Main Characters

    The Player Character
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2022_08_09_at_95748_am.png
The main character, who awakens in the Cult of Darkrai base without their memories. From there, they journey across the region, seeking to take down the cults and figure out who they were. They were chosen by Mew.
  • The Ace: Over the course of the story, they singlehandedly beat every cult, defeat the strongest trainers in the region, and ultimately save the entire universe.
  • Affirmative-Action Legacy: If the female player character is chosen, then she becomes the first female Augur after Adam and Jaern.
  • All Your Powers Combined: Mew can use the special abilities of the other Mythical Pokémon after obtaining their DNA.
  • All There in the Manual: Their official name is Wyatt/Nicole according to Word of God.
  • Amnesiac Hero: They start as this, due to having their memories drained by Gengar's Dream Eater by the Cult of Darkrai for the last year.
  • Character Customization: The player can pick from one of three appearances for them at the beginning, and further modify it with hair dye and new clothes later on.
  • The Chosen One: Is ultimately chosen to become the Third Augur by the Timeless.
  • Have We Met?: Several times, random NPCs will comment that the player character looks familiar. It's because they're the child of the First Augur.
  • Heroic Lineage: The child of the First Augur who ultimately becomes the Third Augur.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: They know nothing about their past, but are still adept at Pokémon battles.
  • Missing Mom: While we meet their dad eventually, we never see the player character's mom.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: The power that Mew grants them, allowing them to transform into anyone with the right DNA. Mew can also transform into other Mythical Pokémon and use their abilities.

    Damian
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/screen_shot_2022_08_09_at_100302_am.png
One of the player's rivals, and the first person they meet after escaping the Cult of Darkrai. He's eager to prove himself, but fairly reckless, which gets him into trouble. He was chosen by Shaymin.
  • Abusive Parents: His stepmother is verbally abusive of him, putting him down every chance she gets. His father isn't much better, threatening to punish Damian when he reveals that Jaern is a target of the Abyssal Cult. And of course there's the matter of his mother being the leader of the Abyssal Cult who abandoned him when he was a small child. No wonder he ends up preferring to stay in the Dream Realm.
  • Afraid of Needles: He admits to being afraid of needles, which is treated as a ridiculous fear compared to the cults he faces daily.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Is the Deoxys in his party a separate Pokémon, or him as influenced by the Deoxys virus?
  • Body Horror: Gets the dubious honor of being the first person infected with the Deoxys virus after Malde, with gruesome results.
  • Broken Pedestal: He's a huge fan of Jaern, and is devastated to learn that he was a cult leader the whole time.
  • Butt-Monkey: He gets no respect from anyone even after Shaymin chooses him, he's verbally abused by his stepmother, ignored and dismissed by the Trainer School teacher, kidnapped by cultists, belittled by Nora, and he ultimately gets turned into a Deoxys hybrid and becomes largely irrelevant to the plot until the postgame.
  • Foreshadowing: One of the Pokémon he uses is a Crawdaunt. Just like his mom.
  • I Choose to Stay: He chooses to stay in the Dream Realm and help Adam make it a better place.
  • Idiot Ball: Damian's purpose seems to be to take firm hold of this ball to move the plot forward. He loudly talks about the fact Mew is following the protagonist, which gets him kidnapped by the Abyssal Cult, and later he bursts into a hospital room shouting, spooking the half-Deoxys Malde into rushing him and infecting him with the Deoxys virus.
  • Missing Mom: His biological mom has been absent from his life. It turns out she's Audrey, the leader of the Abyssal Cult.
  • Nature Spirit: Shaymin can purify polluted places with Seed Flare. When used by Mew, it can instantly turn any toxic cesspool in the area into a small lake that the player can safely cross.
  • The Rival: He's the "friendly rival" archetype.
  • Signature Mon: His Starter Mon; he always has it in his party, and it's the one he equips with a Mega Stone.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: He changes his outfit to better match Shaymin after befriending it.

    Nora
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nora_28.png
The player's other rival, a prodigy trainer who knows about the prophecy surrounding those chosen by the pixie Pokémon. She was chosen by Celebi.
  • The Ace: She's treated as this early on, being introduced as a prodigy of the Trainer School who's never lost a match before.
  • Always Someone Better: While she's a prodigy, the player ultimately becomes this to her.
  • But Now I Must Go: She ultimately leaves Torren to challenge other leagues, gifting the player her Celebi before she goes.
  • Damsel in Distress: Nyx kidnaps her to lure the player to the Distortion World.
  • Green Thumb: Most of the Pokémon she wields early on are at least part Grass-type (especially if the player chooses Delta Bulbasaur), and she also wields the flower-themed but otherwise Fairy-type Floette/Florges.
  • Mr. Exposition: She's the one who info-dumps the player on the prophecy.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She has this reaction after driving Damian away.

  • Properly Paranoid: She's paranoid about anyone discovering her connection with Celebi, but it's justified considering how dangerous Torren is.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: She delivers a scathing one to Damian out of stress after learning about the prophecy, and regrets it immediately afterwards.
  • The Rival: She's the "serious rival" archetype.
  • Signature Mon: Her Flygon, which she can Mega Evolve.
  • Time Master: Celebi's main power is Tesseract, which can be used to send the player to other points in time or pull things from the past.
  • Underground Monkey: Wields a Delta Girafarig and a Delta Maractus in the postgame.

Gym Leaders

    Orion
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/orion_48.png
The Gym Leader of Suntouched City. He uses a Sunny Day team.
  • Companion Cube: He spends a lot of time talking to his best friend, a white rock. It ultimately turns out to be a case of Pals with Jesus.

  • The Cuckoo Lander Was Right: Turns out his best friend is a lot more sentient than everyone thinks — it's Reshiram in stone form.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Everyone thinks this has happened to him, since he spends all his time talking to a rock.
  • Green Thumb: His Deerling and Ivysaur are both part Grass-type, and able to take advantage of Sunny Day to power up their Solar Beam attacks.
  • Pals with Jesus: His "rock" is Reshiram, the Dragon of Truth.
  • Playing with Fire: Most of his Pokémon are at least part Fire-type, fitting his Sunny Day theme.
  • Power of the Sun: He uses a Sunny Day-based team, and several of his Pokémon have the move.
  • Signature Mon: Averted; he’s the only Gym Leader who never Mega Evolves his Pokémon. He does get heavily associated with Reshiram, though.
  • Underground Monkey: Wields a Delta Aron in Hard Mode.

    Xavier
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xavier_0.png
The Gym Leader of Vipik City. He uses a forest-themed team.
  • Ambiguously Brown: His skin is darker than the player's but lighter than Anastasia's.
  • Anime Hair: It's easy to mistake for a green hood at first glance.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Half of his team is part Bug-type.
  • The Lost Woods: His entire gym is themed around this trope, and even has a forest inside of it.
  • Poisonous Person: Most of his team is at least part Poison-type.
  • Signature Mon: His Beedrill, which he Mega Evolves in Hard Mode.
  • The Stoner: It's not explicitly stated, but there's a weird mist wherever he goes, and he uses a Mega Bong to Mega Evolve his Beedrill.
  • Underground Monkey: Wields a Delta Metang (Spider) in place of his Shuckle in Hard Mode.

    East — SPOILERS UNMARKED
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/east.png
The Gym Leader of Helios City, and Jaern's right hand in the Sky Cult. Fittingly, he uses a sky-based team.

    Harmony
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/harmony_48.png
The Gym Leader of Sonata City. She uses Normal and Fairy-type Pokémon.
  • Big Sister Instinct: They're not siblings, but she's very protective of the younger Orion.

  • The Fair Folk: Partly specializes in Fairy-types.
  • Girly Girl: She’s a sweetheart who largely uses adorable and pink-colored Normal and Fairy-type Pokémon.
  • Nice Girl: She watches over the younger Orion and spends her time volunteering at Sonata City’s hospital, among other things.
  • Non-Elemental: Partly specializes in Normal-types.
  • Signature Mon: Much like Whitney before her, it’s her Miltank, which also Mega Evolves.
  • Underground Monkey: Wields a Delta Crustle (Cake) in place of her Cinccino on Hard Mode.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: She disappears from the plot after the player dismantles the Abyssal Cult, even though her father is still mutated.

    Anastasia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/anastasia1.png
The Gym Leader of Kepler City. She uses a machine-based team.
  • Black and Nerdy: Black and a mechanical genius.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Think you can sweep her with a Ground-type? Think again; not only do several of her Pokémon come equipped with Air Balloons, she also has a Wash Rotom with Hydro Pump and (depending on the difficulty) several Pokémon with Ice-type coverage moves.
  • Extra-ore-dinary: Partly specializes in Steel-types.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: She specializes in building armors, items that boost a Pokémon’s defensive stats.
  • Only in It for the Money: The only reason she builds the Zekrom armor for Taen is because he’s paying her, though she insists she didn’t know he was a cultist.
  • Shock and Awe: Partly specializes in Electric-types.
  • Signature Mon: Her Metagross, which she Mega Evolves.

    Diana
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/diana_6.png
The Gym Leader of Selene City. She uses a dream-themed team.
  • Cain and Abel: The Abel to Persephone’s Cain.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: She primarily uses Psychic and Ghost-types and dresses in black, but is a good guy.
  • Dream Walker: The theme of her team. She also owns a Cresselia, which can actually do this.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: She still loves her sister after all this time.
  • Heroic BSoD: Enters one after Calreath’s death and Persephone’s betrayal, culminating in her quitting her job as a Gym Leader, releasing her Pokémon, and becoming a researcher.
  • Official Couple: With Calreath.
  • Olympus Mons: She wields a Cresselia in battle.
  • Signature Mon: Either her Gothitelle (the one she Mega Evolves) or Cresselia (who’s more relevant to the plot).
  • Underground Monkey: Wields a Delta Milotic in place of her Sableye on Hard Mode.

    Calreath
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/calreath.png
The Gym Leader of Amphitrite City. He uses a Rain Dance team, and he was chosen by Manaphy.
  • Anime Hair: It's blue and styled to look like a raindrop.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: He's unexpectedly dropped into lava via trap door while in the Infernal Base, and disappears from the story afterwards, with Diana giving you his Manaphy.
  • Making a Splash: Unsurprisingly, most of his Pokémon are part-Water type.
  • Official Couple: With Diana.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: He has two Dragon-types on his team.
  • Shock and Awe: Has an Electric-type on his team (two in Hard Mode), and a few of his Pokémon know Thunder, which has 100% accuracy in the rain.
  • Signature Mon: Either his Politoed (the one he Mega Evolves) or his Manaphy (the pixie Pokémon that chose him).
  • Underground Monkey: Wields a Delta Dragonite in place of his Kabutops in Hard Mode.

    Adam — SPOILERS UNMARKED
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/adam_28.png
The former Gym Leader of Gaea Town, the First Augur, and the player character's father. He specializes in Dark-types, and he was chosen by Hoopa.
  • Big Good: As the First Augur, he was this to the region.
  • Character Customization: He shares his hair and skin color with whatever avatar the player picked at the beginning; fitting, given that he’s your father.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Specializes in Dark-types, and he's the former hero of the region.
  • Disappeared Dad: Not voluntarily — Jaern and Persephone banished him to the Dream Realm.
  • I Choose to Stay: Chooses to stay in the Dream Realm to deal with Malde and the remaining Darkrai Cultists.
  • I Have Your Wife: This is how Persephone and Jaern beat him the first time. Arceus's Crystal made him immortal and unkillable, but they eventually beat him by holding his family hostage.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He reveals himself to be the player character’s father.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: He ran into the Timeless via Cynthia and convinced them to use the power of Arceus's Crystal they'd been guarding to expel all the cults from the Torren Region. While he did and became a hero, the cults reconsolidated and eventually Jaern and Persephone defeated him, putting the crystal into Jaern's hands.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: He was sealed in the Dream Realm because he couldn't be killed.
  • Signature Mon: His Hydreigon, which he Mega Evolves.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Hyperspace Hole, the power that Hoopa grants to Mew. It allows the player to create portals to access previously-unreachable places.
  • The Unchosen One: While he was chosen by Hoopa and tried his best to abolish the cults of Torren, he ultimately failed.
  • Underground Monkey: Wields a Delta Roserade in place of his Drapion in Hard Mode.

Elite Four

    Kayla
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kayla_1.png
A member of the Elite Four and a Baton Pass expert.
  • Phoneaholic Teenager: Her age is ambiguous, but her sprite shows her looking at her phone screen.
  • Pom-Pom Girl: She dresses like a cheerleader, and her entire strategy revolves around having her team support and boost each other via Baton Pass.
  • Signature Mon: Her Slowbro, which can Mega Evolve.

    Eduard
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eduard.png
A member of the Elite Four and a Sandstorm expert.
  • Cool Shades: Wears a pair of black sunglasses.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Naturally, most of his Pokémon are at least part Ground-type.
  • Sand Blaster: He specializes in setting up Sandstorm.
  • Shout-Out: Everything about him, from his preferred strategy to his name to the fact he uses a Mega Mixtape, is a reference to Darude's "Sandstorm".
  • Signature Mon: His Cacturne, which can Mega Evolve.
  • Underground Monkey: Wields a Delta Hydreigon in place of his Rotom in Hard Mode.

    Yuki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuki_03.png
A member of the Elite Four and a Hail expert.

    London
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/london.png
A member of the Elite Four and a Trick Room expert.
  • Confusion Fu: He specializes in Trick Room, which makes it so that slower Pokémon get to move first for five turns.
  • Failed Attempt at Drama: Both times you face him, he delivers a dramatic statement in preparation for battle...and then comments that he needs to rewrite his lines.
  • Signature Mon: His Reuniclus, which can Mega Evolve.
  • Underground Monkey: Wields a Delta Golurk and Delta Aggron in Hard Mode, replacing his Conkeldurr and Scizor.

    The Champion — SPOILERS UNMARKED
See Reukra's folder.

Major Antagonists

    Persephone
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/persephone_0.png
The leader of the Cult of Darkrai. She seeks to use Darkrai's power to subjugate the region.
  • Bad Boss: She sacrifices a loyal member of her cult to summon Darkrai, and incinerates two more when they annoy her.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Diana's Abel.
  • Dark Is Evil: She uses primarily Dark and Ghost-types, worships a Dark-type Pokémon known for bringing nightmares, and is a nasty piece of work.
  • Freudian Excuse: In the past, she and Diana were captured by the Infernal Cult, and Diana apparently abandoned her during her escape, fueling her present-day resentment for her sister.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She's jealous of her sister for seemingly gaining Darkrai's favor.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: She orders Darkrai to trap you, Malde, and Damian in the Dream Realm. Darkrai traps her and her cultists as well, and while you escape in relatively short order, Persephone herself is still there by the end of the game.
  • Human Sacrifice: While it’s implied with all the other cults, we actively see her participate in this.
  • I Have Your Wife: She tries to get Darkrai to trap you in the Dream Realm by holding the Pokéball containing its partner Cresselia hostage, and threatening to break the capture mechanism to seal Cresselia away forever. Darkrai responds, but it gets the last laugh on Persephone by trapping her and her cultists in the Dream Realm too.
  • Signature Mon: While she never Mega Evolves it, her Gengar is unquestionably her main Pokémon. It also has the honor of being the one to kick off the plot by draining the player character's memories.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: With Jaern; she'll work with him, but hates his guts.
  • Villainous Breakdown: She gets progressively less stoic and more fed-up as the game progresses, which reaches a peak when she's trapped in the Dream Realm. By the time you catch Darkrai, she's reduced to spitting threats she's powerless to act on.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: A murderous cult leader with white hair.

    Jaern — SPOILERS UNMARKED
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jaern.png
The Second Augur and current protector of the Torren region. In reality, he’s the leader of the Sky Cult, he deposed the previous Augur, and he seeks Rayquaza’s power to remake the region in his image.
  • Achilles' Heel: During your first battle with him, he only uses Rayquaza; as a Dragon/Flying-type, it's easy to take out with an Ice-type (though it does get a Fire-type move on Hard Mode to cover that weakness).
  • Anti-Villain: He's a cult leader, but he honestly wants to use the power of Rayquaza to make the region a better place — even if it involves killing anyone who breaks the law. He thinks of himself as an Anti-Hero though.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: For all his big talk and control over the region, Jaern ultimately boils down to this; once people see Nyx defeat him and reveal that he's a cult leader, his popularity implodes upon itself and he is presumably lynched. In fact, he's so unimportant that Nyx didn't even consider him in her plans.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He’s manipulated the region of Torren to believe he's a beloved savior, when he's actually the leader of the Sky Cult planning to use the power of Rayquaza to take over the world.
  • Broken Pedestal: Happens to him on a region-wide scale after Nyx defeats him and reveals he led the Sky Cult; he’s immediately driven into hiding while his statues are torn down and the region hunts for him.
  • Dark Messiah: While he's the leader of the Sky Cult, he also acts like the savior of Torren, and forces the citizens (even children) to pay him tributes in the form of gifts and build statues in their towns in his honor. That, and he truly believes he's saving the world despite planning on using Rayquaza to kill anyone who breaks the law (at his discretion).
  • Evil All Along: Initially presented as the savior of the region, he’s later revealed to be the leader of the Sky Cult.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Averted — he has blonde hair, and while he initially seems like a hero, it's a front for his plans.
  • Human Sacrifice: He sacrifices East to summon Rayquaza.
  • I Gave My Word: While he does apologize to East beforehand, he ultimately keeps his word and sacrifices him when the player defeats him.
  • Olympus Mons: He manages to capture Rayquaza and use it against the player.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Three of the Pokémon he wields are Dragon-types.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: A murderous cult leader, but his propaganda train ensures that he’s beloved by the Torren region as their new savior.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Jaern completely disappears after your second battle with him, with no word on what happens to him.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: He gets his top subordinate East to battle you to see who will be sacrificed to Rayquaza, fully confident in his subordinate's skills. When you win, Jaern keeps his word and sacrifices East.

    Audrey
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/audrey_15.png
The leader of the Abyssal Cult, which seeks to take control of Kyogre.
  • Batman Gambit: She donated the fake Blue Orb to the Miara Town museum, not only expecting people to underestimate the Abyssal Cult since everyone would assume they knew where the Blue Orb was, but also correctly assuming it would be the perfect place for the museum curators to hide the Tidal Bell, which was what she was really after.
  • Disney Death: She appears to die after Kyogre attacks her, but the postgame reveals that she's alive and lets you rescue her.
  • The Great Flood: She plans on flooding the world with Kyogre's powers.
  • Heads I Win, Tails You Lose: Pulls this on the protagonist after she captures Lugia; if the player beats her, she won't release Lugia and she'll still continue with her plans, but if the player loses, then they lose everything.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: She suffers a Disney Death at the hands of the very Kyogre she tried to control.
  • Lord of the Ocean: Both Kyogre and Lugia have this reputation, and she wants control of both.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: It turns out she's Damian’s mother.
  • Making a Splash: She uses Water-types.
  • Older Than They Look: She looks like a young woman, but is the mother of at least one child.
  • Signature Mon: Besides her Legendaries, she has a Mega Evolution-capable Crawdaunt.
  • Underground Monkey: Wields a Delta Serperior in place of her Kingdra on Hard Mode.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: She has white hair and is a cult leader.

    Zenith — SPOILERS UNMARKED
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zenith_3.png
The leader of the Infernal Cult, the region's oldest cult.
  • Anime Hair: It's red and purple, slightly spiky, and might be a comb-over given his age.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He masquerades as the respected librarian Zachary in order to get the region to trust him enough to fall for his phony vaccine scheme.
  • "Blackmail" Is Such an Ugly Word: Prefers the term "mind optimization" to mind control.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: He mind controls most of the region to hunt for the player, Diana, and Calreath.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Partly specializes in Ground-types.
  • The Dog Was the Mastermind: The friendly librarian was really a cult leader this whole time!
  • Exact Words: Plans to exploit this. According to the prophecy, The Chosen One will dismantle every other cult, then join his — but there's nothing about whether or not they join willingly...
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: His "Zachary" disguise is nothing more than him dyeing the red parts of his hair purple and putting on a different outfit. Subverted though, as since his true appearance is only seen after his disguise, it justifiably works on first time players who haven't been spoiled.
  • Playing with Fire: Partly specializes in Fire-types.
  • Signature Mon: The two Pokémon he Mega Evolves are Magcargo and Blaziken.
  • Uncertain Doom: Either he died when Groudon attacked him, or when his base was flooded in magma — neither is a pretty fate.
  • Villainous Breakdown: He breaks down after you defeat him for the second time at the Infernal Base.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: As Zachary, he's a respected librarian and public figure.

    Reukra
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reukra.png
The leader of "Perfection", a group that seeks to create the perfect Pokémon.
  • Affably Evil: He's fairly amiable with the player character, even actively assisting them at some points. However, he's still a ruthless villain, and his help tends to fall under the Pragmatic Villainy umbrella.
  • Artificial Human: He genetically engineered the Delta Starters, Delta Larvesta and Volcanion, and Shadow Mewtwo.
  • Badass Longcoat: He wears a trench coat as part of his outfit.
  • Final Boss: As the Champion of the Elite Four, he's this for the main story.
  • In Name Only: His "cult" isn't really a cult, and he confirms that it isn't one. It only seems to be called a cult because it's a villainous team in Torren.
  • Mad Scientist: He has a tendency to experiment on Pokémon in his pursuit of the "perfect" one.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He deliberately gave Sylvan the Delta Starters under the guise of them being failed experiments in the hopes that a trainer would pick them and befriend them enough to be able to Mega Evolve them. Then he supplied those trainers (you and Damian) with Mega Rings and lets you grab the Mega Stone for your starter from his lab, but he bugs the rings so he can track the data from them each time you use them.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: Leaves Torren in the end, in search of a region where he won't be stopped by children.
  • Social Darwinist: His sole goal is finding or creating the perfect Pokémon. Near the end, he switches to creating the perfect team of Pokémon instead. When that still fails, he becomes desperate enough to try and capture Arceus.
  • Underground Monkey: Notably created several Deltas seen throughout the game; additionally, he wields a Delta Haxorus, Delta Volcarona, Delta Goodra, and Delta Yanmega.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After several setbacks, he grows frustrated enough that he just charges into the realm of the Timeless to capture Arceus itself.

The True Villain — SPOILERS UNMARKED
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nyx_1.png
Nyx, the true antagonist of Insurgence. She leads a team from the Distortion World, and orchestrated the events of the game as part of her plan to save her people.
  • Anti-Villain: At the end of the day, she’s just someone who wants to save her people, though she commits countless atrocities both directly and indirectly to do so.
  • Confusion Fu: Your battle with her is an Inverse Battle, which means all type matchups are reversed.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: Every bad thing in the game can be traced back to her interference.
  • Humanoid Abomination: She appears to be made of light, a side-effect of living in the Distortion World.
  • Manipulative Bastard: She was able to manipulate the entire region with her prophecy.
  • Signature Mon: Kangaskhan, which can Mega Evolve.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Everything she does is motivated by a desire to save her people, no matter how many people she hurts.
  • Written by the Winners: She quotes this trope by name and claims that this is the case between the original battle between Arceus and Giratina, about which one revolted against who. Arceus and Giratina were both equals, and the legend that Arceus created the Creation Trio and that Giratina revolted and had to be banished to the Distortion World is all due to the fact that Arceus won; the legend would be told differently if it was Giratina that won. It's unknown if she was telling the truth.

Other Antagonists

    Taen
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/taen.png
Reukra's right-hand man in Perfection.
  • Boring, but Practical: "Lots and lots of Master Balls" may be a less exciting method of obtaining Legendary Pokémon than what some of the other cults do, but as he points out, it's a lot more efficient.
  • Dragon-in-Chief: He's the member of Perfection that actively antagonizes the player the most, even compared to his boss.
  • Idiot Ball: Grabs it by assuming that "Namehere" is the actual name of the Original Dragon rather than a placeholder.
  • Sequel Hook: Takes up an offer from a man named Almand to travel to the Kuria region after his last defeat, setting up the plot of the still-in-development fan game Pokémon Azurite.
  • Signature Mon: Kyurem and Zekrom.
  • Super Mode: Every time you fight him, he uses a different Mega Evolution-capable Pokémon. The only exception is the final battle, and that's only because he uses a different super mode instead, having his Delta Metagross (Ruin) Crystallize.
  • Underground Monkey: He uses a Delta Darmanitan, Delta Arcanine, and Delta Metagross (Ruin).
  • Would Hurt a Child: Violently shoves Orion out of the way so he can get to the kid's rock.

    Malde
Harmony's father, who undergoes a horrifying transformation thanks to Perfection's schemes.
  • A God Am I: Proclaims himself a god with his newfound power and immortality.
  • Body Horror: When he’s injected with Pokérus, the faint Deoxys DNA in his body reacts by turning him into a grotesque Deoxys hybrid.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Half-human, half-Deoxys.
  • Psychic Powers: He’s gained various powers as a result of his mutation, like flight and limited mind control.
  • The Unfought: You never fight him, unlike the other antagonists.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: His existence and infection of Damian are used by Zenith to send the region into a panic.
  • The Virus: He can transfer his condition via touch and enslave those who fall victim to it.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He disappears when the player defeats him in the Dream Realm, though not before returning Damian and the infected cultists back to normal.

    The Oracle — SPOILERS UNMARKED
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ancient_oracle.png
An ancient oracle who resides in the Utira Library. Actually an agent of Nyx.
  • Mr. Exposition: He's the one that tells the player about the prophecy involving them.
  • Only in It for the Money: The main reason he helps Nyx is because she's paying him, and he has no real interest in her goals otherwise.
  • Seers: Actually subverted. While he does have one major prophecy under his belt, it's later revealed that the prophecy in question was a lie meant to manipulate Zenith.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: He only appears twice, but both his appearances herald major plot points — first the reveal of the full prophecy, and second the reveal that his group has been manipulating Torren from the start.
  • Soul Power: Three of his Pokémon (four in Hard Mode) are Ghost-types.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's impossible to discuss him without bringing up a major plot point.

    Professor Maple
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/professor_maple.png
A professor doing research in the Holon Region. He's also a bit insane.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Compared to most of the other villains in Insurgence, his villainy feels far more cartoonish and blatant, and he revels in it.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: What's his grand motive for trying to capture the Delta Regis and conquer the world with them? He's at risk of losing tenure.
  • Mad Scientist: The game outright calls him "Mad Professor".
  • Obviously Evil: He mutters about using the Delta Regi Trio for his own ends pretty much every time you talk to him. Unsurprisingly, he's the villain of the Holon subplot.
  • Social Darwinist: Believes Delta Pokémon are inherently stronger than their regular counterparts, and thus deserve to inherit the Earth (under his command, of course).
  • Take Over the World: His ultimate goal.
  • Theme Naming: Like every other professor, he’s named after a tree.
  • Underground Monkey: He wields the Delta Starters and the Delta Regi Trio in battle.

Other Characters

    Professor Sylvan
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sylvan.png
The Torren region's professor. She gives you and Damian your Starters.
  • Non-Elemental: Typically she hands out Eevees to aspiring trainers.
  • Optional Boss: You can battle her during the postgame; she wields the unselected Delta Starter(s) and various Eeveelutions, and at the end will reward you with the Delta Starter (or all three) that you didn't pick.

    The Timeless — SPOILERS UNMARKED
An order of powerful trainers gathered by Arceus to protect the Crystal.
  • The Ageless: None of them age anymore.
  • Ancient Order of Protectors: They're trainers taken from across time and space by Arceus and granted immortality to protect the Crystal from Giratina’s followers.
  • Creator Cameo: One of the Timeless is the game's head developer Suzerain.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: All of them except Suzerain (a Creator Cameo) and Alain (who originates from the anime) originate from past games both official and fan-made.
  • Faking the Dead: They all had to fake their deaths in order to join the group. Only Steven's "death" is mentioned, though.
  • Olympus Mons: Many of them use Legendary Pokémon, and Vesryn and Suzerain were chosen by Victini and Jirachi, respectively.
  • The Worf Effect: Reukra tears through them like wet paper on his quest to capture Arceus.

    Gail
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gail_1.png
A Pokémon Ranger who recruits you to help stop the remnants of Perfection in the postgame. They were chosen by Zygarde.
  • Big, Stupid Doodoo-Head: Their preferred insult for Taen and other antagonists is "turdstain", among other juvenile insults. Given that they hastily censor themselves at one point when they're about to call Perfection "dicks", it might be because they're deliberately trying not to swear.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: They summon Zygarde to help stop Taen summon the Original Dragon (Kyurem), but it transforms into its Perfect form and Gail loses control of it, forcing you to step in and stop Zygarde (defeat or capture) before it hurts Orion's Reshiram friend.
  • Signature Mon: Zygarde. They also have a Mega Evolution-capable Sunflora.
  • Soapbox Sadie: They work with various pro-environmentalist groups to shut down the Perfection lab, and actively work with a Pokémon that protects the land itself.

    Professor Pine
A professor working in the Holon Region who researches Delta Pokémon.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Implied; she developed the special Poké Balls you can buy in Holon.
  • Good Counterpart: To Maple; she's more interested in studying Deltas than using them for her own ends.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Her only known Pokémon is the part Dragon-type Noivern.
  • Palette Swap: She has purple hair rather than green to distinguish her from the generic female Scientist sprites.
  • Theme Naming: Like every other professor, she’s named after a tree.
