  • Family-Friendly Stripper: How the other queens see her, although she likes to play it up sometimes even her "raunchy" humor is very family-friendly. She wasn't lying when she introduced herself as a suburban housewife drag queen.
  • Graceful Loser: Unlike previous queens this season, Kasha is very upbeat about her elimination. After auditioning for seven years, she was happy enough to simply be on the show at all, and she's happy with the connections she has made and the opportunities she'll have from here on out.
  • Suburbia Housewife: The basis of her drag character is as a suburban housewife who dreams of making it in show business.
  • Loophole Abuse: Won the 'Paper Dolls' mini-challenge by abusing the fact the only rule of the challenge was that she and her partner had to recreate Björk's infamous "Swan Dress" out of paper, and there was nothing stopping her from dressing in drag as well. As a result, she ends up dressing up as Joan Rivers and proceeds to mock interview Ru and her partner.
  • Manly Gay: Out of drag, MKD is bald and quite muscular.
  • Out of Focus: Despite generally giving a decent performance, there was not much focus on her prior to her elimination.
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: That's Mrs. Kasha Davis, but like many previous queens she's pretty relaxed about it.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Her singing voice, which has been described by Ginger Minj as both the voice of Ethel Merman and Paul Lynde’s lovechild, as well as the Cowardly Lion. Even Kasha herself gets in on the fun, saying her singing voice was Bea Arthur being channeled through her.

Kandy Ho (10th)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kho_1816.png

Age: 28
From: Cayey, Puerto Rico

"I hope you girls have a sweet tooth because Kandy Ho is in the house!"

  • Boring, but Practical: For her outfit for the "Death Becomes Her" runway was a rather pedestrian vampire costume that was criticized by the judges for showing little imagination, although during Untucked she admits that she only wore the outfit because she already knew was probably going to lip-synch, and the dress was aesthetically appropriate for the song she would be performing to.
  • Catchphrase: "This is right on my alley!"
  • Flat Character: Has been read by the judges for just being "pretty" and fading into the background.
  • Lovable Sex Maniac: Took the drag name 'Ho' for good reason, claiming that going even one day without sex is freakin' tough.
  • Spicy Latina: Straight out of Puerto Rico.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Of a sort. April Carrion of Season 6 wore a Kandy Ho shirt in the work room one episode.
  • Genre Blindness: Was probably not the brightest idea to call out her fellow competitor for being "old" when 3/4ths of the judging panel are, themselves, over the age of 45.
  • Irony: Despite being constantly read for her perma-stubble, during the "Bearded Lady" runway theme, she was praised by Michelle for getting her contouring right, despite literally wearing a beard at the time.
  • Mala Proper: When she claimed that the nude-illusion runway was 'right on her alley' ... even Ru had to stop and make sure that's really how she meant to say it.
  • Naïve Newcomer: While she is an established queen, she admits during the reunion she was this in regards to doing her own make-up. She explains in Puerto Rico queens can just sit in a chair and get painted to perform, and do not have to learn how to paint themselves if they do not want to (which explained her constant issues with paining on a beard).
  • No Social Skills: At least Tempest seems to think so, after she greeted Kandy, Kandy retorted with a rather curt "so how old are you?"
  • Out of Focus: Does not get very much in the way of screentime, even lampshaded by Pandora Boxx during Drag Center when she jokingly claims that she forgot Kandy was still even on the show.
  • Perma-Stubble: Invoked with her face make-up in which her chin was painted so dark Michelle Visage actually asked her directly if she meant for it to be a beard, before informing her she needs to start painting for TV, not for the clubs. By episode 6 her beard is back again, which was just one of the reasons for her elimination.
  • The Rival: Only lasted an episode, but she butted heads with Tempest DuJour after Tempest was offended that Kandy asked her about her age during first introductions, to which Tempest pointed out on the main stage by calling Kandy rude and shallow.
  • The Unintelligible: Averted. Unlike previous Puerto Rican queens, Kandy speaks perfect English. But then it turns out she's originally from Connecticut.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: Not only does she gloat about sending home the two oldest queens of the season, but when she herself is eliminated, she claims that the first thing she's going to do when she gets back to Puerto Rico is hold it over all the other queens' heads that she got on the show and they didn't.

Max (9th)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maxm_1735.png

Age: 22
From: Hudson, Wisconsin

"It’s a drag competition. If you’re not optimistic and having fun, then you’re not doing it right."

  • Animal Motifs: Black widow spiders. She stylises the 'x' in the name 'MAX' as the famous hourglass marking - and then there was her black widow-inspired outfit for the 'Leather and Lace' runway.
  • Bad Impressionists: She was eliminated from the show following a laughably bad impersonation of season four winner Sharon Needles in the Snatch Game. While she was praised for getting the look right, her performance incorporated none of Sharon's very witty personality and notoriously twisted sense of humor, as pointed out during the judge's critiques. Max claimed that she wanted to portray a "PG-13" version of Sharon, which begs the question - if she wanted to keep her Snatch Game performance PG-13, why choose to portray a queen who is so famously the opposite of that?
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: When Max won the ShakesQueer challenge the other queens realized just how talented she really was.
  • Celebrity Resemblance: She's likened to Madonna by Ginger Minj ... but not in a complimentary way:
Ginger Minj: Max is the Madonna of RuPaul's Drag Race. She's got a fake mole on her face and a fake British accent that comes and goes with the breeze.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Self proclaimed 102 year old resident of the Land of Oz, and looks forward to Drag Race as a way to "feel out the real world". Although this seems to be just a character, as during the show she's quite clever and level-headed.
  • Deliberately Monochrome: Her entire style, usually with a Splash of Color on her blood red lips. She actually paints to look not just grey, but realistically greyscale as though she just stepped out of a 1940's glamour shot. Out of drag, her alabaster skin, grey dyed hair and black outfits give the same effect.
  • Driven to Suicide: Her "Death Becomes Her" look, in which her character had ripped out her own heart out of grief, and carried it around in an ornate box.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Uses her real first name, and Only that name.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Despite being a genuinely nice queen, she is not a pushover. When Ginger felt upset but guilty over Kennedy winning a challenge when she did most of the work, Max points out that it isn't shade if you're right, and Ginger has a right to be annoyed by being passed over.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Well, hair of silver or platinum ... or white gold at best ... but she certainly qualifies for all the other credentials, being young, optimistic, sweet, and dislikes vulgarity ... although at times her attitude seems to cross into Purity Sue territories.
  • Heroic BSoD: During her final episode when she's in the bottom three, she complains about her corset causing her to be unable to breathe and has to take it off and sit down, before she suddenly bursts into song ... although afterwards Max has clarified that she really did feel dizzy in that moment, and the singing was due to Ru asking her to sing a few lines from Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and Max choosing to sing A Star is Born instead, so it wasn't as sudden as the editing made it appear.
  • Implausible Hair Color: Despite only being 22 years old she prefers using silver-gray hair in her drag, to the point where it's considered her signature look. She's even dyed her natural hair silver-gray as well. It got to the point where the judges got irritated after repeatedly asking Max to try and wear a wig that wasn't grey or white — if only just once. The following episode Max wears two different non-grey wigs and is immediately eliminated... and one of the judge's critiques was that they missed the grey hair.
  • Lighter and Softer: Her drag and comedy styles, as she has a great distaste for vulgar humor or sexual themes.
  • Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: Will sometimes speak with a British-esque inflection (Transatlantic) ... but only sometimes ... and despite the fact she's from Wisconsin, not England. She gets called out for this during the Reunion, where she tries to reason that she isn't speaking with an accent, and that it's just diction and elocution.
  • Out of Focus: Although not uncommon for a queen to be thrown to the wayside after her elimination, the fact that so little spotlight was given to Max during her return episode or the Reunion seemed rather odd, especially since prior to her departure Max had won two challenges and was the front-runner in the competition.
  • Mystical White Hair: Especially invoked in her dead girl look.
  • Nice Guy: In team challenges she is extremely supportive of her teammates, always trying to encourage positive energy.
  • Not Distracted by the Sexy: She is borderline-offended when the other queens start talking about who they would like to have sex with among the cast and who is a top or bottom. Max later explained that she's not that much of a prude, but she was aware that her grandparents and eleven year old brother would be watching the show and wanted to keep her own appearance family-friendly.
  • Retraux: The majority of her looks. Elegant society lady in glamour drag, Bettie Page-esque looks in more revealing outfits.
  • Perky Goth: Many of her outfits had a gothic tinge to them — classic Victorian novel gothic, not the modern variety.
  • The Quiet One: Tends to avoid drama when she can, so especially during Untucked she will sit on the sidelines and hold her tongue.
  • Rousing Speech: Gives one to Jaidynn after the latter broke down in tears during their ''ShakesQueer" rehearsal. Even Ru and Michelle seemed a bit taken back at just how supportive and kind Max acted.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Standing at 6'5, she's one of the tallest competitors in the show's history.
  • Sour Prudes: Subverted as during the reunion she laments how she came off as being a prude, but claims her behavior was just a reaction to the other queens constantly talking about sex non-stop and her being over it (just in that moment).
  • Think Happy Thoughts: When the other queens are being negative and bringing her down, she'll just try her hardest to stay cheerful and optimistic.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Tries to stay quite sanguine, even saying outright if you're not being optimistic in a drag competition, you're not doing it right.

Jaidynn Diore Fierce (8th)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jdf_2968.png

Age: 25
From: Nashville, Tennessee

"If I get eliminated, it's gonna be a real drag show because security will have to drag me out, 'cause I'm not going home. No ma'am, no ham, no Pam, no cauliflower, no cornbread, no green beans. I'm not going home."

  • Bad Impressionists: For the Snatch Game, she decided to play Raven-Symoné. Despite getting several references to That's So Raven correctly, her jokes were one-note and unfunny. This landed in the bottom two for the second straight week.
  • Big Beautiful Woman
  • Catchphrase: "No ma'am, no ham, no Pam..." though the exact wording varies.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has a breakdown during the "Romy and Juliet" ShakesQueer challenge, as all the pressure of struggling with an acting challenge and being on the show in general seemed to hit her all at once.
  • My Nayme Is: It's not Jayden, it's 'Jaidynn'.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: In honor of her love of fashion, she took part of her name from world-renowned designer Christian Dior. Her last name comes from Beyoncé's alter-ego Sasha Fierce.
  • Nice Guy: Was shown as friendly and full of energy on the show. Katya had even gone on record as stating if Season 7 had let the queens vote for Miss Congeniality (instead of a fan vote) Jaidynn would have won by a landslide.
  • Transparent Closet: She admits that she never actually came out to her family, despite the fact that she's a drag queen and is about as Camp Gay as they come. Though it isn't clear if Jaidynn is trying to stay closeted to them, or if they're in denial.
  • You Are Fat: Although she claims that her "fupa is sexy" she admits that she's the constant target of these jabs (especially during the Awards Ceremony challenge), and finds them very irritating.

Miss Fame (7th)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mfame_6776.png

Age: 29
From: New York City, New York

"I'm ready to show everybody what I'm meant to do, which is to leave a beauty mark on the face of the planet."

  • Attention Whore: Certainly thinks she belongs center stage ... although this seems to be more of a facade, as she's admitted in Untucked she's well aware of her weaknesses in acting and performance, and is using the show to expand her horizons.
  • Country Mouse: Although quite fabulous now, she grew up on a chicken farm. She gets a chance to talk about it in episode 5, much to her unabashed glee.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Her makeup and fashion is always stunning, but her relative lack of experience and inability to do ... well, everything else that the competition requires ultimately resulted in her elimination.
  • Disappeared Dad: Her biological father was apparently not a factor in her life, and also recounts that her grandfather (who raised her) was murdered when she was only 15 years old.
  • Expy: With her stunning looks, flawless makeup, and day job as a makeup artist, she was initially seen as one of Raja. However, as the show progresses, it becomes quite clear that is all she has in common with Raja, as Fame ends up stumbling in well, everything else in the competition.
  • The Fashionista: Self-admitted, modeling and runways are what she specializes in.
  • Glory Seeker: Took the name "Fame" because that's what she's after, and doesn't hide the fact she considers Drag Race as the next logical step towards her goal.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: For the "Ugliest Dress Ever" runway, she struts the stage in a tent-sized, shapeless dress that should have been ugly, but she styles and accessorises it flawlessly (her strong-suit) so it came off as beautiful to the judges. Later, when up for elimination the giant dress made dancing all but impossible, practically handing her opponent a "shantay, you stay".note
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Following an emotional video message from Ginger Minj's husband in the episode 5 Untucked, she has an unexpected breakdown due to feeling such deep sympathy for Ginger. She even admits that she has no idea why she is crying so much during.
  • Motor Mouth: Likes to talk and talk and talk...see the Running Gag below.
  • Non-Answer: We get this exchange after RuPaul asks if Miss Fame has any acting experience ...
Miss Fame: Not yet. I mean I’ve had some opportunities that could be considered like an entryway to acting but not to the degree that I’d like to see my future evolve into.
  • Parental Abandonment: Says that her mother was too interested in doing drugs to raise her, so she was instead raised by her loving grandparents.
  • Phrase Catcher: "So how is your head?" with Miss Fame ultimately missing the joke (until Episode 8, that is)
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Trixie Mattel, although with the two enjoying hugging and cuddling so much some of the other queens have pointed out their closeness is reaching Unresolved Sexual Tension territory.
  • Running Gag:
    • Twice she has missed a "How's your head?" joke from Ru—the first being an oral sex joke made famous by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, and the second referring to the giant knife in her head in her "Death Becomes Her" runway look. Instead she took the question literally and blabbed on about her feelings and focus.
    • Also, her running her mouth, as Miss Fame just loves to talk ... and talk, and talk, and talk! It finally comes to a head in episode 8, where Ru finally tells her she needs to shut up and listen.
  • Second Place Is for Losers: In two challenges in which she did admirably but missed the win she's expressed annoyance that she's "just safe" when she feels she's "stronger than safe". Some fans have even started likening her to first season's Shannel in her 'I should have won'-attitude.
  • So Beautiful, It's a Curse: Was warned by the judges that by the second episode they already know she can serve model beauty, but now want to see if she has what it takes to perform and entertain as well. As a side note, at episode two she is the earliest queen to receive the 'stop relying on that body' critique ever.
  • Squick: In-universe, she was absolutely repulsed by Jasmine Master's comment about Jaidynn's bunions, how she needs to "pop those corns to feed the children".
  • They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!: Miss Fame. Double-subverted in that she's married, and therefore is a "Mrs." not a "Miss", and that for the most part the other queens just call her "Fame" instead of using her full name.

Trixie Mattel (6th)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tmattel_5718.png

Age: 26
From: Milwaukee, Wisconsin

"Drag queens always say paint for the back row ... I paint for the check cashing place down the street."

  • Be Yourself: Trixie managed to learn this lesson quick and managed to win the challenge to be brought back on the show by going all out as funny and high-camp as possible. For the remainder of her stay after that she did her best to put her comedy on the forefront, but unfortunately was constantly paired up with Ginger, who managed to always swallow up the spotlight with her hamminess. Trixie has since admitted that she did find herself holding back on her normal flamboyance and humor that season because she was worried that the judges wouldn't understand or appreciate the sort of image she goes for, which focuses on comedy rather than glamour.
  • Break the Haughty: During the Prancing Queens Untucked she is quite sure she's a shoe-in for the win, while agreeing everyone else (especially her dancing partner) needs to be ready in case they need to lip-synch. Then Ru tells them they are going to be judges in pairs, and then Trixie gets eliminated by her dancing partner.
  • Graceful Loser: After her elimination she takes full responsibility that it was her own fault for being in the bottom 2, and takes solace in the fact her leaving at the very least means her friend Pearl can remain on the show. Averted for her second elimination, which she completely blamed on Ginger.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: After being eliminated from the show the second time, Trixie claims if the showrunners ever ask her back again, she'll say no and just "stay home and play video games". She later returned for All-Stars 3, for which she took the crown.
  • Informed Attribute: Her Camp comedy ended up being this, the judges saying that although Trixie says she's camp and dresses like she's camp, she just wasn't all that campy or funny during her time on the show.
  • Insult Backfire: The name Trixie was a nickname from her abusive step-dad whenever she would act too sensitive or too feminine as a child.
  • Irony: The first time she gets eliminated it is because she wasn't delivering enough Camp comedy in the challenge, the second time she gets eliminated it is because she was delivering too much camp comedy in the challenge.
  • Jack of All Stats: Ends up being her downfall, in that she tried so hard to not suffer Crippling Overspecialization for her Camp comedy that in the end she doesn't bring the funny, even for the comedy challenges.
  • Lesser of Two Evils: When she's brought back into the competition, pretty much every other queens admits that they didn't want anybody to come back, but if it had to be someone, they are glad it was Trixie.
  • Mistaken for Servant: Despite having a very distinctive "Barbie on LSD" drag aesthetic, out of drag Trixie looks and dresses like a very average, nondescript young man. She recounted in an interview that one of the other queens, upon seeing Trixie out of drag for the first time, mistook her for a studio intern and asked her to fetch them a Red Bull.
  • My Greatest Second Chance: RuPaul gives the eliminated queens a chance to rejoin the competition, leading to her and Pearl teaming up and winning the main challenge, allowing her to redeem herself.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Mattel, Inc., the toy company that makes the Barbie doll.
  • Never My Fault: For her second elimination, she claims outright it was the fault of her dancing partner, Ginger Minj, and that she shouldn't have been sent home.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Her audition tape was one of the funnest of all seven seasons according to Ru ... this just made the fact she gets herself eliminated for being unable to be funny during a comedy challenge that more tragic, though.
  • Oh, Crap!: This was her reaction (clarified afterwards) during the Prancing Queens challenge when Ru informs the queens they are going to be judges as pairs. Trixie felt her performance alone was win-worthy, but knew paired with Ginger she was probably going to have to lip-synch.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Feels this way when she is paired off with Ginger Minj, that although she's trying her hardest she cannot compete with Ginger's raw energy and charisma.
  • Parental Marriage Veto: Trixie's boyfriend's parents apparently loved her dating their son ... until they discovered she was a drag queen.
Trixie: His mom said, "Trixie’s clown drag makes me sick to my stomach."
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Miss Fame, although a few of the queens accuse the two of being closer than that, Trixie says she simply connects with Miss Fame better than any Drag Queen she's ever known from the clubs.
  • She's Back: Pearl brings her back into the competition after the two team up and win the main challenge. Too bad she only lasted one more episode before getting sent home again.
  • Shrinking Violet: As the other queens note, she has a big personality and lots of energy in the workroom, but once Trixie gets to the challenge proper all of that exuberance seems to disappear.
  • Uncanny Valley Make Up: As evidenced by her above quote, she purposely invokes this trope. And her look on season 7 is a toned down version of her look, which everyone gets to see in the reunion, on UNHhhh, and when she returned for All-Stars 3.

Katya (5th + Miss Congeniality)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/katya_4887.png

Age: 32
From: Boston, Massachusetts

"Katya is at the intersection of glamour and comedy ... and you can find her right on the corner selling her ass."

  • Bilingual Bonus: Entered the competition speaking Russian, and during her first Confession Cam the producers were kind enough to display her full drag name in Russian letters.
    Katya: Давай cезон семь! note
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Her Confession Cam clips can at times be a real thing to behold.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Describes herself as just your average, run-of-the-mill Russian, prostitute, bisexual, transvestite hooker.
  • Genre-Busting
  • I Am Not Pretty: Found it hysterical when she found out just about everyone thinks she's hot as a guy, saying in her opinion she looks like an ugly, balding, middle-aged retired math teacher dying of cancer out of drag.
  • Identical Stranger: Quite a few fans have pointed out that Katya looks a lot like Willam.
  • Incoming Ham: Is the most likely to enter the workroom doing some sort of Silly Walk, either scuttling like a crab or being wheelbarrowed by Ginger Minj.
  • Hooker with a Heart of Gold: Her drag character is this incarnate.
  • Large Ham: In the confessionals Katya says everything as if it's a matter of life or death and there is no middle ground with her.
  • Metaphorgotten: Her entirely made-up-on-the-spot outfit explanations tended to go in... unexpected directions. The description of her sparkly reunion outfit cape takes the cake:
Katya: A retired Russian hooker... moves to Mexico city... to start a... Twin Peaks cosplaying knitting circle...
  • Mr. Vice Guy: Suffers from several crippling addictions, from alcohol to meth, although she's clean and sober now. Ru even calls her out that she seems to be addicted to anxiety, which Katya soon realizes might actually be the case.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Her full drag name is Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova, named after Russian Olympic gymnasts Yekaterina Lobaznyuk, Yevgeniya Petrovna Kuznetsova, and Elena Zamolodchikova.
  • Nice Girl: Season seven's Miss Congeniality.
  • Older Than They Look: Katya was only 32 during the filming of season 7, and after the show she makes fun of how old she looks in drag and out. During the critiques for the Leather and Lace runway, Tamar Braxton says she looks like Britney Spears at 45; Violet hearing about it drives them both into fits of laughter.
  • Overly Long Name: Just call her Katya, because "Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova" is a bit of a mouthful.
  • Sensual Slavs: The entire basis of her drag character, in reality she's from Boston. Seriously downplayed during the season, as Katya is terrified of doing her Russian routine for the show and failing (despite it being her specialty).

Kennedy Davenport (4th)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kdavenport_4101.png

Age: 33
From: Dallas, Texas

"I spin, I kick, I flip, I jump off the stage in six inch heels. That's what puts the diva in it."

  • Catchphrase: "The struggle is real" and "next", as well as some variation of "opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one".
  • Cloudcuckoolander: She's normally pretty straightforward, but her "Death Becomes Her" runway look — which lends her the appearance of a savaged dead chicken, as well as the backstory behind it — is perhaps the most bizarre outfit in Drag Race history. And that's saying something.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Disappeared Dad: Her father had only recently passed a few years prior to this season. He was also the one who told Kennedy she needed to audition for Drag Race, and after he died she realized it was finally time to do so.
  • Iconic Outfit: the aforementioned "Death Becomes Her" runway look - for all the wrong reasons
  • It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time: As team leader for "MacBitch" she thought it would be a great idea to have everyone play roles outside of their comfort zones so everyone can show versatility (having Jasmine play valley girl, Violet play ghetto, Pearl as the narrator, etc.). She quickly realized this was a terrible idea and changes some of the cast around, but by then time was lost and the damage was done, causing her to end up in the bottom 2 for that challenge.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: During the penultimate episode after Pearl and Violet are hurt after Kennedy and Ginger talk down about them as to why they shouldn't be the Next Drag Superstar, Kennedy very pointedly reminds them that not only did Ru ask them directly why their competitors shouldn't win, but Ru has done so every season, so they should of known it was coming. On top of that, Kennedy also notes whatever she and Ginger had said they had said to the girls' faces before, so it wasn't like their reads came out of nowhere.
  • Malaproper: During her speech to explain why she should win, she claimed to "condone" herself in a professional manner and that the two younger queens don't "condone" themselves that way. She meant to say "conduct". It goes unmentioned in the show, but viewers had a field day with it.
  • Phrase Catcher: Also doubles as a Call-Back with "LaGuardia ... Newark ... Kennedy!" (the three international airports in the New York City area)
  • Promoted to Parent: During her lunch with Ru, she talks about as a child she had to take care of her disabled sister. She also reveals since their father had recently passed away, she was having to do it again.
  • Recursive Crossdressing: Her Little Richard impersonation for "Snatch Game." While some contestants (including two this season) have impersonated other drag queens, this was the first time someone straight-up portrayed a man. However, Little Richard's campy style and mannerisms were a natural fit and Kennedy stole the show and won the challenge (along with Ginger's Adele). Even Michelle—who makes it no secret that she hates boy drag—praised her for it.
  • Southern Belle: The "Dancing Diva of Dallas".
  • Spirited Competitor: Most evident during the "Conjoined Queens" challenge, when given the chance to pair the queens up, and therefore form mismatched pairs to screw her competitors over, she went out of her way to pair the queens up with someone as aesthetically similar as possible. The only exception to this was Jaidynn and Tempest, although Kennedy said afterwards although they were an odd couple, they both said they had a lot of costume making experience to even out their disjointed looks. Kennedy claimed if she won this challenge she wanted to it with everyone at their best, and not because she put them at a disadvantage.

Pearl (runner-up)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pearldq_4773.png

Age: 23
From: Brooklyn, New York

"I describe Pearl as a kind of robotic Stepford wife bitch."

  • Book Dumb: Has never heard of Macbeth before, although she says outright she doesn't care if that makes her come off as young and illiterate.
  • Broken Pedestal: Pearl is often characterized as having a very "fuck it" attitude during the season, as you'll see in the tropes listed below. This was finally explained in an interview. Early in the season between filming segments, Pearl tried thanking Ru for the opportunity and lifelong inspiration, only for Ru to coldly reply, "Nothing you say matters unless that camera is rolling." This killed Pearl's spirit and was the reason she ended up coasting through the season.
  • Catchphrase: "Flazéda." Nobody (including Pearl apparently) was sure if she was trying to say "la-dee-da", "laissez-faire", "fus ro dah", or what. It became something of a Running Gag since then and is now available as a perfume!
  • Dark and Troubled Past: During her pre-finale dinner with Ru, Pearl describes a terrible period in her life, which began from age 7 onwards. This causes her extreme emotional distress and Ru decides not to ask her to elaborate note
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Defrosting the Ice Queen: In episode 4, when she has to lip sync against one of her best friends, Trixie Mattel. Upon being declared the winner, she bursts into tears and hugs Trixie before she leaves. She also admits on Untucked that she feels that Trixie deserves to stay more than she does.
  • Emotionless Girl: Can come across this way, with the judges saying outright she acts like she's always on Valium or Lithium or something similar.
  • In-Series Nickname: The other queens dub her stiff dancing style as "PEARL SMASH!"
  • Informed Attribute: When music producer Lucian Piane asks her how she would describe her stage performances and she replies that they are "Wild"... which is not really a word one would use to describe Pearl's overly chill, borderline-sleepwalking demeanor.
  • Manly Gay: As with MKD, Pearl has a conventionally handsome masculine face, as well as a deep, surfer/stoner dude type voice, which makes her transformation into a queen all the more impressive.
  • No Social Skills: According to the other girls she comes off as very cold and over it... although they admit they might just be misreading her style.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: When Pearl had a minor breakdown and almost quit the competition, several queens afterwards keep referring to Pearl as the queen who "doesn't want to be there". It finally reaches a head in Untucked when Pearl has to explain that although she did have a moment where she wanted to leave (for about an hour), she came back, won that episode's challenge, and has been fighting to stay ever since. Gets brought up again by Ginger Minj in the penultimate episode, which completely pisses Pearl off.
  • Only One Name: Her full drag name is Pearl Liaison, but she only used the first part on the show.
  • Pretty Boy: She's very handsome out of drag, which is hilariously brought up in the finale:
Pearl's Mom (having set up a fan site for her son): Pearl's had so many messages from young gay men...
    RuPaul:...looking for sex.
  • Sleepyhead: Her most common criticism is that she has "sleepy eyes" and that she seems to be "sleepwalking" through the competition. By the third episode Ru has had enough of the sleepy act and gives Pearl an ultimatum:
RuPaul: Wake. Up. Pearl! Wake up!
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Admits that back home everyone always tells her how fabulous and wild she is, and so she just assumed when she got to the show the judges would be obsessed with her ... which ended up not happening.
  • The Stoic: Her drag character, although she also claims to suffer from social anxiety which only adds to her stoicism.
  • The Stoner: Probably averted, but Michelle Visage asks her point blank if she's a stoner since she always seems so chill and low energy.
  • Technician vs. Performer: While her dancing during the Prancing with the Queens challenged was called stiff (which worked for the Charleston half, not so much for the twerking half), she was praised for showing great energy.
  • Uncanny Valley Makeup: Was read by the other girls for painting herself to have a "bitch face" and "sleepy eyes".
  • Vocal Dissonance:
    • Has quite the masculine drawl, even while in drag. During her introduction she even greeted the other queens with a very mannish "'Sup?"
    • Dropped her voice even deeper for the Shakespearean challenge ... to which Ru and Michelle very quickly tell her was a very bad idea.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Several queens were perturbed she claimed to be "over it" about the show and the judges criticizing her, since there are hundreds of queens who would give anything to be a part of Drag Race (Mrs. Kasha Davis in particular was upset she was eliminated when Pearl doesn't even seem to want to be there anymore).

Ginger Minj (runner-up)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gingerm_3072.png

Age: 29
From: Orlando, Florida

"I am an overweight, asthmatic, chain-smoking, crossdresser from Orlando, Florida. I like to describe myself as a glamour toad."

  • Bait-and-Switch: "I've done Shakespeare plenty... and he liked it every time"
  • Bears Are Bad News: In what's perhaps the first time the show has referenced real bears, for Ginger's "Death Becomes Her" runway look, she's being eaten by a grizzly.
  • Big Beautiful Woman
  • Big Eater: Her Adele impersonation for "Snatch Game." It's interesting to note that nobody called her on having the same schtick as Latrice Royale in Season 4, though Ginger likely got a pass for doing her celeb justice.
  • Big Fun: Knows how to land a joke or hilarious one-liner, whether it's reading one of the other queens or making a jab at her own expense.
  • Catchphrase: "I just about flooded my basement!" her most common retort if there's a sexy man or men in the room.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Says that her life was miserable before she met her husband, who was the first person in her life to ever make her feel beautiful and talented.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Although she has no problem delivering camp glamour, she always has trouble when asked to delivery actual beauty, since Ginger feels she's not attractive at all. It really reaches a head in the Prancing Queens challenge which not only forced her to dance, but to dress up half as a beautiful woman and half as a handsome man. She says outright it was her worst nightmare realized since when she dances she feels everyone is judging how she looks and the way her body jiggles.
  • I Can't Dance: Although it didn't stop her from winning the Glamazonian Airways lip-synch and dancing challenge, it does hold her back in the Prancing Queens challenge.
  • In-Series Nickname: Ginger likes to refer to herself, along with Mrs. Kasha Davis, Kennedy Davenport, and Jasmine Masters (and later, Katya), as the "Bitter Old Lady Brigade".
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Of a sort, when a challenge calls for acting or comedy, she is cocky and confident, but when it's something outside of her comfort zone, like dancing, beauty, or sewing, she seems to shut down and gets ready to pack her bags to go home.
  • Mathematician's Answer: One of her responses as Adele in Snatch Game takes this form:
RuPaul: Where in England are you from?
    "Adele": My house...
  • Meaningful Name: Her name literally means "Red Vagina" in British slang.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Ginger Minj claimed to be both a terrible dancer and seamstress and multiple points during the show, and indeed her two trips to the bottom two came on a dancing and a sewing challenge. However, out of drag she has had a very successful stage career with multiple credits for costume design and choreography, leading many fans to conclude it was an act.
  • Oh, Crap!: Her reaction after poking fun at the "failure" of RuPaul's Drag U, and Ru very pointedly informed her that Drag U was actually her favorite job ever, and that it changed people's lives.
  • Running Gag: Apparently when not on-camera she likes to mention she lives just 10 minutes from Gatorland ... a lot, according to the other queens.
  • Sad Clown: During her lunch with Ru she admits that Self-Deprecation and telling jokes was how she got through the tough times in her life. She even says that life is just a giant parade of assholes, and the only way to survive is to make yourself the parade grand marshal!
  • Self-Deprecation: A self-described "Glamour Toad".
  • Stealing the Credit: Inverted as she expresses frustration that in team challenges she's quick to offer her comedic expertise to her teammates and they win the challenges. She points out if she wants any chance at the top three she has to stop being so nice and focus more on herself. This leads to...
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Although she styled herself as a self-deprecating "bitter old lady", her attacks on the younger queens were limited only to Untucked at first, before ending up on the main show itself.
  • Younger Than They Look: Despite being the de facto leader of the "Bitter Old Lady Brigade", she's actually only 29 years old (not even old by normal Drag Race standards).
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Has an irrational fear of being attacked by sharks.

Violet Chachki (winner)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vchachki_8283.png

Age: 22
From: Atlanta, Georgia

"My biggest strength is probably aesthetics. I'm very visually appealing ... Is that conceited?"

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Has been picked last for nearly every team challenge, the other queens saying outright she just has a bad energy about her that makes them want to not work with her, despite knowing she's talented. She pulls herself out of this trope's grasp later in the season as she Took a Level in Kindness.
  • Brutal Honesty: When called out on her "mean streak" in Untucked she claims it's really not intentional, she's just honest about her opinions regardless of who she may end up offending.
  • Can't Take Criticism: Claims outright to hate Michelle Visage because she doesn't agree with Michelle's harsh critiques. Despite the fact that Violet won the challenge in question, she was still bent out of shape over the one negative critique she received. Ginger Minj is quick to point out that it's Michelle's job to be a judge, and Violet is being overly sensitive.
  • Catchphrase: "Come through!"
  • Costume Porn: Upstages every drag queen present at the Season 8 finale by showing up in a breathtaking hooded ballroom gown, cinched for the gods, dripping in opulent jewelry, covered in bugs and makeup that made her look like she was a corpse, and sporting a latex crown that seemed to grow right out from her skull. It was glorious.
  • Expy: Her Hello Kitty character was pretty much literally herself imagined as Hello Kitty, she even named her character "Lavender Trinket".
  • The Fashionista: Her runways were always impeccable, fashion and silhouettes being one of her strongest attributes.
  • Hidden Depths:
    • During the Glamazonian Airways challenge, Michelle Visage said although Violet puts up a beautiful and poised front, she can see there's a clown hidden in there, which she hopes Violet will bring out to the surface more often.
    • Also, when Miss Fame has a minor breakdown remembering the murder of her grandfather, it's Violet (and Trixie) who hug and comfort her.
  • I'm Not Here to Make Friends: Claims she came on the show to impress the judges, not to make friends with her competitors. However, she points out this attitude made things a lot harder on herself since it meant she often felt isolated while the other queens all had each other to lean on when they felt down or nervous.
  • Impossible Hourglass Figure: Like to gloat that she has the smallest waist in Drag Race herstory. For her Death Becomes Her look, she struts the runway with a waist so cinched she actually walks the stage with an oxygen tank ... see for yourself here. According to her, it's eighteen inches — less than half her shoulder width.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As the season progressed she went from being a Jerkass to this. During the season recap episode, Alaska even calls her a "bitch with a heart of gold".
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Even the other queens will admit Violet does make a good point every so often, it's just the fact she's so prone to complaining when things don't go her way, or constantly giving her "stinkface" that the other queens tend to ignore what she has to say.
  • Lady Looks Like a Dude: Was called out as such by Michelle Visage during the nude-illusion runway for not using any breasts, but averted by the rest of the judges, who pointed out she looked like a high fashion model, who are known for being quite slender with typically very small breasts).
  • Named After Somebody Famous: Took the name Violet after Jennifer Tilly's character from Bound (1996).
  • Non-Answer: In response to Trixie on whether she was a dancer, she replies "I’m not not a dancer, but I’m not a dancer" ... Trixie immediately calls Violet out for dodging the question.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Has made an honest effort to not be such a bitch, going as far as to explain outright when she is trying to give a compliment so people don't think she's reading them. When Mrs. Kasha Davis comes back for the "Conjoined Twins" challenge, she says she can see a huge change in Violet's demeanor.
  • Yiddish as a Second Language: Chachki comes from the yiddish word for a knicknack or bauble.
  • Young and in Charge: Won season seven, despite being only 22 years old (the third youngest winner in Drag Race history, after 21-year-olds Tyra Sanchez and Aquaria, from seasons two and ten, respectively).
