The Reverend Adam Smallbone (Tom Hollander)

• Accidental Hero: In the series 2 opener he is mistaken for a Badass Preacher when he accidentally takes down a bag-snatcher.
• Always Someone Better: He suffers from this a lot, but always realises that he matters in his own way, or to the people that matter.
• Good Shepherd: He tries is best to be this.
• Mr. Vice Guy: Smokes, drinks, and masturbates on his day off.
• The Stoner: Briefly in a series 2 episode where he unwittingly gets high.
• The Vicar: Although he is one, the extent to which he fits this trope is debatable as his actions are not usually played for laughs.

Alex Smallbone (Olivia Colman)

• Casual Kink: In a case of still waters running deep, she has a long list of fantasies, and indulges in a roleplay with Adam where she picks him up in a supermarket wearing sexy tights, a short skirt and no knickers. Additionally, she had foreplay with an old college friend whilst on a bus.
• Crusading Lawyer: It is implied she is one of these.

• Deadpan Snarker: He's pretty acerbic about some of the parishioners, and especially their children.
• Girlfriend in Canada: Claims to have one of these after he and Adam find out that Archdeacon Robert is gay. Adam doesn't believe him for a minute, and eventually calls him out on this. He's later seen browsing a gay dating website.
• No Social Skills
• The Starscream: Is convinced that he would be a better vicar than Adam.

Archdeacon Robert (Simon McBurney)

• Ambiguously Gay: He seems very camp. It later transpires he is in a loving relationship with another man.

• Running Gag: To Adam: "I'm going to let you off... here."
