    Alis Landale
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alis_3_psg.jpg
The main character of Phantasy Star I and a recurring character in the tetralogy. When her brother is slain by government forces led by the corrupt King Lassic, Alis takes up arms and sets out on a solar system-spanning quest to avenge him and get to the root of the evil influencing their home.

Her personality was lightly expanded in the remake in Sega's Ages 2500 series, where she's much more no-nonsense but still friendly and optimistic. She also mourns her brother's passing more frequently in this version.Alis additionally appears in Segagaga in a (surprise) supporting role, and was playable in SEGA's Massive Multiplayer Crossover mobile puzzle game Sega Heroes. An Alternate Universe counterpart of her appears in Phantasy Star Online 2.

  • Action Girl: The original JRPG heroine and willing to take on a corrupt government that influences an entire star system to avenge her brother.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The remake implies Alis may have been a nurse before setting off on her quest, seeing as how she and the Camineet Hospital lady know each other and how she knows healing magic at the start of the game.
  • Angst: Alis angsts over her brother's death more frequently in the remake, particularly when she steps into her now-empty house. It also offers an in-game justification as to why she just doesn't acquire some of her brother's equipment or tools to help her on her quest; she can't bring herself to take anything.
  • Disapproving Look: Prone to these in the remakes when an NPC says something particularly silly.
  • Heal Thyself: Learns some healing magic early on. In the remake, she knows it from the start.
  • The Hero: She's the driving force behind the quest to dethrone Lassic, and thus the de facto leader of the group. She travels the solar system, gathering allies and equipment, all in her quest to avenge her brother and free the system from Lassic's tyrannical rule.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Very early on in the remake, when someone congratulates Alis on standing up to Lassic, she brushes them off and says that her quest for vengeance isn't worth such praise.
  • Kill It with Fire: The "Fire" spell.
  • Magic Knight: She focuses more on the knight than the magic, though.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Alis is revealed to be descended from the last Algol king. Whether she accepts her royal position or not is up to the player.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Fans are torn whether her Japanese name is Alisa, Arisa, or Alyssa.
  • Unbuilt Trope: Alis existed well before the video game conventions for Action Girls solidified. Accordingly, she fights like a knight, using armor and a heavy sword rather than a lighter weapon or a ranged one.
  • Unrelated in the Adaptation: For some reason, she and Nero are adoptive siblings in the remake.
  • Warp Whistle: The "Fly" spell, which transports the party to the last church visited. This works across planets.
  • You Killed My Brother

    Myau
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/myau_3_psg_9.jpg
One of many in a race known as "musk cats", highly intelligent and sapient feline-like quadrupeds who boast a stellar affinity for magic. He is friends with Odin, and unlike others of his kind, he wears a mysterious bottle around his neck.
  • Combat Medic: Myau's magic focuses on healing and status buffs, but he's no slouch in physical combat, either.
  • Magic Knight: Not as traditional as Alis, but Myau hits hard up until the end game, and even then he's not too bad.
  • Non-Human Sidekick: The only non-human companion of Alis' crew, being a Palman musk cat.
  • Punny Name: Yep, that's a cat's meow he's named for.
  • Series Mascot: In later years since the tetralogy, Myau's image has become associated with the franchise as a whole, with the Phantasy Star 25th anniversary logo featuring him.
  • Talking Animal: Palman musk cats look like large felines, but are fully capable of speech and even spellcasting. (Though not, as Odin learned, capable of opening small bottles.)
  • Team Pet: Being a sapient feline with spellcasting abilities, Myau certainly stands out from the other three. He also requires special equipment, not being able to wear or use human gear.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: When fed a certain type of nut.
  • White Mage: All of Myau's magic is healing, stat buffing, or affects the area (disarm traps, escape dungeons, etc.).

    Odin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/odin_3_psg.jpg
A powerful warrior and hunter, Alis was told by her brother to find him for help in fighting against Lassic. Though lacking in spellcasting, he makes up for it with his physical strength and skill to use the best weapons and armour available.
  • The Big Guy: The muscle of the party, which is good because it's literally all he has going for him.
  • Gentle Giant: He's this according to Word of God. This is briefly seen in the Japanese version, where he acts chivalrous toward Alisa in his introductory cutscene.
  • Magically Inept Fighter: He's just a very sturdy soldier with no magic at his disposal.
  • Only One Name: Only ever identified as Odin.
  • Remembered Too Late: When preparing to fight Medusa, he had the foresight to give Myau a vial of salve that could reverse petrification. Unfortunately, he forgot that Myau lacks opposable thumbs, and thus couldn't remove the vial from his collar or open it.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Like Alis, fans can't decide if his Japanese name is Tylon or Tyrone.
  • Superhero Packing Heat: Odin is the only character who can use guns, which compensates for the fact he can't use magic.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Despite being the main character in this game, he's never mentioned again after this game, only seen in flashbacks in PSIV. By comparison, Alis is constantly referred to throughout Algo's history and Myau and Lutz show up in future games.

    Noah/Lutz
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lutz_3_psg.jpg
An esper and aspiring wizard, Noah is found training in solitude in a cave on Motavia. While initially aloof and unwilling to help, a letter of reference by the Governor convinces him to join your quest. Though physically weak, Lutz uses powerful magic to greatly aid in battle.
  • Blow You Away: The "Wind" spell.
  • Dub Name Change: Different from Alis and Odin in that Lutz would have fit the four-character name limit. Unlike the other three, this change did not stick.
  • Kill It with Fire: He also has the "Fire" spell.
  • Red Mage: He has the "Cure" spell, though he can't use it in battle. He's also the only character who learns "Rise".
  • She's a Man in Japan: The sufferer of a famous inconsistency in pronouns in the translation, but he's supposed to be a man everywhere.
  • Shock and Awe: The "Thunder" spell.
  • Squishy Wizard: Lutz has low Hit Points and very few armour options, but makes up for it with powerful offensive magic.

    Nero
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/img_7.png
Alis' brother, who was killed by Lassic's soldiers for treason. His death motivates Alis to strike out on a quest to defeat Lassic and free the Algol system.
  • I'm Dying, Please Take My MacGuffin: A bit indirect, but Nero gave his friend Nekise a Laconic pot right before Lassic's men caught up to him. Nekise will give it to Alis when she starts her quest.
  • Take Up My Sword: His final words to his sister Alis are that Lassic's tyranny will threaten all life in the system, and asking her to continue his work in overthrowing Lassic.

    Suelo

    Governor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/download_265.jpg
The Governor of Motavia, who will assist Alis, if she's able to gain an audience with him.

    Reipard La Shiec/Lassic
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lassic.jpg
  • Crown of Horns: His headgear has two long horns that jut out from the side, to further emphasize the evil wizard look.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: He's made out to be Big Bad. Then Dark Force shows up.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: In PSIV, He may not have been responsible for the Black Energy Wave occurring on Dezolis, but he at least likely was aware of it when he ordered three of his cronies to steal the one thing that can help stop it, just to get revenge for his defeat in the first game.
  • Orcus on His Throne: Does very little to stop Alis's party from reaching his castle and killing him.
  • Revenge Before Reason: In PSIV for the third time.
  • Shadow Dictator: Once he was corrupted by Dark Force.
  • Spell My Name With An S: "Lassic" in his first appearance. "Lashiec" in PSIV.

    Dark Force
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/darkfalz.jpg
Effectively the Big Bad of the entire tetralogy. His actual background is more fully realized in Phantasy Star IV.

  • As Long as There Is Evil: He will always come back.
  • Big Bad: Of the original game and its three sequels.
  • "Blind Idiot" Translation: His name is transliterated incorrectly in Japanese. It should be ダーく・フォース (dāku fōsu) or ダーく・フォルス (dāku forusu).
  • The Corrupter: To Lashiec, the humans in PSII, and Rulakir in III.
  • Dark Is Evil: Dark Force. It's right there in the name.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Comes with being a physical manifestation of pure hatred.
  • Generic Doomsday Villain: He shows up to fight the player and has no dialogue. Even when he does talk in the third game he is still this, his only dialogue only tells the player he's an Omnicidal Maniac. Eventually, we get a reason for this in the fourth game.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: In the original game. Lashiec is made out to be the main villain for most of the game. Then out of nowhere, he shows up. Happens again in the second game, managing to be even more ridiculous as the players open up a chest and fight him. Then he's never brought up again. It's not until the fourth game we learn anything about what he is.
  • Nightmare Face: His appearance changes every game, the only consistent physical trait is his monstrous face with long fangs, though even that trait is gone in his appearance in the third game.
  • One-Winged Angel: If you don't count his cameo when Zio channels him, he pulls this twice in PSIV.
  • Regularly Scheduled Evil: His return happens every one thousand years.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Has been romanized as Dark Falz in the first game and through the Online series, and even "Dark Phallus" has been suggested as a correct spelling.
  • Suddenly Voiced: After just appearing to act like a boss in the first two games, he starts talking when he appears in the third game.
