The Third Mates

    Henry Hogfish

Henry "Hank" Hogfish

Played by: Jake Hurwitz

Race: Humanoid (uses Human stats)
Class: Fighter (Echo Knight)

A watchman for the Thornkirk village docks who is down on his luck at the start of the story, and whose shadow is a lot more active than it should be.

  • Boxing Battler: While Henry is armed with a halberd, over the course of the first few episodes he shows a talent for pugilism, preferring to fight with his fists in subsequent encounters.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Has been known on ships as "Ill-Luck Henry."
  • The Eeyore: A rather downbeat and pessimistic guy, albeit with good reason as he has recently been through a separation with his ex-wife, a son who hates him for leaving and he has a living shadow that is a manifestation of his reincarnation curse.
  • Living Shadow: Henry is an Echo Knight, a Fighter with the ability to summon a spectral duplicate to aid them in combat. This duplicate manifests as Henry's shadow behaving erratically and moving when it's not supposed to. It eventually forms into a sentient being dubbed Shank ("Shadow Hank").
  • Open-Fly Gag: A notable running gag has Hank wearing very short shorts, which inevitably lead to one of his nuts slipping out for all to see.
  • Papa Wolf: Generally pretty morose and passive, Henry becomes much more badass when his estranged son, Henry Jr, is in danger.
  • Reincarnation-Identifying Trait: In all of his past lives, he is always a sailor and is either named at birth as or circumstances have him change his name to Henry.
  • Ridiculously Average Guy: Henry is described as painfully average in height, size and facial appearance.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: A variation of this trope. The first time he died he drowned after failing to save his friend, a witch named Olette, who was also a past life of Fia's friend Irina (a.k.a. the Trickster's daughter Cerynesus). He made a pact with the spring fairy Leonora to keep reincarnating and repeating the same life until he is able to rectify his mistake and save Olette/Irina/Cerenysus from dying tragically.
  • Silver Fox: Despite Jake's initial assertion as average in looks, his later additions to Henry's image has him accidentally coming off as more unkempt yet attractive which Emily makes fun of Jake for.
  • Straight Man: Henry reacts to most situations with a reserved, deadpan bewilderment in contrast to Fia and Zirk's more outlandish behavior.
  • Younger Than They Look: Despite only being forty, he's described as having prematurely greying hair.

     Fia Boginya

Fia Boginya

Played by: Emily Axford

Race: Humanoid (uses Vedalken stats)
Class: Cleric (War Domain) / Wizard (School of Chronurgy)

A lone hedge witch who lives on the outskirts of Thornkirk in an abandoned train yard, teaching herself magic after her mentor disappeared a number of years ago.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Always addresses Hank and Zirk as "Mr Henry" and "Mr Zirk," respectively.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: Fia's familiar is an animated spellbook named Bukvar, who flies around, talks and makes the cheese he uses to bake pizza.
  • Badass Bookworm: A powerful spellcaster who passed most of her days before the beginning of the story collecting and reading spellbooks.
  • Creepy Child: Seems to have been one in her youth. Especially evident in her enjoyment of digging 'sleeping trenches' that resemble graves, and occasionally humming or singing creepy songs
  • Cute Little Fangs: Emily describes Fia (whose race is still undetermined) as having small tusks that protrude over her upper lip.
  • Magic Knight: Her levels in War Priest allow her to use martial weapons and equip medium and heavy armour, making her far more physically adept than your average wizard.
  • No Social Skills: Prior to the campaign's beginning, Fia experiences interacting with other people was very limited. Her skill in talking with others is so rusty she gets a knife put to her throat just by introducing herself. In another instance, she gets so excited at jumping in a pool for the first time she sprints toward it, unconcerned said pool belonged to someone and almost got shot by crossbows.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Fia often smokes cigars.
  • Super Drowning Skills: The concept of bodies of water and swimming in general is foreign to Fia, having never even encountered a pool until early into the campaign. The first time she tries swimming she almost immediately drowns. Fia ends up having Henry become her swimming instructor, with mixed results.

     Zirk Vervain

Zirk Vervain

Played by: Caldwell Tanner

Race: Humanoid (uses Aereni High Elf stats)
Class: Artificer (Alchemist)

A coroner's apprentice with a talent for brewing powerful concoctions with a variety of uses, who gets caught up in the mystery of a monster who has been killing people by slicing them clean in half.

  • Alchemy Is Magic: Zirk's spells manifest through him throwing out a poultice or quick-brewing a potion in the heat of battle. In the first episode he casts Faerie Fire by tamping his stirring rod with crushed magical herbs and blowing them out to form a cloud of sparkling smoke.
    • In episode 4 he casts Alter Self by crafting a concoction from leftover shrimp scampi to give Henry gills.
  • Atrocious Alias: Despite Zirk's conman past, when forced to lie about his identity, his go-to alias is the highly unconvincing "Dr Zonk."
  • Broken Pedestal: Looked up to his mother during his childhood, but upon being reunited with her, he comes to quickly realise how amoral she is.
  • Comic-Book Fantasy Casting: Is described as Geralt of Rivia "but without the muscles."
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Was carted from town to town by his mother, helping her con gullible villagers with fake potions.
  • Disney Death: After a number of unsuccessful attempts to remove the crown from Irina/Cerenysus's head, Zirk makes an all-or-nothing deal with an unknown winter fairy: he will be given one final chance to detach the crown, but if he fails he dies. When Caldwell rolls a 2, Zirk immediately drops dead. Fortunately Fia is able to resurrect Zirk with the Revivify spell he had a hand in crafting.
  • Mage Marksman: Caldwell sets his gun as his magic catalyst and so performs all of his spells by effectively shooting them from his pistol.
  • Snake Oil Salesman: The specific flavour of con he would perform with his mother.
  • Sniff Sniff Nom: Zirk's first instinct whenever he encounters a strange new substance is to immediately lick it, to both Hank and Fia's constant disgust.

The Hexblood Centurions

    Jabari Hightower

Jabari Hightower

Played by: Lou Wilson

Race: Humanoid (uses Human stats)
Class: Monk (Way of the Kensei) / Fighter (Battle Master)

The former head of the King's Guard and the only remaining member of the Hexblood Centurions who still lives in the castle barracks. Longing for the glory days of fighting side-by-side with his companions Tarragon and Corbeau, Jabari continues to train in preparation for when he is once more called to action.

  • Blood Knight: Relishes the thrill of combat and is often too quick to solve his problems with wanton violence and murder.
  • Cool Old Guy: Is over a century-and-a-half old thanks to the Hexblood experimental program, which has increased his longevity beyond the average humanoid lifespan. It's also what has allowed him to keep his body in prime shape, and also the fact he has been exercising daily since the Hexbloods disbanded.
  • Glory Days: At the beginning of the Hexbloods' arc, Jabari is the only one of the still-living Hexbloods who remains in the castle barracks, living close to the king. His political influence and position in court has waned considerably and longs to be given purpose and get the band back together.
  • The Good Chancellor: Is unanimously elected the Chancellor of Outerborough at the end of the campaign. Amusingly he was neither aware of the fact that he had been nominated or that he had won, and as a result is five days late to his own inauguration ceremony.
  • I Call It "Vera": Has a longbow and axe named Fang and Claw, respectively.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Being a Longbow-based Kensei Monk with 5e's Sharpshooter feat gives Jabari spectacular aim and his most badass feats in the campaign are thanks to his marksmanship.
  • Large and in Charge: Is 6'7'' and is the de facto leader of the Hexbloods.
  • Old Soldier: Is respected in his position as the former head of the King's Guard and has had over a century to build a venerable reputation amongst the Petty King's military forces. His popularity as an old war hero and renowned member of the former Petty King's court is what gives him the landslide vote in the election that promotes him to Chancellor of Outerborough.
  • Parental Favoritism: Is on the receiving end of this with his surrogate mother figure Moxora, who openly admits Jabari is his favorite in their climactic showdown and even attempts to use this fact to sway him to her side.
  • Red Baron: His nickname back in the day was "Jabari the Safari," which as of the current day people still refer to him with hushed tones of awe.
Jabari: "HE WILL TAKE YOU ON A RIDE!"
  • Tattoo as Character Type: Jabari has an elaborate chest piece tattoo depicting the tortures of hell, which both establishes his status as a badass warrior and his Blood Knight tendencies.
  • Third-Person Person: Always refers to himself in the third person.

     Tarragon Snakeroot

Tarragon Snakeroot

Played by: Emily Axford

Race: Humanoid (uses Halfling stats)
Class: Monk (Way of the Ascendant Dragon) / Cleric (Peace Domain)

A former Hexblood Centurion who has renounced her formerly militaristic ways for a life of pacifism, tending and owning a plant shop in Outerborough.

  • The Atoner: Has taken up a life of gardening in part to atone for the atrocities she committed as a Hexblood centurion. This is also her reason for taking care of the Dragon Rose, which came from a village she helped to burn down and is now helping it grow as a way to make up for the destruction she caused.
  • Breath Weapon: As part of her Way of the Ascendant Dragon path as a monk, Tarragon is able to breathe flames.
  • Caring Gardener: Gardens and works with plants in her spare time, tending especially to her Dragon Rose. Her hobby of gardening highlights her compassionate nature and desire to preserve life above all else.
  • Cool Old Lady: Is over a century and a half old but is no less badass for it, able to keep up in combat despite being a self-proclaimed pacifist.
  • Dragon Knight: Is a former soldier and Hexblood centurion, and the sorceress Marowen (and Tarragon's surrogate mother) experimented on her by injecting her with dragon's blood. This gave her dragon-like eyes and granted her draconic motifs and abilities, not limited to but including the ability to breathe fire and summon a pair of spectral dragon wings.
  • Martial Pacifist: Since leaving the Hexbloods, Tarragon has opted for a life of promoting peace and wellness. Once Jabari convinces her to rejoin, she always attempts to find the path of least resistance and the option that results in the least amount of bloodshed. However this doesn't mean she isn't still combat capable and readily proves that despite her pacifistic oath is willing to fight if given no other choice.
  • Meaningful Name: Her first name, Tarragon (a perennial herb) and the suffix of "root" in her surname are indicative of her horticultural expertise, while "Snake" reflects the draconic source of her powers as a monk.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Is a tiny halfling woman and is well under 4 feet tall, but can dish out a lot of damage with the rest of the Hexbloods.
  • Something about a Rose: The plant Tarragon most cares for is an enormous rose that is only born from the ashes of dragon fire and is currently the last of its species. It blooms at the end of the Hexbloods's first arc, in the ashes of Outerborough Castle after the Cindersworn initiate a controlled burn on the building after an outbreak of horrors.

     Corbeau Babineaux

Corbeau Babineaux

Played by: Jake Hurwitz

Race: Humanoid (uses Kenku stats)
Class: Monk (Way of Mercy)

The last of the former Hexblood centurions, who like Tarragon, has also left the castle and traded it for a life of panhandling and giving speeches at the local market.

  • A Boy and His X: Corbeau goes nowhere without his Irish wolfhound Lake. Unusually, Lake is almost as old as Corbeau and is also over a century old.
  • Cool Mask: Wears a black plague doctor mask.
  • Cool Old Guy: Like the rest of the Hexblood centurions Corbeau is over a century and a half old, and is very much combat capable.
  • Clever Crows: Corbeau is outwardly a human, but uses Kenku racial features. His entire aesthetic, from his wartime nickname, his actual name and his plague doctor mask bring to mind images of a crow.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: The most cynical of the Hexblood trio, and has a more pragmatic perspective in any given situation. When Moxora urges the Hexbloods to give some of their blood to aid in the ritual to resurrect King Thurston Brightleap, Corbeau is the only holdout as he believes the dead should be allowed to rest and that the old king had already lived a long life. It was only his loyalty to Tarragon and Jabari, and also that the ritual was about to put the other two in danger was he convinced to offer his blood as well.
  • Only Sane Man: Compared to the high energy of Jabari and Tarragon, Corbeau typically stands as the voice of reason within their group and reins in the other two's wilder temperaments.

    Bukvar

Bukvar

Played by: Brian "Murph" Murphy

Race: Book
Class: Familiar

Fia's familiar: a talking, animate book that has been for a good chunk of Fia's life her only companion and best friend.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Usually timid and shies away from combat, Bukvar becomes a lot angrier and violent whenever he gets the ability to breathe fire.
  • Breath Weapon: Occasionally Fia casts the Dragon's Breath spell on Bukvar, which results in his voice deepening and Bukvar becoming way more aggressive. His flame breath shoots from a paper cutout of a dragon's head that sprouts from his pages whenever the spell is cast on him.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: Often described making pizza for the Third Mates, and from what has been narrated he is not very good at it, given that he is a book with no arms to speak of. His pizza often turns out either extremely burnt or grossly under-cooked (and on rare occasions sometimes both).
  • Distressed Dude: Is kidnapped by Moxora about halfway through the campaign, and alongside with finding Irina one of the Third Mates' (and especially Fia's) personal missions are to find and rescue Bukvar from Moxora's clutches.
  • God Job: Ascends to the position of judging and sorting the souls of the afterlife in the finale as he is deemed the only one fit for the job. With his new station he is bequeathed the title of "The Great Librarian".
  • Humanity Ensues: When Moxora and Cain kidnap Bukvar, Moxora draws out his spirit from the book and he incarnates as a small, bespectacled humanoid boy. He is described as looking almost as if he were Fia's younger sibling, with his own set of tusks matching Fia's own.
  • Lovable Coward: Being an animate book it doesn't leave Bukvar much room to participate in combat and rightfully tends to hide and cower as a first instinct.
