The hero of the story, Ori is a guardian spirit and child of the Spirit Tree of the forest of Nibel who was taken out of their home by the wind one day and adopted by Naru. But a cataclysm one day causes the forest to wither and Naru dies of starvation, leaving Ori alone to wander the forest, until they find back the Spirit Tree, who revives them and send their child on a quest to save the forest.
  • Cartoon Creature: They are said to be a guardian spirit, and look like an odd blend of a cat, a rabbit and a lemur.
  • Critical Existence Failure: Ori won't be too affected by getting hurt, until it reaches their last health point, causing them to burst into sparks of lights.
  • Death Is Cheap: Putting aside the gameplay mechanics, Ori is revived twice in the story by the Spirit Tree, first when they collapses nearby at the beginning, and second after being killed by Kuro near the end.
  • Disney Death: Their defeat against Kuro at the end is painted as a death, wiht Naru even mourning Ori. It doesn't last long as Kuro has a change of heart and restore the Spirit Tree's power, allowing Ori to be healed.
  • Heartwarming Orphan: Naru adopted Ori after finding them lost in the woods, and has since been very protective of them.
  • Heroic Mime: The hero and they don't talk.
  • Heroic Neutral: Ori isn't motivated by desires beyond finding a family, still this is what lead them on a heroic journey to save the forest.
  • Light Is Good: Even if Dark Is Not Evil in this world, this doesn't stop the light from being good as well, with Ori being a guardian spirit of light, even having white glowing fur to showcase it.
  • Meaningful Name: "Ori" means "my light" in Hebrew.
  • Nature Hero: They are on a journey to restore the elements of the forest.
  • Nature Spirit: Ori is a guardian spirit, born of the Spirit Tree in the forest of Nibel.
  • Non-Action Protagonist: It's easy to forget but Ori doesn't fight anyone by themself, since Sein is the one attacking the enemies for them. In fact, against Kuro, Ori is completely defenseless.
  • Otherworldly and Sexually Ambiguous: Ori is never referred to as male or female in-game, the narration going on its way to avoid using pronouns for them. Word of God confirms they are neither and both.
  • Protagonist Title: The titular hero of both games.
  • Vague Age: Ori appears to be very young, and treated as a child. But their actual age is unknown.
    • It should be noted that the game's description refers to Ori as young. And Ori makes childish drawings in the prologue and the ending.

    Naru

A female being without light. She adopted Ori after they landed near her burrow when the wind carried them away from the Spirit Tree. She acted as a loving mother to the young guardian spirit until the forest withered and she died of starvation.
  • All-Loving Hero: Naru never let her aversion to light stops her from befriending the guardian spirits. This becomes important in the end when her loves for Ori makes Kuro reconsider her believes.
  • Backstory: In the Definitive Edition, exploring the Lost Grove gives details about how Naru, when younger was friends with two guardian spirits called Eki and Sol but her father forbade her because he feared their light to be a danger. After her father death, orphaned Naru left the grove and never came back.
  • Big Fun: She's a pudgy fluffy monster and a very nice one as well, Ori is often seen sleeping on her belly.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Like Kuro, She's a being without light, as shown by her dark Color Motif, meaning the light of the Spirit Tree is deadly to her. Unlike Kuro however, she's actually very friendly to the guardian spirits (such as Ori) and doesn't resent them. This is in part, what lead to Kuro's change of heart.
  • Disney Death: Dies at the beginning, only to be brought back by Gumo midway through the story.
  • Foil: To Kuro. Both are vulnerable to light and both are mothers. However whereas Kuro hates the light for causing the death of her children, Naru's adoptive son is a being of light. The final confrontation of the game is between the two of them and Naru shielding Ori from Kuro makes the latter realize how much more in common they have than she thought and lead to her change of heart.
  • Good Parents: She's a very good and loving mother figure to Ori.

The last survivor of the Gumon clan, who fleed from the cataclysm into a new hideout near the Thornfelt Swamp. He guards the key to the Water element.
  • Androcles' Lion: Gumo is initally hostile towards Ori, until they save him from a rockslide.
  • Last of His Kind: He's the sole survivor of the Gumon tribe after they all froze to death during the cataclysm.
