Martin III

Grandson of Matthias, son of Mattimeo and Tess Churchmouse. He is not the second Martin the Warrior, seeing as the one he was named after was already a Dead Guy Junior.

  • The Berserker: Unlike his more composed grandfather, Martin flies into a red-eyed rage when fighting. That being said, he can maintain his cool, a shown by his duel with Ublaz.
  • The Champion: Inherits the position and sword from his father.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He punches Ublaz in the eye during their climatic sword duel.
  • Cool Sword: The latest wielder of the Sword of Martin the Warrior.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Exaggerated. He was named after Martin the Warrior, who was in turn named after his grandfather.
  • Identical Grandson: According to the visions of Tansy and Wallyum, he looks nigh on identical to the original Martin, though they're not actually related, the Martin of legend dying childless.
  • Master Swordsman: Like most members of his family, inheriting the sword and the mastery of it from his father and grandfather.
  • Vague Age: It's unclear if he's even young or old.

Grath Longfletch

The last surviving member of Holt Lutra, whose family was slaughtered by Captain Conva on Ublaz's orders.

  • Action Girl: Oh boy. She's one of the deuteragonists of the novel and plays a major part in Martin III's party to save the abbot.
  • Bottomless Magazines: We never see her run out of arrows, even though the book specifically mentions she fletched them from a very uniquely colored bird that washed up onto the beach.
  • Cold Sniper: An archer version. She's very single-minded and not much for smiles.
  • Deuteragonist: Shares the spotlight of the novel with Tansy and Martin.
  • Doomed Hometown: Her entire tribe was killed in the theft of the Pearls.
  • Good Old Ways: Grath is familiar with old otter greeting traditions. It's what impresses Holt Rudderwake's leader when Martin III's party has to make a stopover.
  • I Choose to Stay: Once Ublaz is dead, she decides to stay at Holt Ruddawake with Inbar.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: A ridiculously good shot.
  • Revenge: Her main purpose is to hunt down Ublaz for the murder of her family.
  • Suddenly Fluent in Gibberish: She can speak seal, at least a bit, which comes in handy when the ship stops on an iceberg. She doesn't get it perfect though.
  • Super Swimming Skills: She's a pretty good swimmer and saves Viola when she falls into the water.

Tansy

  • Deuteragonist: The star of the storyline back at the Abbey while Martin and Grath journey off to Sampetra.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: She becomes the Abbess and is a Supporting Leader in The Long Patrol. She also decides the fate of the Tears; knowing just how many have died for the pearls, she throws them into the sea, where they’ll never cause harm to anyone ever again.

Emperor Ublaz “Mad Eyes”

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ublaz_2068.jpg

A former corsair who found the island of Sampetra before any others could, Ublaz the pine marten used his skill as a hypnotist to bring the local monitor lizards under his sway, setting himself up as Sampetra's emperor. With an army of trident rats and monitors to back him up, Ublaz controls Sampetra's supply of timber, and with this leverage, makes himself master of the corsairs who sail the southern oceans. Defined by his need to look the part of a monarch, Ublaz is willing to authorize the massacre of an entire otter tribe in order to obtain the Tears of All Oceans for his crown.

  • Agent Peacock: He's effeminate and flamboyant, but a Master Swordsman who earned his title of The Emperor of Sampetra. He’s one of the few antagonists in the series that goes down swinging.
  • Authority Equals Asskicking: Before finding Sampetra, he was a skilled swordsbeast, and actually manages to hold his own against Martin III.
  • Bad Boss: The vast majority of his problems are because he sucks as Emperor. He executes Conva and gleefully shows it off to Conva's own brother, tries to betray and murder Rasconza for no reason other than pride and threatens his right hand henchwoman so badly she and her entire corps switch sides. Even for a Redwall villain, Ublaz is awful at leadership.
  • Big Bad: Of The Pearls of Lutra.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Ublaz's signature eyes are jet black, hypnotic, and earned him the nickname of "Mad Eyes."
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Ublaz tends to be fully incapable of holding to his word, even when it might behoove him. He betrays the captains of Sampetra, turning them against him, and when Rasconza arranges their deaths to ally with Ublaz, Ublaz promptly backstabs him as well, despite having no sane reason for it whatsoever.
  • Creepy Crossdresser: Probably not intentionally, but he wears silk robes, perfume, and claw paint. Also, the pearls he is so obsessed with are pink.
  • Didn't Think This Through: His Bad Boss tendencies aside, it never occurred to Ublaz that while his Monitor Lizards are the fiercest warriors on his island, they're not built to handle the rigor and cold of ocean travel. Half of Lask's forces are dead by the time they make land.
  • The Emperor: Ulbaz declared himself Emperor of Sampetra by virtue of having found it first and his hypnotic eyes. However, his authority is actually much thinner than he realizes, leading to rebellion.
  • Evil Versus Evil: He has to put down multiple rebellions by his corsair and Trident Rat underlings, none of whom are any more moral than he is.
  • Expy: An increasingly deranged pirate emperor based on an island at the edge of the known map who destroys his own position due to encroaching madness and a refusal to deal reasonably with his subordinates? He's Mariel of Redwall's Gabool the Wild with slightly more sanity and a veneer of culture plastered on — both Gabool and Ublaz even both die when their venomous "pets" (a scorpion and a coral snake, respectively) turn on them.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He often acts polite and friendly to those he talks to, but it's easy to tell that it's all an act to hide his ruthlessness and treachery.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He is killed by his own pet coral snake.
  • Hypnotic Eyes: Thus his nickname. Martin III punches him in the eye to keep him from using hypnosis on him.
  • It's All About Me: Ublaz is prepared to slaughter scores of beings just to have a specific set of pearls for his crown.
  • King of Thieves: His claim to be Emperor of Sampetra is based entirely on his status as ruler of the South Sea Corsairs.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Ublaz likes to play people under him, manipulating the corsair crews via the usage of timber, and attempting to sway Rasconza with a truce that he promptly violates with a sabotaged ship.
  • Master Swordsman: Before becoming emperor, Ublaz was one of the most feared fighters in all the southern seas. He's able to duel Martin III in a fair fight.
  • Narcissist: Ublaz is obsessed with his own image.
  • Not a Morning Person: It’s not very often that we have a scene with a Redwall villain first thing in the morning, but we do with Ublaz, where he acts like someone who’s still sleepy, groggy and really in need of a cup of coffee.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: Ublaz spends most of the book trapped in his palace, under siege by Rasconza, but when confronted by Martin III, proves that he, like Cluny and Tsarmina (and unlike most of the series' villains) is not going down without a fight.
  • Sissy Villain: He dolls himself up with claw paint and silk robes, and his entire plot revolves around his desire for a set of pink pearls for his crown. He's also evil to the core.
  • Smug Snake: Full of himself to the point where it becomes handicapping.
  • Wicked Cultured: Sees himself as very cultured, though much of it is an act.

Lask Frildur

The Monitor-General, Lask Frildur is the largest and most brutal of Sampetra's monitor lizards and serves as Emperor Ublaz's right-hand reptile. Sent to Mossflower to recover the Tears of All Oceans, Lask kidnaps Abbot Durral in order to ransom him for the pearls. A savage to the core, Lask detests the more honourable Captain Romsca of the Waveworm, leading to a violent clash between the two.

  • Cannibal Tribe: The monitors are the flesh-devouring natives of Sampetra who were enslaved by Ublaz. Lask is their chief, and acts as intermediary between they and Ublaz.
  • The Dragon: About as literal as you can get in this setting.
  • The Dreaded: Widely feared on Sampetra, Lask's fearsome reputation is what keeps the Wave Brethren in line, preventing revolt against Ublaz.
  • Evil Is Visceral: He has foul breath and he drools; he's described as more disgusting than other reptiles.
  • Evil Versus Evil: He and Romsca eventually have a falling out that leads to both their deaths.
  • Four-Star Badass: Lask's title is Monitor-General, and during his offscreen battle against Romsca he proves that he and a few of his lizards are a match for an entire crew of corsairs.
  • Hero Killer: Lask lives up to his image as The Dreaded, slaughtering Romsca's entire crew with only his five surviving monitors in back of him.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: While entirely loyal to Ublaz, he's far more dangerous, which is why the Brethren wait until he's off the island to launch their revolt.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Implied, since we never see the Monitors actually eat anybeast, although Conva was certainly terrified of them.
  • Large and in Charge: The largest monitor on the island.
  • Mutual Kill: With Romsca. Her crew and his monitors do the same.
  • Natural Weapon: Lask and his monitors are armed only with their fangs and claws. It's enough to fight an entire pirate ship to a mutual kill.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: As is standard for reptiles in this series.
  • Smug Snake: Though less so than his boss.
  • Sssssnake Talk: or rather, Lizzzzzzard Talk

Zurgat

A big female monitor, Zurgat is Lask Frildur's deputy, and takes over as interim Monitor-General in his absence. Entirely loyal to Ublaz, she commands the defense of Sampetra against the Wave Brethren, the rebelling Trident Rats, and Martin III and Grath's forces.

  • Cannibal Tribe: The monitors are the cannibalistic natives of Sampetra who were enslaved by Ublaz.
  • Dark Action Girl: Given that she's a huge, flesh-eating lizard this isn't surprising.
  • Four-Star Badass: Like Lask before her, she's a capable fighter who leads from the front.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: "Follow me, we will zzzlay -" is as far as she gets before two arrows hit her dead center.
  • Pyromaniac: She's very eager to use the fire-bales (or, as she might call them, "fire-balezzz") against the invaders.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: As with Lask.
  • Sssssnake Talk: Like all the monitors, she turns "s" into "z" and elongates the sound.

Sagitar Sawfang

The leader of Ublaz's Trident Rats, Sagitar Sawfang is the Emperor's left-hand, responsible for guarding the Emperor, maintaining order on the island, and taking care of all the other jobs that the monitors cannot be wasted on. She eventually betrays Ublaz to Rasconza, which turns out to be a fatal error.

Romsca

A corsair ferret who was Conva's first mate, Romsca became captain of the Waveworm after his death. Resentful of Ublaz for his role in her captain's suicide, Romsca nevertheless obeys her orders, and conveys Lask Frildur to Mossflower, where the lizard kidnaps Abbot Durral. Becoming attached to the elderly mouse, Romsca has a violent falling out with the Monitor-General, resulting in the deaths of almost everyone aboard the Waveworm.

  • Anti-Hero: One of the few "vermin" that shows their good side. Has become a big Ensemble Dark Horse as a result.
  • Badass Boast: She gets a whole Villain Song about how great being a corsair is.
  • The Captain: Of the Waveworm.
  • Dark Action Girl: She's a pirate captain, with all that entails.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She says she had one, but downplays it, saying that she chose to be a corsair and is not sorry.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: When the Abbot first addresses her as "my child", she gruffly replies that "I ain't your child". Later, when she's dying after having saved the Abbot, he calls her his child again and she says how much she likes that.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: She dies in the Abbot's arms, and he comforts her as she passes.
  • Evil Versus Evil: Not too fond of Ublaz's monitor troops. They end up fighting for control of the ship.
  • Freudian Excuse Denial: She tells the Abbot that she freely chose to be a pirate because she likes it, and that while she had a dark past, she will not use it as an excuse for her life choices.
  • Frisky Ferret: A troublemaking ferret corsair who eventually makes good.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She's more of an Anti-Hero from the start, but turns on Ublaz just before her death, asking Durral to bless her before she dies.
  • A Lighter Shade of Black: Is this compared to Ublaz and his monitor lizards. She's still a pirate captain, and as such no ally of Redwall, but unlike Ublaz she has a code of honor that keeps her from being completely irredeemable.
  • Mutual Kill: With Lask Frildur. Romsca manages to put the big lizard down, but dies shortly afterwards from the wounds his teeth and claws inflicted on her. The rest of her crew and Lask's monitors also die at one another's hands, leaving the ship crewed by Abbot Durral alone.
  • Noble Demon: She loves being a corsair and says she's not ashamed about it, but she has lines she wouldn't cross and would clearly prefer not to work with Ublaz. She's very protective and friendly towards her prisoners, particularly the Abbot, and gives her life to save him.
  • Redemption Equals Death: Turns on Lask Frildur and by extension Ublaz, taking hideous mortal wounds and dying peacefully in the Abbot's arms.

Rasconza

A corsair fox who leads the Wave Brethren after killing their original leader, Barranca. Consistently getting the better of Ublaz, Rasconza begins to believe he can easily overthrow the Emperor, a mistake he eventually lives to regret.

  • Cunning Like a Fox: The cleverest of the corsair rebels, he eliminates the captains and takes command of the revolt against Ublaz.
  • Evil Versus Evil: With Ublaz. They're both bad people and they're at war to control the island.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: By Sagitar's trident after mortally wounding her with a throwing knife.
  • La Résistance: Leads the Wave Brethren against the tyranny of Ublaz.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Manipulates the Wave Brethren and then Sagitar into aiding him against Ublaz.
  • Mutual Kill: With Sagitar. He puts a knife in her throat, but is then stabbed with her trident when he leans in to hear her last words.
  • The Starscream: To the captains of the Wave Brethren and Ublaz.

Cleckstarr Lepus “Clecky” Montisle

  • An Arm and a Leg: Downplayed - he loses part of his ear in the final battle, but doesn't pay it much mind. He gets a velvet "prosthetic" of sorts in the epilogue.
  • Badass Boast: He delivers a rather hammy one in the final battle:
Clecky: Fall back, the foebeast! Cleckstarr Lepus Montisle to the fray! A Montisle is I, 'tis death to stand before me! Particularly in line for dinner, wot! Forward the whites!
  • Big Eater: Like all hares, he has an appetite about the size of the Abbey.
  • Exact Words: Tansy told him not to put a paw near a bowl of cream. He sneaks some by grabbing it with his ear.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Downplayed - hardly anyone but Gerul has much patience for his habit of swiping food, but they don't dislike him otherwise.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: He might be a trickster and food-pincher in times of peace, but when vermin start causing trouble, he proves a worthy successor to Basil Stag Hare.
  • Those Two Guys: He and Gerul were traveling companions before meeting up with the Redwallers.

Gerul

  • Beware the Silly Ones: He's a bit of a goof with his habit for quoting his mother's favorite pearls of wisdom, but when the seagulls attack Redwall Abbey, he charges right into their midst and kills one of them.
  • Genius Ditz: Solves several of Fermald's riddles with ease.
  • The Owl-Knowing One: Subverted, although he has surprising good sense.

Baby Arven

Fermald the Ancient

Graylunk

Craklyn & Piknim

  • And That's Terrible: Piknim's death is a grievous thing indeed, as Brian Jacques reiterates several times in the narrative. So grievous, in fact, it led to St. Ninian's Church being burned down by Rollo, and the Tears of All Oceans thrown to the sea by Tansy, both attracting nothing but evil and death over the years.
  • Kill the Cutie: Poor Piknim...
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Piknim is killed by jackdaws trying to recover one of the Tears of All Oceans.
  • Those Two Girls: They're best friends, playmates, and almost always together.

Rollo

  • Grumpy Old Man: Kind of a stereotypical crotchety librarian.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's impatient at times, which leads to him being very grumpy or rude. But he's still friendly for the most part, and he becomes even nicer following Piknim's death.
  • Salt the Earth: After Piknim is killed by jackdaws inhabiting the ruins of St. Ninian's Church, Rollo orders the ruins utterly destroyed to stop it from ever becoming a nest of evil again, as it has several times in Redwall's history.
