    The Goats

Mei/May

Voiced By Rie Kugimiya (Japanese), Terry Osada (English)

A lively female goat from the Sawasawa Mountains. She is mostly nice with her friends, but isn't afraid to show her emotions, be it joy or anger. She grew up with her grand-mother and her friends on Sawasawa Mountains. In the first episode, she quickly became friends with Gabu.
  • Age Lift; While she's not a kid anymore, she seems younger than her movie counterpart.
  • Angst? What Angst??: She's not seem affected by the fact that she might never see her herd again. Instead, she's excited to know that she will always be with Gabu.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Didn't take very well that Gabu tried to end their relationship in episode 7.
  • Berserk Button: Call her species fat and slow in front of her, and she will be determined to prove you the contrary, as she took the pleasure to show it to four wolf pups.
  • Cry Laughing / I'm Crying, but I Don't Know Why: In episode 22. She doesn't know why she is crying while she is laughing.
  • Disappeared Dad: Not even once her father is mentioned.
  • Dub Name Change: The English dub calls her "May".
  • Gender Flip: While Mei's gender is unmentioned in the original books and Mei was a male in the film; here, Mei is depicted as a female.
  • Genki Girl: She can be really enthusiastic when she's happy.
  • The Idealist: Believes that wolves and goats can be friends in episode 22 and episode 26.
  • Interspecies Friendship / Forbidden Friendship: With Gabu, but more...
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Despite being a prey animal, she can often come off as bold and brash compared to the timid and gentle Gabu.
  • Missing Mom: We only see her mom in flash-back, in episode 24.
  • Pink Means Feminine: Not just her fur, but her eyes too.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Since her mother's death, she's in the care of her grandmother.
  • Star Crossed Lover / Interspecies Romance: With Gabu, again.
  • You Can't Go Home Again: The elder of her clan explicitly said that she has to gather wolves' secrets by tricking Gabu if she wants to stay with her herd and family. Considering that she rather run away with her friend, she is most likely banned. It's even worse in this version, as her herd decided to leave Sawa Sawa Mountain right after this event, meaning that even if she returns there, she will only finds an empty place. The arrow's direction that Mii left won't help too much, as the herd will surely deviate at one point.

Tapp

A blue goat who lives in Sawasawa Mountains. He's a good friend of May who is a little strict with his friends, considering that he seems to follow the rules of his elders rather seriously.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: He certainly feels that May betrayed him and the rest of the herd, and his last word he says in the final episode implies strongly that he may even despises her now.
Tapp: There's no way she will come back !
Mii: She will come back ! I know she will !
Tapp: That girl betrayed us ! She threw away her herd !
  • Manly Tears: The only time he's crying is when he learned May's secret friendship with Gabu, hardly accepting this.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Constantly brags about beating wolves and knowing all things about them, even if he always flee at their sight. Of course, he has all reasons to run away, since his life is in danger.

Mii

A young goat who's full of energy. She's friend with Tapp, May and Moro, which doesn't prevent them from being annoyed of her mischievous and active behaviour.
  • Age Lift: She's a child in this version, when she's the same age as an adult Mei in the movie.
  • Cheerful Child: She's younger than her friends, and she's full of joy.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes
  • Undying Loyalty: She's so close to May that she refused to believe that she might be friends with a wolf. When the secret was finally revealed in la late episodes, she wasn't disappointed in her, not even a little, and wanted to play with her after that. In the final episode, she's convinced that May will come back, despite the fact that she betrayed her herd, and left a hint to let her know where the herd moved.

Moro

A grey and chubby goat who doesn't appear in the movie. In the series, he's usually seen with Tapp, Mii and May, when she is around. He enjoys eating a lot, and is likely the most quiet among his three other friends.
  • Big Eater: In almost all scenes he appears, he's eating. He even has his own secret place to eat leaves from bushes.
  • Vocal Evolution: After the first time he makes his appearance, his voice has gone considerably deeper.
  • Those Two Guys: He's often seen with Tapp, when the latter forces him to come with him.

May's Grandma

An old and blue goat. She is the sweet and kind grandmother of May, whom she loves very much. She also cares and gets along pretty well with her grand-daughter's friends.
  • Prayer Is a Last Resort: Only in the japanese dub. When May decides to run away with Gabu by jumping into the agitated waters of the river, her grandmother can only pray for her safety, as she will never see her grandchild again.

    The Wolves

Gabu

Voiced by Hiroyuki Yoshino (Japanese), Jack Merluzzi (English)

A wolf from the Bakubaku Valley.
  • Age Lift: Like May, he seems younger compared to his movie's counterpart.
  • Butt-Monkey: The majority of the series, he's seen get injured or sometimes humiliated by his pack.
  • Disappeared Dad: However, he appears in Giro flash-backs, in episode 24.
  • Growling Gut: Happens in almost every episode. Gabu struggles to suppress his hunger to avoid eating May or her goat friends, the latter in which to avoid hurting her feelings.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Has these in his character design as opposed to the movie's version.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: No matter how many times it falls, or even the height of the falls, none of them will hurt it seriously. Not that he won’t feel pain in a few cases either.
  • Just Friends: With Lala, a female wolf of his pack.
  • The Klutz: While not his defining trait, he tends to trip and fall several times in the series. Yet, he can always get up without an injury.
  • Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: Despite being a predator, he's generally more gentle and shy compared to May.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: If we consider that May and Gabu are in a relationship, in episode 7, Gabu saw May with a black goat, and thought that there was something between the two goats. The wolf wasn't really happy.
  • Missing Mom: Only seen in the first episode, in a flashback.
  • Nervous Wreck: He's very jittery and shy for a wolf.
  • Nice Guy: He stills nice with the others wolves, even if they make fun of him. He promised to never eat goats anymore after became friend with May, and even help some others goats at his own risks. And always help May, even if it can be dangerous. He is not the "very special friend" of May for nothing.
  • Predator Turned Protector: Even if he's a wolf, he will always help and protect his best friend who is a goat.
  • Redheads Are Uncool: He has a red fur, and he's the unpopular one in is pack.

Giro

The leader of the wolf pack.

Barry

A blue wolf who seems to be the sub-chief.
  • Canon Foreigner: Like Giro, he has a sister named Lala.
  • Growling Gut: Happened in episode 15 when the wolves are unable to hunt anything since it hasn't rain for the past 10 days.
  • The Dragon: To Giro. In episode 26, he has to stay in Baku Baku Valley for replacing Giro, while the leader goes after Gabu.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He only has red eyes.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Compared to the movie, he seems a little nicer to Gabu. But he stills rude in the majority of the time.

Zak and Butch

Two twins wolves.
  • Fat and Skinny: Zak is the skinny one, and Butch the big one.
  • Fat Idiot: Butch isn't very bright, which explains why Zak is surprised when he's the one who suggest that Gabu was manipulated by a goat.
