The Racers

    Tag
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screenshot_2018_6_6_rimba_racer_tag_2.png
Casual

Voiced by: Steven Tan Tuan Kiong

  • 10-Minute Retirement: Tag quits the RGP after The Ripper got wrecked and Sonny was put into a coma in "Versus". He later rejoins in "Rock & A Hard Place" after Tamira, who by the time has revealed herself to be The Mole working against King, called him as he was crucial to her plan.
  • Animal Motifs: His Ripper's "Pounce" ability is probably based on a tiger's ability to pounce.
  • Badass Adorable: Tag is a tiger with an exceptionally adorable and attractive appearance. Although he doesn't fare well in a physical confrontation, he's a natural-born racer who is quick on his feet and uses unconventional but highly effective strategies on several occasions.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Justified that he's a tiger, and there are several scenes showing them off.
  • Flying Car: The Ripper initially is only capable of briefly "jumping" off the track using the jet engine on the undercarriage, but when rebuilt maneuvering jets are added that allow several seconds of near-flight.
  • Inexplicably Tailless: Averted. He lost his tail during a childhood accident involving homemade rocket car.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: 'Tag' is actually an abbreviation of Taggart.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Axle's Blue. He is friendly, carefree, and is often unafraid of speaking his mind, whereas Axle is cold, disciplined and prefers to be a man of few words. This is also reflected in the colors of their racing suits, with Tag's orange and black contrasting Axle's blue and white.
  • Parental Abandonment: His father supposedly died in a tragic accident during a race and his mother later passed away, which led to Miles becoming his guardian. Later on, not only did he learn his dad was alive all along, he was also working with Tamira to fight against the Ringmasters.

    Sonny

Voiced by: Choong-Chi Ren

  • Author Avatar: Word of God states Sonny's looks and personality was based on the show's scriptwriter, Choong-Chi-Ren, who's also his voice actor.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Shown prominently at the end of "Lines in the Sand". Sonny, who's the most affected by the revelation of Meika being a Ringmaster spy, didn't pull any punches when calling her out on her deception. This goes to show how intimidating this jovial, friendly bear can be when upset.
  • Big Fun: One of the most easygoing racers in the RGP who is also an avid gamer in his spare time.
  • The Big Guy: The physically largest of the good guys.
  • Nice Guy
  • Punny Name: Sonny is a sun bear.
    Meika

Voiced by: Assila Liyana Ahmad Badri

  • Anti-Villain: Meika is neither proud nor happy about her role as an agent for the Ringmaster, but there is little she can do to defy her bosses.
  • Becoming the Mask: While working for the Ringmasters, she grew close to Sonny and her bubbly facade.
  • Conflicting Loyalty: Her new orders in season 2 has her questioning whether she owes more loyalty to the Ringmasters or her new friends that she's supposed to be spying on.
  • Cunning Like a Fox: She's not above using dirty tricks on the track even besides her true loyalty.
  • EMP: The Belladonna's "Flying Kisses" are a pair of EMP missiles.
  • Meaningful Appearance: She has a mole on her face, which doubles as a Visual Pun owing to her status as a double agent.
  • The Mole: She is revealed to be a spy for the Ringmasters in the two-parter finale of Season 1. Initially, she was ordered to passively observe Tag and others up until the Ringmasters' identities was about to be revealed, and she erased the data before it could be read. In Season 2, her bosses want her to take a more active role.
  • Pink Is Feminine
  • Walking Spoiler: It's difficult to talk about Meika without revealing that she is secretly working for the Ringmasters.
    Meelo

Voiced by: Tikriti Shabudin

  • Amazon Chaser: In season 2, he harbors a crush on Vyxx starting from "Right on Time" onward, but he Cannot Spit It Out as evidenced by his clumsy attempt to strike up a conversation with her while waiting for the elevator. He later appeared to have stopped going after her off-screen.
  • Badass Bookworm: He wouldn't be in the RGP in the first place if he wasn't one. Not only does he race well and is knowledgeable in various things such as computers and cars, he holds his own decently in a fight as demonstrated in "Mostly True Confessions" in a rematch against Krom, using graceful dodges and tactical strikes to counter the crocodile's brutish, uncoordinated ones. He wasn't above pressing a button on the zipper of his modified jacket to non-lethally electrocute him when he was held in the air with one arm.
  • Bully Hunter: Meelo's of the opinion that "you don't run from bullies", as demonstrated when Tag and Miles interrupt his fight with Krom and he actively seeks out a rematch, wearing an electrified jacket.
  • Grappling-Hook Pistol: Car-mounted version, they're also electrified for combat.
  • Insufferable Genius: Both one of the best mechanics and racers in the entire competition and he knows it. As such, no one is in much of a hurry to massage his all ready swollen ego with compliments unless they really have to.
  • Must Have Caffeine: At the beginning of "Playing with Fire", he drinks ten cans of the energy drink that Tag promoted and claims they didn't do a thing, while visibly trembling, mind you.

    Tamira

Voiced by: Sherilyn Pang Li Ching

  • Animal Motifs: The Lunar Shadow takes its' stealthy "prowl" from her species.
  • Boring, but Practical: The Lunar Shadow's Shadow Drift mode doesn't boost its speed, armors its chases, or launch any sort of weapon, but instead improves its maneuverability on top of creating a vapor trail behind it to hamper the visibility of her pursuers. And while the smoke can only be deployed once, like the Heavy Metal's Side-Swipe and the Atlas' Stampede, the transformation can be maintained for the rest of the race which is a godsend on the more treacherously twisted tracks.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Starts off standoffish and aloof from the others, but slowly starts to tolerate them.
  • The Mole: A good one, seemingly joins King's conspiracy halfway through the first season, only to steal his data once she has the chance and clue Tag in on her work to bring King down.
  • The Sixth Ranger: Once she blows her cover and joins with the other protagonists.
  • Spy Catsuit: She wears one in "Finish Line", along with Miles, when they infiltrate the RGP's headquarters in order to steal a blackbox with incriminating evidence against King. Tamira offhand mentions the suit makes its wearer invisible to electronic surveillance, but not to security guards. It makes one wonder why they don't wear masks that cover their faces as well, especially since they come dangerously close to being caught.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She's none too fond of clowns. So much so that she wins the circus tent race of episode 23 in her mad and desperate dash to escape the track's giant android harlequin obstacle.
    Krom

Voiced by: Azman Zulkiply

  • Animal Motifs: The Heavy Metal is, if anything, even greener with more armor plating than its' driver.
  • Crocodile Tears: Rather figuratively. After knocking Sonny off the race track which subsequently put him in a coma in "Versus", Krom appears in the next episode pretending to be remorseful and lied to the press over not being able to prevent it from happening.
  • Dumb Muscle: Krom isn't particularly bright in spite of his well-built physique.
  • Mighty Glacier: His vehicle is less a racecar and more a hulk of spikes and armor plate on wheels.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: Played straight, in contrast to Meelo. Unless you're Wrecks pre-Heel Realization, he isn't the sort of person most people would gladly hang out with, on-and-off the tracks.
  • Those Two Guys: With Wrecks in season 1.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: He manages to place first in the Lightning Plains race because his car just happens to be heavily armored and insulated enough to shrug off the course's thunderbolt gimmick. Unfortunately, Krom got electrocuted (again) touching the front of his car while gloating about his win at the other racers, not realizing it was still electrified.
    Wrecks

Voiced by: Kevin Adrian Barnaby

  • Animal Motifs: The Atlas has a steel rhino horn on the end.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: In "Versus", he questions King's order to ram Sonny off-road when his team already have the upper hands in the race, only carrying it out when it's clear he had no say on the matter.
  • Heel Realization: In the season 1 finale, his friendship with Krom has become strained as Wrecks decided he had enough King's hit-racer, to the point he eliminates himself and Krom during the race.
  • Hidden Depths: One of the trivias states despite his seemingly intimidating stature, Wrecks has a keen interest in baking. He hopes to master the chocolate souffle and dreams of opening a pastry shop one day. His brief Where Are They Now appearance in Season 2 reveals that he's done precisely that.
  • Put on a Bus: He is dropped from season 2 roster along with Cuckoo and Ooaa to make room for the three new racers.
  • Ramming Always Works: His Atlas is designed to ram other cars with a horn that glows red-hot.
  • Those Two Guys: With Krom until his Heel Realization
    Cuckoo

Voiced by: Azman Zulkiply

  • Animal Motifs: The Ruby Star is basically an egg on wheels.
  • Butt-Monkey: Aside from finishing a race spectacularly once in a blue moon as shown during the Good-Times Montage at the start of "It's Just Business", Cuckoo usually panics and eliminates himself, sometimes with other racers in the process, early in a race or finishes one at last place. He also sit out of one in "Versus" along with Ooaa as Bandage Mummy. Needless to say, his neurotic personality means he doesn't get very far in his current career.
  • EMP: His "Supernova" ability shorts out every other vehicle in the area, unfortunately half the time he sets it off by accident.
  • Nervous Wreck: In "Welcome to the Big Time", the first thing he does when Mrs. Dira and her camera crew approached him for an interview is to grabs her and beg for help. In addition, the dangerous, often unpredictable nature of racing doesn't help him maintain his composure well either.
  • Put on a Bus: Didn't return for season 2.
  • Taking You with Me: Has a habit of panicking when it's clear he's about to crash and activating his car's "supernova" in response. This never saves him, but it causes the cars of his opponents to short circuit which either causes them to stall or get knocked out with him if they're all on a particularly perilous part of the track.
    Ooaa

Voiced by: None

  • Banana Peel: His car fires rockets shaped like bananas that become road hazards.
  • Maniac Monkeys: Doesn't speak, instead he hoots and screeches incomprehensibly before attacking people who try to ask him questions.
  • Put on a Bus: Didn't return for season 2.
  • Spanner in the Works: He's not part of Tag or King's teams but still manages to take out most of the remaining racers in the final race of season 1, Leading to Cuckoo of all people winning.
  • The Unintelligible
    Pike
Voiced by: Fadhil Luqman

  • The Heavy: The chief antagonist of Season 2, acting as a powerful rival to both Tag and Axle while also supplanting King and Meika as the head of the Ringmasters' operations during the Rimba Grand Prix.
  • King Incognito: He's the head boss of several criminal syndicates who the Ringmasters somehow managed to get under their collective thumb.
  • Savage Wolves: He is a wolf and pretty evil. His Triple Threat ability alludes to this further by basically making a pack.
  • Schmuck Bait: His Triple Threat ability launches two drones that create holographic copies of his Cerberus and then detonates a flash bang that gives him time to "shuffle" himself with his clones. If a fellow racer tries to make contact with one of the clones (a seemingly harmless tactic as they are just holograms), the attached drone will latch onto the offending vehicle and electrocute their vehicle into stalling.
    Vyxx
Voiced by: Yvonne Chong Shin Vun

  • Evil Debt Collector: Her other job in organized crime, and it's implied she breaks more than legs.
  • Heinous Hyena: Is a spotted hyena and evil, though a formidable badass instead of the cowardly portrayal.
  • Hell-Bent for Leather: Vyxx wears a brown, cropped leather jacket with long sleeves which covers her hands as part of her casual outfit, while her racing suit wouldn't look out of place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland setting.
  • Statuesque Stunner: Standing at 6'2, she is one of the tallest racers who's ever been part of the RGP and she's pretty easy on the eyes. A case of Truth in Television, as female hyenas are usually larger than males in real life.
    Xeno
Voiced by: None

  • Expy: Episode 17 frames him as a villainous version of Mr. Toad from The Wind in the Willows with Smythe acting as his Mr. Badger.
  • Nano Machines: His car's special releases a cloud of small insect-bots that act like utility fog, assembling into things like bridges or additional armor.
  • Nerd Glasses: Sported a much less fashionable pair of spectacles during his youth. Back when he was just a freelance saboteur working for the Ringmasters.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: While also being the Evil Counterpart to Meelo, Xeno serves as a combination of two of the replaced racers, Cuckoo and OoAa, being The Unintelligible and driving a car that's basically a bubble on wheels.
  • The Unintelligible: He speaks gibberish, but his companions understands him just fine.

Others

    Miles

Voiced by: Iain Mcnally

  • Cool Old Guy
  • Parental Substitute: To Tag, he promised Riq he'd take care of him.
  • Punny Name: An owl named Miles in a cartoon about racing. Nothing unusual here.
  • Shipper on Deck: He is either this, or he simply loves to teases Tag regarding his Belligerent Sexual Tension with Tamira. When Tag was busy talking on the phone with Tamira in "Rock & A Hard Place", Miles makes a heart in the air with his fingers to his friends (and the audience), completed with appropriate body language, visual and sound effects.
    Mr. King

Voiced by: Kevin Adrian Barnaby

  • Affably Evil: King is polite, softspoken, and rarely loses his cool, even when things don't proceed as planned.
  • Angry, Angry Hippos: Is a hippopotamus and although he appears cuddly he is at best an evil bastard.
  • Authority in Name Only: Despite his position as the organizer of the RGP, there are higher-ups to whom he answers to on the phone. They turn out to be the Ringmasters in the finale of season one. As punishment for his failures, they force him to be more answerable to one of their reliable agents: Meika.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He fixes races for the sponsors and has no qualms concerning racers who refused to "play along".
  • Elvis Impersonator: His racing overalls were styled to resemble Elvis' white comeback jumpsuit from the 1960s.
  • Fat Bastard: He's rotten to the core, and is a hippo to boot.
  • Ironic Name: King is actually a pawn for the Ringmasters.
  • I Was Quite the Looker: King's mustache-and-goatee combo during the flashback to his racing days in "A Lesson in History" was way more impressive than the thin mustache he got now.
  • Light Is Not Good: Wears white, normally stands in environments lit by white light, and is a hippo playing on the species' good reputation. Is actually the main enforcer of an Ancient Conspiracy.
  • Purple Is Powerful: His vehicle during his racing days was a large purple and gold version of Elvis Presley's 1955 Cadillac Fleetwood. As the head of the Rimba Grand Prix, he wears a purple vest as part of his three-piece suit.
  • Start of Darkness: Helping the Ringmasters sabotage Riq's car after he refused to join the conspiracy.
  • Villain in a White Suit: Wears prominently a white suit, which draws attention to his corruption. He is also a Villain with Good Publicity.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: With the exception of Tag and a number of people, the general public believes him to be an upstanding businessman who runs a legitimate racing league. In "It's Good To Be The King", when he shows the press an incredibly obvious edited footage of Sonny suddenly veering off course and slamming into the tree that knocked him into a coma, instead of being forced off the road by Krom, they believed it without a shred of doubt.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Riq's chief rival during their racing days, the two of them shared a friendly, competitive relationship until the "accident" that changed their lives forever.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: He allied with the Ringmasters and started the Rimba Grand Prix to save his beloved sport from nosediving popularity and possibly extinction, hoping to lure in sponsors with more "reliable" outcomes in the previously unpredictable races and to charm new fans into taking interest with the better tracks and bigger events the additional money would fund.
    Torres

Voiced by: Nadia Mahmud

  • Ice Queen
  • Red Herring: Given her nature as The Stoic and how closely she works with Mr. King, one can be forgiven for thinking she would be the agent the Ringmasters forced King to answer to as opposed to Meika.
  • Sexy Secretary: In-universe her bio mentions that she has attracted her share of admirers, but they're too afraid of her to say anything.

    Becks and Beaks

(Becks) Voiced by: Tikriti Shabudin
(Beaks) Voiced by: Azman Zulkiply
    Mrs. Dira

Voiced by: Chan Su Ling
    Riq
Voiced by: Azman Zulkiply

  • A Day in the Limelight: "A Lesson in History" shed light on the circumstances that led to the accident at Pinewood Reservoir, as well as a glimpse of how King and the Ringmasters came to be in the present day.
  • Broken Faceplate: A non-fatal version. As Riq's uncontrollable vehicle crashed into a structure during the race at Pinewood, a piece of debris struck his helmet's faceplate, shattering it which also cuts up his face.
  • Catapult Nightmare: He wakes up from one at the beginning of "A Lesson in History".
  • Disappeared Dad: He supposedly drowned after he lost control of his car and veered off into the lake at Pinewood Reservoir, much to the horrors of a young Tag who was watching the race on television. However, it was noted they Never Found the Body. He turns out to be alive and well in season 1 finale who is also Tamira's partner.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: At the present, he has three scars on the upper right half of his face and a fourth one running down his lips.
    Spoiler

Voiced by: Tikriti Shabudin

  • An Offer You Can't Refuse: Smythe offered to install Riq as the head boss of the Rimba Grand Prix, but after he refused, the badger arranged it so that one way or another, Riq would be unable to tell anyone about the Ringmasters' plans to fix the competition in their favour.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Invoked with their electronically-scrambled voices.
