- Anti-Hero: Jacob is a questionably sympathetic professional treasure hunter satisfied with his grand total of one friend...and gets dragged into the middle of a war because he just wants his brother back.
- Back from the Dead: In "Reckless", Jacob is shot in the chest, actually dies, and is brought back to life by Miranda two pages later.
- Badass in Distress: Is captured by Spieler in The Silver Tracks. Although he and Nerron escape, thanks to Nerron he eventually ends up a prisoner of the Goyl as well.
- Childhood Friend Romance: With Fox.
- Cold-Blooded Torture: Is brutally tortured during his time as Spieler's prisoner.
- It Doesn't Mean Anything: Jacob more or less says this to Clara. She doesn't quite believe him. Neither does Fox. Come to think of it, he has his own doubts on the matter...
- Mayfly–December Romance: Jacob, who is twenty-four, and Miranda, an immortal fairy.
- The Rival: He and Nerron are this to each other.

- Animorphism: Can shapeshift into a vixen, thanks to a fox fur coat she received from a vixen as a thank you gift for saving them from her step-brothers.
- Determinator: Is determined to find Jacob after they are separated in The Silver Tracks.
- Green-Eyed Epiphany: Fox prefers her human skin to her fox fur only after she sees Jacob kissing Clara. "She wanted skin, and lips, so he could kiss them as he had kissed Clara's lips." Proof of her jealousy in that she imagines Clara meeting a variety of terrible fates.
- Imperiled in Pregnancy: Is seriously injured by Spieler in The Silver Tracks, while pregnant with Jacob's child. Luckily both she and the child survive the attack.
- I Will Find You: Vows to find and reunite with Jacob after being separated from him in The Silver Tracks.
