Protagonists

    HERO
The protagonist of the original Quest Fantasy. He is sent by the King to kill an Ogre.
  • Demonic Possession: By S O U L, who has him kill kawaii desu girl.
  • The Hero: As his name suggests, he is the hero sent to kill the Ogre. Subverted, however, in that he winds up being an Unwitting Pawn who kills an innocent being- Morshu becomes the closest thing to a series hero in the long run.
  • Killed Off for Real: He is Driven to Suicide by S O U L.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: By killing the Ogre, HERO indirectly released S O U L, who destroyed Town. A high amount of the second half of the original game is about making the player/HERO feel bad. It gets even worse when you see just the extent of S O U L's actions.
  • Psychic-Assisted Suicide: S O U L controls him into banging his head on the wall until he dies of blood loss.
  • Unwitting Pawn: The King used him to kill an innocent Ogre and release the last of the seals on S O U L.

    kawaii desu girl/GIRL
The protagonist of Final Dragon. She is sent by the Divine Oracle to kill the Final Dragon.

    Cain
The protagonist of Mystic Infinity. He is a dragon-slayer sent by the King to kill the dragons plaguing the land.
  • Aesop Amnesia: Invoked. Cain learns nothing from his adventure and is just as much of a Jerkass at the end of the game as he was at the beginning.
  • Jerkass: He frequently mocks the other villagers for being poorer than him and is self-centered.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: One of the town NPCs in Mystic Infinity calls Cain out for breaking into their houses all the time. Cain himself also lampshades this repeatedly.
Cain: yknow his life savings are probly in there
Cain: but there's nothing i like more than CASH MONEY
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Cain drove the dragons to near-extinction in the first place, which released S O U L from the Dragon Blade.
  • Rich Bastard: He revels in his wealth and disregards the other villagers for being commoners.
  • Selective Obliviousness: Cain is entirely convinced that his wife left to get groceries six years ago and took their daughter with her.

    John/Jane
The protagonist of Love Plus Shoujo Edition. Their gender is chosen at the beginning. They go to the mansion in order to find a lover.

    Guy
See Old Guy The King.

    Oswald
The protagonist of Xenospire. He explores a cave to find the titular treasure.
  • And Then John Was a Zombie: Parodied in the Gainax Ending, where he suddenly turns out to have been a zombie all along. In truth, he likely hallucinated from being stuck in the cave for so long.
  • Only Sane Man: He is the only protagonist besides Morshu who displays common sense.
  • Sole Survivor: Word of God is that he, along with Pimpalicious, eventually exit the cave and find themselves the last survivors of civilization.

    Morshu
The merchant of Town and the protagonist of Era Ovation Acceptance. After getting self-awareness, he sets out to find his family.
  • Ascended Extra: In the first few games, he was merely a merchant and reference to the The Legend of Zelda CD-i Games. He then becomes the protagonist of the final game of the series.
  • Flat "What": Morshu's response to the Flareon cosplayer.
  • The Hero: He winds up being the last defense against the entities attacking the world.
  • Medium Awareness: He gains this in the last game, which sets him out on his quest.
  • Only Sane Man: Once he gains self-awareness, he acts like a normal human being would act in the face of the madness plaguing the world, being afraid but making sensible decisions and keeping a level head.

Other Major Characters

    Old Guy The King
The King of Town and the Divine Oracle. He is also the protagonist of Fate Demon. As it turns out, he is working for S O U L.
  • The Chessmaster: He and S O U L together masterminded a ridiculously complex plan to bring it into the world.
  • The Dragon: As the Divine Oracle of Truth, he is S O U L's main servant who helps it in its plan to corrupt the world.
  • Final Boss: He channels S O U L and becomes the last enemy fought in Era Ovation Acceptance, and by extension the series.
  • Go Mad from the Revelation: Him being granted awareness of being a game character drove him to join S O U L in the hopes that it would grant them a better world.
  • Lack of Empathy: Especially evident in Fate Demon- he is not fazed at all by any of the weird hallucinations trying to make him feel bad for killing the Terracotta Ogre.
  • Medium Awareness: S O U L gave him self-awareness of being a game character. This is actually said to be what triggered his Sanity Slippage.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: The king pretends to talk with Stylistic Suck like the rest of the world in order to hide his status as a Divine Oracle of Truth.
  • Sanity Slippage: It is hinted that he has been slowly going further into delusion ever since becoming the Divine Oracle of S O U L.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: Downplayed, as even as a kid he was willing to murder the Terracotta Ogre just because the authorities told him to. But one of his friends says that he used to be kinder as well, before S O U L came along.
  • Villain Protagonist: In Fate Demon. He's apathetic about killing, seeking to kill the innocent Terracotta Ogre, and grows up to become The Dragon to S O U L.

    Shittyghost
A ghost who serves as a recurring character. Actually the ghost of the Terracotta Ogre.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Sometimes he is referred to as male, but in the dating sim she is apparently a female. Although, according to Word of God, s/he is the ghost of a male character (the Terracotta Ogre).
  • Arc Villain: He is the antagonist of Fate Demon as the monster that Guy must kill. Subverted, however, in that he is not evil.
  • Bedsheet Ghost: His appearance after dying. It fails to be scary and contributes to him living up to his name.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: In life, he was a big, imposing Ogre, and in death he appears as a ghost. Despite this, he is very friendly and a little shy.
  • Palette Swap: The Terracotta Ogre is literally just a recolored Ogre and nothing more.

    Desu Girl
A girl who lives in Town.
  • And I Must Scream: In her ending in the Dating Sim, S O U L turns her into a pod and has her attack John/Jane. Her screams can be heard as the player hits her.
  • Gratuitous Japanese: Like kawaii desu girl, she peppers her speech with this. And her name is Desu Girl.

    Pimpalicious Sparkleshitz
A fairy that Oswald meets in the Xenospire cave.
  • Fairy Companion: To Oswald, following him around as he explores the cavern. She also serves as a party member.
  • Sole Survivor: Word of God is that she, along with Oswald, eventually exit the cave and find themselves the last survivors of civilization.

Antagonists

    Ogre
The antagonist of the original Quest Fantasy. He is an Ogre that HERO has been ordered to kill.

    Final Dragon
The titular antagonist of Final Dragon.
  • Antagonist Title: The second game is named after it.
  • Arc Villain: The antagonist of the second game, Final Dragon. Subverted in that it is not evil.
  • Last of Its Kind: As the name suggests, it is the final dragon in the world.

    Terracotta Ogre
The antagonist of Fate Demon. See Shittyghost for details.

    Vessel
An antagonist in Xenospire. They serve as the vessel for S O U L.
  • Ambiguous Gender: It is never stated what gender they are, and the battle sprite of them, which only shows them as a big red head having been deformed by possession, makes it hard to tell.
  • Arc Villain: The antagonist of Xenospire, though it merely serves as a vessel for S O U L.
  • Demonic Possession: Willingly lets S O U L possess them.
  • MacGuffin Guardian: They guard the Xenospire from thieves. Unfortunately, they ended up falling to S O U L's corruption.

    Gargoyle
An antagonist in Era Ovation Acceptance. He is the boss of the cave area.
  • Lone Wolf Boss: He has no relation to any of the eldritch beings or the King, he just does not want to listen to Morshu's warnings to leave.
  • Warmup Boss: He is the first boss of Era Ovation Acceptance, fought at the end of the Noob Cave.

    Forest Monster
An antagonist in Era Ovation Acceptance. It is the boss of the forest area.

    S O U L
An entity from another dimension that serves as the series antagonist. It desires to corrupt the world for amusement.
  • Ambiguous Gender: Old Guy The King alternates between male and gender-neutral pronouns when referring to it, but it also takes on a female form in Love Plus. Being an Eldritch Abomination, it is possibly neither one.
  • Big Bad: Of the series. It is the source of the corruption overwhelming the world, and every game ultimately has it as the real villain.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: In Era Ovation Acceptance, it competes with Snaily Joe and Shachihata, two rival Eldritch Abominations, for control of the world.
  • The Chessmaster: It and Old Guy The King together masterminded a ridiculously complex plan to bring it into the world.
  • Demonic Possession: It does this to several characters.
  • Eldritch Abomination: It is a giant eyeball with many tentacles and the ability to warp the world into whatever it desires.
  • Evil Versus Evil: It wants to corrupt the world, and competes with Snaily Joe, who wants to rule it, and Shachihata, who wants to devour it.
  • Expy: Of Giygas. A big, red, swirly Eldritch Abomination that corrupts the game world and seeks to control it; the first battle against S O U L even pulls a You Cannot Grasp the True Form just like Giygas. Of course, unlike the Almighty Idiot and Tragic Villain Giygas, S O U L is both more intelligent and much more willfully malevolent.
  • Final Boss: It tends to be the last enemy faced in each game, with the exceptions of Final Dragon and Fate Demon. It possesses Old Guy The King to become the final enemy of the series, as well.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: S O U L in the first game is invulnerable to all attacks. While you do 'win' it, you do so through committing suicide, and then get a Game Over anyway.
  • I Have Many Names: S O U L has a ton of different forms and iterations.
  • In Their Own Image: Its goal is to corrupt the game world to whatever it desires.
  • Karma Houdini: Due to the series having No Ending, it is unknown if it is ever punished or defeated.
  • Post-Final Boss: In the original game, it is the last enemy faced, but cannot be hurt in any way, and the battle is a long Hopeless Boss Fight. The Ogre beforehand serves as the actual Final Boss.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: It is sealed away in several places, and unsealing it requires killing the entire dragon species and an Ogre. Though even unsealed, it proves itself able to influence the world.
  • Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: The games have a pattern of being deliberately terrible and goofy, with spelling errors, meme references, and Breaking the Fourth Wall. But every time S O U L shows up, the comedy tends to stop as well and the game becomes quite creepy. Its first appearance alone, in the original game, has it destroy all of Town and kill everyone inside, then possess HERO and make him kill GIRL before killing himself.
  • You Cannot Grasp the True Form: In the first battle, S O U L will attack HERO in a manner that the dialogue box cannot comprehend, as a Shout-Out to Giygas.

    Snaily Joe
The democratically elected leader of the nation of Virtuoso. Like S O U L, it is a being from another realm. It seeks to conquer the game world.
  • Above Good and Evil: It claims to be this when Morshu accuses it of being evil.
I am not evil. I am beyond your human concepts of morals.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: In Era Ovation Acceptance, it competes with S O U L and Shachihata, two rival Eldritch Abominations, for control of the world.
  • Eldritch Abomination: It is a giant blue snail with tentacles and two gaping mouths with rainbow-colored insides.
  • Evil Versus Evil: It wants to rule the world, and competes with S O U L, who wants to corrupt it, and Shachihata, who wants to devour it.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: Almost literal example, as it is a giant snail from another dimension. The true nature of the President of Virtuoso is not made clear until Morshu encounters it, and it is only around for a short while. It is mentioned in the ending, however.
  • Karma Houdini: Due to the series having No Ending, it is unknown if it is ever punished or defeated.
  • President Evil: Snaily Joe is the President of Victorioso and a literal Eldritch Abomination who intends to Take Over the World.
  • Take Over the World: Its goal is to become the “democratically elected” president of the world.

    Shachihata
A parasite who poses as Arale, the creator, and seeks to devour the game world.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: In Era Ovation Acceptance, it competes with S O U L and Snaily Joe, two rival Eldritch Abominations, for control of the world.
  • Eldritch Abomination: It is a dimension-eating parasite that is powerful enough to give Morshu self-awareness and teleport him.
  • Eviler than Thou: According to the Dimensional Stability Officer, Shachihata is so much of a threat that S O U L is preferable.
  • Evil Versus Evil: It wants to devour the world, and competes with S O U L, who wants to corrupt it, and Snaily Joe, who wants to rule it.
  • Karma Houdini: Due to the series having No Ending, it is unknown if it is ever punished or defeated.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: It wants to eat the game world.
  • Treacherous Advisor: It pretends to be the friendly creator, Arale, and gives Morshu self-awareness, leading him on his quest to save his family. This is just a ruse so Morshu can take out its competition, S O U L and Snaily Joe.
  • The Unfought: Just before anything can be done to it, the credits roll.
