Opponents

    Yukari Yakumo

Yukari Yakumo

The Youkai of boundaries. She initially summons BF and GF to Gensokyo to engage in a singing competition, with the conditions of becoming her servants- er, shikigami if they lose. From Stage 3 onward, she takes the couple around Gensokyo to engage in a series of activities. As per usual, her actual motives are beyond the understanding of the couple.

  • Cartwright Curse: Her love life between generations is a little rough, putting it lightly. She already lost Renko back when she was Maribel, but when she decides to move on with her life in Gensokyo, her next lover, Chouka (AKA Yuyuko), would later be Driven to Suicide — and that was after being told by them that she would undergo Ghost Amnesia upon inevitably dying, while being asked to let go and regard her ghost self as a different person.
  • Humanoid Abomination: Yukari leans a little more heavily on this than in canon. She holds her mic with a tentacle coming out of a gap in her default pose, and when she pretends to go One-Winged Angel in between "Night Falls" and "Necrofantasia", she sprouts Extra Eyes on her face and a tentacle from her chest.
  • Parental Substitute: Takes on the role as Reimu's mother since her early age ceremony, with her proud of calling Reimu her surrogate daughter.
  • Reality Warper: By proxy of being the manipulator of boundaries, she's able to mess with various aspects of reality if there is a boundary to it. In Stage 1, her use of boundary manipulation is relatively tame — at most warping BF and GF into Gensokyo then later her home dimension, and warping express trains to attack BF. By Stage 3, she rids BF and GF of their hangover episode with a snap of her fingers, just to get them ready for a busy day.
  • Shipper on Deck: Thinks of BF and GF as a cute couple, and would rather they'd be free to live out the rest of their lives rather than strictly become her shikigami. Though, her support of their relationship can be seen in another light considering her concerns regarding Girlfriend being a powerful and long-lived demon that could be a problem for Boyfriend, especially considering Kiki Setsuko...
  • Tragic Keepsake: An engagement ring in a small black box, likely intended for Maribel proposing to Renko. Despite being resigned to Renko's death, she stills keeps it preserved long after becoming the Gap Youkai.

    Secret Sealing Club

Renko Usami

Click to see her early cameo appearance (SPOILERS)

The leader of the two-person group, the Secret Sealing Club.

  • All Myths Are True: Firmly subscribes to this belief, discussing aspects of Buddhism despite not being a Buddhist, and comparing her philosophy of this trope with Ancient Greece.
Renko: As far as they were concerned, they had no idea about other cultures existing besides what was around them. It’s like what if a tree fell in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it truly make a sound? Well if the people of Ancient Greece didn’t know about other cultures like Japan or Africa, then do those places truly exist?
  • The Cameo: By the latter half of "Necrofantasia", her ghost makes an appearance to sing alongside Yukari, with the latter seemingly unaware of her presence.
  • Posthumous Character: At least in the context of modern Gensokyo and Yukari's POV, Renko is long dead in the Yukari's personal timeline — her death resulting in Maribel becoming Yukari.

Maribel Hearn

The other half of the Secret Sealing Club.

    Reimu Hakurei

Reimu Hakurei

The shrine maiden of the Hakurei name. Fought at the start of Stage 3, with her sole song "Funky Capriccio".
  • Adaptation Name Change: Downplayed. Hakurei is not her surname originally, but was something that was adopted upon being designated the Hakurei Shrine Maiden. Reimu's original family name is yet to be directly revealed; Ran did call her "Reimu Sa-" before being cut off by Yukari.
  • Being Watched: Shortly after her Hakurei ceremony, Reimu was able to sense Yukari spying on her through a gap, despite not being able to see the rift that lets the latter see her. Because of this display, Yukari had reconsidered her prior stance of Reimu being sworn in as the Hakurei shrine maiden.
  • Demoted to Extra: Downplayed. She's the protagonist of the main series, and while she has a does have a relatively major role as an opponent in the main story, along with getting central focus or story development in a few of the song file omakes, she's relegated as a one song opponent with less ties to the main plot amongst the cast.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Because Reimu's an overworked shrine maiden who works a thankless job with not enough pay, she's distinctly designed with some sleepless induced eye-shadow for her appearance in Stage 3.
  • Kid Hero: Was put in charge of the Hakurei Shrine, with duties including slaying youkai that threaten the populace, at an age so young that Yukari initially thought the villagers got the first human girl they found and forced them into a life-threatening role.

    Mamizou Futatsuiwa

Mamizou Futatsuiwa

The Tanuki from the Outside World, who's also the aunt figure for Girlfriend. Not only does she know of the Dearest family, as they are oni who originated from Former Hell, she's also the one responsible for escorting them out of Gensokyo. Her sole song is "From Sado".
  • Only Sane Man: Has shades of this — she's one of the only people to call out how weird Boyfriend and Girlfriend's names are, and in her omake she discusses how the Dearests' hometown is seemingly a hotbed for the supernatural.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Downplayed, but Girlfriend sees her as a surrogate aunt.
  • The Transmogrifier: Courtesy of her "Futatsuiwa Family's Curse" in canon, she can transform other people into animals. Just before their rap battle proper, Mamizou transforms BF into a parrot, GF into a goat, and Yukari into a axolotl (again). If Girlfriend's screams of "NOT THIS AGAIN!" is any indication, this isn't the first time she's been transformed into an animal by Mamizou.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: Being a Tanuki girl, she demonstrates her ability to transform by taking on the forms of Pico, Tankman, and Mommy Mearest, complete with vocal change, throughout her song "From Sado" — even doing so in rapid succession further into the song.

    Yuyuko Saigyouji

Yuyuko Saigyouji/Chouka

  • Big Eater: Yuyuko, like in both Canon and Fanon, loves to eat. The scenario in Stage 4 is of her inviting Yukari to a picnic, one of which where the latter any more late, the former would've taken all the food for herself. The cutscene between "Sakura" and "Border of Life" even has her take a break to gouge on the food at the picnic, with her portrait upon returning showing her still snacking on a drumstick.
  • Butterfly of Death and Rebirth: Being the Ghost Princess who has powers over the dead, she's naturally represents this with her butterfly motif. In the mod proper, it's represented as her two gimmick notes, both Color-Coded for Your Convenience: blackish purple butterflies must be avoided, while white butterflies must be hit; failure to do so resulting in BF taking severe damage.
  • Ghost Amnesia: As her original self Chouka, who like in canon is soon to commit suicide, she's already aware that this trope would happen, as her memories will be lost to the Collective Unconscious, separate from her spirit. She also enforces this by explicitly requested her then lover Yukari to not address her ghost self as who she is, wanting her spirit to live on as their own person.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: In the "Border Of Life" Omake, she gives this comment towards Yukari, who just had a Flashback to her original lively self telling Yukari to let go and not remind her ghost self about who she once was due to Ghost Amnesia.
Yukuko: But I’m your friend Yukarin. You should be able to tell me everything that bothers you, alright?

Spoiler Characters

    Kiki Setsuko

Kiki Setsuko

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kiki_4.png
Her appearance at the end of Stage 1 and 2

The long-lived Oni with power over the very concept of sounds. Strongly implied in their first introduction, and ultimately confirmed with their encounter, to actually be the future version of Girlfriend, after becoming accustomed to the world of Gensokyo since the death of Boyfriend.

  • Canon Character All Along: While she's already introduced with the strong implication of who she is from the hat alone, it takes until Stage 5 for her to spell it out to GF that she's her.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Like with Yukari, she found herself displaced in an unspecified point in Gensokyo's past to eventually grow far older than her present self.
  • Heart Is an Awesome Power: Her power over the very concept of sound can allow her to manipulate it in various ways, whether through pitch, length, volume, or negating it altogether. This allows Kiki to generate sound-wave danmaku bullets from her punches, clap her hands to generate thunder that's followed by lightning, and forcibly stopping the hearts of other by negating the pulse.
  • I Hate Past Me: She's gets particularly fed up with her past self in the encounter proper, questioning if she really was that much of an idiot long ago.
  • Same Character, But Different: She's who Girlfriend would end up becoming after spending the rest of her long life in Gensokyo after the death of Boyfriend.
  • Sinister Silhouettes: Her portrait in the mod itself is presented in this fashion, with the only other blatant feature being her demonic red eyes. Subverted, as while she appears intimidating, she's not exactly presented as an immediate threat at that point, but an old associate with Yukari. Played Straight once she finally becomes an opponent to GF.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Owns a tattered red cap that she usually wears at all times. With the hat being very familiar, and her identity being known because of it, it's no surprise why she keeps it.
  • Walking Spoiler: Talking about her at length reveals that she's GF at a later point in time, after losing BF long ago. The end of Yukari's week alone implies that much with the image of her holding a tattered red cap that looks like BF's, along with the final Stage setting Girlfriend's fate in stone.

    The Forgotten

Rin Satsuki

Where... am I? Why can't I remember anything? This... song... memories are coming back... Reimu... Marisa... Yukari... can you hear me? It's me!

Ȓ̵͛ḯ̵͂n̸͐̂ ̵͐̀S̷̈́́a̴͊̇t̴̼́ŝ̷̌û̷͋ḱ̸̊ḯ̴̢
— The description of the unlisted video of her song.

The character that had been subject to the cutting room floor in canonnote , with her being forgotten by the world In-Universe. She isn't present in the mod by normal means, with her song file — "52 61 73 70 62 65 72 72 79"note  — found within the mod proof of her existence.

  • From Beyond the Fourth Wall: Though she's not necessarily aware of the fourth wall, in the secret omake found with her song upload on Youtube, she sends a message to anyone who will listen, pleading with them to finish her story so that she can exist again... and providing various audio assets used in her song.
  • Glitch Entity: Going by the unlisted video linked by Yukari, which depicts the mod's cover art as jagged and glitchy, Rin Satsuki has become this as a result of the Ret-Gone. The ending of her song even has her 'voice' glitch out.
  • Identity Amnesia: Going by the video description, she initially doesn't remember anything at all; only through the song does she recover portions of her memories, including the names of Reimu, Marisa, Yukari, and herself.
  • The Nothing After Death: The nothingness after being forgotten, at least, but it's where she currently resides.
  • Ret-Gone:invoked She was originally a character that has since been Dummied Out in canon, with this mod's portrayal taking it a step further by making her removed from existence; her identity and place in the world vanishing as a result. The only one that remembers her in any capacity is Marisa (albeit indirectly, due to recalling a shop called "Little Shop of Raspberry") and Yukari.
  • Signature Instrument: Erhu. While she's not properly seen with the instrument, her pastebin message mentions having it on hand, and her 'vocals' for "52 61 73 70 62 65 72 72 79" are sampled from an Erhu.
