Maxwell is the "father" of Iris. 40 years prior to the events of Reflection and Detonation he was the head of Eltria's Planet Reclamation Committee.
  • Abusive Parent: He was the one who created Iris and considers both her and Yuri his daughters. He also emotionally manipulated the two into trying to kill each other in the past and in the present directly hijacks their bodies to force them to fight the heroes to the death. In fact, when he applies the word 'daughter' to a person, it generally translates more to 'thing I can exploit or control for my own gain', as shown when he directs it at Nanoha.
  • Adaptation Name Change: The bonus chapter of INNOCENTS featuring Iris implies that his last name is Sevenfield in that continuity.
  • Big Bad: He's the main villain of Detonation, and by extension the Greater-Scope Villain of Reflection.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He's initially presented as a heroic figure in Iris' flashbacks, though once the Planet Reclamation Committee gets shut down he has all of his colleagues slaughtered without a second thought and plans on selling his designs to the military.
  • Brain Uploading: The original Maxwell was killed by Yuri 40 years before the events of Detonation. He put a copy of his memories into Iris, which were transferred to an Iris Unit. In the climax of Detonation he attempts to fire a ship with his memories out of the forcefield containing him so that he can escape. Fortunately Amitie and Nanoha put a stop to that.
  • Decomposite Character: With Granz Florian, as the role as the creator of an army of robots who took the first one as a daughter is instead given to him. Although he displays one particular aspect (being a Jail Expy) much more strongly than game!Granz ever did.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He's mentioned in a bonus chapter of INNOCENTS as Iris' father, though he isn't mentioned by name there due to it having been released before Detonation.
  • Expy: He's basically a more action focused Jail Scaglietti, complete with Mecha-Mooks, robotic Quirky Miniboss Squad, plans to sell his tech to the military, escape plan based on having a copy of himself in his daughter, and holding a city hostage with a Kill Sat.
  • Evil All Along: He's first introduced in the flashback as Iris' loving father figure and a victim of Yuri's supposed rampage. The second he appears in the present he reveals his true colors.
  • Fatherly Scientist: Subverted. He acted like he viewed Iris as a daughter because it helped her develop faster, but he never really cared about her.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: For Reflection, being the one manipulating Iris from behind the scenes. He's also in a roundabout way this for the Book of Darkness incident: he was directly responsible for its Warden Yuri being incapacitated and sealed away, allowing it to cause all the trouble it ultimately did in the first place.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: Nanoha and Fate end up blowing off both of his arms and his entire lower body when they defeat him. His nature as an Iris Unit allows him to survive it, but is left effectively crippled.
  • Hate Sink: Once Maxwell's true nature is revealed, he easily becomes one of the most, if not the most, despicable villain in the Nanoha canon. Hell, unlike the majority of Nanoha villains, he doesn't even have a Freudian Excuse to justify his atrocities. He just caused death and destruction on a massive scale all for the flimsiest of reasons.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: His original human body was killed in this manner by Yuri after his attempts to get her to take part in his evil plan failed. Of course, this was all part of his Thanatos Gambit.
  • It's All About Me: At the end of the day, the only thing Maxwell cares about is himself and his own gain. He's willing to destroy Earth for profit, despite being well aware how many innocent people live there.
  • Manipulative Bastard: During the reveal of his evil nature in the flashback Maxwell admits to Yuri that, while he was never able to truly love Iris, he pretended that he did because it made Iris evolve faster. And he uses Iris' love for him to drive her to battle Yuri, which eventually leads to the events of the movies.
  • The Sociopath: Once the funding for the Eltria Reclamation project was cut he immediately had everyone murdered by Iris Units without even blinking an eye on the grounds that he was doing them a favor so that they wouldn't be assigned to more boring work. When Yuri confronts him he admits that he never loved Iris or anyone else; he just pretended he did because it produced results. And finally he has no problem destroying Earth, all in the name of profit, despite the billions of people living there. Like a real high functioning sociopath, he's quite capable of pretending to be a normal, loving human being, but it's all an act.
  • Thanatos Gambit: He allowed Yuri to kill his human body, tricking Iris into thinking that she was responsible for the slaughter of the entire Planet Reclamation Committee.
  • They Look Just Like Everyone Else!: He's up there with Quattro and canon Precia as one of the most despicable characters in the series despite looking completely unassuming.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: In battle his strategy boils down to spamming Accelerator to overpower his opponents, without any of the finesse other mages have shown. Since it's such a big advantage and his cyborg body seems to be immune to the downsides it isn't such a big problem for him, but Nanoha having the same power and far more training catches him off-guard, with the fact she isn't immune to the downsides being his only clear advantage in their fight.
  • Vehicular Theme Naming: His last name comes from the Maxwell automobile company.
  • Walking Spoiler: To the point that this entire entry would be nothing but white if the spoilers were left on.
  • War for Fun and Profit: His true reason for making Iris in the first place: she's a self-replicating Super-Soldier he intended to use to profit off wars throughout the universe.
  • We Can Rule Together: He tried pulling this on Yuri in the backstory. She said no. Near the end of the movie he attempts to make Nanoha one of his daughters after seeing her use both Midchildan and Formula magic at once. She also says no.

    Iris Units

Iris Units

Androids created from Iris' ability to rearrange inorganic matter. They come in two main varieties, Mass Production Types and Inherent Types.

  • Dragon Their Feet: A unique Satellite Cannon Type remains even after Maxwell is defeated, taking control of a Kill Sat to try and give him time to escape.
  • Expy: Inherent Types fill the same role as the Numbers did in StrikerS, while the Mass Production Types are the Gadget Drones if they were humanoid and were also able to fill non-combat roles.
  • Mecha-Mooks: All of them are completely mechanical. Most of them are destroyed without a second thought despite appearing to be at least partially sentient.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: Inherent Types all have unique appearances and weapons, though they lack any real developed personalities.
  • Significant Double Casting: They all share their voice actress with Iris, due to them all being her creations.
  • Taking You with Me: After being defeated, the Satellite Cannon Type attempts to blow up Nanoha with its self-destruct mechanism. It comes just barely short of killing her, outright destroying her right arm and eye. Fortunately, this doesn't stick — between Yuri's ability and the nanomachine's recovery boosting function, Nanoha's destroyed body parts are fully regenerated.
